Getting better with the unscripted format 🙂 can’t wait for the next video!
October 4, 2015 at 9:52 am
It isn’t just you, and the comments for “The Ring” show that to be true.
I would also disagree with the above poster that they’ve improved with this unscripted video. If anything, it’s more frustrating to watch. And so, I’m not going to watch them anymore.
I’ll avoid saying anything about the content of the site more generally. But this video in particular is, again, not good. The concept of an unscripted video is, presumably, that the conversation allows you to explore any number of different topics. Like for example, the actress Mike misidentified and how she… what? We don’t hear that (plot) point, if it even was one, because Mike’s mind trailed off. They both talk about how the movie doesn’t have a monster but it’s certainly a horror movie. That seems like a perfect opportunity to speak on why, and what makes it a horror movie – but no, nothing on that subject either.
I also think they both have trouble imagining their audience in these unscripted videos. Why engage, for example, in a debate about whether or not they would survive when the presumption is that not all the viewers of this video have seen the movie? You might talk maybe about the hopelessness of survival and how that ties into the horror film as a genre, and how those aspects bring this film in proximity. But telling us to “think about it,” and giving us possible scenarios for escape, especially in a movie you’re presuming others haven’t seen, is simply another bad conversation, and another example of the both of you failing to recognize your audience.
It really sucks that, so far, the thing that offered the most work in these videos was the 3D printer and designer.
October 6, 2015 at 2:53 am
I have said in Ring review and I am saying it again. I have no beef with him but the problem is MIKE , and him being in front of the cam . That’s all . He is ill equipped to be in a “unscripted” video ( in every sense if you ask me)
October 4, 2015 at 11:52 am
You and Tizzad both made some extremely apt comments. I registered just to support you, because I have been following James since the NES Nerd days(as you have too I imagine) and you’re speaking my mind better than I could.
One comment I wanted to make also. It’s something I’ve kind of picked up on in the past, but in the Ring review it really jumped out at me. Does it seem like Mike is very timid about voicing any kind of strong opposing viewpoint to James? He seemed very excited about the Ring in the beginning of the video, and it seemed like he was going to defend it. By the end, when he was agreeing “Yeah, yeah, it was just okay,” he looked very disappointed, almost browbeaten. His whole demeanor seemed to change a bit. Maybe it’s just me, but it seemed obvious to the point of almost surprising me.
October 6, 2015 at 10:35 pm
Yeah, I agree. Also, when Mike talked about the horse scene and said he found it very unsettling, it seemed to me like he was recalling scenes from the movie and kind of shuddering, perhaps feeling the shivers, yet he soon completely flipped his tone to the “meh, it was ok” camp.
Perhaps I’m just imagining it, but it seemed really out of character for Mike. He’s usually the loudmouth in these.
October 4, 2015 at 12:09 pm
How can you “miss” something that isn’t gone? Did you forget to watch the last two videos? They haven’t replaced the old format with this one. They obviously were planning to put out a review every other day or something this year, but decided to fill in the days with videos that take less time to make. Keep in mind, the man has a kid know. He doesn’t have time to put out 31 flawless, scripted videos every october.
October 4, 2015 at 12:14 pm
Stop bitching. All of the content has been filmed already. Get used to it or just sit this one out.
October 4, 2015 at 12:26 pm
I’m with Elvirus on this. But it’s true that “bitching” about it probably won’t help. The only thing that will discourage the lazy filmmaking will be to not buy these videos if they are released, and to not watch them, which will limit advertising revenue.
October 4, 2015 at 5:07 pm
You don’t have to keep explaining yourself. Intelligent people get your point. There will always be the crybabies who think every comment needs to be a brown-nosing competition. Fuck them.
October 4, 2015 at 11:33 pm
I love monster madness, been a fan since it started, what with the scripted reviews that were very fun and entertaining to watch. I have no problem with unscripted videos of let’s plays or funny videos, but I feel it does not work too well with monster madness. No offense to Mike and James I think they are both Great! But the last two reviews were great, nice and scripted. That is why sequel-a-thon 2 and monster madness 8 are my favorite years.
