Awesome show and an awesome episode.
I have one question for all Transformers fans: I remember a scene from my childhood in which a beat-up Rodamus finds inanimate Optimus (or was it the other way around?) and gives him a crystal from his chest, which revives him and makes him the leader of the Autobots again. Can someone confirm that this exist and is not just a figment of my imagination, and also tell me which episode this takes place in?

    • June 18, 2014 at 1:19 pm

It was actually in the animated movie… Optimus is dying after an epic fight, rodimus is the only autobot near the dying Optimus and is given the power crystal making rodimus a “prime” and therefore leader of the autobots. But that’s not before rodimus had a hell of a time trying to open the crystal, making one of the most memorable lines in my childhood memory due to the language which was unheard of in the mid 80s… “open damn you!!!”

        June 18, 2014 at 3:10 pm

        Wait…hold up o.o
That is beyond wrong from start to finish lol
#1 I’m assuming this “power crystal” you’re referring to is the Matrix of Leadership, which wasn’t given to Hot Rod (in fact, Hot Rod was the one who got Optimus killed in the first place during said epic fight), it was given to Ultra Magnus.
#2 Ultra Magnus never managed to open the Matrix. He was blown up by Galvatron on Junk after which the Matrix was stolen by Galvatron. Also, the actual line was “Open! Damn it, open!” not “Open damn you!”
#3 Hot Rod eventually became a Prime (Rodimus Prime) by taking the Matrix from Galvatron while within Unicron’s stomach. The only other time Hot Rod ever had the Matrix in his possession was when Optimus was passing it to Ultra Magnus and dropped it, and Hot Rod caught it before it hit the floor (which in itself was a bit of foreshadowing that he was the one meant to hold it, not Ultra Magnus). He just did not become a Prime until the time was right (he had conquered his fears and shortcomings, learned to become a leader and led the Autobots to battle against Unicron) at which point once he took the Matrix from Galvatron it recognized him as the one meant to be it’s wielder.
No offense, but you might want to go back and watch the movie again. Seemed you missed quite a bit of it during your last viewing.

    • June 19, 2014 at 12:34 am

      You are either remembering:

      1) The movie
      2) 3rd season episode “Dark Awakening” in which Optimus is revived by the Quintessons and controlled to destroy the Autobot Army. Optimus takes the Matrix and subsequently is “defeated” (more like surrenders) to Rodimus and later sacrifices himself to end the Quintessons trap.
      3) 3rd season 2-part-finale “The Return of Optimus Prime”. Optimus is saved by human scientists (retconning somewhat his end in Dark Awakening) and his inactive body is infected with hate spores. He is taken to Earth and almost everybody ends up being infected (also Rodimus) but he is revived by a Quintesson and manages to regain the Matrix and cure everybody with the wisdom of it (and in the process emptying it). He becomes once again Leader of the Autobots.

      • June 20, 2014 at 8:22 pm

Sounds to me like “Dark Awakening” too… from the original description. but could also be “Return of Optimus Prime”…

Awesome, I’ve always been the original transformers fan myself.

James & Mike, you put so much work into your videos. The shots you used there made Transformers look like the best cartoon ever. My personal favorite moment is Starscream’s death, like Optimus he was an awesome character, that’s the sad part hehe.

  • June 18, 2014 at 1:58 pm

G1 was great! When at the time i got news of a G2 series coming i was excited to see the series continuing from it’s bitter-sweet end. Then it all turned out to be Beast Wars and it was the end of the moment, how could they do that? The movies promised so much and bummed all of us out, i don’t even want a 4th movie now, i stopped caring about Transformers the 2nd one, and now they announce a new Animated Series for 2015. How we have come to the point that i don’t want any of that, they need to let it fade.

But it’s the new trend, if it was great once you’ll keep doing it forever. Don’t even get me started, this is an argument that could touch annual videogames franchises, Cinema-Comics and much more.

Thanks to my curiosity i’m looking into the good japanese anime that never get localized, the videogames that stand out for gameplay and such of the sort for movies, tv shows ecc ecc.

Comics, them i don’t read anymore. Just Marvel and DC can’t come up with a new character since the 1987 Watchmen, and no Deadpool doesn’t ring as a new thing to me, the first 5 issues where good and original, and with a good bunch of dark humor, then it got a parody of himself, bleh.

