Darkwing Duck – Angry Video Game Nerd – Episode 135

The Nerd reviews Darkwing Duck for the Turbo Grafx 16. This is the first time the Nerd has done an entire episode about a game uniquely for the TG16. (Although he did briefly talk about Fighting Street, which was aย Turbo Grafx 16 CD game)

Watch the Nerd review Fighting Street (TG16 CD) โ–บ

TurboGrapghX, hell yeah! Next time do Night Creature! It’s such a tough and annoying game (But still somewhat entertaining)

      • May 18, 2015 at 9:05 am

James, please do something about the player, it SUCKS my balls beyond belief!

    • chris jackso

      May 14, 2015 at 1:21 pm

hey james you need to make the games that dont have much reviewability into a mini series so you dont have to say much about it.

  • Benjamin Turney

    May 13, 2015 at 9:42 pm

This was a great Nintendo game though! Mega Man-esque

  • May 13, 2015 at 9:44 pm

If you want the *worst* game on this system, it’s a Japanese RPG called Energy. You probably cant play it normally on the TurboGrafx16 without a PC-Engine adapter, and it rarely even runs on an emulator but trust me it blows.

  • May 13, 2015 at 9:48 pm

No need to always review the absolute worst games ever. I’m perfectly happy watching you play all of the pretty bad games.

At least it was nice of you to mention the Mad Max NES game to tie-in with the newest Mad Max movie! Too bad it didn’t give you anything to work with, but still a good mention!

  • May 13, 2015 at 10:44 pm

The “Shit scale” is absolutely brilliant! Laughed so hard at that. Loved the small clips of various other random crappy NES games. This episode made my day.

Hilarious! I check your site everyday for a new video and look forward to them all. Gotta say though that I actually enjoy your movie reviews more than anything, hope to see more of those coming! The trivia videos were great too though I prefer the couch setting and not in a bar ๐Ÿ˜‰

    May 13, 2015 at 11:02 pm

I like that you’re in-character acknowledging that you don’t wanna stagnate as a reviewer so you’re trying to branch out and not just do the same thing ๐Ÿ™‚ it’s a smart nod to us and a good way to let us know you’re aware of what could be a problem…

    May 13, 2015 at 11:05 pm

This was thoroughly enjoyable! I’m glad you finally played a game that is on the TG16! (not a CD, but on those groovy cards).

That was great, I love that you did a Turbo Graphix 16 game! That is a system I would like to have along with a Sega Master system. Wasn’t expecting a Nerd episode on my birthday, but thanks for the unexpected gift! I happened to notice Dr. Chaos while you were thumbing through your games, that could be one that could make for a decent episode too.

Those delayed controls and shoddy hit detection are intolerable. The safe is just extra icing on the cake. I liked your shit level breakdown chart. You explained it well and the games seemed to fit into the categories well. I like how the Nerd destroyed the game by simply pitching it, haha.

  • May 14, 2015 at 12:33 am

    Welcome back.

  • Rennie Page

    May 14, 2015 at 2:02 am

I grew up loving darkwing duck along with the “Disney afternoon.” But ya this game is ass. Did Fred Fuchs take part in making this abomination? I’m curious

    May 14, 2015 at 2:16 am

Please play Time Lord by Milton Bradley on the NES.

Great music, gameplay is also amazing, but there’s plenty to get pissed about.

    Trust me, I’m telling you.

  • May 14, 2015 at 2:24 am

I like the scale at the end, maybe you could work that into future episodes, perhaps build upon it; it’s a good way to help finish videos.

Damn the safe dropping on your head is really fucked up, my controller would have gone straight towards the TV screen

  • JayRam

    May 14, 2015 at 3:54 am

I see that you own Keith Courage on the TurboGrafx16–that brings back some memories. My cousin had that game when we were kids. Most people at the time had either a SNES or Genesis; somehow his dad was able to find that console.

I’d like to see you and Mike play it for a Monday episode, because, well, it’s weird and, from what I remember, doesn’t make a lot of sense: in one level you’re some boy, the next a robot, and then back to being the boy.