October 4, 2015 at 11:39 pm
I also have the same problem with this format, but I haven’t said anything yet, because I figured, maybe James didn’t have the time to make 31 “full” reviews.
So hopefully they do it correctly next year.
I wouldn’t mind if Mike wants to script and/or voice-over a few reviews, but yes, it has to be the scripted format 🙂

I’m not surprised. I haven’t seen anyone post as many comments in a row as you.

October 4, 2015 at 3:50 am
Read the plot synopsis on wikipedia and I think this could be worth a watch with some friends.
The issue I have with it though is the one James brought up about “would they survive”. While Mike made a good point about weather, you have to keep in mind that this is just a weekend. I feel like with the combination of their winter clothing, the sun and their own heat they could have just huddled into a warm yet miserable mass for a couple days.
October 4, 2015 at 5:00 am
I just watched the film based on there recommendation, it turns out it was a whole week in the movie and not just a weekend. They where incorrect. They got stuck on Sunday and the movie mentioned it would stay closed until Friday. The movie even made a joke that the girl would have to hold her pee for a whole week because she didn’t want to pee in front of the guys. lol
October 4, 2015 at 3:57 am
Movies that are in pretty much one location that I like:
1) The Thing (1982)
2) Assault On Precinct 13 (1976, not the remake!)
4) Phone Booth
5) Reservoir Dogs
7) Locke (2013, with Tom Hardy)
8) The Evil Dead (1981)
9) Der Untergang
10) The Divide
11) From Dusk Till Dawn
October 4, 2015 at 9:02 am
Clerks is also pretty much just on that one street.
October 4, 2015 at 4:00 am
You guys are the NEW SISKO AND EBERT 4EVER!
October 4, 2015 at 4:19 am
The wolf almost tore the actors head off in real life. Look it up.
October 4, 2015 at 4:20 am
I had more to say including where you could find this information but my comment was deleted 3 times and I’m just not typing all that again. Thanks guys.
October 4, 2015 at 4:21 am
Sounds like ”
October 4, 2015 at 4:36 am
Regarding the tying clothes into a rope thing: if it wasn’t long enough to reach the ground, then once they got down they’d be naked with no way to get their clothes back. Then again, if they’re on a ski lift, there’s probably shelter nearby that they could break into before freezing to death, right?
James I know you read these comments and I was wondering if you would ever do a tv monster madness month? I would love to hear your opinions on the Simpsons treehouse of horrors episodes or the roseanne Halloween specials, also I do t know if you’ve ever seen the movie pin but it’s a weird psychological horror movie that deserves more recognition than what it gets. By the way wasn’t a big fan of frozen. A co- worker said it was one of the scariest movies she’s ever seen-she was wrong.
October 4, 2015 at 5:13 am
How can she be wrong about her own opinion? Just because you didn’t agree with her opinion doesn’t make it “wrong.” It’s called subjectivity.
October 4, 2015 at 4:50 am
Tomorrow review the other horror movie called frozen. please.
October 4, 2015 at 5:14 am
Did a better job staying on topic this time around…but I still much prefer the “traditional” Monster Madness format.
October 4, 2015 at 5:17 am
This was a really good movie, I remember picking it up because Adam Green directed it. It sucks trying to explain it to people without them immediately thinking of the Disney movie though. It’s like when I try to tell people The Raven (2006) by Ulli Lommel is the worst movie ever (hint for possible review..?) and they immediately think of the one with John Cusack 6 years later.
October 4, 2015 at 5:56 am
Emma Bell, not Emma Stone, Mike.
October 4, 2015 at 6:21 am
I’m confused about these impromptu reviews because it seems like you didn’t watch them recently; you’re just recalling it from watching them awhile back. For example, I saw this movie back when it came out in 2010, and you recounted it about as well as I remember too. Are you actually watching these movies recently and reviewing them?
October 4, 2015 at 9:11 am
It’s 31 movies! Don’t you think it gets a little tough to find spare time to RE-watch that many. Especially with a kid.
