    • Weldin Dunn

      July 7, 2014 at 2:13 am

Genesis does! (16 bit RPG) You can’t do this on Nintendo! Genesis, does! Genesis, does! Genesis, does! Genesis! Genesis, does!

Better? Poor hit detection and bad controls anyone?

  • Weldin Dunn

    July 7, 2014 at 2:11 am

Oh I remember this. I love this game, but it was kind of glitchy. You could also cheat, like with the whip on the wall, or climbing the wall o get away from enemies. Great game. Also AWESOME!!!!!!! MIKE’S GAME GLITCHES!!!!! It’s been a while. One more thing, early happy birthday James! Only 3 days right?

  • Wally

    July 7, 2014 at 2:45 am

Great video, the sega master system version was co-op. I’ve spent the last 2 days playing Double Dragon II on my 3DS using save states to make my way through the game. Great game until it became a plateformer in the middle. Cool to see Mikes Gliches again. Hopefully next week; Double Deagon II

  • July 7, 2014 at 3:07 am

I want to see James & Mike play Zelda: a link to the past, whole game with commentary!

    • oscuro

      July 7, 2014 at 12:24 pm

Double dragon was one of my favorite games as a kid. I beat the machine guy once at my grandparents house and I was super hyped because that guy was like impossible

  • K6CTX

    July 7, 2014 at 3:14 am

I could never get into this game, it just kicked my dick in every time.

  • Yellow Exorcist

    July 7, 2014 at 3:29 am

Great video guys! I really liked the preview of Mike’s new video and when you did the thing at the end, when you’re running opposite sides πŸ˜€

  • Rennie Page

    July 7, 2014 at 3:36 am

I love you guys. You bring back the memories like crazy and do it in style. Laughed my ass off at the end with the cross screen run. But I also played this game as a child and found it intensely frustrating.

  • metalcommand

    July 7, 2014 at 3:57 am

Why is Super Double Dragon always overlooked? It had more moves, more enemies, more weapons and better graphics than it’s NES predecessor. I never got into the first one, but loved the SNES version.

    • stephen mccord

      July 7, 2014 at 4:33 am

The game was just way to cheap, like the double dragon III kind of cheap, it just wasn’t a fun experience.

      • metalcommand

        July 7, 2014 at 5:50 am

To me and my brother it was. How is it not fun? It’s not as cheap as part 1 to 3, with looping levels, dropping stuff and cheap enemies.

      • Teem-k

        July 7, 2014 at 4:53 pm

I now that James hate Double Dragon III, but i really love it, it was one of the most liked NES games in our city when i was in school.

  • July 7, 2014 at 4:16 am

For some reasons i’m kinda bummed i started with a SNES, but hey at the least in the SNES they introduced the difficulty select so i don’t feel as bummed that i missed some classic hardcore like this.
Heck Nintendo consoles have really hard games even today, when i got time, i still have to finish Braverly Default, Tropical Freeze hard mode and Wonderful 101. These last games i mentioned are not impossibile, but they require a lot of time and 100% understanding and mastering the controls or/and mechanics.

But this episode was juicy, James must love this game a lot to try so many times to do it.
Mike, after the first try, you were like: keep me away from this or i’ll cry.

Second favorite episode after Toejam & Earl.

  • July 7, 2014 at 4:16 am

They should have a homebrew version of this game for they can use the versus mode sprites in the actual game

  • Marky Johnson 9/30/82

    July 7, 2014 at 5:14 am

Thats funny I just thru playing Double Dragon II earlier today.

  • meanspirit

    July 7, 2014 at 5:14 am

Great video! It would have been awesome if you managed to complete it but maybe another time. Speaking of which, it would be really cool if you managed to revisit and beat Toejam and Earl. That’s gotta be the best James and Mike video so far for me.

  • Pablo1989

    July 7, 2014 at 6:05 am

Yea Introductionn of this game are legengary :P, and my friend joking someday,

  • Glorious Gerbil

    July 7, 2014 at 7:49 am

Good episode! James and mikes gaming videos are way better than AVGN these days, So much more interesting seing you actually play and talk about the game in normal tone instead of the cursing and acting! Keep doing thsese forever!

    July 7, 2014 at 9:41 am

The Master System version is waaay better than that but the NES version has his appeal. I always wondered how a game could be named DOUBLE Dragon and don’t have the two players on the screen. The more aggravating factor for me was that I played Double Dragon 2 and the MS version before I played this one. Anyway, you guys could play Mighty Final Fight someday.

