NIGHTMARE and Beyond – Board James (Episode 27)

Mike Matei / December 4th, 2015

It’s the season finale of Board James! For the moment, this is the last planned episode, just as DreamPhone was. Nothing is ever definitive. We will see what the future holds. For now, enjoy this epic conclusion to this year’s story arch.

This time, we look at Nightmare, a VHS board game from the 90’s. It was part of the Atmosfear series, and was a very fun game to play with a group. It has always been the biggest request for Board James. But we go beyond Nightmare, into other games, and deeper into the Board James mythos.

Music by Andreas Hedlund.

And thanks once again to A Pyro Design for this season’s Logo.

So glad I waited up all night for this. The Saw-inspired “Operation” was a great touch! Candyland was insanity, James looked like Kurt Cobain. Motherfucker Clarence Mike. 😀 Game within a game within a game. That ending. You keep topping yourself, James!!!

      December 4, 2015 at 9:54 am

This entire season was like a smorgasbord of wild fan theories. Anyone care to extrapolate on that ending? Is it definitive or just another layer in the deep Board James mythos? The idea that there are no other episodes planned leaves a lot for us to chew on in this installment.

        December 4, 2015 at 10:13 am

I’m wondering if Board James was in jail for the murders of Bootsy and Mike after the Dream Phone episode, or was he a crazy person in jail to begin with and the entire story of Board James was in his head the whole time. Would love to see that story if it’s the latter. Just wondering. I like that Board James–or what’s left of him–ends up with his true loves; his board games. Great ending.

        December 4, 2015 at 10:15 am

Is anyone going to find all the release dates for the Board James episodes and correspond them to letters? Today is 12/4/15, what letter is that?

      • December 5, 2015 at 2:59 pm

Mightylink: That is too few letters there. We are looking for 27×3 letters if we were to use Day, Month and Year… Or is that Month, Day, Year… And should we use all 4 digits for Year?

You know what? Just today doesn’t make sense either.

Man, I still can’t follow what the hell is supposed to be happening in these things anymore lol. Still hilarious and great though! :p

  • December 4, 2015 at 10:09 am

Hey guys someone has to decrypt the release dates of the episodes so they match letters on the alphabet (or maybe only one letter per release date)

It’s easy so I’ll be doing it, probably just a joke that says “Fuck You” but we have to try.

      Is it scrambled?

      • bud

        December 4, 2015 at 10:41 am

I’ve tried different combinations of this (adding months + days) and also running them through anagram solvers, but still nothing. It is interesting that it spells out “dead” though.

      • December 4, 2015 at 10:42 am

Half are numbers. Half are letters.

      • December 4, 2015 at 10:50 am

        “13 13 dead” then?
I still don’t realy get it.

We might need a new calender, with an additional 13th month.

        Of course, yes!
Its the sequel or remake of 13 Dead End Drive, isn’t it?
I actually have seen it already.
Man, I need to fix my brain. 🙂

  • Matthias Miessner

    December 4, 2015 at 10:43 am

A brilliant and disturbing ending. An absolute masterpiece. The series can barely continue after this great final. The only option would be a reboot I guess.

      • Matthias Miessner

        December 4, 2015 at 4:19 pm

Well I seriously don’t think that James had a Happy End in mind for this. Maybe this even is the end of the series and we never get to know what really happend. I mean, after all an unsolved mystery is allways more interesting to our imagination. If it continues, I look forward to the story either evolving or getting solved.

We need more Board James. It doesn’t feel…concluded.

    December 4, 2015 at 11:04 am

WOW, James! THAT was a Magnum Opus for SURE! The amazing twists and turns regarding the plot, multiple deaths, realities, etc. as well as the superb acting, editing and costume work make this a cinematic achievement! This absolutely surpasses ANYTHING I’ve seen on T.V. or at the movies, and I thank you for this outstanding piece of entertainment from you all!

