Zombie Nation? It has nothing to do with zombies. Actually, I think it’s supposed to be Samurai Zombie Nation. I can’t be the only one who thought of Nicolas Cage as the head in a live action spoof. He’s not Japanese, but that would still be awesome. Now that you’ve brought up hell, how about playing some classic Doom or Doom II sometime?

    September 29, 2014 at 1:37 am

The kanji that is shown when Namakubi dies is MUNEN (無念). It means regret.

      September 29, 2014 at 1:52 am

I was about the write the same after I googled it. Tho it would be fucking awesome if it yelled FFUUUUCK.

If you think the amount of bullets in Zombie Nation is bad, try Ikaruga or Radiant Silvergun.

  • signormu

    September 29, 2014 at 2:10 am

When the head dies he says “Munen” which is a word of Buddhist origin which in this case means “damn it” (well maybe it’s more refined that that actually..).

  • Michael Holmes

    September 29, 2014 at 2:44 am

Ah, but what if you made the live action version? 😀

  • Stefanoragnopazzo

    September 29, 2014 at 3:04 am

Fun fact: the font for the word Zombie was stolen by Blizzard to make their first logo.
Apparently it’s kind of a love letter to the game that made them want to be game developers.
    Ahhh…now i want that old Blizzard…

Finally met James and Mike at RetroCon over the weekend. Cool ass dudes!

  • September 29, 2014 at 6:24 am

The backwards flying plane looks to be a harrier jet, which would explain the hovering and reverse.

  • Johan Öberg

    September 29, 2014 at 7:24 am

He says “munen” which means regrettable, so he’s not cursing really

  • Kent Gissing

    September 29, 2014 at 7:45 am

You forgot to mention that in addition to barfing lava, he’s also shooting eyeballs at enemies……. o.O

  • Joker83

    September 29, 2014 at 8:04 am

What? In all my years I have NEVER heard of this game. It was released In the US? This game is so crazy!

  • September 29, 2014 at 8:08 am

  • Vulch

    September 29, 2014 at 8:10 am

maaaan, I loved Blossom!!! Tried to watch it everytime))

  • September 29, 2014 at 8:18 am

Insane difficulty, I recommend Gamecenter CX episode where they play and finish this game. It’s subbed on youtube

  • September 29, 2014 at 8:46 am

I love how the intro says he’s there to save the world, but all you do is kill everyone.

  • boboboc

    September 29, 2014 at 8:49 am

dead head says 無念- munen, it means regret

  • frostare

    September 29, 2014 at 9:47 am

4:49 Oh Mike, just look up “Mushihimesama” or “Touhou” on Youtube.

  • September 29, 2014 at 10:03 am

When the head dies it doesn’t curse, but says “munen”, which in everyday Japanese could indicate something “regrettable” or “mortifying”. In Buddhist terminology, however, this word has quite the opposite meaning, being used to describe the state of mind of one having no regrets or desires (and being therefore close to enlightment).

  • September 29, 2014 at 10:05 am

Shout out to The Spoony One, LORD OF TEKKEN!

do yourself a favor and check out his old reveiw of this(or he will air juggle your ass)

  • September 29, 2014 at 12:37 pm

The label on the cart is so misleading, haha!

    September 29, 2014 at 1:07 pm

You didn’t even get to see the epic boss in the New York stage?
Go back and try again until you do. You’ll enjoy it.

Yes, the lasers are death. Avoid those. Grab the guys falling from buildings.

  • September 29, 2014 at 1:13 pm

James, the translation for the word that you were asking about when the character dies (無念/mu-nen) expresses regret, sadness, or something deplorable, regrettable or frustrating. I wouldn’t call it vulger, though. 🙂

  • September 29, 2014 at 3:36 pm

Nice one, playing something strange for a change. 😉
By the way @Mike: I really respect and like you, but the Germany joke was infantile and untoward, even from a U.S. perspective. Sorry, but that´s how I feel about it.

  • September 29, 2014 at 4:03 pm

You want bullet hell on the NES? The Guardian Legend. A great game except for the final boss that deals way too much damage and has nigh’ unavoidable attacks.

  • September 29, 2014 at 4:50 pm

I’d really enjoy it if you guys played Zombies Ate My Neighbors sometime

  • September 29, 2014 at 5:01 pm

Nice review and I need help with something, what are the names of the movies in the beginning of your review on Monster Madness: Halloween Curse of Michael Myers? I just really want to find out the movie titles so I can watch them.

  • September 29, 2014 at 5:14 pm

this doesn’t have anything to do with the episode but I just found out a new godzilla game is coming out soon on PS3.. i’m not sure if or when it will hit the US but it will be out in december in japan

  • September 29, 2014 at 5:43 pm

This game isn’t hard at all. The reason why they’re dying quickly is because they keep hitting the lightening bolts and those drain all your health

  • Paulballsftw

    September 29, 2014 at 6:17 pm

I just had to comment on this video. I have the best idea for the head if made into a movie. Think of The Witches of Eastwick with Jack Nicholson when he was going crazy and looked messed up. I could see him playing the head floating around distroying the city. There was even a part in the movie where his head was large and looking into the window.

I know the perfect Actor for the role of the severed head.

The honor goes to NICOLAS CAGE!

How many sitcom theme songs can Mike sing? He seems to bust out into one at any moment sometimes lol.

  • September 30, 2014 at 12:03 pm

Have you guys ever played call of the dead?

  • johnpseudo

    September 30, 2014 at 4:15 pm

I believe Mike actually played the little brother in Blossom 😉 Loved the series back in the day and stil do. It just screams 90s …

  • Thraen

    September 30, 2014 at 4:16 pm

I rented this game as a kid and I’m surprised you guys didn’t notice the little guys screaming “Help!” are actually the power-ups; I also played Rampage as a kid and I just assumed this.

Also, looking at a FAQ, seems you can actually take unlimited hits if you’re saavy enough to avoid getting hit once the music changes to the “near death” music and then back, which refills your health.

Perhaps just Mike can revisit the game and show us how badass he can be at the game once he better understands the mechanics 🙂

    • Thraen

      September 30, 2014 at 4:18 pm

Note you need to collect the little guys, not kill them. And also I think that’s what the meter is for in the bottom-right, to indicate how many people you rescued and thus your firepower level.

    September 30, 2014 at 9:53 pm

Was thinking about getting this game while back. But after seeing the price I just gave up right there.

  • October 3, 2014 at 5:13 am

The show Game Center CX challenged the game a few years ago. It was a dismal beginning, but through using the Konami Code and the Co-op feature with the game, along with beating the hardest level first and defeating Macho Man Paul Bunyan, they beat the game. http://www.gamingcx.com/2011/11/gamecenter-cx-episode-67-zombie-nation.html. Kacho on!

“Whoa” in stereo! Where on Earth did you guys find that monstrosity? I’ve never played as a giant, disembodied, lava barfing, undead head, and I’m not sure I want to. Thanks for the video.

  • October 12, 2014 at 8:21 am

What do you mean you never saw so many projectiles in a game? Try a game like icaruga and you will see what i mean. For the nes standarts though its pretty messed i believe.

Another game with misleading cover art. I’m so glad I never rented this in my NES days but I don’t think any of my stores had this one
