Really surprised this wasn’t the final one since it’s so infamous! Can’t wait to see what’s next. Keep up the great work James <3

    Ah, that cover’s a classic.

I find them fantastic to be honest. Haha.. The one I hate were the pixel ones like Metroid and Super Mario Bros. The japanese version had those pretty handrawn ones instead.

I always thought Mega Man’s Piccasoish misshapen body on this cover deserved this manner of critique. Well done!

Awesome. Great game and funny cover.

    You are the best James

Hey guys, after finishing Dr Jekyll & Hyde the game the movie, how about “Megaman the Cover the movie”. I´d really like a deeper look as how this disfigured guy saves the world from evil. Maybe that´s why he´s called Megaman, cause he does it despite his shortcomings.

  • December 2, 2015 at 12:31 pm

How could you not mention that the Mega Man from the cover was made into an actual in-game character in Street Fighter X Tekken??

So the world from the cover is now an actual, canon, alternate Mega Man universe.

  • December 2, 2015 at 12:51 pm

Earlier than expected, but honestly that’s probably for the best.. because now the obvious one is out of the way.
Looking forward to what’s next! 🙂

You seriously bad-mouthed MegaMan PAL-version cover?? Its fuckin brilliant and clean, with monsters from the actual game on it. Shame! OT. The US versions are insanely fucked up

To be honest, I never thought that the cover was all that bad… until you pointed it out to us. It looks kind of like a cross between the left over artwork from an Atari game, and kids’ art. Still… I can think of worse art covers. Like this!

Seriously! What is this? Is this a cover for a space shooter game, or a movie called “Banjo Pickers in Space”? Either way, the messaging is not very clear. Anyway, rant over. Great vid. Possibly the finest AVGN this year!

Funny enough I actually read up on the reason for the banjo player. The marketing team feared that with so many shoot’em ups on SNES, players would see Phalanx as a generic game in the genre.

So they asked this old man (who has taken photos as Santa as well) to pose for the cover art. The random imagery of a banjo player on a snes shoot’em-up was to catch people off and generate interest for the game with the bizarre cover art.

And you have to give them credit. To this day, people still talk about the cover art.

Oh man, can’t talk about bad game covers without talking about MegaMan! Yup, with MegaMan 9, they embraced it and made it crappy on purpose, haha.

And why does MegaMan look like a man on the covers, when he’s more of a boy?
