Mike Matei / April 6th, 2016

For the 10 Year Anniversary of the Nerd’s YouTube channel, he plays the Mega Man games, good and bad. The horridness will test him to the limit. To make it through, he must turn to the past!

Written, Produced and Starring James Rolfe
Title Card by Mike Matei
Mike Matei as Bugs Bunny
Theme Song, and Special Effects Construction by Kyle Justin
Music by Andreas Hedlund.

This was the most time-consuming AVGN episode to make, at 138+ hours of work. It beat the record, previously held by R.O.B. at 122+ hours.

The Cinemassacre/ AVGN Merch page has been updated. New T-shirts are available, DVD’s have been restocked, and there’s even a new video game AVGN Adventures 2: Assimilation.

Was a latecomer to AVGN and all of the cinemassacre goodness, but have spent the past couple of years catching up on everything and soaking up the good stuff.

Great work, guys! Looking forward to all of the future awesomeness!

Wow great job guys. That episode was amazing. I can’t even fathom how much work must’ve went into editing alone, let alone preparations for the video. I’d say it payed off well. Congrats guys!

Excellent video… loved the green-screen work, and great homage to the old videos!

I had never heard of the Dos games – its strange to think that the PC and consoles were so far apart back then.

  • April 6, 2016 at 7:00 am

Awesome, great as always. It’s too bad you didn’t go even further back (to when you were a little kid screaming at the tv lol) but how would you even manage to edit that in? Anyway, I hope you start making these more often again though I do appreciate the other works you do too…I just favor these ones the most.

  • April 6, 2016 at 7:20 am

One of the best episodes you’ve ever made! 😀

  • April 6, 2016 at 7:38 am

MegaMan Soccer on SNES?! Really? WTF?… But wait.. It’s actually a good game 😀 Make your own opinion: I personally like it.. Thank AVGN for the “hidden gem” 😀

    Great fucking episode.
Keep up the good work. It’s fine if you do an AVGN video only once in a while, the important thing is that it’s entertaining.
I feel nostalgic about your old website. I watch your videos since 2008.
Thanks for all of your work. You’re awesome.

    April 6, 2016 at 10:19 am

Another great job, James! Very nicely orchestrated plot with the time travel idea, and you also did a great job keeping the vocal intonations of the past nerds as well. That fight with Bugs at the end was also amazingly cinematic! Thanks for this little homage to your career so far and keep up the great work!

Awesome episode, you really went all out on this one. Regarding playing video games on a keyboard, it’s actually great when you get used to it. Early in my life my C64 joysticks broke, so I had to play my games on a keyboard and today I play almost all of them that way. Yes, even AVGN 2, which is pretty cool btw.

  • Deathbringer

Here’s to another 10 years. Well done James and the rest of the Cinemassacre crew.

I’m surprised that the battle network games didn’t get mentioned. they were even worse than mega man soccer.

  • chris hall

    April 6, 2016 at 1:38 pm

That was would be even better if we didn’t have to wait another 6 months for the next episode. Keppra up the momentum… pump out the nerd videos this summer. Let’s go back to the past. Ps. I like Mike better with his face covered.its masks his lack of talent, not just his hideously grotesque mug

    • J1a8son

      April 21, 2016 at 12:21 pm

He. Has. A. KID you fucking retard!! It is not something he can just ignore to make these videos non stop. No one’s here to meet your demands. Sure hope you never have kids if you would ignore yours to make internet videos non stop. Seriously think about what you’re saying! And I’m sure your no prize catch guy.

  • April 6, 2016 at 1:49 pm

Now that’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout! Getting the creative juices flowing again is great, especially when you put it together like this! Even just doing a short and simple piece is great. All I ask, as your fan, is for you to continue giving me, and others, a reason to return. Let’s play videos are okay, but they’re very boring because there’s absolutely no work to go into those videos, except for some minor editing. I hope you post some more creative video like this one very soon. Don’t let yourself cool down just yet. 🙂

  • KingMike

    April 6, 2016 at 1:52 pm

In 2006, would you have guessed Capcom could go six years without releasing a new Mega Man game? (the last proper new Mega Man game was MM10, excluding the MM vs. Street Fighter fan game Capcom endorsed for the 25th anniversary).

  • Joker83

    April 6, 2016 at 2:07 pm

THANK YOU so much for 10+ years!!! I remember watching your videos on the old early 00’s Cinemassacre page. You guys are the best and this video was awesome! I totally had that Mega Man DOS floppy back in the day, that game was awful and I was glad you mentioned the random Toll Booth 🙂
Thanks again for all the hard work, and here is to another 10+!!

