Power Rangers – A noob’s review PART 2

James / February 24th, 2017

James reviews Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, broadly covering seasons 1-3, plus the first two movies. (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie 1995 and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie 1997). This is the final part. Next week will be a new topic.

I think some types of old CGI have charm. All the wild morphing effects of the 90s, some of the really early experimental stuff like Last Starfighter and Tron…as for the ones in the MMPR movie, erm, probably depends on my mood. Doesn’t look much better than Beast wars, and that had the excuse of being for TV…

Anyway, good to hear your thoughts, James. Impressed you got through it all like that–for the most part, Power rangers is a bit of a ‘seen one episode, seen them all’ deal, so to get through all that is no mean feat.

I think the new movie looks more like a typical current superhero flick a la Marvel than Transformers, it’ll probably be merely alright.

Hey another amazing video James, amazing work, keep it up. Loved it, really hilarious!

I used to watch this even though I was in high school. I got a kick out of it. It was always on right after school (Fox Kids, I think) so it was almost unavoidable, but Kimberly was the biggest draw for me at the time. 15 year old me was totally crushing on the Pink Ranger. Once she left I don’t think I ever watched another episode. The episodes, for the most part, are ‘seen one seen ’em all’. I love that theme song, though.

Wow, i just watched on youtube, “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 25 Toy Commercials”. Man it was such a nostalgia trip, I actually had the green ranger head flipping action figure when i was little lol. Thank you for the wonderful trip down memory lane. I am actually rewatching the original series on netflix right now with my 3 and seven year old sons. It’s been over 20 years, and we are all loving it! James, I want to thank you for these memories, both new and old, and my boys say thank you too.
P.S. They both loved these videos, truly great work!!

Looking forward to the new movie. You should play some Power Ranger games on James and Mike. Love to see your opinions on the Super Nintendo and Genesis games.

Must have taken a long time to make a room like a video store. Loving the fan reviews though, James.

At 13:08 when you talk about the mmpr movie you have the turbo movie poster instead of the mmpr movie poster

Movie looks ok but I dont think it will top the short with James Van Der Beek. That was dark and awesome. https://youtu.be/vw5vcUPyL90.

Well, this explains why Rita looked like she was constantly dubbed, that her lips didn’t always match what she was saying (though the little I’ve seen it did seem more out of sync than anything).
And I did find it silly that they had to flail their arms whenever they needed to speak.

  • February 26, 2017 at 2:00 pm

Now all you have to do is make some AVGN episodes about the Power Ranger games!

I am sorry but I am glad I skipped this show growing up. Not all shows needed to be watched and this was one that could be avoided and wouldn’t matter. I did try watching an episode 8 years ago and I was like omg this wasn’t even fun to watch. It looked like a school play to me or even worse. But anyway thanks for the review and letting me know some things about it. I feel like it’s a show that is too hard to swallow.

    Go Go power rangers

I hope you continue watching more Power Rangers. When the Rangers start going into space, shit gets really radical, dude.
