Insidious (2010)

Mike Matei / October 19th, 2014

Today we look at a modern horror film about ghosts and possession. A young boy travels outside his body, leaving himself an open vessel for evil demons to enter.

I’m not even a fan of horror movies, but I’m loving these videos.

Same, i never liked horror since i was a child but i love these vids

  • October 19, 2014 at 6:48 am

The demon looks pretty scary, but the plot itself doesn´t convince me at all.
    Nevermind, the review´s cool anyway.

  • October 19, 2014 at 7:06 am

It sounds like a scary movie, but the plot sounds ridiculous.

    • October 19, 2014 at 10:46 am

I think the opposite is the case. The plot is very interesting, but the movie is ruined by not being scary.

Sadly, the movie is extremely dependant on jump scares. I don’t want to call it bad, but I hated it. I mean, there are obviously a lot of very interesting ideas present in it, but my god, these worthless fucking jump scares. While James is correct in pointing out that they aren’t “fake”, but that absolutely does not help. There could have been so many good scares in this movie but instead it’s just EVERYTHING IS LOUD AND HECTIC BOOGA BOOGA BOOGA!!!

I’ve seen movies that are all jump scares before and really, once you have seen one you have seen them all.

Also, the tip toe through the tulips thing (that James didn’t mention but all other reviewers typicall do) didn’t work at all.

      • October 19, 2014 at 12:07 pm

I think you just really hate Jump Scares, and they blind you to anything else. There’s plenty of really creepy scenes in the movie and they don’t all rely on cheep jump scares.

you should review Sinister (2012) for me it was scary as hell

    • October 19, 2014 at 10:48 am

      “The Conjuring” is far better.

Sinister is about idiots being idiots. “Dear main character, I am the expert character and here to inform you that what you are seeing is the work of the ancient evil god of eating children.” “Wow, I sure hope I don’t suffer the same fate as everyone else” JUMPSCARE JUMPSCARE JUMPSCARE JUMPSCARE

      • October 19, 2014 at 12:11 pm

Stop hating on Jump Scares so much. Also, did you miss the super-8 home movies bit? That shit is god damn terrifying, and none of it relies on jump scares.

Also, every horror movie is about idiots being idiots. Like, that’s the main point, because no one else would investigate that creepy noise or whatever.

Sinister was a lot better than I thought it would be. The plot is interesting, and the music is some of the best I have heard in a modern horror film. The soundrack alone is worth the viewing.

Side note, a little bit of the music Trent Reznor wrote for Gone Girl sound a lot like the music from Sinister.

Review the movie “The Others” with Nicole Kidmann.
I think it one of the scariest movies of all time.

    • October 19, 2014 at 3:59 pm

I know everyone has their own opinion, so I mean you no offense- but I saw that movie when it was brand new and found it boring and not scary at all. Rewatched it a couple of years later and it was even worse.

    • October 19, 2014 at 6:17 pm

i saw the others in theaters when i was like 14 and i did really enjoy it, i thought the idea was unique and executed well, but scary? not even close… and once u know the ending its really not worth watching again, but still a very decent movie nonetheless

I love that film. It’s actually a loose adaptation of the Turn of the Screw. Another, equally spooky and excellent adaptation is The Innocents from 1961. And then there’s a prequel film (which I haven’t seen yet) called the Nightcomers starring Marlon Brando!
I’d love to see a review of any of those movies.

Now that you’re a dad, have you ever feared for your daughter’s health?

    October 19, 2014 at 9:26 am

I’m not really sure how ghosts are “abstract”. Doesn’t not knowing something tend to make things more scary?

  • October 19, 2014 at 9:56 am

    COOL Great video

How about it was a possesed goldfish all the time and they blame it on a girl?

  • October 19, 2014 at 10:14 am

I haven’t seen this one yet, but it looks pretty good and I heard positive reviews. It does look like an amped up version of Poltergeist. Great review!

One of the very few horror movies to actually keep me up at night. It was that old woman. That old woman just killed it for me.

  • October 19, 2014 at 1:56 pm

Nice! Maybe we’ll see some of the other big modern haunted house movies soon. However, I kind of want to know what he thought about movies like ‘Drag Me to Hell’ since it is a Sam Raimi horror movie and ‘Event Horizon’ since that is an old favorite space horror film of mine.

  • Matthew Collins

    October 19, 2014 at 3:18 pm

I thought that this movie had everything it took to be this generation’s Poltergeist and overall a great solid ghost story… until the very end. The end of the movie ruined everything. Pisses me off just thinking about it.

    October 19, 2014 at 4:11 pm

You know, I’m not really into the whole “ghost” or “demonic” thing either (because I don’t believe in ghosts or demons) but because you said that this is a modern horror movie that *doesn’t* rely on lots of visceral horror and blood and gore and shit, I’m pretty interested in seeing this now.

