the scythe is used to harvest grass and grain. the grim reaper is the harvester of souls. hence the scythe.

    • krabstarr

      October 20, 2014 at 1:08 am

To expand on that, the verb “To Reap” means to “cut or gather (a crop or harvest)”. So the Grim Reaper uses the scythe, which is commonly used by men to harvest their crop of grain, to harvest his crop of mortal souls.

        October 20, 2014 at 5:19 am

Also sickles are shorter and one-handed.

      • October 20, 2014 at 1:13 pm

How do you change your profile picture?

      • October 25, 2014 at 10:20 pm

Men are as wheat before the scythe!
Humankind is symbiotic with grain and this connection has been recognized since time immemorial.
Traffic did the 500+year old song “John Barley Corn Must Die” some good justice. 😀

Kullen, try creating a Gravtar account with the same email address.

      • May 17, 2015 at 6:37 am

        WAS commonly used.

  • October 20, 2014 at 12:33 am

One of the games that introduced me to the system.

  • Crippen

    October 20, 2014 at 12:38 am

It’s in the name, you dopes. Grim reaper. People who reaped grain used scythes to reap it.

It’s like, if there existed someone called the “Ghost bazooka-er” and you were wondering how on earth they ever came up with the idea that he wielded a bazooka.

    It’s his name.

Hot Piss is a great song too, lol.

    October 20, 2014 at 1:22 am

I have a request. Can you guys upload all the parts to one game in one day, so we can see different games every week for J&MM?

    • October 20, 2014 at 2:27 am

It takes me a while to edit the videos. If we play something for a long time like this, I need to divide it into parts.

      • October 20, 2014 at 7:45 pm

Whatever you do..don’t ever stop making these awesome vids! I really enjoy J&Mmondays. It’s like I’m there with you playing these shitty and awesome games.
You’re like my two best friends haha :p……. No really!…I don’t have any friends so….:p

Not only that, but you guys really need to play through the Resident Evil REmake on the Gamecube! That game has scared the everloving shit out of me ever since I got it back in 2002. Awesome fucking horror game.

Mode 7 particularly refers to the method the SNES uses for zooming in and rotating graphics, like when you see the ground rotate in Mario Kart or riding a chocobo in FFVI (or FFIII if you prefer).

The Grim Reaper is a “reaper”, like reaping a harvest. Except the harvest is dead people, not crops. That’s why he has a scythe.

Toad actually had a starring role on the NES (and SNES) once too, but it was in “Wario’s Woods”. He’s the player character trying to stop Wario from, um, something (??) involving a forest.

Oddly enough, Megaman III for gameboy also had the charge shot, but the gameboy versions liked to have things a number early (like half the robot masters in each game for instance, aside from V which had all-new ones), since they were made afterwards.

Speaking of Megaman, there’s a code in Megaman VII to use music from this game for Shade Man’s stage.

Hey Mike, I remember you saying you and James were gonna one day attempt Silver Surfer for a J&MM. Any idea when? I’m really eager to see it!

  • Internoob

    October 20, 2014 at 3:51 am

Also, its awesome that you guys mentioned Demon’s Crest! That was my all time favorite SNES game. You should do it next week, in the spirit of Halloween! 😀

  • October 20, 2014 at 4:37 am

U kiddin’ not knowing what the scythes are for!

  • October 20, 2014 at 4:49 am

I finally beat this game a few years ago. It only took about 20 years of playing.

  • October 20, 2014 at 4:54 am

About the full of shit thing… Funny story. My dad’s been a cop for over 30 years. You see/hear some crazy stuff. Farmers don’t put up with much, and these stoners kept trespassing onto this one guy’s cow pasture to collect magic mushrooms. After chasing them off a few times, he’d had enough. Unsurprisingly, they drove a VW bus. He drove his tractor with a manure trailer over to it and filled it up as much as he could.

    October 20, 2014 at 5:27 am

Great choice please maybe do contra 3 SNES thanks

  • October 20, 2014 at 5:37 am

Great as always. Still longing to see Zombies ate my Neighbours!

  • October 20, 2014 at 6:15 am

About the iTunes thing: that’s why you shouldn’t use Apple products. They do whatever the hell they want, and you don’t have any say about it.
I use Android phones with a Windows PC. I never have to use iTunes or something shitty like that.

  • October 20, 2014 at 6:39 am

I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned this yet or not, but the reason the Grim Reaper has a Scythe is because death harvests the living, like a farmer harvests the crops.
im pretty big into Demonology and Mythology so ive known this for a while, but i figured id let anyone else know who was curious about it

  • andthenthecagecomesdown

    October 20, 2014 at 7:31 am

Swedish mercenaries and marauders actually did something similar to Mike’s idea with the septic tank to the German population during Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648). It was a gruesome torture method known as “Schwedentrunk”.