Many thanks to my curiosity indeed.

You missed one thing. When Prime and Glavatron shook hands. That was as mind blowing as anything. Two enemy’s showing respect for each other. That was never done before that time that I remember.

    June 18, 2014 at 2:37 pm

Great video. It was so refreshing to see. I watched with great anticipation and enjoyment. It was much like being a kid again.
The reference that you made about the new Devastator was right on. It looks like a big pile of trash. There was nothing wrong with the original. Can they give us old fans more then Peter Cullen voice Optimus Prime? Maybe someday they will get it right.

      June 18, 2014 at 7:16 pm

And if not, there’s the recent Transformers Prime TV show. It has Peter Cullen and Frank Welker reprising their roles as Optimus Prime and Megatron, and the robot designs are much more recognizable, especially with the Decepticons. Might not have as much characters as the original G1, but it’s worth a look and many would definitely agree it’s what the movies should have been.

Well done, James. You picked out just about everything awesome about the Transformers that we grew up on. I also understand how much time it must have taken to select all those clips, so kudos on the edit. Funny, Megatron says both “rust in peace” and “symphony of destruction” he must be a Megadeth fan!

I was also a fan of the Marvel comic which was completely different, frequently stupid and also totally awesome. How about Optimus being killed but his mind being backed up on a 3.5″ floppy disk so that he might live again? Starscream opening up an island resort called “Club Con” or Ratbat’s “Car Wash of Doom?” The Micro-Masters or whatever they’re called becoming professional wrestlers? Ratchet and Megatron being fused together in a teleportation accident like a deformed Brundlefly? They had some cool stuff.

pretty solid list James EXCEPT for the glaring omission. can you honestly tell me that the decepticons “over energized” on energon (with laserbeak crashing into the ground mind you) is not worth of a top 15 nay, top 5 moment!? blasphemy

this video needs to be shown at all theaters right before the new trans. movie is shown that way people will leave and go watch your videos, then learn you have a movie coming out and they go watch that instead. Better yet have a preview of the nerd movie before trans. movie and at the end of the preview you should clearly say “watch my movie instead of any of Micheal bays flaming garbage heap of burnt shit series he calls transformers.

  • AnKun

    June 18, 2014 at 5:48 pm

In my opinion, the anime version of Transformers were somewhat better, especially Masterforce one. There are 2 reasons for that:

    1. The main heroes are humans who become transformers. As a kid, I found this more interesting because I could associate myself with them (because I’m a human, not a robot).

    2. The Transformers in Masterforce use…. The Force. Like jedi knights. Transformers + Jedis, what can be more awesome?

  • June 18, 2014 at 8:25 pm

Transformers is fun. And there are awesome moments. I especially like Unicron. That deep, rumbling voice, and all that transformation animation.

You know, me and some others did a small review on the classic movie. You can check it out at Funky Monkey’s House of Love.

  • June 18, 2014 at 9:49 pm

Wait what about the transforming SOUND FX! IT’S LEGENDARY!! Should have at least been #15. 🙂

  • tsukino_kage

    June 18, 2014 at 10:17 pm

Awesome, I always loved transformers too. But it’s not just G1 that’s on my list. You should try “Code of Hero” from Beast Wars, “Cramp” from Armada, which featured a heroic Starscream of all things, Shattered Glass, The War Within and Megatron Origins comics, and the War For Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron games.
And why no love for Rodimus? “Arise, Rodimus Prime!” is the climax of the movie. Rodimus contrasts Optimus well, he’s the unsure young hero, trying to fill the admittedly huge shoes left behind by his predecessor, and is too hard on himself in the process. He’s not Optimus at all and that’s the point. He has his own merits.
And am I the only one who though that Cyclonus should have just left Galvatron to die and took over the Decepticons? Because quite frankly, he would have been a better leader than that lunatic.

Every kid I knew, when they were done with school, went home and watched Transformers & GI Joe. Maybe Inspector Gadget too. 80’s were awesome.

