I have been looking forward to Monster Madness since last year. Great stuff guys, keep it up!

    October 1, 2015 at 8:26 am

Very excited for monster madness, but this is a controversial review to start things off with. IMHO, The Ring had the most effective “boo!” moment of all time. Of all time!

    • Elwin Rijken

      October 1, 2015 at 12:48 pm

Closet right? Yeah I was hoping for them to talk about that. But I think because the approach is so unscripted it can leave the expected stuff out. It could well be that after the recordings they slapped their faces and yelled at eachother, we forgot the closet scene! hehe

      • GeNoMe

        October 2, 2015 at 4:30 am

I’m not sure yet if i’m gonna dig the unscripted approach because of this happening. I would have loved if they had mentioned the closet scene. Can’t wait for the next video’s tot pop up! You all have a great October!! πŸ˜€

      • October 3, 2015 at 7:21 am

Not the closet. The “girl comes out of the TV” amd basically scares the guy who crashes into a big metal shelf. It’s a GREAT “boo” moment, and I agree, James and Mike should have given it more attention. Kinda surprises at their “meh” response to the movie, which is one of the best horror films of the past 15 years, if you ask me. Glad they reviewed it at least, though.

      • Strider Tien

        October 21, 2015 at 7:39 pm

I gotta disagree. If anything, I almost feel they give this movie too much credit. I’ll admit that it maintained an eerie atmosphere but that’s about all it did. The plot was better conceived in the original Ringu although the western release was more pleasing asthetically. All it all though, I found the film entirely forgettable.

    October 1, 2015 at 8:28 am

This is going to be an interesting approach to spice things up for this year’s Monster Madness. I hope that when it’s all over everything will be all in one place (either have it all here or have it all on Youtube). I make it a tradition to rewatch previous Monster Madness videos every year in anticipation for the new ones, and it’d be slightly inconvenient if I had to switch between the Cinemassacre website and Youtube channel to watch it all in years to come.

    • October 1, 2015 at 11:15 am

If you watch them all on Cinemassacre, you will see them all. Same as always.

        October 1, 2015 at 1:29 pm

I like this as an intro to the month of Monster Madness and I am excited to see your usual format, but I have never been a fan of you and Mike just talking to one another. I’m sorry. It’s boring to me. You haven’t lost me yet. I look forward to Monster Madness every year!

    • Don Skiver

      October 1, 2015 at 7:31 pm

I’m a big fan of the saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Monster Madness, the way it had been protrayed in years past with the extremely informative voice over and the clips from the movies, it was damn near perfect in my opinion, and I think other people will agree.

This “unscripted” nonsense you guys keep trying to force on us…sigh…it doesn’t work for everything. Least of which movie reviews. I know it’s too late now for this year, all the videos are already done, but for next year, if you guys aren’t willing to give up this “unscripted” crap, please have an outline at least so you guys can stay on topic. Over 1/4th of this video was spent talking about unrelated stuff. Spending 2 1/2 minutes bullshitting around would be less of a big deal if your video was half an hour long. But it’s not. It’s only a few minutes. In my humble opinion, if you want to give Mike a chance, why didn’t you assign him half of the movies to watch and review and do the voice over for? That would have been much more entertaining to watch than this unscripted effortless crap.

I’m really sorry that I’m coming down so hard on you guys over this…but I really needed to give you my honest opinion before all the sycophants come out and tell you how you can never make a mistake…

      • tacotuesday815

        October 1, 2015 at 10:43 pm

I agree. It’s not that Mike is in this that makes me dislike this format, it’s that it’s unscripted which just results in a rambling discussion, a lot of which has nothing to do with the topic at hand. These videos are already so short without the off-topic small talk. At least before there was depth to what was being said, not just a casual conversation where two friends are trying to remember what happens in a movie.

      • Jeff R

        October 2, 2015 at 12:50 am

I completely agree. Unscripted is fine and all at times, but if theres no direction or talking points it comes off as a mess. I’d rather have 10 well thought out and in depth episodes of monster madness then 30 episodes thrown together.

      • zoopsat

        October 2, 2015 at 7:23 pm

agree. I mean I don’t want to be a dick but the old format I liked much more. I want to see the movie clips and hear them talking. It’s fine if just mike or even both of them do it but the old format was more pleasing to the eye and had a much more perfessional look to it.