October 4, 2015 at 6:10 pm
James. They will never understand what life is like with your own child. A literal 24/7 job. They expect you to leave it all up to your wife to raise your child and fill their lives with what they need. Keep doing your thing brother. I have a son who is 1 year 10 months old. They can never understand until they have one of their own, then they’d stop bitching. Your stuff is free, so they really have no reason to complain. No one is forcing you to do these videos and you could literally stop at any time. I’m glad you havnt and have chosen to keep going despite all these negative remarks. What a great admirable man you are James.
October 4, 2015 at 6:17 pm
To add, even If all your “fans” bitch and complain about your FREE OF CHARGE site that you have given us more than we could ever ask for from the old nes games we rented from the blockbuster, the board games we played with friends and family, the bullshit that is bullshit, seeing 2 friends sit and play video games together like old times getting off topic with conversation which is so true to anyone who ever played a video game with a friend, a time consuming movie, and Monster Madness, I will always be appreciative for it all up until the inevitable end someday. Love it all.
October 8, 2015 at 9:09 am
I forgot I had written this comment and I definitely didn’t expect a reply. Sorry, I didn’t mean to cause a shitstorm, I was just wondering whether you had watched them recently or not.
October 8, 2015 at 9:11 am
I feel bad, because I always feel like I’m the one who’s defending you to others too. Oh well.
October 4, 2015 at 6:33 am
Had to post this :
October 4, 2015 at 6:36 am
I almost had a heart attack when I saw the title. What happened to Monster Madness? What a relief when it turned out to be the horror movie.
October 4, 2015 at 8:12 am
Jeez I love monster madness, keep it up James and Mike! One of my favorite times of year is here 😀
October 4, 2015 at 8:41 am
It’s funny, I ADORE minimalism and films that take place in one location but I thought this movie was complete SHIT.
October 4, 2015 at 8:51 am
I wonder what would happen if I started telling my friends about this one. Cause everybody I know has seen the Disney movie
October 4, 2015 at 9:08 am
Hi guys, great review! There’s also a 2005 british thriller called Frozen!! 🙂
October 4, 2015 at 9:28 am
this is cool man, it feels more personal with you too doin the reviews this way love it guys 🙂
It wouldnt be halloween anymore with out Monster Madness, ok it still would but ya just add to it thx brotha.
October 4, 2015 at 10:37 am
“yeah, uh huh, yeah, yeah, uh huh”
I’m glad you finally were able to get out what you wanted to say about this movie.
October 4, 2015 at 10:38 am
Interesting concept, but how this is a horror movie? It sounds more like a disaster/survival movie.
October 4, 2015 at 11:07 am
This one was a pretty good movie. “The” Frozen was pretty good as well. Nice plot twist at the end.
October 4, 2015 at 11:13 am
Mike, are you guys going to put a Monster Madness t-shirt for sale in the store?
October 4, 2015 at 11:33 am
And by the way, that wasn’t Emma Stone from Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2. However, the lead guy was Shawn Ashmore, who, ironically, played Iceman in the X-Men movies.
October 4, 2015 at 11:35 am
This time around the talk was way better for this format. I think they should just say fuck it, put up a big *SPOILER* alert warning and just talk about the movies endings and such. It would make this format that much more entertaining to hear their opinions and such. Maybe something to take into account for next year?
Anyways still loved it, never even heard of this movie before lol. Your hardwork is always appreciated James and Mike!
October 4, 2015 at 11:59 am
What is the theme for this year? Movies The Hosts Barely Remember?
October 4, 2015 at 12:19 pm
I thought Monster Madness was supposed to be about Monster Movies. That’s what I tune in to see. I wouldn’t even classify Frozen as a horror movie much less a monster movie. I was hoping you’d get to some part where a Sasquatch shows up and eats someone, but that didn’t happen. There’s a whole lot of monster movies out there that you haven’t touched on. You mentioned Hatchet, I think that would be more appropriate for Monster Madness. I think if you aren’t going to focus on Monster Movies anymore you should rename the series.
October 4, 2015 at 1:02 pm
james and mike please talkabout monster brawl!
