Hong Kong 97 (Super Famicom) Angry Video Game Nerd – Episode 134

  • March 26, 2015 at 3:07 am

    Yes! Love new AVGN stuff

    • Katana

      April 2, 2015 at 7:37 pm

AVGN is funny not because the game is shitty but his reaction to the shitty game. His anger. And what would make him angry? More than just a bad game. It’s because he just put $50 of his hard earned money into a game and it turned out to be shit. This premise works for games such as Back to the Future, Superman, etc because it’s reasonable that someone would pay $50 for those games and they turned out to be a disappointment. Nobody would buy the Japanese game so there is no reason for him to be angry. He is just reviewing a bad game. James is smarter than this and I’m not quite sure what is going through his head. Maybe he is burnt out, etc. which would be understandable after over 10 years.

      • April 7, 2015 at 9:48 pm

His anger isn’t genuine on video. And if you recall the “Dr. Jekyl & Mr. Hyde”, his goal is to inform the viewers. AVGN is a PSA for retro gamers.

I dont get it. He just plays video games.

        May 21, 2016 at 2:44 am

Than you should probably stay away from youtube lol

  • March 26, 2015 at 3:17 am

I love me some AVGN … sooooooo glad to see a new video , and holy crap excellent quality on here . keep up the great work

  • GorgeousBones

    March 26, 2015 at 3:20 am

Unbelievable. I didn’t know this game existed (and I was happier for it!).

  • March 26, 2015 at 3:21 am

I’ve been watching your videos since 2004, and I just want to express my sincerest gratitude. What you’ve been creating here has been able to put a smile on my face during some of the best and worst times of my life. Screw the people who complain about the trivial things, like the time gaps between your video; you are doing what you love, and in every single minute of your videos, it is clear just how much effort you’re putting into your passion. Keep doing what you’re doing, man. You’re impacting people’s lives more than you probably even know.

    • mike keith

      March 29, 2015 at 9:49 pm

I agree 100 percent!!!! You are the BEST James, the fucking best…

      • Fred Flintrock

        February 21, 2016 at 4:42 am

Why?? All he does is play video games

  • March 26, 2015 at 3:32 am

The only way I can explain this game is that the developers were laughin off their asses while making it, so they really didn´t expected to sell any copy of it…

That, or they were on hard drugs while making it.

    • March 29, 2015 at 5:30 pm

I’d go with the latter, because some drugs make you see things, and there is the small possibility that those things you see are actually real, like a previous life or predictions… “Jesus/aliens/some spirit came and told me that a leader will die in 2 years.” Yeah, that’s how it happened. :p

  • March 26, 2015 at 3:51 am

Worse than Big Rigs? I think that’s debatable. Especially con
sidering Big Rigs actually came out in stores and people bought it.

    • Fred . Fuchs

      March 26, 2015 at 7:21 am

In Big Rigs at least you can run over mountains and reach infinite speed. But I think Action 52 and Superman 64 are the worst.

      • Unbreakable

        March 27, 2015 at 6:13 am

Not even close. Cassette 50 is the worst game ever made.

      • Highwing

        March 27, 2015 at 9:51 pm

I keep requesting for the Nerd to review Cassette 50. I hope he does sometime.

      • awesome video games

        March 28, 2015 at 10:18 pm

        Cassette 50??

      • April 19, 2015 at 8:48 pm

This may sound strange, but both of you are wright xD

  • Edgar González

    March 26, 2015 at 4:17 am

I finally watched an AVGN episode exclusive to this page :´)

  • Edgar González

    March 26, 2015 at 4:18 am

Meh, Crazy Bus is definetly worse.

  • March 26, 2015 at 4:49 am

remember when people thought killing all the zombies in Dead Rising was an insane feat? what was the city population? 50 something thousand? 60 something?

this was apparently hardcore before hardcore was hardcore XD

  • Psychojaws

    March 26, 2015 at 5:50 am

Please, for the love of God, NEVER stop making these videos. Thanks, AVGN!

  • WoW

    March 26, 2015 at 5:57 am

Wow, James. Really a great Episode of AVGN! I want more of this shit!

  • aaron5015

    March 26, 2015 at 6:16 am

    Are those new glasses?

  • March 26, 2015 at 6:24 am

This kind of game is not a good choice for s review because it’s not at all surprising that it’s bad…You know that it’s going to be bad before you even try it. It’s almost like the movie “The Room”…I can have fun watching it with friends but watching a review of it (even a humorous one) completely kills it. The nerd character is much better suited toward reviewing games that had a chance to be good but we’re botched terribly. The frustration, disappointment, and jadedness come through much better that way.