      • October 4, 2015 at 6:23 pm

Couldn’t of said it better mself

  • andrewcounty

    October 1, 2015 at 8:32 am

I always said that The Ring is pretty good for a movie about a VHS tape that kills people. Overall I have to agree with the review that it’s ok.

  • Cilliandrew

    October 1, 2015 at 8:38 am

I think this is one of those movies that you had to see in a Darkened Theatre to really get the full effect. I do agree that for the most part it is okay/decent, but the climax when the girl crawls out of the tv……In the theatre that absolutely blew you out of your seat! I have rarely experienced a sensation like the one that generated. You felt like you couldn’t crawl far enough back in your seat!

    • Frein

      October 6, 2015 at 10:09 pm

I agree with this. The Ring was easily the scariest movie I had seen until then, and in fact it’s probably the only actually scary movie I had seen by then, as traditional Western horror never did it for me.

I remember sitting in the theater and this girl next to me was absolutely freaking out for almost the whole duration of the movie. She couldn’t stop swearing to herself and I thought she might faint at any moment. πŸ˜€

  • October 1, 2015 at 9:04 am

Eh, not exactly sold on this format yet for Monster Madness, but love the set and we’ll see where things go. Still, looking forward to the scripted reviews and having Mike around should be pretty cool for some additional opinions about the films.

    October 1, 2015 at 9:14 am

October truly is the best time of the year. Hello Monster Madness my old friend.

The Grudge is the scarier movie if you ask me

  • datdoe

    October 1, 2015 at 9:24 am

Looking forward to all the reviews! Awesome, I love the ring, I’m one of the people who think it is really scary hah. I like the scripted format with video footage better for the reviews.

  • October 1, 2015 at 9:24 am

I feel pretty similar to James. I liked the movie, but it had been built up as the scariest movie ever by a lot of my friends, so when I actually saw it I was underwhelmed. I actually like Ringu (the Japanese original) more. It’s creepier in my opinion.

Also, I like the format of this review/discussion. I think maybe a little more preparation could’ve been done for the abrupt ending, but I like it.

  • October 1, 2015 at 9:49 am

This format is new! looks interesting, Happy October.

  • October 1, 2015 at 10:02 am

they mentioned Night of the Demon!! it’s one of my favorites

  • October 1, 2015 at 10:16 am

This was the film that introduced me to Horror movies.

My Dad rented it on Sky BoxOffice UK , I was 5 Years old at the time and I was left scared shitless.

For me it is one of the most scariest movies I’ve ever seen because really there’s not a lot of films that are actually scary. Especially to hardcore horror fans. At best it’s the gore that can make your gut turn.

But with this film it made me scared to be alone with the TV which sounds ridiculous but it’s true!

I’m very excited for this years Monster Madness! So much so that I had to re-watch a few classic episodes. However I’m personally looking more forward to the scripted reviews, James!

  • h8makingnames

    October 1, 2015 at 10:21 am

I have to agree with James on the US version being better than the Japanese version. The Japanese version has more cryptic WTF images in the video, but the death faces in the US version are more creepy. Ju-On scared me more, though.

  • Jack Brotherton

    October 1, 2015 at 10:33 am

Monster madness has always been something I look forward to every year. I’m a little disappointed with the format this year, however. While I’ve enjoyed the inclusion of Mike’s opinions alongside James in the “James and Mike Monday’s” video game reviews, I was looking forward to seeing the traditional format for Monster Madness in which James reviews a movie, we see clips of said movie, and James gives his personal opinion of the content. The format of monster madness of past years really got me interested in different horror movies, so it’s a shame to me that the format was changed this year.

    • October 1, 2015 at 10:41 am

At 1:50 He said some of the videos are gonna be like the originals and some are gonna be like the new format.

      • October 1, 2015 at 8:55 pm

They’ve changed a tradition and you honestly expect people to not complain.

  • October 1, 2015 at 10:35 am

When I think of this movie I think of the somewhat annoying trend in horror movies this movie started with its Ice Blue color tone throughout.

