Yes, the age old story of kid’s frog escapes and you find an underground system and a tank to explore it! Fun game, I got pretty far, but I think it has limited continues so I stopped playing after having gotten so far and having to restart. I think there was a two, but I’ve never played it either, I don’t know anyone who has. You guys need to track it down!

Nice video, looking forward to part two.

    September 1, 2014 at 12:39 am

Played this game when I was a kid. A nice Blast from the past.

  • September 1, 2014 at 12:43 am

Second boss…dude, just pause the game when you shoot it, and if you pause in the middle of it taking damage, it will continue to take damage while paused. Leave it paused for about 30 seconds, and it is an easy win. I know that works for the 4th boss too.

    • generalleoff

      September 1, 2014 at 12:52 am

it works for most of the bosses. I think only 2 or 3 don’t work. The final boss had dead zones where he can not hit you.

  • generalleoff

    September 1, 2014 at 12:50 am

the overhead view mode of this game is the same engine used in Festers Quest. Even uses the same basic weapon upgrades. This game is far better though.

you don’t need to do weird geometry to hit offside enemys. use your grenades.

      September 4, 2014 at 1:43 am

I was actually saying that to the screen…then I remembered they can’t hear me. I played this on my Wii U’s Virtual Console. It’s still hard and still very fun. Here’s a question; does anyone hate stage 5 as much as I do?

I’ve never seen James look more delighted than when he says, “Fuck that vagina,” at the end of this video.

“Most vaginas don’t have fangs” – Mike 2014

Seeing the title the first thing i though was the rasta moment Stevie Wonder had. Yes, that song.

This is a real classic, i mean look at that, the NES game was sooo good, it had so novelty to videogames in general, hey some of the things this game does still aren’t done today, so there’s that.

The sequel on the genesis is ok and so i the Wii one, the rest is shit, but they don’t come near one mile to this.

    September 1, 2014 at 3:49 am

Can’t wait to see you guys fight the giant lobster boss at the end of Area 5. That boss was the bane of my existence when I was a kid, and you can’t use the pause trick on him either.

    • September 11, 2014 at 7:29 pm

Just face him with full gun powerups stand at the bottom of the screen and keep shooting ๐Ÿ™‚

  • September 1, 2014 at 12:14 pm

aww i was having fun watching you play this game but then the video ended. glad your doing a part 2 cuz this game looks kewl and I was having fun watching but i would like it better if you just made whole half hour videos. ten minutes feels more like half a episode ๐Ÿ™ i really loved this video and its going to suck waiting a week for the other half of the video. please think about this. Make longer videos. i love watching you play video games and hearing you talk. watching james and mike mondays are the high light of my week every week so please make the episodes longer. please and thank you

Great video guys. One of my best accomplishments was actually beating this game as a kid…but holy crap was it hard as freaking balls! My first time I did it with the NES max (very helpful on the final boss) but then I went back and did it with a regular NES controller. The lack of a password/save feature and the fact that the game was prone to bugging out and leaving your stuck (fuck you Glitch Gremlin!!!) made it even more frustrating. Still an incredible classic…looking forward to seeing you finish the game (I anticipate a lot of cursing and thrown controllers though)!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

$5? You got ripped off. Only worth $3 even with today’s inflated prices.

    September 1, 2014 at 3:02 pm

Word for Mike. I know James is really busy right now because of the movie, but recent J&M Mondays are way too short (5-10 minutes), come on, cant you spent 15 min playing on one siting ? Walktrough of Batman was awesome, more Mondays like this one please.

  • hhank

    September 1, 2014 at 3:12 pm

ps. i mean I know you guys are playing a lot longer to make one video, they are too short tho. im sorry if this comment seems offensive, it wasnt my intention to do that.

  • September 1, 2014 at 4:10 pm

I just bought Blastem Master on Virtual Console. I can say it definitely is worth the price.

    September 1, 2014 at 5:50 pm

Great game, the intro music is classic and hypnotic. Will you and Mike ever play Shadowgate the remake as part of a series, or what not. That would be awesome! The game is quite enjoyable

  • September 1, 2014 at 7:06 pm

I thought you guys were gonna do Legend of Zelda…

  • Don Skiver

    September 1, 2014 at 7:46 pm

No mention of the fucking AWESOME music in this game?? I am disappoint. But still…at least you guys are finally acknowledging this game, so that’s a plus. I’m eager to see part 2 next week.