    December 4, 2015 at 11:17 am

Okay, I’ve just watched the episode three times. Just want to say that the “Gatekeeper” sequence keeps getting funnier and funnier. It’s great that we can enjoy these videos on two levels (gut-reaction and cerebral). This is definitely the most multifaceted video to date.

  • Ben Albright

    December 4, 2015 at 11:40 am

The ending made no sense. Unlike DreamPhone, this doesn’t feel conclusive at all.

    December 4, 2015 at 12:21 pm

Basically I believe the entire series was just in James head and he was in prison for carrying out real life hangman like murders. He was executed during this video because the guy at the beginning says it’s time to “BJ”

  • JordyLaFordge

    December 4, 2015 at 12:41 pm

NumBWUUH!!! I laughed my ass off at that scene, was that actually footage from the VHStape?

  • December 4, 2015 at 1:11 pm

Holy fuck that was awesome. So all this is like a death dream? Board James did slit his wrist in an earlier episode. Is this James personal Hell? I’m going crazy trying to decipher all of this. Special Effects were awesome, too. Bootsy being eaten by the Alligator was priceless.

  • December 4, 2015 at 1:14 pm

can someone explain this to me ? 1313dead ? alright ?! but what about the hats ? in the secret message it said “pay attention to my hats and the release dates”

  • December 4, 2015 at 1:27 pm

Thanks James. Somebody make a Board James, board game now please.

  • December 4, 2015 at 1:28 pm

The hats spell out “after” then he wears a skull and crossbones hat for two episodes. Hmmmm. After death?

  • December 4, 2015 at 1:36 pm

That was great! I love the purposely sub-par visual effects!

  • December 4, 2015 at 1:37 pm

And Bootsy writes some awesome tunes.

You should keep doing Board James. They don’t have to be huge productions like this.

  • call me squinky

    December 4, 2015 at 2:23 pm

Hilarious, disturbing and visually excellent. That 13 Dead End Drive set design is awesome. That must have taken ages to build?
Was Board James really executed? Or were they just playing the Capital Punishment board game? To be continued…?

  • December 4, 2015 at 3:01 pm

Boardception, if there’s a name for it!

I’m sorry James, Mike, Bootsy. But this is too good a series to end. I won’t believe it. IT IS NOT OVER!

  • Blue Wizard

    December 4, 2015 at 3:22 pm

I was thoroughly entertained by the whimsical series of unfortunate events in Board James season 1. The follow up in season 2 was more convoluted and ended with more confusion and questions. The ending, however, could definitively put the series to rest or allow for a reboot. I hope for the latter, as there are many games I’d still like to see covered.

Maybe 2016 will be the year for the bullshit man.
And then, one day, we’ll casually click on a new video of someone playing a board game…GUESS WHO

  • Simon

    December 4, 2015 at 3:49 pm

That was amazing, SO DARK and creepy as fuck. Wow!
The Saw inspired “Operation” and Hangman parts especially 😮
Not sure I understand the ending though. So was all of the episode a dream or what?

  • Ryan Ferneau

    December 4, 2015 at 4:25 pm

Haha, just last week I discovered that my family owns two different editions of CandyLand, so now I get to complain about all the redesigns.

  • December 4, 2015 at 5:00 pm

Awesome this topped dream phone and Mr bucket. Don’t ever let them end…there’s still board games in that closet

  • December 4, 2015 at 5:06 pm

Hey there, I’ve been watching Cinemassacre’s videos for a very long time and for whatever reason haven’t ever made an account or commented on anything and this Board James finale is what changed my mind about all of that haha

Its’ crazy to see James’ film making skills improve and evolve as time goes on, and this video (to me) is his best to date. You guys are only getting better and I’m very excited to see what you produce next.

Thanks again for making these videos and for all that you do!

  • December 4, 2015 at 5:25 pm

Once again, James kills it with the practical effects. I laughed insanely during the Crocodile cut. It was perfect.

