Bayou Billy / Punisher – AVGN & Pat the NES Punk

Mike Matei / July 3rd, 2014

Special Bonus video! The Angry Video Game Nerd teams up with Pat the NES Punk to review two NES games: A bad Konami game (really?!) BAYOU BILLY and an okay LJN game THE PUNISHER.

This is NOT an AVGN episode. It is a special bonus video, as it is not a Cinemassacre-produced video. It was written and edited by Pat, and was a real funny concept. You can tell I’m trying hard not to laugh the whole time.

Snice dude! I actually loved both games as a kid but Bayou Billy is too damn unforgiving, and punisher was a fun time until the monotony took over!

We pronounce it buy-u down here, not this buy-o you speak of.

Maybe it’s his Jersey accent, him playing the associal nerd character. Associal nerds often don’t know how to pronounce words correctly. Seriously. So it may be a joke. Remember when the Nerd said “Grand Prix” as “Grand Pricks” ? Then he said “Yeah, I know it’s “Pree” but it looks like “Pricks.” May also just be a play on the word and the Nerd’s foul-mouthery, or both. Or he’s parodying the commercial, because to me it sounds like the actor is saying “Bio” there too. At least it sounds like that to me. The audio is very muffled on the version of the ad that I found on YouTube.

    July 3, 2014 at 1:46 pm

Entertaining, but some of the gags were a little too forced maybe (even if that’s supposed to be the joke, it’s distracting that we see you trying to be funny, which is very out of character for the AVGN, who is usually funny because of himself, not voluntarily). Still a nice video though.

Very mediocre episode by your standards, could just as well have been a “James and Pat Play”. I expected to at least see you try each others games, ie Pat play Bayou Billy, James playing Punisher and then admit to faults in Bayou Billy and quality in Punisher, something like that. Instead both just did their own thing.
Sorry for being a dick, everyone.
    Looking forward to the movie.

try and make an avgn episode where the nerd reviews thomas the tank engine and friends on snes and sega mega drive (or genesis as named in America as I’m british).

    • Lior Gal

      September 13, 2014 at 7:18 am

I looked through his SNES and Genesis collection pages, and, apparently, he actually Has the Thomas games (unless these are Mike’s collections). Plus, in the one on Genesis, he could play as James. That would actuslly be very similar to the time when he drank Rolling Rock on the Roll ‘N Rocker.

Nerd… Spoony beat you to the punch on Bayou Billy… about 8 years ago.
Average episode with a couple of laughs. And nice blatant advertisement of the movie. We get it, you want people to go see it, and we all will eventually.

  • July 3, 2014 at 4:19 pm

Bayou Billy doesn’t suck and doesn’t deserve the avgn treatment.

    • thrillkilljunky

      July 4, 2014 at 12:45 am

      Riiight…..but Mike is funny right?

    • July 4, 2014 at 4:11 am

I like both but sorry Pat>James. I guess if you’re young and find simple vulgarity funny then yeah James is better but once the word fuck isn’t funny anymore then Pat is better without a doubt.

      • Mike Roberts

        July 4, 2014 at 11:18 am

“I guess if you’re young and find simple vulgarity funny”

Definitely. The adult, intellectual humor of Pat playing with his Donkey Kong dolls is much more mature and sophisticated.

      • July 5, 2014 at 11:15 pm

A small part of his character at best. Almost the entirety of James spiel is profanity. Look like I said I find James funny and I find profanity funny when used in a humorous way. I just don’t find profanity funny for its own sake. It just seems with his more recent videos he is running out of new clever things to say so he falls back on profanity as a crutch.

    July 3, 2014 at 8:50 pm

I love pat the nes punk when he does his flea market madness and his reviews of not too shabby hidden gems. and of course I love the nerd. whether it was funny or not this was great july 4th fun. thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • July 3, 2014 at 9:42 pm

I don’t know, saying that it wasn’t the real NWC cart kinda spoils the ending to that episode to me. I mean like when in a movie a character dies, but in the sequel they show he was only wounded, or the opposite like in Aliens/Alien3. It just spoils it. The NWC review was insanely awesome also because of that ending. This review is fine, but it’s nothing special.
Anyway, since it’s not a canonical episode, I think it might also not be in continuity with the series.
And what’s that about saying “I don’t know what you’re talking about” about the Ninja Gaiden ninja? Like if THAT was out of continuity? Or am I getting something wrong here?