  • PresidentJenkins

    October 19, 2014 at 4:35 pm

I gotta say, I had no interest in seeing this movie before the review, but seeing the scenes throughout the movie has me more interested. I’m not a big fan of paranormal movies, especially the recent ones, mainly because they’ve become the new “slasher flick” of horror. Meaning that Hollywood keeps pushing out this specific type of genre again and again. This movie looks a little more unique in the sea of crap though, and yes, using a girl who going all over the place with her body is a huge cliche for this genre. Glad to see it tries to buck the trend in what’s become a over saturated market at this point.

  • October 19, 2014 at 5:08 pm

SCARY MOVIE man! go for SCARY MOVIE!

  • October 19, 2014 at 5:40 pm

I love that you agree with me on the ridiculous sound effects they use to scare the audience for nothing, but I’m probably one step more annoyed by this, because I hate anything they do with the music or sound effects to get a reaction from audience. They should rely only on visual for that and if they can’t pull it off, they give it up. I hate having to constantly adjust my sound system to avoid getting blasted by unnecessary noise that adds nothing to the film.

    • October 19, 2014 at 5:42 pm

*should just give it up already

      • October 19, 2014 at 5:44 pm

I started to watch this movie two os three times and until the part I watched nothing really happened but just the expectation scared the shit of me then I stopped.

    October 19, 2014 at 7:09 pm

I remember my cousin was buggin after seeing this and told us if we watched it we’d be freaked out just as much. It didn’t really scare me at all. I wish James would do a review of Sinister. Now that movie fuckin creeped me out.

Honestly, this is probably the only modern horror movie that I really enjoyed. I came in expecting it to be another terrible Paranormal Activity ripoff, but the plot was actually unique and I found myself on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next.

    October 19, 2014 at 10:47 pm

This movie looks so damn hokey but, based on this review, there’s also some disturbing imagery and effects that might be interesting to see. I might just check it out.

I was actually impressed by this movie. I wasn’t expecting much from it though. I hated that the film ended on a cliffhanger, mind you, and for whatever reason I didn’t end up seeing the sequel, though I heard it’s terrible anyways.

  • Fred Fuchs

    October 20, 2014 at 3:18 am

This movie sucked ass, I’m sorry.

It’s not scary – the demon looks like Darth Maul for God sake. At the end of the movie he chases a guy around a house while Tiny Tim plays. And it’s all played straight, too.

Like did they make this shitty movie as a joke?

  • October 20, 2014 at 3:28 am

It’s just a shame ‘The Further’, which is promised to be a strange outer-realm where the mind and the physical blend as one torturous whole where nothing is as it seems and nightmares truly exist, appears as just a dusty old empty studio filled with dry ice and the least scary song of all time ‘Tiptoe Through the Tulips’ by Tiny Tim is incongruously playing on repeat.

  • October 20, 2014 at 7:39 am

I really don’t like horror movie now in days because they aren’t horror movies they are what I call Scary movies not horror movies

  • October 20, 2014 at 12:01 pm

while having one of the coolest most original demons in any movie I can think of, the movie itself was just boring and lame. The entire end sequence in the spirit world was awful and the sequel I couldnt even stay awake for.

Many people disliked the demon citing the darth maul similarity but honestly it was a very human looking creature which made you feel this at one point might have been but was so twisted and evil this is what it ended up becoming.

  • October 20, 2014 at 3:32 pm

All I could think of when you said jump scares in modern horror movies was the lazy jump scare in Night of the Living Dead.

  • October 20, 2014 at 10:08 pm

My Gosh, the “Little Girl Lost” is one of the creepiest episodes of the Twilight Zone, I know there’s nothing scary in the episode but Hell! Can you imagine if that happened sometime when you’re sleeping?

  • MadHitz

    October 21, 2014 at 3:09 am

Hey James, it’s almost refreshing when you do a review of a horror movie that was made within the past 10 years. I know that the classics have been given more care and attention, and are more well-made overall, but there are definitely some hidden gems in the modern generation of horror as well.

This one was pretty good, but I remember watching it with a group, and all of us were wondering what happened to the other kids. Maybe they turn up in the sequel… Thanks for the review. These videos are always fun.

I hear you talk all the time that there’s not that original and i can honestly say to you that the original died. After some overused most of the ideas you will see only pieces here and there borrowed from another film for us to say that was pretty original.

Alright. Insidious is one of the very, very best modern horror movies. No movies are original anymore, so why bring that up? The point of Insidious is that it is so well made. And on a budget of one million dollars?! Come on, recognize!