    • March 26, 2015 at 6:26 am

      Can’t edit so…

    • Highwing

      March 26, 2015 at 2:19 pm

I think both kinds of games work well. Even when he knows a game is really bad, he can still be surprised, either because it’s even worse than he thought or because there are a bunch of weird things he didn’t expect.

  • aaron5015

    March 26, 2015 at 6:31 am

i thought at the end it was gonna be “Hong Kong 97 is illuminati confirmed”…THAT MUSIC THAT TALKING…but nope …DAMN DISAPPOINTMENT.

  • March 26, 2015 at 6:44 am

    Cool a new AVGN episode!!!!!!!!
I was espectin a cliffhanger to the upcoming NC crossover review though…

  • Don Skiver

    March 26, 2015 at 6:46 am

In all seriousness, this game was probably made as a response to Hong Kong going back to Chinese rule. From what I read, there were a lot of people who had grown accustomed to, and rather liked not being under the control of a communist country that had more than it’s fair share of human rights problems. This was probably their (ineffective) way at protesting the whole thing.

    • March 28, 2015 at 6:40 am

If that was the case I doubt the (Japan-based, not from Hong Kong, Macau or even Taiwan) developer would give the objective of obliterating every single Chinese on the mainland. I would imagine people in Hong Kong (who are no less Chinese than those of the mainland) would find that very offensive.

      • Don Skiver

        March 28, 2015 at 6:25 pm

Kowloon Kurosawa (the actual person responsible for creating the game in about 1 week) has said that during that time, there was a lot of media attention about that event and that is what inspired him.

So you’re right. It wasn’t “in protest”. But it *was* directly inspired by it.

  • jim dove

    March 26, 2015 at 7:31 am

new AVGN! get out of my way bitches!

  • Czab

    March 26, 2015 at 7:44 am

At least that somewhat qualifies as a game. I don’t think Desert Bus, Crazy Bus or even Big Rigs can be called games.

  • March 26, 2015 at 7:47 am

This game seems like a creepypasta

  • March 26, 2015 at 8:22 am

I almost spat out my lunch from “fuckin’ reds!”

Holy shit, this is comedy gold! Keep doing god’s work, AVGN!

  • RandyPan

    March 26, 2015 at 8:32 am

At the end there, I kept expecting you to say “…and C is for Catwoman…”

  • March 26, 2015 at 8:35 am

I kept wanting to pop that pimple on the side of James’ nose. Couldn’t stop staring at it like the mole’s mole in Austen Powers.

  • March 26, 2015 at 8:39 am

Loved the ending. You’re a fuckin’ genius James.

  • Rick

    March 26, 2015 at 9:20 am

    I knew I smelled a new Nerd video coming up — !! 😀

  • Agnis

    March 26, 2015 at 9:33 am

The review was really funny, but that game is so offensive

  • Ben_from_G-town

    March 26, 2015 at 10:23 am

Hahaha WOW. Now that is a shitty game. So many funny things here. Jackie Chan as “Chin”… the ridiculous gameplay itself. I loved the tangent about 1997 at the end, and how it ended. 😀

  • Ben_from_G-town

    March 26, 2015 at 10:23 am

If there’s no physical copy known, how did the ROM get online? How do we know it was a real game?

    • ToadRoad

      March 27, 2015 at 6:32 pm

I was wondering the same thing. Someone could’ve easily thrown this crap together and touted it as the lost Hong Kong ’97. It’s one reason I respected the nerd avoiding roms.

  • March 26, 2015 at 10:58 am

I’m not going any further with comments, everything I can say about this man up here is reductive.

  • Shckizm

  • taykel

    March 26, 2015 at 11:11 am

That was a wacky episode, but it was worth it. I was expecting more Board James, but hey at least you put out a new AVGN episode in the meantime. My day couldn’t be more exciting.

  • JayRam

    March 26, 2015 at 11:11 am

Every time you add some sort of conspiracy theory to an AVGN episode (as done in the Super Mario Bros 3 review), it makes for comedy gold. It’s so bat-shit crazy.

  • March 26, 2015 at 11:33 am

Oh man, this is the strangest game I’ve ever laid eyes on. Love the ’97 references, great nostalgia there.