October 4, 2015 at 1:28 pm
i am soo tired of everybody complaining about the formats of monster madness its fuckin retarded they do what they do either you love it or hate it me i have been watching since the beginning whether it be james standalone or with mike it does not matter its still good content if you are complaining saying that they are not putting alot of time into it not being scripted ur dead wrong what you people have to understand is they are people just like us and have families so just be glad you are getting anything and stop being soo ungrateful fuck the haters sometimes you have to experiment to make things better thats why i have respect for these guys they take risks don’t let these assholes bring you down guys keep on rockin great work
October 4, 2015 at 6:19 pm
Your argument is probably worst than your grammar. Most of the people are just giving their honest opinion and critiquing the quality of the video. Quality over quantity anyone..? James even said numerous times in the J&MM videos that he is not well with spontaneity in review type videos and it shows. Also, I really hate the ‘it’s free’ and ‘they have families’ arguments because this is pretty much their jobs and they obviously need a fan-base. I, for one, will not blindly praise any video Cinemassacre puts out just because I am a big fan. I believe fans of classic MM enjoy the structure and informative approach of those reviews which overlay with video. If The Ring was done in the traditional format then I would feel comfortable to tell a fan of the movie, “Hey, James from Cinemassacre reviewed that, his Monster Madness series is awesome.” Unfortunately, I can’t do that with this open format because it is not a review and just not wholly enjoyable. It is literally a ‘Let’s Talk’ if that is even a thing nowadays. Also, you said sometimes you have to experiment to make things better…uh..didn’t work..sorry. Don’t worry though, I used to be a blind fanboy too. Ha.
October 4, 2015 at 8:27 pm
your just an ass oh wait did i spell that wrong ASS!!! no i don’t think i did you say most people are giving their honest opinion that’s fine but when your disrespectful about it that’s different and you say that people are critiquing the quality of the video when ya’ll aren’t critiquing shit they decide on what they wanna do and they do have families and a life outside of the web and they don’t have to do any of these videos they do it because its something they love to do you say they need a fanbase but in reality they can get a regular 9-5 if they wanted but you are to ignorant to see that
October 4, 2015 at 11:48 pm
You are very enlightening and articulate. Thank you.
October 4, 2015 at 1:37 pm
The biggest problem with these unscripted “reviews” is we miss the really cool insights you get on the scripted ones. If you want to do the unscripted, it shouldn’t be the whole thing as unscripted. You should splice in clips from the movies, a few scripted items that compliment the unscripted parts. Stuff like Half In The Bag does.
October 4, 2015 at 1:47 pm
I like the videos. Id like to see more avgn but hey, they’ve already done a lot of games and covered most of the nes library plus a lot of snes and a whole slew of other stuff. At some point you have to slow down or you will run out of games. If they kept up the pace of the previous years you might see an end to avgn. I like the new format mm videos as much as the old ones there are always a few good laughs and good points on each video which is why I watch them. Keep up the good work.
October 7, 2015 at 7:33 pm
I’ve never really bought this argument to be honest. Once the NES library has been exhausted he could move on to the SNES and Genesis libraries and then on to the N64/PS1/Saturn generation. There are still plenty of lousy games in those categories and even at a faster pace than the one at which he is moving now by the time he got to them, they would qualify as retro too. (This makes me feel way too old but really, they already are retro. The PS1 is just about twenty years old now.)
October 4, 2015 at 1:49 pm
This time, the format works way better for me. Thanks for introducing me to that movie, I´ll check it out someday!
October 4, 2015 at 2:11 pm
you know what is really funny there is so many variations to movies with frozen in the title this movie frozen made in (2010) then you have another movie called the frozen made in (2012)where there like stranded in a winter forest where some hunter stalks them and of course the disney movie frozen (2013) all only a year or couple years apart
October 4, 2015 at 4:02 pm
😀 Looks like i was Frozen today!
October 4, 2015 at 4:36 pm
I saw a movie called “wind chill” that was pretty creepy. I think I may have seen part of this one but fell asleep shortly after starting it. I recently watched a movie called “May ” kind of like a Frankenstein movie it’s a few years old but it’s good.
October 4, 2015 at 4:49 pm
Loving the unscripted stuff, guys! These are great.
October 4, 2015 at 5:48 pm
Hi James and Mike, you guys should watch the original french version :p
Keep doing great job, love you guys!