So happy MM is finally back

  • Alejandro Delgado

    October 1, 2015 at 10:37 am

Wow I never noticed James had a tattoo…

  • October 1, 2015 at 10:39 am

The new format is cool. It reminds me of those Horror movie marathons on TV. Before the film, the host or hosts in the case, talk about their feelings on the movie. I like the unscripted element because it’s more natural. Only thing I would change is instead of just pictures show some clips of the movie. Also for next time (I know you’re on a budget) a bigger set where you can walk around and interact with it. Sort of like Monstervision. That would be dope. Still It’s MM so it’s gonna be awesome.

    October 1, 2015 at 10:42 am

Been waiting for this πŸ™‚ My favorite thing from James is monster madness πŸ™‚ Thou i dont like this format :/ Du no like old format better.

  • October 1, 2015 at 10:43 am

In the beginning of the video he says he made some in the original format and some in the new.

  • Atarithx

    October 1, 2015 at 10:45 am

I like monster madness but I prefer the old approach of it

  • Daniel Fonseca

    October 1, 2015 at 11:06 am

I don’t like this format at all to be honest. I like it better like the old monster madness, with the movie clips and James talking over it. But, hey, you do this for free, so who am I to complain?

      October 1, 2015 at 11:50 am

I think they knew their fans would hate this but it’s “easier”

  • Morris Wex

    October 1, 2015 at 11:21 am

    Where can I buy a Cinemassacre’s Monster Madness T-shirt?

  • October 1, 2015 at 11:25 am

Love the new format. Can’t wait for the rest of October!!

Thanks again guys for all the awesome content.

  • October 1, 2015 at 11:27 am

I’m glad that Monster Madness is here. Unfortunately i’m not really sold on this new format. Not really liking it. It seems a bit too spur of the moment. I kind of like the more collected, scripted reviews better. However, i’ll give this new format a try and see how it works.

  • October 1, 2015 at 11:29 am

Hmm I think I dig the old scripted format with footage of the film a lot better so I’m glad you’re doing a mix of styles this year instead of just jumping to this. I understand that those videos are a ton of work though so I’m glad you found a way to add some episodes while relieving a bit of the stress of writing, recording, editing.

  • culwin

    October 1, 2015 at 11:34 am

This format made me so angry, I drove my car into a tree and I don’t even care.

  • Valtteri Saarikko

    October 1, 2015 at 11:44 am

Don’t really like this one all that much, the movie is pretty boring, mostly due to incredibly slow pacing (i actually fell asleep watching this) and uninteresting plot and plus it wasn’t all that scary for me either, this is probably one of those movies that probably played better in theaters than just watching it at home.

  • PhantomExdeath

    October 1, 2015 at 11:45 am

Yesss been waiting for MM all year! This new style is fun, but I hope they get some movies that both James and Mike can get excited talking about. The Ring is very meh overall and without spoiling it, they really cant talk much about the ending since that’s the only really interesting part.

  • October 1, 2015 at 11:49 am

To be honest, I really like the scripted videos a lot more. They always get me right in the mood to start watching them and get my spook on for halloween. I don’t mind that Mike is there, but I wish it was more scripted and was just the clips that we saw.

  • Ian Butler

    October 1, 2015 at 11:55 am

You Know What’s Bullshit!? The new MM concept.

Hope the real MM will return next year. This year, there is no MM for me.

    • October 1, 2015 at 12:56 pm

It’s called criticism. That’s what everything James does is criticize either games, or movies, or random things.

  • October 1, 2015 at 12:14 pm

Is this how it’s going to be for every review this year?

  • jasonjrf

    October 1, 2015 at 12:21 pm

It’s On like Donkey Kong Muthafuckas Monster Madness Fucking A. Is it sad this is the Highlight of my year??

  • October 1, 2015 at 12:34 pm

Before you die, you have to see the Ring!

That’s what everyone was saying back in 2002. This is my favorite horror movie and I love everything about it.

I can see why some don’t like it, though. It’s not for people who love gore or hate puzzles.

I’ve seen all the Ringu movies too. The original wasn’t as good, for a specific reason. In the original Ringu, they showed their hand too soon. The ghost girl has be ability to create images, and the implication is that she is putting images into your eyes that are so scary, you die of fright.

In the original Ringu, they show a flashback showing that the girl had the ability to kill like that when she was alive. I think that shows too much. It’s more fun to be left in the dark and put it together yourself.