  • March 26, 2015 at 11:47 am

When is this going to be on YouTube? Tomorrow? Or it will never be there at all, like with Atari Porn?

    • Weldin Dunn

      March 28, 2015 at 11:42 am

    March 26, 2015 at 12:10 pm

Seriously, I was getting impatient over the release of a new AVGN episode. It was 100 Fucking % worth it! Also appreciate James and Mike Mondays, but you should record a few games at once and release 1 every 2 weeks… Would give you guys more time to plan things up… And release like 1 AVGN review a month… Just Sayin’

    • Highwing

      March 27, 2015 at 12:01 am

Sounds like a good idea to me. 🙂

  • March 26, 2015 at 1:28 pm

It´s nice to have the AVGN back! Where has he been for so long, there are enough shitty games out there. Keep up the good work!

  • March 26, 2015 at 2:09 pm

Wait… Aren’t those the glasses from the movie? I thought the movie and the webseries would have different glasses…

    • Lukas Sprehn

      March 29, 2015 at 7:51 pm

I once asked Mike about this, and he told me he believed the prescription of James’ old glasses was out dated and so he had to buy new ones. It would’ve been cool if he’d gotten the same kind of frame, but maybe it’s very expensive or something.

  • March 26, 2015 at 2:19 pm

Wow a new AVGN on my birthday, sweet. Hope the Movie dvd comes out soon.

  • Monty22001

    March 26, 2015 at 2:20 pm

1997 has almost as much cosmic background as 1955

  • doublesbrian

    March 26, 2015 at 2:34 pm

    Awesome review.

Surprised you didn’t meantion that Jackie Chan worked as a stuntman in the Bruce Lee films Fist of Fury and Enter the Dragon.

    • greedo

      March 26, 2015 at 4:20 pm

Another interesting factoid- which comes up in Jackie’s autobiography- is that when Jackie originally came to Hollywood in the late 70’s and mid 80’s, they totally miscast him. They either thought that he was a Bruce Lee, or Clint Eastwood type. His role in Battle Creek Brawl was a total rip-off of Jackie Chan.

Speaking of Jackie(and Bruce) Jackie mentioned how all the stunt doubles would challenge Bruce to fight them. They would all sit on a wall between takes, waiting for their turn to take him on. There’s no indication that any of them actually beat Bruce, although Sammo Hung claims to have beaten him.

It’s possible that he did, but I doubt it. Bruce was just too fast.

  • March 26, 2015 at 2:41 pm

The video missed one thing at the end of the video. An X-files tune.

  • March 26, 2015 at 2:47 pm

    March 26, 2015 at 4:22 pm

Finally! A Nerd episode! It’s about time that you made one of these. This is awesome. I was laughing at this, like I’ve never laughed at any of your episodes. And that was just from you reading the introduction of the game! 🙂

  • March 26, 2015 at 4:38 pm

This is definitely the funniest (and strangest) thing I’ve seen in a while. Nice usage of the Italian Uncle Scrooge cover, James. 🙂 1997 was the year I fell sick with epilepsy – so this game gave me epilepsy. It’s not a game, it’s more of a tech demo that you’d see on a Commodore Amiga 500.

  • Legion Atreides

  • Dan021

Awesome ending there, all of that to say it’s a fucking shitty game. XD You had me going for some meaning there! Nice job James like always. I can’t wait for the next one. Long live the nerd!

I remember playing games like this on the C64 and Amiga when I was a kid. Violent and crude political statements.. typically sadistic, profane and incredibly cheap. See: Libyan Commando, GI Joe Smurf Massacre, Killer Games, Commie Bob and actual commercial titles like Friday the 13th and Death Wish III.

  • Vince Abbruzzese

    March 26, 2015 at 11:10 pm

    March 26, 2015 at 11:12 pm

For those that are not familiar with the current political climate in Hong Kong, I am here to explain why this game is so awesome. This would make bunch of Hong Kong people so freaking happy. Good job Happysoft, you lived up to your name. It may look like shit but it is a god damn masterpiece to us Hong Kongers. It is funny and irony that the game had predicted the future accurately. Crime rate sky rockets and bunch of reds actually rush to Hong Kong every day. The amount of Chinese tourists traveling to Hong Kong each year is more than the total population of Hong Kong and it is expected to increase in the foreseeable future. If you live in Hong Kong, you can see new types of crime that had never happened in the pass 100 years starts to occur. Those crimes however, are very common in the mainland China. Well, you’ve got the idea. This game made in 1995 precisely predicted the future after 1997 and what it’d predicted is still true in 2015. Whoever made this game should be the governor of Hong Kong, he/ she has the vision that we need to bring us out of this shitty time lol.