  • October 20, 2014 at 7:48 am

This is my childhood right here. This game ROCKS.
Its also tough as nails ! Made me rage so hard growing up.
I’m an idiot for selling this and Demon’s Crest along with my snes a long time ago 🙁

Did you two notice that you have a tendency of ending up talking about shit and assholes?
If that’s your thing or something fine. But maybe don’t fill so many videos with it…

  • Joker83

    October 20, 2014 at 11:14 am

I love you guys so much, but come on with the Grim Reaper conversation… He’s a REAPER and that is why he has a Scythe. It’s really as simple as that.
Anyway, great game, and thanks for the longer J&MM videos, they are always a lot of fun.

Regarding songs about terrible things in software, I didn’t write a song, but I did write a 16 page, single spaces list on all the shitty things that Final Cut Pro does. It’s a pretty good read I think. Check it out.

    October 20, 2014 at 1:32 pm

The idea of the grim reeper carrying a sickle is used to represent how he has come to harvest souls, as you would use a sickle to harvest corn and hay

  • October 20, 2014 at 1:58 pm

I did not check to see if some one posted this. If so sorry to repeat info. The reaper or Grimm Reaper has a scythe cause the act of harvesting hay wheat with a scythe is reaping. As in reaping what you have sown. Hence the grim reaper uses a scythe (a large curved blade at the end of a long staff) and sickles (smaller one handed curved reaping tool). hope this helps clear up some things. They are commonly used by the reaper to harvest the souls of men as easily as hay in a field.

Wasn’t there a clip from “Spirit” in Cinemassacre 200?

  • CartridgeGamer

    October 20, 2014 at 3:07 pm

My scythe, I like to keep it next to where my heart used to be.

    Great episode!

  • October 20, 2014 at 4:00 pm

you go the title wrong. it’s not gng, it’s SUPER gng damnit! gng was an nes game.

    • MrBrrumpkins

      October 21, 2014 at 9:31 am

I believe your “gng” is only meaning Ghouls ‘N Ghosts correct? So, “gng” was not an nes game as it was an..Kyle take it away…Amiga, Arcade, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, Genesis, Sega Master System, Atari ST, Sinclair ZX81/Spectrum gammmmmme. Ghouls ‘N Ghosts Online was cancelled before being released on PC and PS2.

  • October 20, 2014 at 4:44 pm

lol Jesus… the Grim REAPER!!! He REAPS. Have you ever heard of the phrase ‘you REAP what you sow’? As in, you sow seeds and then you REAP them… with a scythe!

  • October 20, 2014 at 4:55 pm

I´m not a fan of Ghouls´n´Ghosts/Ghost´n´Goblins or whatever, but I like watching other people playing it. Kinda strange.

  • OmegaKaozz

    October 20, 2014 at 6:16 pm

You see the scythe is used to harvest, and the grimm ripper harvest souls

  • Kane_Magus

    October 20, 2014 at 6:55 pm

9:55 – 10:30 So, basically, you guys need to make “You Know What’s Bullshit” the music album now.

  • isak paulander

    October 20, 2014 at 7:01 pm

Well, i guess he got a schyte beacuse he is the harvester of souls

  • Weldin Dunn

    October 20, 2014 at 7:44 pm

They should play some N64 games.

  • xZOMBIEx

    October 20, 2014 at 7:57 pm

Mike, there IS seriously a movie where what you were talking about with a guy being filled up with shit till he exploded…. Go look for and check out the movie called “Inbred” it was made/released in 2011 and it was actually pretty decent… It’s pretty much exactly like how you were describing it, but with some small differences… Not sure where you can find it or if it’s available on Netflix or sites like that, the way I watched it was by downloading via torrent site… So if you’re unable to find it any other way and you all are into torrents then there’s that way… Definitely check it out though, it’s a cool little horror movie and has some good kills in it besides the one you talk about….

  • xZOMBIEx

    October 20, 2014 at 8:12 pm

Also the villain from Ghost and Goblins that has his own game you were talking about, his name is Firebrand, he is also in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3… Unfortunately that game is out of print now and cannot be purchased digitally, the only way to get it is to find it used or if a store happens to have a new copy from before they stopped making them…

  • Todd Skelley

    October 20, 2014 at 9:02 pm

    Get the knife ! ! ! Lol

  • October 21, 2014 at 1:19 am

Every time James said “Oh boy”, I was reminded of Scott Bakula’s character from Quantum Leap.

  • October 21, 2014 at 1:43 am

That sound kind of reminds me of the sound the skeletons make in “Symphony of the Night”, the ones that shoot lasers out of their cocks. lol

  • October 21, 2014 at 1:46 am

The Grim Reaper has a sickle so that he may “reap” what has been sown, much like a sickle is used to reap hay and even mow grass.

  • Ben_from_G-town

    October 21, 2014 at 2:10 am

Nice video. That game does indeed look tough. I don’t know if I could get through it, haha. Commentary was entertaining as always.