  • Nicholas Demos

    December 4, 2015 at 5:28 pm

So… where does that leave AVGN? I was under the impression that the two were “connected”. So in theory, going by your finale AVGN is gone as well… I’m wondering if the next AVGN episode will reference this or if you just leave it out entirely…
Can’t say I wasn’t kinda bummed tht AVGN wasn’t even mentioned in this..

    • Simon

      December 4, 2015 at 5:35 pm

I wonder that too. It kinda throws a spanner in the works of the AVGN/BJ episode “Video Games” and even the AVGN episode “The Crow”, they seemed connected.

  • DeathBlow

    December 4, 2015 at 5:34 pm

At least his middle name wasn’t Mervin. : )

  • Lelygax

    December 4, 2015 at 5:35 pm

If I understood it correctly, Mike is the real culprit and Board James was somehow framed, maybe not even on purpose since Mike could’ve also died on an accident. I bet that it all started as just a prank that gone terribly wrong.

Then Board James was sent to jail and became mad with grief, while knowing the truth and at the same time trying to deny it (hiding his memories from himself). But as Board James itself said on Candy Land, as you play more games, you remember more about your past self and thus he recovered his memory at 13 Dead End Drive episode.

  • Satnav

    December 4, 2015 at 6:01 pm

I loved the performance and presentation, but I have honestly no clue what actually happened. What was up with the T-800 Jameses in the Omega Virus episode? How can Board James be the AVGN if he’s dead now, unless James is ending the latter series very abruptly? Was this all some Inception-like fantasy within fantasy?

That being said, it was all entertaining to watch, and I urge James to resolve this in the future. 😉

    • Schizima

      December 5, 2015 at 3:26 am

I highly doubt board james has any conceptual connection to AVGN other than the humor style

  • December 4, 2015 at 7:41 pm

I wanted to like it, I loved the series so far. But this one just didnt make sense. I really liked the sets and effects you did but I just couldnt make sense out of what was happening. It seemed like you were trying for some inception like thing going into the different games but I just felt it wasnt explained very well and made the whole thing confusing trying to sort it all out.

  • December 4, 2015 at 8:01 pm

omg there’s no way that video is real hahaha

  • December 4, 2015 at 8:09 pm

wow that was like a real horror movie lol. The operation game was so sick but genius lols

I miss old episodes, when Board James was more about… well… board games. What the hell did i just see here? What is this? Because for sure its not about board games anymore. Its more like fan fiction mini-series episode of little horrors or something… I miss the Board James from early episodes. It was very fun for me to acually see all those creative games and how you play them together without all this silly, neverending horror plot about ghosts and gore. 🙁

  • Schizima

    December 5, 2015 at 3:15 am

My guess is that James is in jail for being framed for the murders, and he uses board games to plot his revenge for when/if he gets out of jail.

this was the multiverse of board james. all realities affecting each other like the dc multiverse or that futurama episode.

Really great episode James. You guys did a great job with the special effects and the backround scenes. • December 5, 2015 at 6:03 pm

The way I see it the games are of a supernatural nature and whoever plays them finds themselves take on the role of the player character in the actual game itself, as for what Board James says about the rules thing…I see it as like a dungeon master in D&D, I also find that in a way in the game world if you die you come back as another player character..the game world itself can be best summed up as a place where you can check out anytime you like but you can never the titular hotel in the Eagles song Hotel California.

    December 5, 2015 at 9:13 pm

Wow. Was not expecting that. It was gruesome, hilarious, and awesome, all at the same time. Kind of like someone’s bad acid trip. But it leaves far more questions than answers. We keep hearing “dead” several times in this episode. Does it mean that Bootsy and Mike or dead, or is this just in B. James’ imagination? It feels like someone’s idea of a bad acid trip. Anyway, enough from me. Well done guys! Look forward to the next season of Board James… whenever that is!

I kinda miss when Board James was just about the games.

Well, and watching Mike cheat. He is such a motherfucker.

