AVGN MOVIE – Reviews and Interviews (Updated 9/30/2014)

James / September 2nd, 2014

Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie just finished its theatrical run, from historical theaters like the Egyptian and Colonial, film festivals like Fantasia, conventions from Comic Con to PAX, and venues all across North America. Soon will be the time for the rest of the world to see it!

With its online release right around the corner, I’ve decided to round up all the reviews so far, that I’ve seen of it. This is every single one that has come to my attention. Spoilers are noted, however I could have missed some, so look out. I know a lot of people like to see movies fresh, without any outside impressions. You can read them, if you like, or wait until you see the movie (it’ll be here in less than 24 hours). The choice is yours.

UPDATE: I’ve been adding more links since the Vimeo On Demand release.

    • Lukas Sprehn

      September 2, 2014 at 1:30 am

Yes it is. It was confirmed by Kevin Finn on Twitter. It’s going up om Vimeo On Demad. Here’s a link to the platform, http://vimeo.com/ondemand/

      • September 2, 2014 at 2:10 am

I hope the movie and the game find their way on GOG, and i’m weird buffer issues with vimeo and i can’t watch half of the video sometimes.

Oh goodness, you featured my silly Nintendo game blog! Thanks so much!

Bear McCreary’s “Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” is now available at iTunes:
Amazing music! Only one minor critiscm, and that is that there isn’t a full orchestral version of the AVGB theme song. It would have been cool to hear that. It would have been like John Williams’ “Raider’s March” aka the Indiana Jones theme. Otherwhise the soundtrack is fantastic! One of Bear’s best ever.

    • Lukas Sprehn

      September 2, 2014 at 1:29 am

      Meant AVGN and not AVGB.

    • September 2, 2014 at 7:56 am

      It’s also on Spotify!

I’ve got one more for you. Here’s a review from Blu-ray.com

    • September 2, 2014 at 9:43 am

you didn’t say it had spoilers!
I just read a minor spoiler!
It’s ok, dude, it’s not much, and I stopped reading after that, but please give a warning when linking to spoilers. James did, I was hoping commentators would do the same

  • September 2, 2014 at 2:17 am

    I’m surprised that I don’t see a link here:

  • September 2, 2014 at 3:46 am

Less than 24 hours? (clutches chest and drops to the floor)
I’d say I’m going to watch it right away, but have promised my daughter I will wait until Friday to watch it with her! (Let’s see how long I will last….. I will say until the download hits 100%) I have a feeling your servers my cough and fall over at release time! either that or they will have to get more hamsters on wheels at your ISP!

Well done James and all those there at cinemassacre! I await a (hopefully) region free blu ray.

P.S. will you announce this with a video on youtube as all the cinemassacre posts get pushed to my phone and I don’t want to be last in the que!

    • September 2, 2014 at 4:13 am

      Where is it?!

    • Lukas Sprehn

      September 2, 2014 at 5:48 am

No reason to worry about James’ servers, because the movie is going to be available through Vimeo.com’s on-demand platform Vimeo On Demand. Here’s a link http://www.vimeo.com/ondemand/

      • September 2, 2014 at 6:46 am

I can’t wait to see it!
I even took a free day just for this.
        Where is it?! XD

      • Lukas Sprehn

        September 2, 2014 at 10:13 am

The cool thing about Vimeo is not just its professional community and superior player with better image quality with the ability to upload a file of practically any size. It’s also the ability to download the video, and not just the video, but the original file that was used to upload a video (including VODs). It’s the uploader who decides whether that option should be available though, but I hope that it will be 🙂

      • September 2, 2014 at 10:17 am

Cheers Lukas I spotted your post before and quickly registered! I think he should worry, I am refreshing this and Vimeo every 15 seconds or so at the moment! lol

  • September 2, 2014 at 8:07 am

    I’m sitting here (Germany 2:06 PM) and keep on refreshing cinemassacre.com since 6 hours now 🙂 -> 🙁 -> 😐 -> 🙂

    The wait is killing me!

I might have a silly question though, as I’m not familiar with Vimeo. If I buy the movie, can I watch it as many times as I like?

  • September 2, 2014 at 9:23 am

Question, does Vimeo allow to download the movie once i purchase it?
I’m not going to rent it, I’m totally going to BUY IT!

    • September 2, 2014 at 9:40 am

I guess it depends on the options that James will release it.

      • September 2, 2014 at 9:45 am

        I created a Vimeo account! 😀
And it looks like on demand videos should have a a download if you buy it, which i will 🙂

  • September 2, 2014 at 9:39 am

omg omg omg! I was waiting so long for this moment, I can’t wait for the movie to go live!

Downloading it right now. I bought a copy, and cannot wait to watch it. Thank you for all your hard work, James. May the future remain bright for all future projects, and for all good things to come your way in your personal life. 🙂

i’ve been using this site for years but was too timid to create an account. now i guess i have a reason to since my website was mentioned in the reviews list (thereviewbin.com). my site is out of date as far as aesthetics but I still try to keep up the movie reviews. i hope mine came across as fair. i’m a huge fan of James…appearing in the Chicago auditions video is a highlight for me. Cheers, everyone, and thanks for reading if you did!

I enjoyed watching the film; many of these reviews are spot on. The movie has “James Rolfe” written all over it. Many frequent visitors/fans of this very web site will appreciate what the movie offers.

It has been such a blast to follow James to this point in his life. I adore the nerd and I adore the person within. I hope he finally gets to sit down with his Family and take time to breathe in all the success in his life. It’s been a blast and I can’t wait to follow him for the rest of his career. Congratulations James!

Thank you for all the hard work and amazing craftsman ship you have put into this web-series and film. you’re truly an inspiration.

  • September 3, 2014 at 6:25 am

This was worth every moment of waiting! Brilliantly constructed, written, directed! Thank you James, This gives the fans MORE than what they wanted! Bring on the blu-ray! I need 1080p!…. then when is the 4k release? 😉

  • September 3, 2014 at 2:47 pm

Just posted my review on youtube. Absolutely loved the movie everyone ! Very well done Cinemassacre

I thought the movie was good. Not familiar with B movies, so I don’t really have anything to compare it to.

My biggest complaint is with the fan clips at the beginning. Some of them are obviously stretched, and I hated that. Thankfully those weren’t scattered throughout the movie like the portable camera clips in Halloween: Resurrection (which ruined the entire movie for me).

I’m not sure if you’re aware, I reviewed the film on my blog! http://conmanatthemovies.com/2014/09/03/2014-movie-reviews-angry-video-game-nerd-the-movie/

I’d rather had seen a simpler movie with a clever edgy script, with a drunkass and badass nerd with his regular glasses, with Mike Matei as his sidekick Motherfucker Mike (you know, the guy who saved James and this website from oblivion and actually gathered his own fans). Instead we got a unfunny Disney Channel like movie that tries too hard, has a stylized glasses goody two shoes Nerd, with a Generic Sidekick #1 obviously superimposed over the Nerd’s lair. AVGN’s fans who like grew up playing the old NES are adults, not 13 year olds anymore. I don’t enjoy this kind of boring, badly edited movie.