  • Messy Fart

    April 6, 2016 at 2:18 pm

The part near the beginning with the Mega Man soundtrack was fuckin’ hilarious LOL. Awesome episode!

  • April 6, 2016 at 2:23 pm

Finaly a new and very good AVGN episode.
You could talk hours about Megaman, you said nothing about Megaman 7 – 10 (which were good), Megaman X Command, ZX or Starforce.
There was even a Megaman on Genesis.
But as i said, it could go way to long. Eventually you or Mike could make a special about it. Like an sequel to this episode.

    Great job boys!

  • Fred . Fuchs

    April 6, 2016 at 5:50 pm

Another thing: this episode needs a commentary version. There are many things I would like to know like how accurately you reproduced the details of your room or if those NES games in the shoebox are precisely those from your childhood. Maybe even a “making of”.

  • marclawson

    April 6, 2016 at 6:14 pm

You need to hold up the powerglove with a cane! Then your arm won’t get tired when you’re moving. Playing with the powerglove is a disability, so it makes sense to use a cane. Especially in Jekyll and Hyde.

  • April 6, 2016 at 7:20 pm

The nostalgia hit me badly. In these past days I was looking at those old videos and checking on James appartments, wondering if the new tenants know what legend lived in there. And now, BAM, a travel back in time.

Is the part in the 2004 timeline an actual reconstruction of the real nerd room as it was back then?

Thanks for all the laughs, James, Nerd, Mike, ROB, Kyle, Boo, Yeti, old CRT TV, Weird Couch, Bugs, Bootsy, Glitch Gremlin and everybody, really. You have become a piece of my life.

    April 6, 2016 at 9:40 pm

This was a great episode, James. I think the special effects were excellent – I was totally drawn into the story. And so many great jokes in there (talking to the teddy bear!) I can tell you’ve been thinking about whether to continue the Nerd or not, or whether to develop it into something bigger and I think your conclusion is sound – it’s fine to go back and give people what they want from time to time. I wish you were on Patreon so I could send you a few dollars a month.

  • April 6, 2016 at 9:49 pm

Just finished reading everyone’s comments. I want to echo how great the Mega Man soundtrack commercial was (Duh duh duh dun-na-na du du du du!) and also great to see Bugs get the shit kicked out of him again (right through the damn wall!).
Also, no one talked about that great bit where Mega Man is looking at porn! That’s so awesome.
“If people wanted it, that would be a great thing.” It’s clear from all these comments that we all want it. Hope it’s not too long till the next one.

  • April 7, 2016 at 2:56 am

Thanks for all the laughs you fucking nerd. Been watching you since fucking 2005 or 6, I don’t know why I do it, I would rather glue my dick hole shut.

        April 7, 2016 at 11:49 am

Creatively, once you get to a certain point, you have to keep outdoing yourself, otherwise it gets stale. I love these high concept episodes, but I don’t think we’ll ever get back to the simple structure of just reviewing games and spewing obscenities. For better or for worse.

There used to be a new episode every two weeks… Now it’s one every 3 months. You have been doing this a long time though! But only 39 since rob is kind of lame. Mixed thoughts from me. I did really enjoy the video though.

“This was the most time-consuming AVGN episode to make, at 138+ hours of work. It beat the record, previously held by R.O.B. at 122+ hours.”
That’s a lot of man-hours for one episode! And it makes sense why he held it off until this date (April 6). Also, balancing family duties and weekly content (J&MM) and whatever other creative things up his sleeve…it’s understandable why it took so long!

    April 7, 2016 at 11:47 am

Thanks for another great episode James, and Mike, thanks for doing another title card again!! It’s been too long. I really understand that it must have gotten tiring to be strapped to AVGN for so long, I hope that your time away has reinvigorated you. To be honest, I hope that means more frequent episodes. Where things can get stale over time for you guys, for myself (at least) this was my favorite show for a long time. I miss it so much. Where jokes may have felt old here and there, the show itself was always welcome and a fun time and escape. Thanks for all the years of it.

  • April 7, 2016 at 12:15 pm

Why isn’t my comment from yesterday showing up here?

It was very nicely written and complimentary, that’s a shame. Anyways, the jist of it was that while we all appreciate the very hard work and long hours you have been putting into these videos, we would appreciate simpler ones just as much. Most of us were drawn here by a guy playing a game and talking about it, that has always been number one. I hope you don’t think you have to outdo yourself every time, because most of us would be extremely pleased with that sort of AVGN content, especially if it meant more content more often. Just throwing it out there.

