Video Power / Nick Arcade review

In Canada we had “Video and Arcade Top Ten” which was also a Wizard-like video game tournament, it was pretty awesome. It lasted a long time too, I think it was on the air for almost fifteen years. YTV rocks!

Also the theme music always reminded me of Crashman’s stage from Mega Man 2.

I thought I was the only one who watched that show! Haha

      • December 8, 2017 at 12:12 pm

        Pure 90s juice.

      • December 8, 2017 at 12:23 pm

I miss YTV, they had incredible movies at night, like Alien or Invasion ot Bodysnatchers. And they did take inspire from Megaman for the theme song, they mention it at some point.

Omg I was just about to type that exact comment about Video and Arcade top 10! With of course host Nicholas Picolaus

      • December 8, 2017 at 12:50 pm

Nicholas Picolaus (Is that his real name?) haha. Yeah, he was great. He had an unofficial catchphrase in the early days which we would always make fun of in the school yard: He used to say SNES as if it was a word instead of pronouncing the initials like you’re supposed to, so every time he talked about a game he’d go “Out now for your Snes.” Aaah, memories.

In the UK we got GamesMaster which was amazing for the time. There was also a show called Knightmare which was almost like a live action videogame.

I’ve watched back a good few episodes of Knightmare on Youtube (before a lot of them were pulled), and I’ve yet to see one where the team actually wins the fucking thing. 😀

The main event of Nick Arcade was incredibly frustrating to watch since it seemed like the kids were so bad at the games. Like the time would be running out and the kid is just standing still like they don’t know what to do next, when on the screen you can clearly see what they need to do. I know it’s not their fault since they can’t see what we see but as a kid I would be yelling at the screen like “just go left idiot!”

good god I used to love Nick Arcade. It was so bad that it was good, and it was pretty much the only place to see video games on TV at that time. moving mikey across the board, the dumbass contestants, and the goofy host who would constantly mispronounce things (i’ll never forget him calling Dr. Robotnik “Dr Robo-Nick”) it was such a classic show. the kids always sucked at the lame green screen physical challenge where they get “warp into the game”.

I actually remember Video Power a lot more, and had forgotten about Nick Arcade until watching this video.

I actually have a DVD of some of the old Nick game shows- Legends of the Hidden temple, double dare, and a single lone episode of Nick Arcade. “Nick Games And Sports” I think it’s called.

So there are DVD quality versions of Nick Arcade out there. I have one.

Thanks for featuring these shows, James. I’ve watched Nick Arcade frequently since childhood, I’ve also remembered you talking about Video Power in the past.

Just for the record, I did a search regarding airdates, and Video Power aired at 6:00am, while Nick Arcade would generally air around 5:30pm

  • December 13, 2017 at 1:33 pm

Man I LOVED Video Power lol! Here’s a clip I took from an old VHS recording – it includes a snippet from the street fighter 2010 episode. The end also has the intro from the Dragon Warrior cartoon which was out around the same time, which was AWESOME!