  • pikmintaro

    September 1, 2014 at 10:23 pm

I think they changed the story of the game from the original Japanese version where you are fighting in a war on a planet somewhere, whereas in the english version the kid’s Frog simply mutates and then he randomly finds the tank at the bottom of the hole for some reason..

Anyways I’ve played this one a little bit in the past, but mostly the Blaster Master I’ve played is the one on PS1 that I found in a bargain bin about a decade ago, I enjoyed it, but I never finished it (yet) unfortunately.

I LOVE this game. Let me repeat that again, I LOVE this game. So difficult, yet so gratifying.

    September 2, 2014 at 2:03 am

That’s a pretty cool game for its time. Pity it came before automaps or even regular in game maps were standard. It’s actually still a pretty cool concept, because the vehicle parts aren’t just tacked on sequences, or isolated stages, but a good portion of the gameplay.

When I was in school, I used to stare out the bus window on the way home and pretend the blaster master car was out there keeping up with the bus. It would made jumps to get over things like fences, and would ramp off inclines. Depending on the weather, the correct level music would play. Since I live far up north, it was normally the cold stage music. That was ok, it’s my favorite.

Strangely enough, I don’t remember playing this game a as kid. As James said, it wasn’t easy for some to own a ton of Nintendo games as kids, unless it was a special game or occasion. I owned most of the football games and the Mario Bros. series, but other than “Castlevania”, “Contra”, and “Zelda II: The Adventure of Link” I did the weekend rental deal as well.

  • September 2, 2014 at 11:58 am

Nice game so far, now do me a favour and play some KABUKI QUANTUM FIGHTER. Thanks in advance!

btw the way james you press down and B to use your weapons.

  • Vernon Schaal

    September 3, 2014 at 3:31 pm

down in B, or up and B one of the 2 fires your extra weapons.

  • September 3, 2014 at 10:29 pm

One of the hardest games I ever completed on the NES when it was new. One of the last stages has this kickass speed-metal music track to it that I loved when I first got there.

  • September 8, 2014 at 12:14 pm

One of my all time favorite NES games! As a kid I made it to the final boss a couple of times, but could never beat him. It’s a frustrating boss battle. The soundtrack is amazing! Typical of SUNSOFT. Another typical SUNSOFT theme were those over head stages. Fester’s Quest, Blaster Master and Gremlins, are all using the same graphics engine to do these over head view stages.

All right! This is another one that I played as a kid that took years to finally beat. Thanks for doing this. It’s gonna be great!

    • skwij

      September 11, 2014 at 7:08 am

This one was rough, too. There aren’t any extra lives and limited continues. I think the only way I ever beat it was with the NES Advantage… Great video. I hope you get far!

  • September 11, 2014 at 7:26 pm

Good review of an excellent game from my childhood. In case you guys didn’t know, there’s a glitch that lets you kill a lot the bosses with one grenade. If you pause the game just as you toss a grenade at the boss it will keep registering a hit, leave the game paused for like 20 seconds then unpause and boss will be dead. Doesn’t work on all bosses. Should work on the “vaginas with teeth” and the frog bosses. Be careful though, the glitch works on you too, if you pause the game when you take damage, you’ll keep getting hit while the game is paused.
I was lucky enough to beat this game as a kid and it’s hard as fuck. Looking forward to part 2. Keep up the good work guys.

  • September 12, 2014 at 3:47 am

you guys are terrible at this game. Big fan though

teeth gaina man why is it upside down lol

  • September 14, 2014 at 8:31 am

I hear all the time people that you have buy a game but you never really play that and i dont understand it.Its like you are saying whatever i will have it there siting in my shelve, and some day i might turn on the system and play it? Those cartridges were pretty expensive back in the day and i can only assume one thing, your parents giving you a good pocket money to spend. It reminds me allot when the first playstation when they put mod chips that we buying games and just had them there collecting dust and in the end from the 300 title we have buy played only the 20.But this was diferent since the copy’s were much cheaper from the originals.Since then i learned my lesson and when i am paying for something i know i am gonna play it,not only having it on my collection to justify my self as a collector but also as a gamer.Thing that makes me wonder people, have you desided what you really are? gamers, collectors, reviewers?

  • September 30, 2014 at 1:20 pm

You only have to hit the boss once with the grenade and then pause the game. Wait a bit and unpause the game and the boss would be instantly dead. You are welcome.