    • JayRam

      May 14, 2015 at 3:59 am

And I can’t believe that Darkwing Fuck of a game is going for $100 on Amazon!

easily the best AVGN in a long time. I understand it must be harder to find games to review, which you addressed in the video, but i truly appreciate this return to ture AVGN style.

bad game, great review, I would love to see more of this. great job james.

    Loved the Shit Scale!! lol

  • May 14, 2015 at 11:48 am

Ah, yes. The ol’ “hitbox clusterfuck” game. Those can really be the most frustrating. I’ve played a few in my time, most immediately remembered being “Bart vs. The World.” The show was great, but I can tell from the footage that this game sucked ass. I was lucky enough to play the NES version instead. Aside from that, the stereoscopic 3D middle finger worked pretty well, but I had to stand WAY back from my computer screen. I know it was just a joke and not to be actually tested, but I spent two whole dollars CASH for my 3D glasses, and when your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. What? Oh, actual thoughts on the episode? Yeah, it kicked ass. I needed something to go with my breakfast malt liquor, and this certainly hit the mark. Kudos, Nerd.

Oh god I hated Darkwing Duck as a kid. I was a wierd kid I didn’t like any characters that were stupid. Darkwing Duck, Inspector Gadget, Or any parts of TV or movies where moods were altered I remember at the age of 4 not liking Dumbo cause of the pink elephant drunk scene. Anyway Inspector Gadget was the worst. He Walked around the fucking show clueless like half a tard. I mean he is supposed to be an inspector right? But his kid Niece solves his crimes???? I can’t stand when characters are just dumb for the sake of laughs it just bothers the fuck outta me as a kid not so much today cause I don’t give a shit but god damn.

    • greedo

      May 15, 2015 at 3:09 pm

Personally, I liked Darkwing Duck, but I hear ya. The whole stumbling, bumbling, idiotic hero/sidekick thing gets on my nerves. Especially when they got blamed for things that weren’t their own fault. (Like Gilligan on Gilligan’s Island. I would have loved to smack the Skipper in the head for what he did to G at times).

It’s funny, but it gets overused, and frankly, it’s tired out. Especially shows like Chip N’Dale’s Rescue rangers. I wind up feeling sorry for the poor fella. As for Gadget, yeah, that part was annoying about Penny always solving the crimes. If you’re going to have an idiot for your lead character, make it someone like Max Smart from Get Smart! He was an idiot, but unlike Gadget, he was a smart idiot.

  • May 15, 2015 at 7:37 pm

A great video this time around, James. I see the writing on the wall you bring up in this episode: you’re running out of material with this character.

I see you’re trying to promote Board James as maybe one day supplanting the Nerd as your ‘regular programming.’ I think you will run out of things to say about board games much, much faster. Perhaps take a particular game that can be played over multiple sessions (like DnD or Warhammer 40k) and make a short series arc of episodes that would tell a story that mirrors the narrative of the game somehow? Just a suggestion for some new projects! I enjoy your let’s plays, but James you’re a film maker dude, get pen to paper!

  • JHetfield0816

    May 16, 2015 at 1:23 am

I loved this, James! While I’ve really enjoyed and appreciated other episodes you’ve done with cameos/costumes/effects/etc., I liked that you went back to a more simplistic episode for this one- one where you just sit around playing a shitty game, making hilarious jokes, and getting pissed. I laughed my ass off at this one for sure- especially the part with the safe falling on you. Thanks for cheering me up today!

  • May 16, 2015 at 12:38 pm

    Kid Niki’s the bomb!

  • Chris Hoeft

    May 16, 2015 at 8:34 pm

Thank you for doing a review of the TG-16. This was the system I had as a kid instead of a Genesis or a SNES and it holds a special place in my heart.

I totally agree with your statement that this system has a lower than average shit game to good game ratio. I have every game ever made for it (US and Japanese) and almost all of them are playable and many are truly great games that have real replay potential.