  • October 1, 2015 at 12:48 pm

October is finally here and with it the return of Monster Madness. I look forward to these every year now!

  • Jackred89

    October 1, 2015 at 12:51 pm

I get you are doing these unscripted. But what exactly is the theme of this year of Monster Madness?

    • October 1, 2015 at 1:55 pm

This year’s theme is Viewer’s Choice. James set up a poll last year asking what he should cover.

      • Jackred89

        October 1, 2015 at 2:16 pm

I took part in that but is he really doing the most requested ones? If so this is going to be an great Monster Madness.

  • Herbman420

    October 1, 2015 at 12:55 pm

I don’t really mind the new format all that much. I like the addition of mother fucker mike and the spooky decor. I just wish that they threw in some actual clips from the movie rather than boring images. Still excited none the less! Looking forward to the rest of em.

  • S3ntinel2001

    October 1, 2015 at 1:09 pm

Finally the best time of the year, i am really going to like this new format not that there was anything wrong with the previous years.. and like the addition of mike being on it.

  • October 1, 2015 at 1:12 pm

This and Hellsing abridged are the reasons i love October

  • October 1, 2015 at 1:31 pm

I never noticed your tattoo James. Very cool.

    • October 1, 2015 at 1:41 pm

Also i get why you are using this new format but i have to agree with a lot of the other people here, i loved your old format better! I want the clips of the movie you are running with your commentary over it back!!!

      • October 1, 2015 at 1:51 pm

Legend has it, only about a 3rd of the reviews will use this format. I agree, though. I understand why they would choose this route. Its a much simpler production all around. For MM, it’s kind of unexplored territory. Still, I turned it off as soon as I found it was an unscripted discussion. It’s just not interesting to watch. But it allowed them to get an episode knocked out, and back to more pressing issues.

  • Josh Beerchief

    October 1, 2015 at 1:40 pm

Hey mike, you say you’ve never seen a horse do that shit. Haven’t you seen Braveheart? They kill tons of horses in that movie.
    And quite frankly, good.

  • Sebastian Nordlund

    October 1, 2015 at 1:49 pm

I have now read all the comments that has been written this far and I see a lot of criticism on the new format. And I kinda agree. But then i thought about it for a while and realized that it’s not the format that is less entertaining, it’s the “performance”.

The concept could work if there was a little preparation beforehand. Because now it’s kinda jumpy from point to another, from a subject to another and so forth. It works with the Mike and James Mondays videos; it’s a couple of guys sitting on a sofa, talking about a game they are playing. It’s how friends talk to each other off camera. But the MM has a set built up and everything, it doesn’t work the same way.

I think that James and Mike aren’t good co-hosts when unprepared, nobody is! They don’t give each other enough room, they don’t communicate with each other on a level that would be desired from the audiences point of view.

For example when James sticks in a couple of “Yeah!”‘s when Mike is talking, and Mike can suddenly interrupt James and start talking about an completely different thing, but still within the subject of the game or the movie they are reviewing. It’s hard to follow as a viewer.

And also, both James and Mike have very different things they want to say, but they don’t use that to their advantage. James is more like the type that want’s to tell about the movie, backgrounds, facts, trivia. And Mike on the other hand likes to tell about his personal experience.

So to conclude this long message that I have written with warmth from my heart, I want to tell you my concrete wish for the future of this concept in MM: Pick a topic and talk that one out then maybe cut and start the camera rolling again on another topic. Maybe talk beforehand what you want to say, and have a signal for each other when you are finished with what you want to say, so that you don’t interrupt each other. And finally, nice to see MM again after a years wait! I don’t watch horror movies but I do watch MM. I love Monster Madness!

  • Johan Γ–berg

    October 1, 2015 at 1:52 pm

I think they did this to avoid the copyright shenanigans over on Youtube. Too bad because the regular style is a lot better in my opinion, but I understand why they did it.

    • simms1

      October 1, 2015 at 2:54 pm

Why are they trying to separate the videos between Youtube and Cinemassacre anyway? They’ve done public domain stuff on the site before so it’s kind of weird to be switching back and forth.