Board James covered a lot of territory…this was a gametastic climax!

I love forbidden bridge! Wish it got the classic board James treatment, more goofy and people trying to mess with each other though. I remember playing with my brother and making him hang off the bridge before hitting the statues head to make it swing. Good times.

Is it just me or does that dummy they threw down the stairs at 5:13 look like spock.

I’ve been thinking, maybe BJ forgot his childhood and memories of his friends, and thats why he went batshit crazy. Thats what Mike and Bootsy’s ‘deaths’ represent, and the “resurrection” was James’ last ditch attempt to fix things, but it didnt quite work out, so he became the Nerd. Here, he does ‘kind of’ reconnect with his childhood, but in a different way.

what the fuck did i just watch?

  • December 7, 2015 at 1:56 pm

An interesting episode, but I’m so confused… so… looking forward to that analysis/explanation video now that the ‘season’ is over. 😮

Also kinda wish there was more said about certain games than what was. But eh.. guess it worked in a nostalgic sense.

The one in October was 13 Dead End Drive.

  • December 8, 2015 at 4:45 am

lol I like how this series went from totally innocent to just bat sh** crazy. At the same time, I hope you don’t stray too far when it comes to reviewing board games because to tell you the truth, that’s what I liked Board James for. However, the production value is amazing and I laughed as per usual. Thanks for the video guys.

    • December 8, 2015 at 1:56 pm

yea i preferred the simple board game reviews honestly. A for effort, now just do a review on Life.

Don’t get me wrong, I love this show and I can’t fault this episode in regards to its high production value; in that respect it kicked plenty of ass and was fun to watch ^^ but after they began to play Candy Land, I gave up on trying to discern any kind of explanation. I was looking forward to something just a bit more lucid in the series finale. Oh well, next up.. the explanation of the mythos. 🙂

OMG THANK YOU…. I have been looking for this boardgame forever… I couldn’t remember the name for the life of me. I’m surprised you used this for december instead of halloween.

I just noticed something – did anyone see James rolled 42 as his age? Douglas Adams reference – the answer to life-the universe-and everything?

  • December 23, 2015 at 7:48 am

Loved this, and though I love AVGN, this is just so much more fun to watch. Question though…as I know you like to reference fave films, some bits look like homages, but I can’t place what you’re referencing, particularly some of the graveyard shots. Is this my imagination, or are you giving a tip of the hat in some places?

After being fired from my old job 4 months ago, i’ve had luck to learn about this great company online that was a lifesaver for me… They offer online home-based work. My last month payment after working with them for 6 months was 12000 bucks… Great thing about it was that only requirement for the job is basic typing and reliable internet…If you think this could be for you then find out more here…

Very awesome video. Thanks guys! I’m really hoping this isn’t the end though. I’m also hoping you guys go back to doing random board games. It’s really cool how you guys recently gave Board James a deep story and how each episode compliments the next, but it was a lot more fun (for me that is) to see you guys just get together and play some fun board games without the dark creepy atmosphere and such. All in all though, great episode and great series. Hoping to see more!

Wow… Just wow. This was an amazing finale that I have only just had the pleasure of getting to. Nicely done guys! That shit was next level AF!

THAT WAS CRAZY AND AWESOME! I’m not sure just what happened there, but it was great! I’m guessing Mike and Bootsy weren’t dead after all and they were trapped in Board James board game world? Oooorrr is this all his hallucinations? So many good jokes here. “You’re banished to the black hole!” 😀 The Gatekeeper’s a dick. “That’s a stupid name, isn’t it!” Nothing like that could fly today. “Are you ready, BJ?” Hahahaha. That Candyland segment? Wtf! Haha, he got impaled in the head with a lollypop. Liked that you got multiple games into this video, too. Board James is brilliant! Thanks!

That was so great! I played nightmare last year with some friends at a party, we went in the basement tuned off the lights and played the game with beer in hand. We didn’t win but we had a lot of fun.