You rock AVGN and I can’t wait till your game comes out on the 3DS so I can rock it. Congrats on getting a game based on the theme of your show onto a major console. Hopefully the likeness rights make you a chunk of change.

    May 17, 2015 at 2:25 am

Great episode – I really enjoy it when the Nerd is more physically animated, and there are more shots than medium closed ups of him on the couch.

For future reference, don’t try to seek out shitty games to play. Even the best NES classics have infuriating moments worthy of AVGN’esk anger.

Remember as kids, we didn’t have a huge library of games to choose from… it seems the Nerd suffering from the paradox of choice and can’t decide on a game worth playing / talking about. A kid going to the video rental store back in the day got the one game based purely on the box-art, then he/she was stuck with that title all weekend long …for better or for worse. There are hundreds of games in the NES library that are worthy of an AVGN episode.

    • Highwing

      May 17, 2015 at 2:44 am

I agree. Any random crappy game can make for a great episode. He shouldn’t feel pressured to look for the shittiest games imaginable. I still enjoy those kinds of episodes, but I think he can make any game work. Either way, this episode still felt like classic Nerd to me (Big Rigs, Hong Kong 97, etc., were great but just seemed a little “weird”). Glad to see he may be returning to a style we’re more familiar with.

Dude, Kid Niki is pretty good, IMO. It has some loose controls but it’s not unplayable, and the world is quirky enough to stand out. Played it a ton as a kid and always had fun.

  • May 19, 2015 at 12:43 pm

By the way James, the worst part of that Moon Ranger game is after the flying stage, when you are on foot. Difficult jumps, horrible gun, enemies that just wont die…you name it. It had me raging after about 5 mins lol

  • May 19, 2015 at 4:31 pm

James, did you figure out after making this video that all you have to do to get that “D” in that level is to bounce off the item you get right below it? I figured it out on accident while playing the game earlier today after watching this lol – The game is so inconsistent and crazily hard.

  • May 19, 2015 at 6:05 pm

Is it really fair to have “Desert Bus” on that scale? Not to say it was a “good” game but it’s hardly fair to call it a “bad” game when it was made to be bad intentionally by the creators of it. It’d be one thing if they tried to make a good game and failed, or just crapped out anything they could, but with Desert Bus they wanted to make a bad-game as a response to the feelings about games being too violent at the time, so create a game where you -in real time- drive a bus in the desert.

  • GinChan

    June 8, 2015 at 8:09 am

This was great but there is one shitty game i can guarantee would break the scale all the way on famicom. its a game that is legendary for its shittyness in japan that after the game was created the creators disappeared(tho they switched jobs). but its what happens when you honestly try to put everything in the game and use every suggestion this game is the the result. Its takeshi’s chousenjou or takeshi’s challenge. it has doing everything that messes with a gamers sense and there is a part that has you waiting an hour and singing karaoke into the mike LOL. you couldn’t beat the game without a strategy guide PERIOD.

It amazes me that after all these years you can still make me laugh like no one else! After 11 seasons and a full length feature, what show doesn’t get a little stale? AVGN, that’s what! Thank you for all the laughs, I can never repay you. Thank you for always finding a way to make each episode stand out, however difficult that may be. I will always watch anything The Nerd puts out!

  • June 19, 2015 at 3:52 pm

This show was a classic! I’m currently playing Ducktales for the NES, and thought about getting this game… but now I’m not so sure. LOL

  • July 10, 2015 at 2:53 pm

The AVGN is far from out of noteworthy bad NES games. One in particular comes to mind, an infamous little “gem” (read: turd) called Bokosuka Wars. If you thought Little Red Hood had issues with too much randomness, you should see what that game does. You will quickly become familiar with WOW! YOU LOSE! if you ever play that game.

  • August 12, 2015 at 12:24 pm

@Cinemassacre How about a game for NES, though it is a FamiCon level game (cause Japanese, though), it is STILL an NES game. I’ll give you the link, you see it for yourself.

Thanks, AVGN. And please, come back soon, with the game I have mentioned in THIS comment. I tell you, it’s hard as balls!