For the change in format, I can maybe see that they spent time doing longer reviews for the site and possibly full length commentaries for public domain movies (and then put them on Youtube) and that could mean they just threw some quick reviews in between to fill up the days.

  • October 1, 2015 at 1:55 pm

As a fan of James and Mike Mondays, I could get used to this format for Monster Madness, I’ve enjoyed the previous years and this could be an interesting year. A bit of people have criticized this format maybe because of Mike’s humor but everyone has different opinions but I’m happy to see Mike get involved in Monster Madness and am excited for what’s to come.

I look forward to MM every year. It’s a huge highlight for my favorite month. I’m another fan who is disappointed by this new format, and i’m VERY glad that all the videos won’t be this way. This just felt like the same old shit to me, like another version of JMM (which I like, by the way, but still). This felt less like a celebration of monster movies and more like a quick video to put up during a Nerd down time. Very disappointed.

  • October 1, 2015 at 3:08 pm

In fact the books are investigatives. I strongly recommend the books because they are much better than any movie i’ve seen of the saga. The terror of Sadako isn’t a terror from monsters or poltergeists, is the terror of knowing something that acts like a virus and is on the way of destroying the humanity. It’s a science fiction booke more than a terror book.

  • October 1, 2015 at 3:13 pm

you guys missed the best scare in the whole movie, the closet scare. it was incredibly effective and memorable. Any particular reason you didn’t mention it?

I really like how the whole movie she’s trying to solve the mystery to stop her death, to kind of make right the wrong. And then she thinks she did it at the end, and that’s when the girl comes out of the TV.

I agree that it’s not scary, but it’s definitely worth watching. it’s an interesting movie.

The actual tape is a lot like Un Chien Andalou, which I’m sure Mike and James watched in college.

  • Kent Owen

    October 1, 2015 at 6:11 pm

I would have liked to hear you guys talk about what the ring actually was. It’s kind of a cool concept. I see the ring as 2 things. Literally, the ring of light shining through the stone around the well is the ring that the girl saw before she died. But symbolically, it’s also a never ending process of them trying to make tapes and show it to someone else so that they don’t get killed. It’s like a cycle.

  • October 1, 2015 at 6:14 pm

If you had seen the ring on the big screen, you would agree that it is one of the scariest movies ever. A lot of the atmosphere comes from the audio track and what did you have back then at home? dolby digital at best… that cannot convey the atmosphere. In germany, the ring wasn’t even released on blu ray (wtf!?) so we won’t even get a better audio track than this garbage…

  • October 1, 2015 at 6:20 pm

If Rachel had popped in YOR instead of that other tape, she would still have been cursed. Samaras ghost INFECTS tapes that are popped in the VCR in the room above the well.

  • October 1, 2015 at 7:31 pm

Its the most wonderful time of the year! Love Cinemassacre! I felt the thing that freaked me out about the ring so much is what exactly it is that Samara does to you to result in the horrific death pose of Katie and Noah. Mine often never show up in the f*rst place. I’ve been told that using a certain word (which was in the sentence just before this) can cause that to happen, but even when I avoid that it happens most of the time. EXTREMELY frustrating.

October has finally arrived! I’m not sure about the format of the videos yet. I’m glad Mike is making an appearance this year and I don’t mind the improvisation, but I liked seeing bits and pieces of the scenes in the movie while you were reviewing them. But I sure as hell couldn’t do what y’all do so keep up the excellent work. Happy October!

  • October 1, 2015 at 8:28 pm

I remember reading about the original (JP) film back in the day & being quite keen on checking it out due to the concept & reputation; unfortunately, when I did, I found the film to be (while neat in concept) rather horribly dull.
I found that the American remake really fixed elements regarding the pacing, which made the whole film much more enjoyable to take in.

I found the opposite to be true for the film Dark Water, which had an awesome JP original and a shit remake.

I used to hate October because I hate winter terribly thus it always just reminded me that it was coming, even if it does have Halloween.

But for the last bazillion years it seems this has been the thing that has pushed that hate to November instead =)

    Thank you!

Guys..look, I love your honesty, but shit, youre phoning this shit in this year.

    • October 1, 2015 at 8:59 pm

Youtube is to blame. They are putting these unscripted ones up on youtube and that site does not allow any copyrighted footage to be shown. That is why there is no film footage in this review, it’s not allowed. He said something about the public domain ones so maybe those will be the ones to use the old Monster Madness format.

