The reaction to the character selection choices was incredible.

  • August 10, 2015 at 4:03 am

The cartridge art is from “Doom Troopers,” based on the Mutant Chronicles franchise, an SNES release.

Thank you!!! I knew I had seen it somewhere. It was driving me nuts!

  • August 10, 2015 at 4:04 am

What a crazy combo of characters. PS my mom’s maiden name is Rolfe, and I would probably shit my pants if there was any relation…but i doubt it =( Any relatives that you know of that live in upstate NY?

    Some tips:
When in-game you enter the character select screen, with a D-pad (I think) you can choose an assistance. So there’s two of you and it’s much easier.
The other thing is weapon upgrade. When you collect those glowing suitcases or boxes or whatever you can upgrade your weapon with select button (I think, again). The more suitcases you get, the better is the upgrade. Each character has a different kind of weapon and their upgrades are different.
I played this game a lot when I was a kid, only because it had the word “Contra” in the title. Anyway, great episode, can’t wait for the next one.

The upgrade system here is actually very similar to that of Life Force, which was featured on J&MM before. Each character has two different and unique weapons (which replace the original peashooter) and the ability to jump off the enemies, I think.
If you can get past those slowdowns and actually utilize the suitcase upgrades, it’s a pretty decent game. Used to play it a lot when I was a kid, too.

Well, there is also a glitch with which we can get infinite lives. Jump to mid-air and press start. Press start again and jump again and we can jump in mid-air. Press start again and we get infinite lives. I used to play it a lot with my brothers (there is a two-players mode). We don’t know it’s contra force because what we got was contra 6.

  • August 10, 2015 at 4:20 am

My god it’s Bill Rizer from Contra games and they don’t even know his name yet they grew up on Contra series .

    • Lastor

      August 10, 2015 at 4:23 am

I was thinking about that too. They even checked the names (or someone at Doug’s did) in the Probotector video.

I love it that James REALLY want to quit this shit then he fucking manages to pass that elevator-section.

You’re goddamn right the famicom version of Castlevania 3 has better music! There’s several differences in that version, including some of the enemy sprites (you get to see pixelated 8 bit tits) and the character Grant gets to throw knives instead of stab with them.

    • Smashole

      August 11, 2015 at 7:11 pm

OH HELL YEAH it’s better sounding! I only found out a year or two ago, and it just about broke my heart!
ENVY ALERT! Here’s one of many links to the original Famicom soundtrack to Castlevania 3 : dracula’s Curse, on Youtube, and it’s also in stereo!
It’s due to the more complex and expensive sound chip in the Famicom. Another example of Nintendo going cheaper on us, with the NES. Enjoy!

What makes me sad is that this is certainly a game that the Nerd could have reviewed. Oh, and Bill Rizer is the name of the blonde guy from all the other games. You guys could play Contra Rebirth on the Wii.

  • videogamehunter820

    August 10, 2015 at 10:15 am

Mike is WAY too hard on Contra Force. It’s definitely not as good as Contra or Super C, but I don’t think it’s a shitty game. Lower your standards Mike.

    August 10, 2015 at 10:20 am

Bill and Lance are the original contra characters, how do you guys not know that? okay no more comments from me

  • Alex Row

    August 10, 2015 at 10:50 am

As someone else already mentioned, the cartridge art is stolen from DoomTroopers for the snes. It’s actually a decent Contra type shooter, with digitized Donkey Kong Country style graphics.

  • August 10, 2015 at 10:54 am

To be fair guys, good games on the nes also had shitty cheap segments. Think of all the frustrating ones in Ninja Gaiden.

What? haha. They were just saying that they have no idea what games would be on it.

    August 10, 2015 at 3:23 pm

Did you try pushing reset a few times? I had seen some of these 2 in 1 games which had this feature to select between them by pushing the reset button. So maybe the other two games on the cartridge are different contra hacks.

  • August 10, 2015 at 4:34 pm

You guys sure do a lot of videos on Contra. It makes me wish I could play one of the classic Contra games. Anyhoo, can you and mike play Monster Party for the NES please? The game is so weird and I think would make for a good James & Mike Mondays video.

  • Moose Of Woe

    August 10, 2015 at 4:45 pm

@10:45 So if you get over the fact it pretty much sucks, it’s actually kinda good!

  • KingMike

    August 10, 2015 at 5:04 pm

“Super Contra IV” was a prototype title for Contra III. It was actually listed as such as a “future game” in Nintendo’s official “Super NES Player’s Guide.”
But there are bootleg Contra games on the Famicom that are probably extensive hacks of Super C.
I think one of them might have been a port of Contra III.

