You spelled something wrong. It’s “conglaturation”, not “congratulations”.

    Where’s the glitch gremlin James!!!

  • October 30, 2015 at 4:14 am

I watched the remake back in 1998 in theater twice and it was scary but watching it on regular screen TV sucks.

The skeleton pushing the woman into the acid pool is my favorite scene. I see that gif everywhere.

  • October 30, 2015 at 5:10 am

This was actually pretty good. Probably the film-maker realized that, if the characters all did the sensible thing, there’d be no movie. Any William Castle film always makes me think of Matinee (1993), starring John Goodman as a Castle-expy.

I actually didnt know that the 1998 version was a remake. Thanks for this review. I will check this one out! And maybe it was a ghost and not your dvd that glithed it out. haha!
Maybe soon have a Evil Dead 2013 review soon now when Ash vs Evil Dead is out? Love your work Cinemassacre but too bad that Halloween tradition didnt exist in Sweden when I was growing up.

the ‘it’s cinemassacres moooooonster maaaaadness’ intro cracked me up xD

      October 30, 2015 at 9:16 am

Yeah, seems like it keeps getting more and more distorted as it goes on.

  • October 30, 2015 at 6:02 am

It’s fair to say that the “Old Dark House” story was a bit cliche’ by this point, James, but keep in mind “The Haunting” came out in 1963, and is arguably one of the high watermarks for the entire genre. Modern perceptions of “Haunted Houses” (including Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion attraction) owe a LOT the The Haunting, so let’s not bury the genre just yet.

(that being said, how about a review of “The Haunting” (1963) in an upcoming Monster Madness installment?)

I saw this after i’d seen the 90’s remake in the cinema and it was still enjoyable. Any movie with Vincent Price in it is worth a watch simply because of THAT voice!

Whoa James. You must really like this movie. That was one of the longest Moster Madness reviews I can remember.

Remakes usually kind of suck, but I actually LOVED the remake of this one. It was creepy as hell!

I actually just watched this one on TCM a couple of weeks back. I was surprised how much i enjoyed it. It had some legit jump scares. The climax was silly, but i loved the line “When you started playing this game of MURDER, you didn’t realize *I* was playing, too.”

  • JayRam

    October 30, 2015 at 10:35 am

Did James just flub the intro? xD

    • MrBrrumpkins

      October 30, 2015 at 12:04 pm

Yeah, which is silly. Some of the intros were corny and don’t fit into MM. Well, there’s more important things to worry about. James saved this year’s MM with his awesomeness, ability of gnarlyness, shit kickin’, foot in assing and other types of things dealing with fists and windramming.

      • October 30, 2015 at 12:12 pm

        the intros are awesome!!

      • JayRam

        October 30, 2015 at 5:48 pm

You know, I usually don’t care if other people help James out with the intros, each one bringing something new to it. But this year, the guy burping “It’s Cinemassacre’s Monster Madness” was horrible. I’m thinking, Are we fucking 8 again?

  • October 30, 2015 at 12:11 pm

i saw this film a few months ago, it was really good
    Happy almost Halloween

I saw this film on TV when i was very young, about 7, and the only part i remember was the skeleton, it take the shit out of I wonder if Cinemassacre ever talk about the only good haunted house ever made, The Haunting ?

No mention of the Dark Castle remake?

    October 31, 2015 at 1:13 am

Haven’t seen this one, maybe I’ll watch it later, but it’s not high on my priority list. I do remember seeing a haunting movie made in the 70’s about paranormal investigators trying to survive the night in a haunted place. Or… at least people. It was invitation only. Can’t remember the name of it for the life of me, as I saw it years ago, but that one is definitely worth checking out. It has some kind of machine in it towards the end, don’t know what it was. But that one had a lot of deaths in it.

I did see the remake of this, and it was… disappointing to say the least. The CGI Ghosts were about as frightening as Casper the Friendly Ghost. Only one shot was really scary, and I won’t say what it was, so as not to spoil it. I did like Owen Wilson’s character in that one, though. He was hilarious!

The remake was good but the black and white original is just right for à Halloween marathon of horror classics… Good review.

Wow. You really butchered this one. I am still kind of scared of it to this day.

Also, I thought the actor who played Watson Pritchard was amazing.

This movie is self-aware and making fun of its genre? I don’t know about that. This movie just came off as really bad to me. I saw it live with Rifftrax commentary in theater with some friends one time. Now that was a good time.

But yeah that is one creepy DVD glitch, though. 😛

  • lotusclown

    November 2, 2015 at 4:00 am

yeah.. that last bit was disturbing James, i think the classic monsters may be trying to tell you to stop drawing attention to them and let them remain dead. lol

  • November 2, 2015 at 2:30 pm

That DVD glitching (or poor encoding) could easily be used for any creepy stuff.