  • greedo

    June 18, 2014 at 10:48 pm

I was so glad that when they revived Optimus. It reversed one of the major blunders of TV kids series: Never kill off the main character. Ever. Not only that, I think the movie goofed in killing off too many of the fans’ beloved heroes. It may have been a bold movie, but it was a stupid one, because the show was never quite the same after that.

Speaking of which, if anyone had to die in that series, why oh why wasn’t it Galvatron? I think it would have been cool to see that. I wanted to see what kind of a leader StarScream would have made, but instead they kill off Prime, and let G survive. Blown dramatic potential, right there.

    • greedo

      June 18, 2014 at 10:49 pm

What I mean by that last part is, I believe that they made a mistake in killing off the main hero, but letting the main villain survive. Poor move.

  • Keifer Martin

    June 18, 2014 at 10:52 pm

Eh, I’m not too big on G1. I appreciate it for its place in history and there are some awesome things about it (Grimlock and The Touch. ‘Nuff said.), but I feel like later Transformers shows had more interesting plots and characters. (Code of Hero from Beast Wars was probably the best single episode of ANY Transformers show.) Cool video regardless, James. Always nice to see you do more stuff on cartoons. Hope to see more in the near future.

  • June 18, 2014 at 11:11 pm

The Megazord from Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers did not copy the concept of combining robots from Transformers or Voltron. Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers was adapted from a Japanese TV series called Super Sentai, specifically its 1992-1993 season, Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger (Dinosaur Squadron Beast Rangers). Super Sentai premiered in 1975 and is currently airing its 38th season.

The first season of Super Sentai to feature combining robots was Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan (Solar Task Force Sun Vulcan), which premiered February 7, 1981. The Japanese source material for Voltron, Beast King GoLion, premiered March 4, 1981. The Constructicons, the first team of combining robots in Transformers history, wouldn’t show up until December 15, 1984.

All of that being said, the granddaddy of all combining robots was Getter Robo, which saw action from April 4, 1974 to May 8, 1975. You can see it transform here:

Fun fact: Getter Robo was produced by Toei Animation Co., Ltd., which is a branch of Toei Company, Ltd. Toei Company, Ltd. has produced virtually all of Super Sentai, the source material for Power Rangers. You know what else Toei Animation Co., Ltd. has produced? Beast King GoLion, the source material for Voltron. Power Rangers couldn’t possibly copy Voltron, as both Power Rangers and Voltron were adapted from Japanese shows produced by the same company.

  • June 18, 2014 at 11:34 pm

Transformers was mega popular around the world. I saw the entire series back in the day in Chinese (yep). So, one difference was that the series actually had a conclusion. After the return of Optimus Prime, and opening the Matrix of Leadership to save the world, the Decepticon called permanent truth! In the US version, Galvatron simply said there will no war today, but in the Chinese, it was altered to a declaration of peace, and so the series ended. FACT.

The name of the narrator is Victor Caroli. He played Collins in the 1975 tv series, Police Story. Caroli also did the voice of Tirac in the original My Little Pony TV series, as well as narrated Robotix.

Wow… I grew up to the great cartoons of the 90’s but this was the only thing I would have looooooved to have watched on television during the 80’s! Great moments to recap my brother’s childhood since he grew up during this time and I didn’t know Unicron transforms either :-O I gotta check out the movie, let alone get into the first few seasons. Great list James!

    June 19, 2014 at 10:28 am

I would’ve also added when the Decepticons kill off some of the autobots in the movie when they board the space ship and the song Instruments of Destruction kicks in just as Megatron screams” DIE AUTOBOTS!!” CLASSIC fucking moment right there, not just for the series but in cinema too! That whole movie was badass and still holds up beyond Bayformers of now. I have yet to see a new incarnation of the Transformers that even compares to G1!

  • June 19, 2014 at 10:38 am

Unicron transforming is awesome! Then in the later series when Primus transformed was equally as badass.

  • June 19, 2014 at 11:50 am

Ok,im maybe weird but… when i was a kid i thought Transformers show was too cheesy. I loved that Optimus Prime toy-transformer (Got it with his trailer.I played with it like crazy and i had the dinosaur/spacerocket transformer from decepticons. It could transform to a robot or a dinosaur -my first transformers,i was so happy i got it 🙂 )

  • June 19, 2014 at 11:52 am

sorry ,i meant it could transform to a robot , a spaceship or to a dinosaur robot. I played with it for years . Then i got the Optimus Prime with his trailer/headquarters thingy … i did some really major epic battles with those two 🙂 Oh and later i got a set of micromachines mini-transformers — oh wow those were so freakin cool! Remember those ??