  • KingMike

    August 10, 2015 at 5:06 pm

Forgot that Contra Force wasn’t originally called Contra. It was supposed to be a game called Arc Hound in Japan, but that version was never released so we don’t know if it was supposed to be different or if Contra Force was just a rebranded version (since it was the only version released).

  • Wayne

    August 10, 2015 at 5:50 pm

Mike, I think the games you might want to look into were “Vs. Excitebike” for the Famicom Disk System or “Excitebike: Bun Bun Mario Battle Stadium” for the Super Famicom Satellaview. I’m not sure the regular version of Excitebike for Famicom was any different than the NES version other than the ability to save custom-designed race tracks.

I always thought Contra Force was a somewhat good game.
On the other hand, I never liked much the Contra games (the original, Super C, 4, etc). I find them… boring.

  • pleasetakeabow

    August 11, 2015 at 1:28 am

This game would have made for a good nerd episode.

  • calmLIKEaBOB-OMB

    August 11, 2015 at 5:22 am

Contra Hard Corps is pronounced ‘Hard Core’ not ‘Hard Cores’. It’s no different than how you would pronounce corps in Marine Corps.

  • Konrad Wirecki

    August 11, 2015 at 8:31 am

I used to play Contra Force a lot as a kid, and I kinda still find it not a bad game. The elevator part was confusing, but then, you could just go back to beginning on the level, then come back to elevator, it would respawn (just like enemies/stuff you destroy do).
Also there’s funny glitch letting you to jump infinitely, if you pause the game, unpause it and hold jump button when screen fades back to game.

  • August 11, 2015 at 9:52 am

guy on the cover does look like stalone

    August 11, 2015 at 2:10 pm

Thanks for the episode again. Loved the Fooooooooooooooooooooooooooouck

  • August 11, 2015 at 4:32 pm

    Jump/fly trick:
After you press jump(and when you are in the air) hit start button..then when you unpause immediately hit jump button again. Doing this over and over you can pretty much fly through sidescrolling levels..get on higher platforms where you normally couldn’t etc. It’s really helpful when the fucking elevator dissapears :). Btw great episode as always.

  • Jeff Parson

    August 12, 2015 at 8:55 am

Contra 3 on snes is hard game, Never played this one.

  • August 12, 2015 at 11:57 am

@Cinemassacre There’s a cheat code by which you can get INFINITE lives and multiple jump spam!

While pausing the game, or resuming it, press ‘Up’ on the D-pad, and the lives will show as 17. But when set to 00, and dead, it will read back to 99, going back as 90 to 79 directly, then 70 to 59, and so on!

And, if you resume the game when pressing the jump and a directional button, it will jump in mid-air which never happened in Contra Force!

And on the side note……. AVGN, we miss you. ๐Ÿ™

  • Yanis K

    August 14, 2015 at 11:19 pm

Ok I HAD to register for this one.
Helloes all. I’ve been watching Cinemassacre since maybe 2008 or 9. I remember like Sega CD was a new episode or something at the time. In any case I took the opportunity to register because I’ve played this game soooo much.

You see eastern europe got the shitty end of the stick in gaming. I didn’t have an Atari 2600, I had a chinese replica called RAMBO and it actually had Stallone on the cover as Rambo! The joysticks were like Atari joystick but they did have an extra button and it had built in memory so all the games were pre-installed. But they were original Atari games on there. Only problem is… I got it 1994! Our NES counterpart was called Terminator. It was basically a NES looking sort of like a Genesis (yh imagine that. Just google it), and we got it in 1996! Yes sir, modern people were already busting Mario 64 while I was playing what? THIS GAME.

I encountered the original Contra years later and hated it because this game right here was the Contra I knew as a child. And yes there is a 2 player version. AND I KNOW EXACTLY why they decided to cut the video there.

Remember how the elevator didn’t come back. Well you see that crate above those 3 baddies at the end of the video. You have to use it to make yourself bounce up on the platform. But fuck it up once and the crate is gone forever ๐Ÿ˜€ So yeah, guess what happened there to James and Mike ๐Ÿ˜€

    • August 16, 2015 at 11:22 am

That’s not entirely true. The crate will come back if you move away from it a sufficient distance that it’s off-screen and then return. It respawns just like any other destructible object and enemy.

  • August 15, 2015 at 10:47 am

    Hey James & Mike!!!
Did you hear IMDB made a top 250 for shows and AVGN is currently ranked #69?
    (No I am not kidding)

  • August 16, 2015 at 3:58 am

I totally lost it when James went through all the bad pronunciations of Ryu and then yelled the correct one. Hilarious!

Looks like the best part of this one is the character select screen… If this is like Contra Force, can you change the weapons? Thanks for playing!

Any way to switch out your weapons? Looks like some sort of weapon select on the bottom of the screen.