    • Warrax

      July 3, 2014 at 10:04 pm

Yeah I didn’t get why the AVGN denied the Ninja Gaiden part, what’s the reason behind this? might as well not mention it.

  • Night-X

    July 3, 2014 at 10:01 pm

Too bad didn’t have the PUNISHER game at any of the video rental place where I used to live at when I was kid.

  • Warrax

    July 3, 2014 at 10:02 pm

The funny part about Bayou Billy is that the famicom version is much easier and actually doable! just like Castlevania 3 and Ninja Gaiden 3 on famicom. Funny how some games were made harder for the American audience when it’s usually the opposite.

    • July 3, 2014 at 10:53 pm

I remember getting quite far in Bayou Billy just because I had nothing else to play. The jump kick is the key to beating multiply enemies. Just jump kicking em like crazy

Please stop teasing me with the AVGN movie and release it on disk so I can buy it. I live in the middle of nowhere and have no way of buying tickets to watch it anywhere near me. Is it at all possible to pay an Online fee around what ticket sales would be, and watch it on Cinemassacre when it is released. I will likely pay to watch it multiple times over. And is there any way there will be a box set with all the AVGN videos along with the move, I would pay out my ASS for that. I’m sure I’m not the only one one that would like this.

    • Lukas Sprehn

    July 4, 2014 at 1:45 am

Another great crossover review! I guess Pat didn’t end up selling the NWC gold cart after all. I saw him on Pawn Stars trying to sell it, so I figured he would have found another buyer by now, but I guess he decided to keep it after all.

    • Mike Roberts

      July 4, 2014 at 11:20 am

He never intended to sell it. That “reality show,” like most “reality shows” is not real, it’s a hoax. He has a friend who works on the show so he went on there just to get on TV and pretended he wanted to sell it. Basically lied to all the viewers.

      • Tross

        July 5, 2014 at 1:18 am

I hadn’t heard that. Thanks for clearing that up. I was wondering why someone who had that cart would want to part with it, unless they were desperate for the money, and/or weren’t really interested in owning a collector’s item, and Pat is the NES Punk. Pawn Stars didn’t strike me as one of those “hoax” reality tv shows, aside from the fact that the Rick and his family supposedly aren’t at the shop most of the time, unless they’re filming. I had no idea they were pulling publicity stunts, like with Pat.

  • Rick

    July 4, 2014 at 1:51 am

    ‘Big Production’ ahahhahaha…

    …I get it…

    production value…

  • July 4, 2014 at 2:07 am

I look forward to seeing the outtakes of James and Pat losing it and laughing while filming. It looks like they’re about to break character almost every time they are on screen together. I’m sure it was lots of fun to shoot and pulling teeth to edit.

  • July 4, 2014 at 4:04 am

Bye-You or Bye-Jew . It definitely is not Bye-Yo. For sme reason that REALLY bothered me.

    • Andrew Wood

      July 6, 2014 at 1:17 pm

This really annoyed me too, but gives both “bye-you” and “bye-yo.” But other dictionaries only give “bye-you.” So who knows.

  • July 4, 2014 at 7:07 am

Spoony already did Bayou Billy. Actually it was one of his first videoes ever. So I don’t get why that was needed.

  • Glorious Gerbil

    July 4, 2014 at 11:37 am

Pat is a very interesting reviewer but he should do it more natural, He does not need to use this Pat the nes punk character he should rather just try and be more himself without the overdone acting. It would make him so much better.

    • Glorious Gerbil

      July 4, 2014 at 11:45 am

He should not be trying to be a comedian cos he lacks the comedic talent.

      • Andrew Wood

        July 6, 2014 at 1:15 pm

I agree. He’s very bland and awkward. No charm like the AVGN.

This was a complete waste; the Nerd should’ve made Bayou Billy a normal AVGN episode, because I thought a lot of his jokes and commentary were really funny in this. I would’ve liked to see this as a full Nerd episode, with no Pat.

  • July 4, 2014 at 2:36 pm

Seriously the nerd doesn’t like TC surf Design ? I thought he did because he never review it . The cartridge they had at the end Pat was on Pawn Stars just to try and sell it. But if you had been watching Pawn Stars you know they don’t take it

  • July 4, 2014 at 3:20 pm

Ok, next time i’ll avoid Pat the NES Punk.
I don’t even like him but i keep giving him chances.
I know, i shouldn’t have opened this video, maybe really really inside i’m a “servant” who knows?