        October 1, 2015 at 10:03 pm

Yep. In one sense I kind of wish they made all the reviews just on cinemassacre. But the fact is a good portion of their fans only watch them on youtube, and youtube is the only way to make ad revenue with videos anymore.

        I cant blame them.

Very strange idea for the new format. I mean, it’s like you guys really had no idea what to even say about the film. Unscripted is cool but maybe you should have a few bullet points to keep everything on track.

Oy, a lot of criticism here; a lot of praise too. People, they’re experimenting…lighten up! Give these guys a break for Christ’s sake. I’ll be honest, I do prefer the format of Monster Madnesses past, but I’m more curious about what movies they’ll be commenting on rather that how they’re presented. One down…30 to go!

I always found the ring very overrated, I mean it was an Americanized version of Japanese horror and let’s face it the Japanese horror movies were vastly superior. I’m currently watching pet cement art while drunk and I have to say it’s one of the better Stephen King adaptations.

  • dansims

    October 1, 2015 at 11:04 pm

I think that it’s a good idea to watch both version, because they kind of complete the story each and other. In the japanese version it’s more clear that the girl have psychic power, and in the remake, the way of avoiding dead is much simply explain. The scene whit the horse on the boat is really impressive, and did not figure in the original.

    October 1, 2015 at 11:29 pm

This is one of those movies that gives me a creepy feeling the whole way through, which is a good compliment to a horror flick. The unscripted dialogue of the “review” is about like watching the special features of a DVD instead of watching the movie. So far I prefer the style of the previous monster madness seasons. Here is an idea, do the traditional monster madness, put it on DVD and have the discussions with Mike on the DVD. I’d buy it.

    • akronymn

      October 2, 2015 at 12:00 am

It would be more work, but James could do the traditional review on cinemassacre and release the James/Mike discussion on YouTube at the same time. The YouTube discussion could plug the review and draw more traffic to cinemassacre.

  • simms1

    October 2, 2015 at 12:04 am

It would be a good compromise if they stuck to doing the regular Monster Madness for the Cinemassacre website (maybe every other day in October to save time) and leave these unscripted videos on Youtube under a different project because they don’t have the same feel to it. If people like the content on Youtube enough they will come flocking over here to the true home of all of the Cinemassacre productions.

I was BEYOND excited for this years Monster Madness. Literally counting down the days….but then I realized Mike was part of it. Don’t get me wrong, i enjoy…enjoyed Mike’s videos when James was MIA for the Movie. But lately. H’es been putting out more and more material of just him, or him and a random friend. I know this is the 9th year of MM, and James wants to mix things up a bit,….but I visit this site….to see James…not Mike. I’m sorry if I sound like an ungrateful ass, and I do know that Mike puts a TON of work into not only his own videos, but on James’ as well…..I’m just saying that this site has been featuring Mike a lot more than it has James lately….and I was looking forward to just seeing James do what he does best…alone… I’m sorry Mike…I enjoy your videos..I value your opinions…and I admire the work you put into any video that gets uploaded… …..To much of a good thing…makes you tire of it..

  • October 2, 2015 at 12:58 am

I like the previous format better, when you actualy put some effort into it. Now it’s just depressing.

Maby you should have halfed the number of movies covered and split the work between you two to lighten the “burden” and get the traditional scripted goodness.

  • October 2, 2015 at 2:37 am

So, what you are basically saying is: Hey guys, this is something new – I’m going to be lazy about it… like with the other stuff we do these days.

Works for me – I also enjoy James and Mike Mondays.
It’s just that it all kinda turns into: hey, we are celebs, enjoy us ranting about stuff.

What’s next? You and Mike debating board games unscripted?

    • October 2, 2015 at 2:41 am

In 2002 I was in third grade and me and my class mates used to watch horror films all the time at my place, and of course completely in secret from our parents. Ring was one of the films we watched and I was absolutely terrified by it. The next night I couldn’t sleep, so I imagined telling my parents all about the films, which eventually made me feel better and fall asleep. To this day they never found out about us watching scary movies!

