Back to the Future 2 – Today is the Future!

James / October 21st, 2015

In Back to the Future 2, Doc brings Marty and Jennifer to the future date of October 21, 2015. That actual day is now upon us! James, Mike and Kyle sit down and reflect upon the film’s legacy, and of its imaginary future predictions. It’s an ingenious work of science fiction, but when is it more science than fiction? Our nostalgia will lead us to the past, which is about the future, which is now the present.

4 p.m.? are you sure it’s not 4 a.m. ? They arrive in the dark, but I guess it was raining so it could just be that. But I always assumed the Cafe 80’s was happening in the morning.

      October 21, 2015 at 8:09 pm

If I recall correctly they arrive during a rainstorm and it clears up after a few minutes, revealing a bright sunny day

      • October 22, 2015 at 6:21 am

Also you can see (even) in this video that the clock has a light indicator for PM which has a little led on it. From that we can say for sure that it’s 4 PM. Also from the look of if Marty is not walking on the streets at the middle of the night (it is in California so they don’t have Midnight Sun there).

According to the lady on “World of the Psychic” in Ghostbusters II (1989), the world will end on February 14th, 2016, Valentine’s Day.

Also, according to the intro of the cartoon series “Thundar the Barbarian” (1980-1982), the apocalypse was supposed to happen in 1994.

Cubs are on the verge of getting swept…. aww. Mr Fusion powered the flux capacitor but the deLorean still ran on ordinary gasoline, that was a major element that…fueled the plot of part 3.

Not really a specific date, but in terms of future scifi movies, I always thought Minority Report definite had the closest predictions to what the future would actually be like (I think it’s like 2030 or something).

I remember reading that apparently Spielberg sat down a bunch of scientists in a hotel for like two weeks and got them to brainstorm what technology would be available by that time, and a lot of it has come by now.

I also liked how with a lot of the technology they were pretty humble, like they had “holograms” but most people still just used 2D screens, and even the holograms themselves just had depth to them, but they aren’t presented as being fully 360 degrees.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the phone-booth thing (I often say the same thing myself).

Also, when I watch the movie these days I’m less amazed by how similar (or dissimilar) the 2015 of Back to the Future is to the real 2015. But, by how much the evil alternate 1985 where Biff runs everything resembles the real 2015.

In the 3rd movie, I thought Doc said that Mr. Fusion was in place of the plutonium, but that the car always ran on regular gas. Am I mistaken?

    • October 21, 2015 at 9:13 pm

The flux capacitor was what needed plutonium. The car still had a fossil fuel engine to drive, so it needed regular gas. That is why in the Old West they needed to push the car.

  • October 21, 2015 at 5:56 pm

I’m not sure if anyone has already mentioned, but a date I’ve also somewhat known was that one of the psychics on Peter Venkman’s show, “World of the Psychic” in Ghostbusters 2, says the end of the world will be February 14, 2016. “Valentine’s Day. Bummer.” Next year!

Maybe it’s just where I live, but I think that pay-phones are still somewhat easy to come across, just not actual phone booths (that is, you can go to a gas station or store and find a pay phone on the wall, but not a separate structure designed just for the phone). So if there’s an emergency, you can MAYBE find one of those.

This is a funny invention from Part 2 that most people probably missed. It happens in the scene where Jennifer is trapped in the McFly house, hiding in the closet as Marty’s son watch 6 channels at once. It happens so quick you have to pause the movie to see it.
Here is a link to the image:

  • October 21, 2015 at 10:51 pm

When you mentioned phone booths, and that in BTTF2 they advanced them, I remembered that while phone booths dont exist anymore, college campuses now have emergency call boxes all over the place, which i guess is sort of relevant.

umm, at around 4.30 they talk about “mr fusion” the car always ran on normal gas (this was stated in the 3rd movie). Mr Fusion was for the flux capacitor. It’s in the name “mr FUSION” (fusion power) it creates the power needed and replaced the plutonium reactor to get the 1.21 gigawatts.

    still love those movies!

Also, here’s a better explanation of the Cubs thing:

The Cubs haven’t won a World Series since 1908. They haven’t even been in a World Series since 1945 and have only made the playoffs a handful of times. One of those was in 2015 where they made it all the way to the National League Championship Series, which is the last tournament before the World Series. As of today though, they were swept by the New York Mets, which means they aren’t going to the World Series.

BTTF2 predicted that the Cubs would beat a team from Miami with an alligator mascot. At the time, Miami didn’t have a baseball team, but in 1993 the Florida Marlins were formed operating out of the Miami area. In 2011, they officially changed their name to the Miami Marlins.

What is interesting though is that earlier in 2015, the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Tampa Bay Lightning to win the Stanley Cup. That means that BTTF2 predicted that a team from Chicago would beat a team from Florida in a championship game. They just got the sport wrong.

  • October 22, 2015 at 4:08 am

Everyone, even these guys, gets it wrong with regard to the hoverboard and water. The hoverboard CLEARLY works over water. The point they were making in the movie, is that you can’t kick forward in water. Without propulsion, you have to move a hover board like a skateboard. It would be like a surfboard. No propulsion, you’re not going anywhere. It “works” over water, you just have no means of propulsion without the futuristic rockets…or a paddle.

They don’t really mention the key element for both the flying cars and the hover boards is an alternative form of propulsion. Electromagnetism is fine for working on metal, but has serious limits. Same with any kind of flying car with current technology. Without some sort of propulsion system that can easily stabilize, we need wings, we need blasts of fire.

Just to maybe give a little hope, I’ve seen videos of scientists able to imbue electromagnetic properties in non-metalic items. Faint, and temporary, but actual.

Plasma waste converters are actually pretty similar to Mr. Fusion, though no actual fusion is involved. They use a plasma torch to convert garbage into synthetic gas, electricity, and chemically inert slag. The Stuff You Should Know podcast recently did an episode on them and it’s super interesting:

I just returned from a marathon of all three movies, and noticed something: Doc’s shirt in part II has cowboys and trains all over it, foreshadowing part III! It’s the sort of thing you never pick up on until you see a movie on the big screen and can finally make out all those little details.

Ghostbusters 2: Venkman interviews a woman Elaine. He asks her which day the earth is going to end and she answers “February 14, 2016”. I think it is a missed oppotunity to not have Ghostbusters 3 revolve around this, Ghostbusters saves the world on the date Venkman made fun of her for.

Great vid, guys! A few points- About the skateboard, you’re right, it technically exists. There’s a prototype for another one being made in Canada, which technically is more like a hoverdrone, than a hoverboard. As for Google Glass, that’s not happening. Google has shelved the project, and I can understand why. It’s not very practical. As for the phone booths, they are making a comeback. (At least, where I am). They’re putting them in malls, aquariums, train stations, etc. They charge .50C now, as opposed to .25.

And I totally agree with your point on phone booths, James. What if you lose your cell phone, and there’s nothing else around? What if you don’t even have a cell phone? You need something in case of emergency. At least keep it around for the tourists, like they do in Singapore. As for the self-lacing shoes… I won’t touch on that, other than to say that Mike Fox’s pair came with a really cool letter, complete w/sketch! Doc would have been proud.