    • March 28, 2015 at 6:44 am

“The amount of Chinese tourists traveling to Hong Kong each year is more than the total population of Hong Kong and it is expected to increase in the foreseeable future.”

You do realize that people in Hong Kong are already Chinese right? British colonial rule sure did succeed in dividing Chinese against Chinese…

      • July 10, 2015 at 4:52 pm

Mainlanders and Hong Kong Chinese are different, because we were brought up different, raised different. Plus, there are non-Chinese Hongkongers–peoples from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the UK, America, Canada, Switzerland, Sweden, France, Germany, Zimbabwe, Nigeria… so many groups that are not ethnically Chinese.

  • mysterywolf

I was half expecting to hear a “Half life 3 confirmed.”

  • Tross

    March 27, 2015 at 12:55 am

This game somehow seems familiar. I must have seen someone else’s vid on it at some point. Maybe it was an episode of Weird Video Games, but I can’t remember. I do remember this game from something though. I’m assuming it has become an Internet phenomenon since I doubt anyone would pay much heed to a really obscure game never released in our region otherwise.

  • Aaron1375

    March 27, 2015 at 1:18 am

If someone would play that game for an extended period of time, I fear they may go insane and go on a killing spree.

  • Madie

    March 27, 2015 at 1:45 am

james, did you get new glasses?

  • meanspirit

    March 27, 2015 at 5:14 am

I’m not so sure about the Nerd laughing so much, seems a bit out of character. He was much angrier back in the day. Wonderfully crappy game though.

    • greedo

      March 27, 2015 at 2:17 pm

I dunno, I think it adds another dimension to the character. Not even the AVGN is angry all the time! I think the laughing in disbelief certainly wouldn’t be out of step here, considering how pained he is over this game.

      • Highwing

        March 27, 2015 at 5:08 pm

I agree with Greedo. When he laughs, it seems more out of disbelief or even cynical. Also, he’s been doing this for a long time, so obviously his humor is going to evolve. If he stayed exactly the same throughout all this time, I think that’d get pretty old for most people. It’s nice to see him trying more creative things.

  • March 27, 2015 at 5:35 am

That was a great episode :p

  • Toshiaki Nagayama

    March 27, 2015 at 6:07 am

Actually, this game seemd to be never intended to sell as a ROM cartridge. Happysoft sold this piece of s**t by floppy disc so it should be played with Game backup device (or magicon in Japan).

You Should Play This Game It Is Horrible The Name Is Cho Aniki

  • juggernautakira

    March 27, 2015 at 6:07 pm

Its an interesting vid on a lousy lost game, but James, you should keep to games weve all played and know that suck. I havent played all the games or systems youve reviewed, but I knew of them and therefore, identified with the vids. This, Big rigs, desert bus, these shouldnt be fore the AVGN.

    • Highwing

      March 27, 2015 at 9:25 pm

Why not? I like when he introduces us to rare games like this, Little Red Hood, etc., simply because of the fact that they’re totally new and foreign to me. I think that would get a little boring if he reviewed nothing but mainstream games that are familiar to most people. The weirdness of some of the rarer games makes the reviews more interesting. One of my least favorite AVGN episodes was Ghosts n’ Goblins. While the Nerd was funny in it, the game itself was incredibly uninteresting, with hardly anything weird or humorous in it.

  • ToadRoad

    March 27, 2015 at 6:29 pm

I found a goof. Somewhere in the middle, he’s referring to the game and mistakenly references 1995 as the setting. No big deal. Great episode, although I thought the 4 small windows in the corners during the opening credits looked really bad and aesthetically unpleasant. The main image was newly-edited, so he should’ve excised these distracting add-ons.

  • March 28, 2015 at 6:45 am

Haha, Surge. That stuff has come back and you can now find it in convenience stores. To hear you reference it with this coincidental video, which was released this year, is hilarious. Does that mean we’re living 1997 all over again?!? Dun dun duuuuun!

  • Glorious Gerbil

    March 28, 2015 at 11:56 am

    Good to see new AVGN!
This reminds me of a programming campaign a computermagazine aimed towards beginners and people who enjoyed simpler things with computers and did not wish to get too technical. This magazine gave a way a free programming tool (i think it was Delphi) where readers learned simple programming and later could send in their creations!
This looks like several of those games that came out of their readers creations!
THis just reminded me of that 🙂 The game has a charm to it, even though absolutely crap ofcourse!