PS Only i hate in transformers, its…well Blaster Action Figure CONE ON! He is bigger than Optimus Prime but in show are smaller. Even Soundwave has normal size and still had those mini cassetes bots.

I have only seen a few episodes of the original Transformers TAS.

Was a bit surprised you didn’t mention the new addition to the series, Transformers Prime, wich is also really good imo, and deserving of a mention. Granted, Transformers Prime builds of the current movies, but it’s still a good show.

Good top 15 Transformers vid thou, shame that Transformers Prime didn’t get a honorable mention…

Hey james, why not do a review of other transformers series, i dont know if you have watched them at all.

My personal favorites were beast wars and beast machines, one thing this series lacked in comparation to the rest and i was glad that it lacked were Humans, personally i have come to realize that the humans in transformers is what brings the series down

  • June 19, 2014 at 7:27 pm

    Thank you for the memories.

james please check out ken Griffey jr baseball for snes. the names of all the players on all the teams are plays on different things, but the names of the Colorado rockies would intrigue you. look at the roster especially the lineup and you’ll see they’ve changed all the names of the players in favor of universal and hammer horror icons. Karloff, chaney, Lugosi, cushing, lee, fischer, and so many others. you guys could show that leading up to monster madness…I thought my whole youth how cool that was, I could play baseball with universal and hammer horror names…maybe I just thought it was cool

I have an explanation for why Prime died, but it might be reaching a little since it’s based on some info that wasn’t created until ten years after the movie came out.

In the show Transformers: Beast Wars they explain that each Transformer has a “spark” which is basically a soul, that’s contained in a small, spherical “spark chamber” somewhere in the their body. The rest of the body can get smashed to pieces but as long as the spark is intact, the rest can be rebuilt and they’ll be fine, kind of like how you have to hit a vampire in the heart to kill it.

My guess is that one of Megatron’s shots hit Optimus’s spark chamber, and that’s why it was fatal when he survived all the previous harm done to him.

    • June 19, 2014 at 10:04 pm

Also, the only one available to do repairs was perceptor. With Ratchet and Wheeljack dead, repairs of that magnitude were out of the question.

      Also, plot handwaive.

Hahaha, you’re right with the combining robots fad being really popular in the Land of the Rising Sun, it even happens in its “national videogame”, Dragon Quest, which is not even about robots! Google Mumboh-Jumboe.

I figured for sure that the Death of Starscream would be #1, or maybe even tied for #1 with the Unicron Transformation. Honorable mentions also would include the HotRod turning into Rodimus Prime and Megatron killing off all the crappy autobots at the beginning of the movie….also cant forget the sharkdacon demolition derby or HotRod beating up a giant metal squid….best insults? Soundwave superior, Constructacons inferior.

I’ve an acquaintance who actually can’t STAND both the Dinobots and Return of Optimus Prime. The Dinbot because, with a concept like “robots in disguise”, why would a robot disguise itself as a robotic creature of any kind (he excludes Beast Wars cuz they were realistic, but what does that say about Transmetals?), and Return of Optimus Prime cuz he felt it cheated the ending of Dark Awakening where we see Optimus’s ship get destroyed. I guess he’s never seen any old saturday matinee movie serials. Reminds me of Annie Wilkes: “HE NEVER GOT OUT OF THE COCK-A-DOOKIE CAR!!”

    James you rock, thank you!!

  • June 20, 2014 at 7:48 pm

My most favorite part of Transformers, hell, ANYTHING in existence, will always be Stan Bush’s Dare. The first time I ever heard the song, which was when I first saw James’ Transformers: The Movie review, I was as entranced as James says he was with the birth of galvatron. I for a long time wanted to know more about the song, and when I found the movie’s soundtrack on youtube, I felt like Dare had taken my soul, put it in a drink mixer, and served it to me in a champagne glass. It is my favorite piece of ANYTHING of all time, and I listen to it as often as humanly possible, because it is what keeps my happiness fueled enough to make it through my hell of a life. It astounds me how people don’t talk about it as much as they do The Touch, because I feel it’s actually a little bit better. And that’s saying a lot, considering how amazing The Touch is. Think about that.