  • Podo

    July 7, 2014 at 10:03 am

Play Castlevania 64. It deserves a James & Mike play episode since in the Nerd episode, the nerd was just being a lying stupid jackass in his review of it. He like didn’t pay attention to anything and straight up lied about the game, insulting it for no good reason. He should play it on James & Mike play so the game can get a fair chance, cuz I love the game

  • July 7, 2014 at 10:43 am

The last 15 sec, so funny…

  • Arjak

    July 7, 2014 at 11:27 am

WHAT!? I was supposed to go into the holes left by the Abobo twins this whole time!? I just thought the level was super-long!

    Screw this port!

    July 7, 2014 at 12:08 pm

at 1:04 there is a 2 player selection. How did you miss this?

  • dacalo

    July 7, 2014 at 12:32 pm

I got this game with my NES back in late 80’s when I was 10. Tough game but managed to beat it. I miss NES era games when they were tough as hell. Frustrating too, but it was just so rewarding and beating a game actually felt like an accomplishment.

    July 7, 2014 at 12:39 pm

    Awesome video!

  • July 7, 2014 at 12:53 pm

Lucky me, I had the Double Dragon arcade experience! Worth the money, but the NES-version is also great!

  • Althar

    July 7, 2014 at 1:05 pm

End of the video made me laugh with the Abobos. Also reminded me of Abobo’s Big Adventure, you should play that next!

  • July 7, 2014 at 1:58 pm

26:15 You successfully recreated the end of Rocky III!

  • July 7, 2014 at 3:37 pm

Yeah… I refreshed the page and received a 4 1/2 minute ad of some jacked up guy with no skip option after 5 seconds. I recommend you fix it before too many people complain. I’m on Chrome, btw.

  • July 7, 2014 at 3:45 pm

I wonder if that black NES controller is an original.

  • Orionsaint

    July 7, 2014 at 4:39 pm

Sega Master System version was better and had two player coop, but it flickered a lot.

  • Joker83

    July 7, 2014 at 4:50 pm

This was one of the best videos! I laughed SO fucking hard at the tense part with James vs the two Abobos and James saying he would really die if he lost and Mike covered his eyes, that was AMAZING
This video was so great and brought me back to being 6 or 7 years old and playing this game all the time.
Guess what, I was one of the people who didn’t realize you were supposed to enter the cave in level 3… You guys definitely got way farther than I’ve ever seen in this video.
Also, Bootsys old school gamer skills are starting to become a bit legendary. Any chances we can see some Bootsy centric videos where he gets rowdy like he did in the Indiana Jones video. Maybe he can show those Ninja Guiden birds a thing or two.
Thanks so much for the video guys, this totally saved my day

    July 7, 2014 at 8:06 pm

14:27 – too funny! I’ve had so many video game reactions like that, James! Most of them on NES.

  • July 7, 2014 at 8:46 pm

I played double dragon i think first in the arcades, and then on GB and was so freaking hard, but seems that the famicom version is harder. Also look those graphics on the VS mode, are those guys serious? they could do much better job probably in the entire game making it also co.op.Why to be like that on VS and not on a cooperative play? Anyway good show as always, get you later.

  • Don Skiver

    July 7, 2014 at 9:04 pm

Fifty-thousand?! You got fifty-thousand on Double Dragon?!
I thoroughly enjoy these long-plays you guys do, I wish you guys would do them more often.

  • July 7, 2014 at 10:52 pm

450+ second ad of some jerkoff rambling. You are fucking shitting me right.

  • Jedorian

    July 7, 2014 at 11:18 pm

Sweet! Only had to refresh the page four times before it finally skipped the ad that lasts FOREVER.

  • greendublin

    July 8, 2014 at 12:09 am

One of the best J&MM yet! Fighting those abobos with 0 health was intense! Gritting teeth for a full minute. And a great ending.

  • gorgoroth901

    July 8, 2014 at 12:37 am

When I was a kid I actually thought the Wizard was a good movie. When I got a little older and saw it again, I was like, “What the fuck is this shit?”

  • gluserty

    July 8, 2014 at 12:40 am

Really takes me back to memories of this game. I was cracking up when James and Mike were running with Abobo; yep, remember doing that as well!

  • July 8, 2014 at 1:27 am

I look forward to Mondays so much for this stuff. This brings back such great, nostalgic memories of my cousin and I hanging out. Double Dragon is a classic and sounds of the game mixed with the frantic mashing of both A and B buttons gives me butterflies. haha Thanks a lot you guys. Keep it up. πŸ˜€

  • July 8, 2014 at 1:36 am

You need to play master system version.

