Mike & Bootsy – Robotron 2084

Those walking brains from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde sure do get around!

Robotron is so good! I have fond memories of playing free PC remake called Robotron Blitz as a kid. It is really good. You still can easily download it in Web. I actually have it on my PC at work and play when I have 5-10 free minutes 🙂

Makes me think of Smash TV

I think both were by the same people (Williams?). Defender also. They goal was additing games lol

I remember that game for beeing hard as fuck and it seems I remembered pretty well. ^^

Learned about this game from Ready Player One

I love how hard Mike rages out. “I WAS LISTENING TO YOU TALK!” Sheesh, calm down there killer. Bottsy was like, uhhhh, should I just leave so you don’t have to listen to me talk anymore?

Dude takes gaming WAY too serious.

Where does Mike say it in the video? I can’t find the part.

Never played this, but it reminds me of another awesome retro game, Berzerk

Yeah, I thought so too.

There was a hack of this called Llamatron on the Atri ST and Amiga – even crazier if you can believe
February 12, 2016 at 6:35 pm
Would you believe that Jeff Minter’s hack was what I actually played before the real thing? Oh, and he did the Defender and Tempest sequels as well.

So apparently Mike has no clue that you are supposed to rescue the family by walking into them and that the green guys are immortal bad guys stalking the family.
February 12, 2016 at 5:42 pm
A classic from Eugene Jarvis – same guy that programmed Defender & Stargate. On the 90’s CD-ROM “William Arcade Classics” for PC there are some great interviews where they “bleep” out his swear words with Defender sounds.

If you like trippy stuff like this, you should have a go at Jeff Minter’s crazy Llamasoft antics, like Llamatron, Revenge of the Mutant Camels, and his Tempest and Defender titles.

The red guys are called Grunts. The big green square fuckers are tanks. Tanks are not good guys, they can’t be killed and they kill the family members you’re trying to save. I believe the guys who come out of the ball are called spheroids. Spheroids suck ass because they have a +/- 10 pixel range above or below you when they shoot. Also their bullets drag across the walls.

This game does look really addicting. I like the videos where they play challenging games they enjoy, rather than games which typically get the distinction of “shitty.”

So Mike hopes to live to about 104. And then get killed by neon robots. Well, the former part is more possible at least these days. 😉

Unless you’re really rich, the best way to experience those is just by getting Mame.

I love the hell out of Roboton 2084. Next to Galaga, it’s my favorite classic arcade game of all time.
This used to be at a bar in my hometown. I’d play it for hours on end and let me tell you, when you play for high-scores, you’ll be dripping sweat and your arms will hurt like hell the next day.
My high-score was something like 13 million, which must have taken 2+ hours of playing. It’s insane to think some people can get 100 or 150 million at this game without dying.

This was ported to N64. From the screenshots it looks a lot different though.

BTW Robotron 64 is AWESOME. Wish I’d played it as a kid. I just tried and made it to level 107 on the initial go. My eyes are burning though because you don’t feel like you can blink. I’d like to see them give it a go sometime. I recommend it.

Games like this probably influenced the COD Black Ops, top down zombie thing which I had a lot of fun playing.