  • July 4, 2014 at 4:28 pm

That concept with you and Pat was ace! I hope you´ll do it again, some time – or soon, if you both have some spare time! 😉

  • Greekman49

    July 4, 2014 at 7:00 pm

If you can make an AVGN video reviewing the game “Hey you Pikachu” that would be awesome. Ps. Really funny video.

  • July 4, 2014 at 8:47 pm

This video is really funny. The acting on pats part isn’t great but overall this is a good bit of entertainment. The video feels like a fresh take on the avgn concept since pat is doing the editing. Some people are complaining on YouTube but I think its a welcome addition and is just as entertaining as your avgn episodes.

  • July 4, 2014 at 11:54 pm

Another hilarious crossover! These are great. The warm feeling the the LJN rainbow usually brings me is a hot, belching sensation in my stomach. Thanks for the video! The movie looks like it’s gonna be something amazing.

  • Luke Pierson

    July 5, 2014 at 1:01 pm

This had some funny parts but I feel like this stepped away from what the nerd really is. It just seems like they didn’t think to much on it, but I always welcome AVGN.

  • July 5, 2014 at 7:10 pm

The script’s terrible. It has some charm and together you guys make a great duo. But the script is so boring..

    • Andrew Wood

      July 6, 2014 at 1:19 pm

I think the problem is Pat. He said nothing all that funny or creative, and just isn’t a good comedian or actor overall. I actually thought a lot of the Nerd’s lines were pretty funny in this.

      • meanspirit

        July 6, 2014 at 6:50 pm

I was thinking the same thing. Honestly, I even find him annoying when he’s in some of the James & Mike videos. He may be a nice guy but he is pretty boring to listen to.

      • Senna4ever

        July 7, 2014 at 8:08 am

I really think people do not “get the point” of Pat The NES Punk’s character.
He supposed to be stilted, stiff and uncomfortable.
He does bad jokes and puns, points out obvious things, etc.

Where as most reviewers work from a script and try to hide the fact it’s scripted. Pat relishes the script idea and play up to making it sound like he’s working from a script.
        That’s his “thing”.

      • Andrew Wood

        July 8, 2014 at 2:54 am

That’s good to know. However, his forced bad acting doesn’t always seem like it’s on purpose. I think more people would get the point if it was done more properly. The way he does these things just doesn’t come off as being that funny. I can tell when he’s purposely making a bad joke, but he doesn’t make bad jokes the right way, and he doesn’t act awkward and stilted in a way that makes me laugh. I also think his “NES Punk” idea makes him harder to figure out. It’s just not very clear what he’s going for. Bad Luck Bootsy seems similar, but with him it’s more obvious that he’s purposely being a bad, cheesy actor, and it’s usually pretty funny. His name helps with that idea; “NES Punk” is just kind of misleading.

  • Sesquipedal

Really starting to get annoyed by Nerd’s inability to stop smirking. I guess it’s just a product of lack of time to make a proper episode, but this one was a great episode! Just man up and be an angry nerd!

Pat and the Nerd making fun of each other tropes and style of reviewing was a fun setup.

I’m usually not fan of guests in AVGN videos, but I think that Pat seems to work really well with Nerd. I think it’s because he’s a reviewer too so he actually adds to the review instead of just appearing to make it gimmicky, he’s a co-star, not just a cameo.

I really liked the scene at the end, a little bit of a character scene when Pat asks if they’re friends, but I couldn’t help but feel you didn’t know how to move from that scene and finish the video, the ending was too random and it didn’t work too well IMO. Tying it to the movie came off as out of nowhere, it could have been done better.

I liked the video, but I feel it needed to be polished a little more.

Either way, fun video. Hopefully we’ll see more of Pat in the future (I don’t care if the Nerd said they weren’t friends! =P)

I know I’m an asshole for taking the time to log in and post this, but I cant stand Pat “the NES punk”. He’s absolutely terrible. I’m sure he’s a good guy and all and he has a excellent game collection, but goddamn is he annoying and unfunny to a level where I feel embarrassed for him (and you) whenever he shows up on cinemassacre. even my girlfriend leaned over and asked “whos this guy? he sucks” so yeah. grrr. and such.

In other news, bought tix for the AVGN movie in Aug. Cant wait.