  • June 20, 2014 at 8:45 pm

Fantastic video james, just reminding me of why I love Transformers so much. I try, at least once a year to watch the original movie (just cos the music is so awesome), and each and every time i get a tear when optimus dies, exactly like when i saw it in the cinema at 3 years old (My first cinema trip!)… Dad cheered me up by buying me hotrod 🙂

When i first saw optimus dying i thought, wait this is a joke right? they probably will have him return in the new episodes. When i saw the zombie optimus i thought that otobots might find a way to have him revived again, but i was disapointed to see that he died again.I believe that they make him back because people wanted him to return.A character like optimus that is wise and brave like that cannot be dead especially when he is a freaking robot right.I believe that when they killed him in the movie they just wanted to show that hes spirit was old and stuff like that.Because transformers actually have spirits inside of them close to humans, they are not only machines because they also have feelings for useless creatures like humans….ehm for a moment i sounded like megatron, sorry about that.Anyway you get my point, because they was on earth they wanted to help people to save their place as well, and some times that shows that they were allot better than humans that destroying the planet with wars and stuff.About the michael bay film i dont have much to say except that was not so good, and they didn’t take it to serious when they made it.The original show deserves an emmy award, you know something that the movie would never achieved.

awesome video. i’ve been following cinemassacre for years now, never felt like commenting or registering to the this site, but i’m logging in just to write this: you guys really need to change this media player, cause it sucks monkey ballz. it sucks big time. i know that i’m not the only one, i’ve seen many complaints about the player before. so when are you going to care?

i mean, shouldn’t be that hard… and it’s not about the connection speed, the player sucks so bad that the visual is constantly stuck, with the audio going on. i’m so fed up, i usually search the title of the video and watch it on youtube, but this one wasn’t uploaded there.

anyway, great video. hope this sucky media player will go away eventually.

The most awesome moments of Transformers and you actually forget the episode where a dark stranger turns some Autobots human, and that dark strangers turns out to be none other than Cobra Commander from GI Joe!!?

One major omition in this list! For the longest time I thought it was going to be number one, but amazingly no… The intro!! The most memorable music theme of its time and even to this day! I still remember every note and lyrics 30 years later, that’s how baddass it is!

I’d add at least as honorable mentions the “Die Autobots!” scene from the movie, as well as the less-lethal version Optimus has when he comes into Autobot City.

Heh. Rodimus Prime. Look like I have a new name for my dong.

  • June 28, 2014 at 11:04 pm

Megatron was a cool villain because he was always crafty and made sure he destroyed the Autobots the way he planned. But Galvatron was funny because instead of being crafty, he’d charge head on. And if you didn’t do what he wants, he’ll turn Hitler on you and kick your ass :p

I love when in Web World they check up on Galvatron having the time of his life playing with some cubes, only to find out he’s built a fucking gun and starts shooting everywhere

All fab moments! Though I think star scream coming back as a ghost was also one of the more awesome moments for me.

I have to say Unicron is amazing and perfectly introduced in the movie. I can’t wait to see when they put Unicron in a new movie and totally fuck it up… like Galactis…….. Fuck you Fox.

Probably the death of Starscream. I had this weird idea hoping they would develop the character into a more sophisticated non-total-weasel one just because I liked jets…sort of like watching roadrunner to see if the coyote catches type of thing. So when I saw the phantom star scream ep I just barely managed to cont. watching the bad animation of that last series.

Starscreams death should have been included. After finally gaining leadership after all those attempts, only to have it ripped away instantly. ‘Megatron, is that you?’ ‘Here’s a hint’. Awesome. Then the way Starsceam crumbles to dust. Great scene and ending for the character.

I think instead of it just being The Touch, it should have been all the music from Transformers: The Movie, or at least talk about The Theme by Lion

This was nostalgia-riffic. The best part about being a kid and having the toys was making the transforming sounds yourself. That and breaking your cousins toys so he didn’t beat you.
