The Mummy (2017) Movie review

James / June 9th, 2017

Is it horror? Is it action? Is it a Marvel wannabe? Here’s our initial reaction of this bizarre first chapter of Universal’s monster reboots, from the company that originally invented the “shared universe” back in the 40s with “Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman.”

I rather wait for Blu-Ray. Say what you will about the 2004 Van Helsing, but at least it has a good balance of action and horror.

I like James’s idea of just continuing from the original Universal Monsters films. Make them all-ages CG-animated movies with the likenesses and atmosphere of the originals.

i wouldnt waste my time with this movie either way. the original universal horror films were class. there was a charm to these movies that cant be captured in CG. the pacing, the atmosphere of course, were amazing. this new perspective on film making is a sin. hasta la vista, baby

Oh, you just know the SJW’s are going to come out of the woodwork claiming that the only reason you don’t like it is because the mummy is female.

I really hope you’re wrong but then again… remember when Patton Oswalt flipped out about James’ comments on the new Ghostbusters? People can be so weird.

Oh, you just know what they’re going to do with Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man: they’re going to try to make him the slapstick comic relief in the vein of Jack Sparrow and Tanto.

I really hope they don’t go that route. If they have any sense they’ll mix a toned-down Sweeney Todd with his investigator in From Hell.

As far as i’m aware this is supposed to be more of a summer blockbuster popcorn action flick, much closer to Brendan Fraser than Boris Karloff. Sounds like you were expecting it to be a horror movie?
(I haven’t watched it, so i’m basing my opinion on how I felt after watching the trailer)

I saw it in IMAX 3D last night.

    I didn’t hate it.
    I didn’t love it.
I thought it was decent and entertaining enough.
Though I have little to no desire to see it again.

I really liked the mummy and I actually sided with her in the middle of the film.
    I also sided with Hyde.

    It was good.
I really find nothing wrong with it except that it just wasn’t that great, enthralling, or memorable.

I’m a bit with James when he said that it was entertaining enough.
And, yes, slightly better than a really decent Sci-Fi or Syfy Channel film from the old days.

I have this updated chart for ranking movies I saw for the year along with a star rating.
I’m having a really hard time deciding what to rate it.
It was good, it just didn’t wow me or captivate me enough to call it solid or great.

Watching this i could not stop thinking this is not a movie, this is a TV pilot for the series about the mummy. It would have worked as a TV pilot too, but it just doesnt as a movie.