  • October 2, 2015 at 3:49 am

I remember watching The Ring and I was pretty disappointed. It’s a nice film, but not really that scary.
Later I saw Ringu and I think The Ring is a better movie. But I liked a lot better about the investigation they had in Ringu. I am not sure if you even can dublicate that process in a English film.
All in all I’d say The Ring is a decent film, but by far it is not the scariest film ever filmed.
For today’s audience it might be scary idea to say that you download the film online. And if you see it, then you die in 7 days. If you wouldn’t want to use a VHS tape.

  • October 2, 2015 at 6:35 am

Why are you reviewing the US-remake and not the original which is actually scary and very well made?

    • Hanglyman

      October 3, 2015 at 3:35 pm

I think someone mentioned that this year is reviews of things requested by fans. So I guess we asked for it?

  • October 2, 2015 at 6:51 am

I can understand that this movie wasn’t very scary for two horror movie buffs like you guys but for someone like me who barely watches any horror at all, this movie scared the living hell outta me. This is one of my favorite all time horror movies…I can’t stomach the gory ones or the psycho ones (like the SAW series, for example) so something like this was just perfect for me. Anyway, I’m also here to say I can’t wait for Monster Madness to get going, I look forward to this every year.

Love MM and I like that Mike is there, but as many of the fans I don’t like this new format.
It feels like a bonus feature on top of the actual MM.
Why not review a movie together, scripted.
That way at the end of the review we get two (hopefully) different opinions about why we should watch a movie.
Nice of you guys to try new things with your show, but sometimes you just don’t want or need anything fresh, you just want to go back to the past.

  • October 2, 2015 at 11:07 am

Why not also do a review on the Japanese original?
In Asia, that was probably the scariest shit we’ve seen as kids born in the 80’s.
I still remember the theater was oversold when I went there and I ended up sitting on the aisle, and it still scared the shit out of me.

  • Chris Pruitt

    October 2, 2015 at 12:27 pm

My experience seeing this in the theater was awesome. The formatting must have been screwed up because during the final climatic scene at the end, the boom mic was in the shot above the actors. The entire sequence! Kinda took the excitement down a notch.

I always thought James should talk about The Grudge in more depth. He did it briefly in his top remakes video and said it scared the crap out of him… it’s the only film that has kept me awake at night. Truly unsettling. C’mon James – do The Grudge! πŸ™‚

    • October 2, 2015 at 8:44 pm

Oh yeah I forgot he said that… yeah that makes my comment below sort of validated lol

  • Adam

    October 2, 2015 at 7:40 pm

This is why I always come back. Can you do another commentary this year for a horror movie like you did for NOTLD? That was awesome.

  • October 2, 2015 at 8:29 pm

My favorite Monster Madness series was the 80’s-a-thon, especially the one about The Stuff. I grew up mostly during the 90’s but I’m crazy about 80’s pop culture. Just wish there had been more of the 80’s-a-thon videos. I’d never even heard of The Stuff until I saw your video.

  • October 2, 2015 at 8:44 pm

In the great “The Ring/Ringu vs The Grudge/Ju-On” divide, I end up on the side of The Grudge series easily. I frankly didn’t find The Ring scary. Atmospheric and moody, well shot and edited in the Japanese and English versions for sure. But The Grudge is one of the rare horror movies that just… bothered me for months. It also introduced me to a game series called Fatal Frame, to which I am a fan of this day and based my name around. I also found Kayako more of a visceral and horrific movie monster than Sadako/Samara.

The Grudge is also one of those rare “The American version is better” movies- the acting is more on point, the make-up and special effects benefit the horror greatly and the framing story is more coherent (the Japanese original is told out of order in illogical way and for many viewers this is a negative. Pulp Fiction did it well because the stories were unconnected- Ju-On has connected stories, just told out of order).

  • October 3, 2015 at 7:11 am

It just wouldn’t be October without MONSTER MADNESS! Thanks for keeping us entertained all month long, James and Mike.

  • Tizzad

    October 3, 2015 at 11:45 am

It’s not even that I have a problem with a change to the Monster Madness formula. Over nine years, things change – that much is obvious. But this change is both annoyingly strategic, and boringly lazy.