  • Lodmot

    March 28, 2015 at 2:01 pm

LOL! xDD Where the fuck do you find these games dude?
There actually is a way you can play games not available on cartridges on your actual system. There’s a cartridge called Everdrive that has a built-in SD card reader. You can use that to play ROM files right on your SNES/NES/Sega Genesis system. I have a Sega Genesis Everdrive cart for games like Sonic 2 Beta, which are nearly impossible to find on actual cartridges. It has a nice menu system for browsing all the games on the SD card and everything.

  • April 2, 2015 at 2:28 am

I recently moved to Hong Kong and this game makes a lot of sense to me (though it’s still a shitty game). Hong Kongers have a serious grudge against Mainlanders and the CCP. The recent pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong are an excellent example of this friction. As James noted, Great Britain handed HK over to China in 1997 and the Hong Kong people where very concerned about the transition. This is why Deng Xiaoping is seen as the enemy and Bruce Lee/Jackie Chan (HK’s golden boys) are portrayed as the good guys. Deng Xiaopeng was chiefly responsible for the “one country, two systems” philosophy which gave Hong Kong 50 years of autonomy from China after the handover. Anyway, it’s all amazingly relevant to what’s happening today and I find it surprisingly coincidental that James reviewed this game now. All in all, this is an extremely significant example of games being used as propaganda. I’ll have to see if I can track down a physical copy here in Asia.

The music sounds like it contains the lyrics “get annoyed”</strong?

  • April 2, 2015 at 7:45 pm

That tripped me the fuck out. Best video on the internet. Period.

That fucking song just blows my brain out!
Yeah…Back then Hong Kong citizens weren’t so pleased to see a Red/CCP Government take over their rule… While now the economy is getting better, Mainland migration and election controversy is annoying. I’m the Mainlander, but it’s just fucking hilarious to see mainlanders/CCP ripped-off as if they were justice-eating monsters. I wonder if someone could make a “PeKing ’89” parodying THAT protest that occured in June. Chinese fans, please reply!

Nice new avgn episode! Keep up the good work james!

Btw does anybody knows the lyrics of that song in the video???

  • April 4, 2015 at 4:25 pm

wikipedia mentions: “The corpse is a still shot from a video of Polish boxer Leszek Błażyński the day he committed suicide.”
Although it doesn’t cite a source, the date on the video-still matches his suicide date.
    That would be beyond awful…

Do you mean “The Number 23”?

    • ToadRoad

      April 16, 2015 at 1:05 am

Watching that movie just once (The Number 23) is even too much in my opinion. It’s like a less entertaining version of Pi. Be interested to hear James’ thoughts on either of those films.

That ‘music’….it’s eating at me, it won’t go away, it just wont. go. away!!!!

I suffer from a neurological disorder and one of the symptoms is obsessive thought patterns. If I get a thought or tune stuck in my head, it won’t go away for Gods only knows.

I mean, I hate “Born in the USA” because of that drum beat repeating itself over and over and over and over and over and fucking over!!! But this….oh, ho ho ho! THIS is far worse!

Hong Kong fan here. This is freaking amazing. Didn’t know this thing ever existed. So much historical context, and such a shitty game.

Keep going, James, really enjoy your videos.

Laughed my ass off. You kept it hilarious and compelling with mostly just the game footage and your face reacting. Like old school reviews. You still got it.

  • May 3, 2015 at 12:40 pm

FINALLY! Many times i have asked you to do an episode on this game 🙂

I like the fact that he calls attention to Jackie Chan, but doesn’t mention that the other image is Mao. Of COURSE the game would start by denigrating “fuckin’ ugly Reds.”

  • starcrunch061

    May 6, 2015 at 3:24 pm

Oops. I thought the guy at the beginning was Mao. I guess it’s Deng.

Well, as a Chinese I was totally freaked out by AVGN’s imagination about this game lmao. And I’d say James really put a lot effort just for this shitty freaky game, the amount of research and the reaction and the explaination about 97. And that music in the start, if I remember it’s from Wargame: European Escolation which is also a endless loop in game music never stops not even you lose or return to the title screen, is that just a coincidence? hmmmmm. Anyway, another master piece of shit.
