Extreme Nerdy Horror Trivia. Who is the lantern man who appears in the beginning of the silent public domain Lon Chaney classic Phantom of the Opera? Also a comparison between the 1925 version, the 1929/30 sound version, and the two reconstructed versions that exist today.

Very interesting video. I’ve seen a few silent films where you see different takes in different versions. I have a VHS and DVD of Dr Mabuse the Gambler; the latter is hours longer but also many of the same shots are clearly sourced from different takes, so great to see the side-by-side comparison here. I’ll have to give Phantom a watch, looks like a great film!

The version I have on DVD seems to be based on the Eastman Version because it has pretty good image quality and includes the color scenes and the opera scene in the beginning.

But it doesn’t have the lantern man and all the black and white scenes are color tinted! Scenes inside the opera house are tinted yellow, and scenes in the cellars are tinted blue or violet.