October 4, 2015 at 6:32 pm
“Ah yes, Hatchet. That’s the one with the guy with the axe right?”
October 4, 2015 at 7:20 pm
The movie sounds awful. What’s next, stuck in a gas station rest room for a weekendL without toilet paper!!!??
October 4, 2015 at 11:36 pm
stealing your spot here, its not the girl from the amazing spiderman, your thinking that because her name is Emma, Emma Bell, where in spiderman its Emma Stone. usually people get faces mixed up, you got the names mixed up lol. good review.
October 5, 2015 at 3:00 am
Oh yeah, I remember seeing the trailer for this Frozen, the horror film, in theaters. It looked like an interesting concept. Good thing you guys covered it, or else I would’ve forgotten about it
October 5, 2015 at 3:39 am
So it looks to me that this film does for being trapped on a ski lift that “Open Water” did for being abandoned in an ocean surrounded by sharks.
October 5, 2015 at 1:31 pm
They’re easier to distinguish for us in Latin America because the 2010 one is called “Congelados” and the 2013 one is “Frozen: Una Aventura Congelada”.
October 5, 2015 at 5:30 pm
Top 10 Best horror Scream, ;D
October 5, 2015 at 6:31 pm
Glad you did this. Saw this movie back in 2010 and quite liked it. Most people haven’t seen it, which is a shame. It’s pretty underrated.
Also, in response to Mike’s point about why they didn’t tie their clothes together and climb down. I’m guessing because they would be way to cold to be able to tie things together properly if they started taking their clothes off. Their muscles also might be too cold to be able to climb down properly. When you get that cold, your muscles don’t respond properly.
October 5, 2015 at 8:51 pm
Totally digging the unscripted James and Mike shooting the shit videos. I love the mix, somthing different once in a while. People complaining are spaz nerds and just retahted.
October 6, 2015 at 12:16 am
I think I remember seeing part of this movie. Like the girls hands freeze to the pole or something and it pulls her skin off?
But, to the point what sky-resort closes on the weekend?
October 7, 2015 at 3:21 am
This is something I have not understood either. Isn’t that the best time to keep the place open?
October 6, 2015 at 4:18 am
I just watched this movie based off the review, and I enjoyed it. It has some pretty intense moments in it. Definitely a good movie if you are into the survival type horror movies.
October 6, 2015 at 2:00 pm
THANKS FOR THE SPOILERS MIKE, YOU DUMB DICK. telling us they die at the end, WTF is up with that?? deserve a face smack 4 that 1.
October 7, 2015 at 3:20 am
Not that I know for sure, but I think it’s totally impossible for this kind of thing to ever happen. When the ski lifts are shut down the operators use radios (mobile phones nowadays probably) to check the number of a seat going up. The other operator at the up would wait until he sees the ski lift with that number on wouldn’t stop the lift until he sees it. I haven’t seen the movie so perhaps there is a way they make it happen, but to me it seems so impossible that the plot is mainly just bizarre. About being in a ski lift for a weekend: The people would definitely die. Not just from the cold, but also they wouldn’t have any food or water with them. Downhill skiing clothes are quite heavy and not very mobile so climbing and moving while clothed would probably not be that easy. Especially when wearing ski shoes and gloves etc.
Also I think undressing is not a very good idea. The ones that are naked would probably die in less then 10 minutes.
October 7, 2015 at 3:28 am
But I got to add that being stuck in a ski lift is a terrible feeling. It is not very uncommon for a lift to stop for a minute or two (or even 10 minutes if there is something really bad happened to the ski lift) and when it happens it makes you think that you’d die there. Although eventually you won’t.
October 7, 2015 at 4:43 pm
I just saw this one. It was actually at the public library. This was a much better film than I thought it would be. The acting carries the film, which is well written with characters that are, as James and Mike aptly point out, a mix of likable and annoying. In short, they are believable.
October 8, 2015 at 6:36 pm
Now Mike weaseld his way into Monster Madness? Hell no!!
October 2, 2017 at 8:52 pm
Adam Green and Kane Hodder are awesome, I met them at London Frightfest this year.