Mike doesn’t need to be in these videos. I’m not sure what he’s like when not in front of the camera, but he has no talent whatever for improvisation. James, the same goes for you. Because of this, your off-the-cuff videos feel disjointed, scatter-brained, and, worst of all, boring. Mike didn’t contribute anything here, either. He spoke about the horse scene, that he liked the video being watched, that he agreed with James’ opinion on the movie, and… then what? He said “fuckin’ madness,” I guess?

Improv/non-scripted conversations require either very talented and knowledgeable people about a particular (or series of) subject(s), or they need a basic game plan that might act as the implicit roadmap of the conversation. The ending gives it away:

Mike: “Um, it was, uh, it was an okay movie.”
James: “… I’ve seen the original, um, I actually think this one was better because of the visuals [etc – bigger budget, yadda yadda] some like, uh, better effects and everything […] Yeah… [silence] …
    Mike: “The Ring.”
    James: “Okay-”

C’mon. So if you’re too busy, cancel Monster Madness – because that sucks, man. James left topics untouched that might have been far more coherent in a written voice-over, let alone a voice-over presented on this website wherein he might comment on particular scenes, the cinematography, or whatever. Mike said quite literally nothing at all that James didn’t say, and even if James didn’t say it, nobody cares if Mike thinks, uh, it’s, um, an okay movie. Your last words just abruptly ended the conversation like in those circumstances where there was no good conversation, and on that I think most people can agree.

If you want to do unscripted videos, do it. It’s your website. But recognize, at the very least, that when you’re not good at it – and this is as good an example as any, isn’t it? – that maybe you should just bite the bullet and do what you actually are good at. Mike is even worse at it, and so I really don’t get why he’s there. May he continue to help editing and all that good shit. But what’s the point in having him in front of the camera if his role is to agree with you?

Harsh, maybe, but I suspect you’ve both heard worse. And I’m not personally invested in either of you. I like watching these Monster Madness collections most years. But this video sucked, and it was clearly the worst video in any iteration of this project, and if you check the comments I think you’ll find many echoing that sentiment. Rethink this shit. If you’re doing it because you’re busy, or for the somewhat gross reason of getting it onto YouTube, you need to ask whether or not it’s worth doing it at all anymore.

Or maybe not. Maybe I just need to ask whether it’s worth watching – which, you know, for videos like this it’s an obvious “no.”

      October 5, 2015 at 2:50 pm

Exactly what I thought about this. I think a lot of people (including me) watch Monster Madness to find out about some yet not seen-Horrormovies. But this diffuse way of presenting a movie is simply not working for me.

The Ring / Ringu γƒͺング series is one of my favorites! You guys did a decent review. I feel that it just ended kinda abruptly towards the end there. I wish you had touched up on some importants aspects of the film, but maybe you haven’t noticed before so I’ll tell a little bit about it. The Ring is a symbolic and pretty deep film. If you were to disect the content on the cursed tape, you’d find that each image represents a different meaning that pertains to the life of Samara (or Sadako in the original) and her vision of life and her future death, how there’s a ladder which later falls down meaning no escape (from well), and how the tree then burns later which could indicate how she saw the sunset, from maggots to viral disease, spreading like a virus, the Ring Virus, that comes full circle, which what she sees looking up from within the well. It’s a film about revenge. All she wants is for people to experience what she felt – fear. By watching the cursed media and passing it along as a viral video is the efficient way to spread her work. Her victims die not of her appearance but she kills them with her eye! The Eye is a portal to the world. The eye and pupil is round shaped like a circle, a ring, the well, a ‘port hole’. One of the major differences between The Ring and Ringu is that Samara’s ghost face is shown while Sadako only shows her (left) eye which leaves much to the character’s mystery. Another factor that made the film such a hit was because it was rated PG-13 so it was more accessible. For a horror film, that’s quite a landmark for its time and region (like The Sixth Sense) where it’s usually rated-R slasher flicks (Scream series). Lastly, there was also a TV movie version from 1995 that only ever released on VHS and laserdisc in Japan called Ring: Kanzenban, which is the most faithful to the novel. Next year, 2016, there will be a reboots called RINGS, not to be mistaken with the 2005 short film Rings that linked the American Ring films, but perhaps inspired by it, backed by Guillermo del Toro! Thank you for reading. I look forward to more surprise reviews this Monster Madness!
