Seriously, fyi. I know it’s not the point of these videos but out of every game you’ve played here THIS game is the one of the few that you should SERIOUSLY sit down and play seriously for an hour or two one day. This game is fucking AMAZING once you learn all the ins and outs of the gameplay. One of the best platformers EVER imho. Definitely not a Bubsy or .. good lord.. any of the other billion side scroller knock offs.

Also, there IS a theme. Each world is a separate era of television. So really.. this should be right up Cinemassacre’s road. Give this game a damn chance for once because anyone who does will end up loving it. It’s not a game you can sit down for 30 minutes in an episode like this and get how good it is immediately. ESPECIALLY when you’re so used to playing derivative crap.

I guess my point is.. Imagine if you had never played SMB 2 or something and you sat down and chatted while playing it in the background. There are a LOT of amazing games that, on the side without full attention you’re going to think are so-so or lackluster. I’m not saying you need to do an (another) episode on it or anything but you should REALLY sit down and try this.

Oh, and you are supposed to use your tongue on the powerups.. You guys kept just kicking them which destroys them.

Would recommend you guys playing Gex 3D on the PSX. One of my favourite platformers to this day.

    • November 19, 2015 at 5:48 pm

Gex 3D was also on the N64. They should definitely give either version a try.

  • November 16, 2015 at 3:41 am

Isn’t there a CGI cutscene at the start that explains the premise? Or maybe that’s only on the PS1 version. Point is Gex is a couch potato who loves TV. He ends up getting sucked into the TV dimension by the villain. Anyway the worlds are all TV channels basically. There’s the horror channel or cartoon channel or kung fu. Stuff like that. Other then that I agree with you. The game’s ok. I prefer the two sequels on PS1 though. They’re 3D platformers like Super Mario 64. Maybe you guys will give them a shot in a later episode.

  • November 16, 2015 at 4:01 am

    Hey Guys!
I don’t know Gex on 3DO, but the Sega Saturn-Version has a story. Not good, but anyway.
I don’t even think Gex is a mascot of Panasonic. I have it on Sega Saturn, as i mentioned, and on N64. Someone else wrote it was on PS1, too.

Awesome. I remember having all three of these games on Playstation.

  • November 16, 2015 at 7:02 am

wow! Remappable buttons on a console!! I cannot understand how this is a standard function in any game.

    • November 16, 2015 at 7:10 am

Hmm.. “– not a standard function –.” (should learn to proofread better.)

    • November 16, 2015 at 1:51 pm

I’ve seen a lot of games do this. Most either let you remap the buttons or offer multiple control schemes.

      November 19, 2015 at 10:34 pm

It wasn’t that rare in 16-bits era and later… Streets of Rage, Revenge of Shinobi and many others allowed to select a control scheme, you probably never noticed that 🙂

  • November 16, 2015 at 7:52 am

Acording to Mike gex is his long lost twin: A cheap kinda generic, wanna-be cool caracther. ^_^

I remember playing this as a kid (since my uncle owned a 3DO); also a game show game that has a pez dispenser with a fez cap, an early survivor horror puzzle game named ‘D’, advanced dungeons & dragons which was doom-ish, and killing time on the 3DO. You guys should try some of those games, since they probably don’t hold up well today.

How can you miss Freddy’s sweater on Jason-Leatherface??

  • sutekh22

    November 16, 2015 at 9:45 am

The Jason – Leatherface hybrid is also wearing a variation of the Freddy Krueger sweater. It’s a massive slasher hybrid.

Gex is my favourite video game character, and I really want his series to be continued.

Don’t throw those controllers away just yet! A trick I used to do as far back as Sega Master System was to take them apart, and clean the contacts on the chipset with a pencil eraser. You might actually be able to see a bunch of gunk buildup on them. Put it back together and it will be in working order once again.

Look, I don’t care what games you guys do or do not like–that’s your opinion. I’m not somebody who’s gonna get up in arms because of something so petty. But, you should really give this game another go.

It might not be perfect, but it can be fun to play (at least the Playstation port is).

GEX was a late try at a “mascot” for the 3DO. But it didn’t work.

Square Enix is trying to revive the GEX series.

Bucky O’Hare? The old Michael Golden comic was cool. Not sure about the subsequent cartoon.

Well, I vaguely know Gex from the ps1, largely because I had a demo disc with Gex 2 on it. I kind of do want to play through this series at some point, but it’s interesting that it had its origin on the. 3DO. I don’t think Gex is that bad by 90s mascot standards. At least I don’t think he’s Bubsy bad, or at least his games are better. I don’t think he was sufficient to sell 3DOs, mind you. He’s definitely not the system’s Mario in terms of success.

    GEX 3 child hood favorite

  • November 17, 2015 at 11:25 pm

I really want to know if James and Mike has seen the new “Ash VS Evil Dead” show! And I want to hear their thoughts so bad! I think it’s the best show in many years, and it lives up to the films, and then some.

  • November 17, 2015 at 11:45 pm

Awesome to see Kyle. And he made a really good point about the game having no theme.

Mike compared it to Mario in that way, but Mario has clear themes.
He’s a plumber, so he uses pipes. Plumbers work with shit, and fungus grows in shit, so a bunch of stuff is fungus/mushrooms. The shitty pipes can lead him underground, or into bodies of water. There are clear (even if figurative) themes.

This game was awesome, I used to play it on my dad’s computer a lot. The only other Gex game I played was the one that came after this on the 64.. I had a lot of fun with that too

Reminds me of Jazz Jackrabbit, 1) for being green, 2) there was a mention of Bucky O’Hare, of which I had the shoes and a free watch with the purchase of those shoes, and 3) look at that menu. Like EXACTLY the same as JJ.

Hey guys, just to let you know, Panasonic didn’t make 3DO. They may have made your 3DO, but Electronic Arts were the ones behind it. Panasonic just made the hardware, as did Sanyo and Goldstar. Trip Hawkins is a genious and was able to create a system without fronting the costs for the hardware. Sure it failed, but the mere idea from an economics standpoint is outstanding and would not happen today.

  • November 29, 2015 at 5:36 am

This is a game that, as a child, I never got to own or play because — let’s face it — who the hell had a 3DO? However being a big fan of lizards and geckos in particular I would see the ad in the video game magazines each month, see photos of game play from the game, cool “gecko with attitude” cover art and more and imagine myself playing the game. I wanted it badly, I wanted to spend my next six Christmas’ worth of presents just for my parents to buy me a damn 3DO and a copy of Gex.

    I’m glad they didn’t.

Personally, I really loved Gex (on the PSone). They even had sequels too, which were decent too. No offence, but I think you guys really suck at that game (or at least in the 3DO version). You’re great gamer’s and all, just not at that game.

Btw, it may be interesting to know that the same creators of the Gex trilogy are the same ones you made the Tomb Raider series.

Gex for PS1 was a great game. I loved how it said lines from movies or TV shows. Made me more interest in hearing what he is going to say then actually playing it. It was still fun to play though.

I had no idea that Gex started on the 3DO. Good to see Kyle in a video! Thanks!

I actually knew someone who had a 3DO back then. We played Gex and PO’d. PO’d was kind of like a Duke Nukem type thing, with the guns, gore, and girls. I always liked that you played as a big fat chef, at least according to the box art. Both that game and Gex seemed very cool and cutting edge to me as a child at that specific point in time. Looking back, like you said, just okay. Characters like Gex and Bubsy were trying too hard and failing to be cool. Sonic just was! Mario wasn’t trying to be cool! He was just a humble plumber.