I’m also curious if anyone (especially you James, or Mike) out there have tried either of the following NES games: “Nightshade” and “Deja Vu”. They are both interesting titles with a lot to talk about, and they were big parts of my childhood. It would mean a lot to me if I could get your thoughts on them, and I think Nightshade would be a great game to cover for the site at some point.

    Thanks again guys!

I grew up with an (very outdated) Dos PC, and didn’t really get any current console systems until the PS1 era, so it was great to see a shitty game from my past that I spent a lot if time with, Dos Mega Man.

Oh, man, the nostolgia for stuff that I thought was “eh. It’s alright” at the time.
I still remember when Mega Man showed up in a order-by-mail book pamphlet at school and the trouble I went through to get my folks to buy it.

…then a few years later, I hadn’t learned my lesson and got my folks to buy me Dos Mega Man 3, as well.

Haven’t watched AVGN for a long time as I personally think the newer episodes (2012->) simply lacked the “feeling” of the original episodes, maybe I was just grown out of it or something, can’t tell. Anyway, when I saw James’s update of this new upcoming 10th Anniversary episode on Facebook, I thought why not to give my old hero a shot. And I’m happy I did cause man.. THIS WAS FUCKING AWESOME!
This episode literally brought the series back to the past and made me remember all those good old times as a kid when me and my friends gathered to watch a new Nerd episode (which we ALWAYS waited for soo impatiently) and laughed so hard the tears would come out! And that missing “feeling” I told ya, the one’s that I said has been gone..well with this episode it was back with a BANG. 🙂

So Thank you James (and Mike!), Cinemassacre really was a big part of my child-teenhood and it was really nice to discover the place again after all these years and be brought back to the past that I’ll never forget.
So keep on rocking you guys, you are awesome.

Last but not least I need to congratulate the anniversary of the guy who STILL after all these tough years keeps playing the shitty games for us normal immortals; that’s just sick!

I know that you don’t really take requests, but The Three Stooges game on the NES would make a seriously funny AVGN episode. It might not suck bad enough, but it definitely sucks pretty bad.

I guess you already have. Did I say Stooges? I meant Bad Dudes. Ha ha

That’s the storyline the movie might have taken. Glad you’re back on board – fan since Opie and Anthony gave you a shout out almost 10 years ago.

Kasparov is good at protecting his king, but will he be able to protect his ass when in prison?
MOSCOW, Russia — Former world champion Gary Kasparov was sentenced to 5 days in jail on Sunday after defeating Russian president Vladimir Putin in a contentious chess match earlier this weekend. Formally, Kasparov was charged with “defrauding a government official,” as it was determined that he couldn’t have won the game in just 11 moves without cheating.

Great Episode as always. When you travel back to 2004 to meet yourself doing the Jekyll & Hyde review, I noticed that the stuffed animal the 2004 Nerd is talking to, has 2015 stitched on it right foot.

Other than that, keep up the great work! Love it all, big fan since the beginning!

Fan here since late 2008(Atari Porn episode got me hooked). Watched the show religiously since,to the point even Kevin Finn(Glitch Gremlin) was on my own podcast.

Anyways this episode was good. When you visited your past self that was funny af.. Cool you dig Witchfinder General but dont like anchovies? LOL I wonder what the Nerd likes then on his pizza. I bet you’re a plain pepperoni type eh? I would love to see you review some actual arcade cab games sometime.

  • April 29, 2016 at 12:53 pm

Good. Shitty games are still being made. We need our hero.

  • May 5, 2016 at 3:38 pm

Been watching This series since season 1. I stop in every now and again to check it out. Every episode is entertaining.

    Those tunes ROCK!

Megaman 64 looks like it might be rather fun. Not a true Megaman game, but more like Zelda. The system was nearly devoid of RPG games so this might have been fun back in the day.

  • May 26, 2016 at 6:19 pm

Pretty sure the nerd dropping a Witchfinder General reference in the middle of a Megaman video is one of my all time favorite AVGN moments. Utterly ended me.

    June 16, 2016 at 1:34 pm

How ironic is it that AVGN complains about shitty dialogue interrupting the good stuff when he has annoying, bizarre character conflict and flashbacks in between every individual game review? I keep skipping them like he wishes he could skip the game dialogue. Stop making me watch stuff that isn’t about the games!

Omg Megaman Legends… I had to create an account just because I’m so pissed off! I watched a lot of your videos and it never got so much under my skin LOL I don’t know why, maybe because I’m really attached to this series XD The monkey, the mustache man and the shopping center… Really! Geez, even the DOS version wasn’t this bad !

  • December 1, 2016 at 3:03 pm

It is certainly good not to fluch out your games. That is probably the reason why there are only something like 50 different Megaman games out there. It’s a good thing they didn’t make any more.