  • Tross

    July 8, 2014 at 2:15 am

Wow. Who ever heard of a weapon that’s so useless, you’re better off using your fists? The rest of the game appears to be your typical retro affair, which is difficult and often frustrating, but is also quite rewarding when you’re able to do better on a playthrough, and especially rewarding if you beat it.

  • AbareKiller

    July 8, 2014 at 8:56 am

Great video, will definitely be watching this one again. I’m not sure I ever beat this one as a kid either, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying.

  • Glorious Gerbil

    July 8, 2014 at 9:36 am

I remember a cousin had this, although i think it was the master system version (not sure though memory is a bit hazy these days). Only played it a few times as a kid when i was over but i can remember it was brilliant fun

  • Aaron1375

    July 8, 2014 at 2:14 pm

I’ve won the game once or twice, but that wall is usually what finishes me off as well. This episode was very funny, but I was surprised that you mentioned the film “The Wizard”, but no mention of the super horrible film, “Double Dragon”.

  • July 8, 2014 at 5:13 pm

The only copy of Double Dragon I ever played was the home version on my Atari 2600

  • Mercury7182

    July 8, 2014 at 7:48 pm

You can just “walk” through it

  • legacy81

    July 8, 2014 at 8:12 pm

i never knew to go in the caves…i used to run out of time on this level over and over again. those stupid Abobo’s would kick my ass fighting bcausethey would keep reappearing. FINALLY, one day i tried to go in the caves and it worked… dontknw why it took me so long to figure that out…this game used to piss me off cuz i could neverget passed that one level so i guess i sopped playing it for a long time.

  • July 8, 2014 at 10:08 pm

How about 2 games on the ps2. I recommend the the rockstar game Bully and the THQ game series Destroy all humans( 1 and 2 that is).

  • barlitone

    July 9, 2014 at 12:16 am

This version is OK and all, but to me, you just can’t beat the Atari 2600 port. Simple controls: move, attack, get killed. The game practically plays itself.

  • July 9, 2014 at 6:50 pm

You guys gotta play the Gameboy advance version of this, besides the original arc it’s the best version of DD ever?..Yes ever.

  • July 9, 2014 at 6:59 pm

This game really has a way of bringing out that horribly frustrated and super emo kid in you. It’s like the ultimate test of your self control. Some games punk you pretty hard to where you just wanna quit, but this game gives you just enough chance to make you think you can win right before it smashes your dreams. As a kid the game was the most intense thing on the planet. I remember parents pulling their children away from the tv after playing this game.It was really hard not to take the game personally when it kept virtually kicking your ass. Even though I Finally conquered it a few months ago I get major flashbacks from the hardcore rage it gave me as a kid.

  • July 9, 2014 at 7:10 pm

You guys need to get on

  • nammm3

    July 9, 2014 at 11:52 pm

I was eating some chicken wings while watching this and while James had no life left and fighting both of the Abobos… I completely stopped eating and was hoping you’d get out of it. Great video guys!

  • July 10, 2014 at 3:35 pm

James is wearing one of the greatest shirts of one of the greatest albums of one of the greatest bands ever to play heavy metal. PANTERA

  • Ace

    July 10, 2014 at 7:08 pm

In the arcade version, I remember finishing the game almost exclusively by using the elbow punch, including for machine gun guy, as the baddies seemed to have no answer for it. Never played the NES version so not sure how the port handled the move.

This video was one of the most entertaining have ever seen on the site and had everything: Action, Suspense, Drama, and Comedy! James and Mike’s genuine reactions are great to watch, hope you keep making these!

  • July 10, 2014 at 7:37 pm

    Happy birthday James!

  • Quiltface

    July 12, 2014 at 9:33 pm

Got me in the mood to bust this out… crazy how it goes from 1-10 in difficulty in a matter of 1 stage. Jimmy Lees arm in the cart pic looks like a fat lady’s thigh.

  • July 12, 2014 at 9:42 pm

Nerd…can u PLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS do a review of double dragon for the snes, greetings from germany. love your show

  • DanteAlexander

    July 16, 2014 at 1:54 am

My cousins and I would do that same goofy stuff on the 2 player vs. mode.
Nice to that stuff is still funny to this day. I didn’t know I needed to laugh that hard till it happened. Thanks!

  • July 18, 2014 at 12:54 pm

    You just walk across!?

  • July 23, 2014 at 11:34 pm

Is it just me or does Mike seem like he was one of those kids who’d get super pissed off if he died and he’d blame it on anyone else in the room and probably whine whenever it was his turn to play.