  • October 21, 2014 at 2:52 am

    No No

  • October 21, 2014 at 2:56 am

That doesn’t make sense. It’s really really hard but is a really good game. Games that are that hard usually have a bad excuse for being hard. They are hard-frustrating rather than hard-fun.

  • movviewer

    October 21, 2014 at 3:31 am

The reason the Grim Reaper is often depicted with a scythe is because he is a “harvester of souls” and the scythe is a farm tool for harvesting certain crops.

  • gluserty

    October 21, 2014 at 8:33 am

Okay, I have to say it: I love Mike’s shirt!

  • MrBrrumpkins

    October 21, 2014 at 10:07 am

The origins of the Grim Reaper began when someone was whacking hay all day with a scythe… I’ve always enjoyed the realness of the J&MM videos. They don’t always beat the game and they don’t always say things correctly. Whether they’re joking or just talking out of their asses because they’re focus is on the game doesn’t matter. There are always things we “know” and we have to be reminded of it. I drew a blank about the whole harvester of souls and reaping links, but we’ve all heard of it before.

  • October 21, 2014 at 12:56 pm

What do you guys think of changing the shortenning of James And Mike Mondays to Cinemassacre’s JAMM or just JAMM?

  • J5

    October 21, 2014 at 2:47 pm

I remember this game having a great soundtrack lol!!!

  • Curtisrich

    October 21, 2014 at 7:07 pm

The word shit originates from when they would ship manure by boat. They did not want the manure to get wet (ruined) so they would put the letters S.H.I.T. which meant to store high in transit.

  • October 21, 2014 at 7:25 pm

James and Mike, what did you guys think of the Maximo games? Ever think of reviewing those?

  • DanteAlexander

    October 22, 2014 at 12:48 am

James, Mike and I said ‘Get the knife!’ at the same time. Those daggers got me out of sooooooo many problems in that game. Thanks for uploading this. Now I gotta play this on my PS2 since I don’t have my SNES anymore. Wah! On a side note, my grandmother bought this game for my brother and I before she passed away. So this game has a special place in my heart because of that.

  • fcabanski

    October 23, 2014 at 2:21 am

A scythe is not used to cut hay. Hay is dried grass or plants. A scythe is used to cut/mow grass and reap crops.

  • October 23, 2014 at 12:27 pm

a scythe is used to “harvest” the souls of the dead by the reaper, similar to a farmer harvesting grain.

  • Ẍїηα¢нї

    October 24, 2014 at 2:23 am

Mike and James, please do Demon’s Crest as your next game. What a gem that game was.

It would be awesome if you played Super Metroid!

  • johnpseudo

    October 24, 2014 at 3:06 pm

The guy on the screen saw the boundary of the screen, the end of his reality as he knows it and the dark depressing all encompassing black void that devoured it. As the edge of the void came too close all his courage left him and he got so scared that he jumped back …. and died.

  • johnpseudo

    October 24, 2014 at 3:19 pm

The death by the side of the spike-problem is an easy one: The spikes are made of Nickel and the guy gets an anaphylactic shock when touching even the sideof it, as he´s allergic to it. Come one guys, that´s sooo damn obvious. Just because he goes around throwing knives, slaying dragons and saving virgins (from virginity) that doesn´t mean he can´t have allergies. We all have our special cryptonite, don´t we … ?!

  • October 25, 2014 at 3:53 pm

The grim reaper carries a scythe because it is a metaphor. At the end of life we are cut down by death, like wheat is with the scythe.

  • October 26, 2014 at 12:20 pm

This game was so frustrating and I don’t mean just because it was so hard. It was frustrating because I loved the graphics and music and that made me want to keep playing, but I couldn’t get passed the Ghost ship level. Ugh!

  • October 26, 2014 at 12:24 pm

This game was basically Ghouls ‘N Ghosts the Enhanced Remix on SNES. Because we already had the excellent arcade port of Ghouls ‘N Ghosts on Sega Genesis. This took it to the next level. Improving the graphics, music, modifying and adding new levels.

  • October 26, 2014 at 12:27 pm

Mode 7 isn’t different layers, James. Different layers in the background are parallax scrolling, like James said, Mode 7 was the ability to make things zoom in and out in a smoother manner. It was used for final battle with Bowser in SMW. Actraiser when you travelling down to the map and a slew of other games. Mode 7 really helped the SNES set itself apart from Genesis among other things.

  • January 10, 2016 at 9:07 am

Jesus you guys are idiots. the scythe is symbolic…. our lives are as stalks of hay, you see? hence the “reaper” the fact that he reaps lives is what makes his reaping grim. jesus get it together nerds. i expected better from you.

  • August 8, 2016 at 7:22 pm

Best thing about this game, as all the Ghost and Goblins games, the music!

The editing in some of these episodes seems very wonky. Like at the end around 21:05 when the dragon boss turns into those two little guys and James starts to freak out, then suddenly it’s back to the dragon and he wins.
