Awesome!!! I can’t get enough of this game!!! Wish you had two item capabilities, and that you would lose your time when you get hit. Also where are the red boxes, that was a good weapon?

    • June 16, 2014 at 2:23 pm

Agreed on the continue rather than highlight. My brother and I are pissed about that! The battle mode does suck. I do however think they could do both types, arena and track. Also, how about some more DLC, adding characters and levels. Maybe challenge modes too? Thanks Mike. See you at the Hollywood Premiere! Will you sign my copy of MK8?

      • June 16, 2014 at 3:00 pm

Yeah, I would love some more levels as downloadable content as well. I would pay for that. Also, I will personally not be at the Hollywood premiere for the movie. I will be at the Phoenixville PA and NYC screenings. James will be at the Hollywood one though.

    • June 16, 2014 at 5:15 pm

Getting rid of the 2 items thing was a good choice, it stopped the person in first storing up weps and never getting hit

      • June 16, 2014 at 7:19 pm

I agree on getting rid of two items, just a MK tradition. But One may now store the 8 ball (MK 8 weapon), hold it until first and use it in first. I think when you are hit, the item should be dropped? But thats just a personal opinion. Know what i mean? Does anyone else get dizzy when your drifting on the zero g and someone bumps you? lol

      • June 17, 2014 at 4:45 pm

I know what you mean, but the chances of storing the 8 ball weapon and getting into first is pretty slim considering how easy it is for other to bump into you and take all the items.

That bomb as buggered me up more times than I can count.

    Game looks BADASS!

    June 16, 2014 at 2:54 pm

Speaking of newer games, what happened to the Link Between Worlds videos?

Agreed on the menu option switch. One other thing I don’t like is the inability to pick up a new item if you’re carrying one behind you. Maybe it’s a compromise for being able to keep your items if you fall off.

    • June 16, 2014 at 3:01 pm

A Link Between Worlds was one of the best Zelda games they ever made. That’s all I really have to say about it. Now go play it!

      • AbareKiller

        June 16, 2014 at 3:37 pm

I’ve played it and definitely agree, one of my favorites in the series and I’ve played them all. But I know there was a Cinemassacre video with thoughts on it back when it was released that I purposely avoided so as to not be spoiled in any way, and that video seemed to have disappeared altogether when I came back looking for it after completing the game.

      • June 16, 2014 at 5:16 pm

Link Between Worlds was so awesome, loved playing through it

  • June 16, 2014 at 3:18 pm

My biggest frustration is that if you’re using the gamepad, there’s no minimap on the screen! I know it only takes a moment to look down at the gamepad, find where you are on the map, then find where look at where the other players are. But in a fast pace racing game, it’s the two seconds you have to look away from the screen could send you veering off the course!

The subreddit for mario kart is filled with posts complaining about this, so hopefully they’ll address it in a future update.

You’re absolutely right, Mike. Some more things I noticed also. At the end of a cup, we no longer have the traditional podium fiesta, it just shows your game highlights instead. I feel they didn’t have time for it, and battle mode. They just made a quick duck tape fix because of a deadline.

I’d also say that, they could’ve included more cars, equipments and characters. And why sticking to the traditional 8 cups, give us more cup! Mirror(lightning) mode is nice but not enough.

  • June 16, 2014 at 3:32 pm

I’ve played this game and i have to agree with you Mike, having Battle Mode take place on the actual courses is not a very good idea, also, I have a suggestion for James and Mike Mondays, I think that you guys should play the game Skate 3, I know that you guys don’t really play sports games, im not a huge fan myself, but, the game is filled with sooooo many glitches, and ridiculous things you can do. If you don’t really want to play that game, that’s fine, I just thought that I’d give you a suggestion, anyways, great video as always, and keep on gaming!

  • June 16, 2014 at 3:33 pm

Another minor thing that annoys me is that you can’t get a second item while holding out a banana or shell(s). Almost every other Mario Kart game lets you do this.

  • June 16, 2014 at 3:44 pm

Looks like a great game, the review could have been longer and more comprehensive, but I love that you reviewed it at all! Thanks Mike!

    • June 16, 2014 at 3:48 pm

This isn’t a review of the game. I just wanted to address the problem with Battle Mode.

  • Weldin Dunn

    June 16, 2014 at 4:29 pm

Cool, I thought it was pretty good, but what annoyed me is, like the 7th, you have to make your own kart. It’s a nice option, and I like unlocking things, but they should have that option, as well as pre-made karts. Come on! I want to be lazy! Also, the courses weren’t very good. I LOVED the courses from the wii version. It had DK Summit, Mushroom Gorge, and Coconut mall. THOSE WERE AWESOME! The new maps were pretty good though. Over all good game, but minor problems.

  • June 16, 2014 at 4:40 pm

yeah i agree the game is great but the battle mode is the only thing wrong with it and with all the people talking about it i believe it might get heard then they might fix it but any thing right now is just wishful thinking. any ways they did say they will have DLC but its not for sure its going to be so yeah… anyways i cant wait to see what they come out with for DLC but the game is still fun to play in the mine time

  • Nintendomaniac

    June 16, 2014 at 4:40 pm

Yeah, I don’t know what Nintendo was thinking with the battle mode in this game. Everything else was so great and polished, like they put so much time and effort into it…but with battle mode, it seemed they just slapped it together as fast as they could without even trying. Maybe they did that intentionally because of future DLC plans?

  • Chase Carnahan

    June 16, 2014 at 5:05 pm

I think everyone agrees with you with the issues. I feel if they went with the tracks that it would be a different style of battle if they went with the normal courses. Perhaps if you get hit 3 times you are out of the race permanently while racing each other. Otherwise battle arenas would have been better.

  • DenOndeBoss

    June 16, 2014 at 5:41 pm

I agree with battlemode being rushed, the missing mini-map on screen and not being able to keep an extra weapon in stock while carrying a banana or shell behind you. Also, I don’t like the coins weapon pick-up! I mean, it’s a good idea that you can find them scattered along the course, but getting it as a “weapon” is not cool.

    • June 16, 2014 at 5:53 pm

I like that they re-introduced the coins, which were from the original Mario Kart. Getting 10 of them makes you go faster. So if you are better at steering, you’ll have an advantage. And I like that you get rewarded for having driving skills.

    • Nintendomaniac

      June 16, 2014 at 9:34 pm

They put the coins weapon pick up in there and got rid of the extra weapon you could keep in stock to make it more difficult for someone to hold on to first place. They thought this would make things more balanced in multiplayer.

  • June 16, 2014 at 6:21 pm

I love Mario Kart games but I admit I’m not a hardcore player. I never got the hang of drifting and taking shortcuts. Just not a power gamer so 150cc kicks my butt.

  • Jeh-Jeal

    June 16, 2014 at 7:39 pm

Another thing I don’t like about this game is that if you have triple shells then you can’t obtain another item, you must use those shells in order to get another item. Same thing if you are dragging a shell or banana peel behind you it won’t let you get another item in the mean time that brings it down for me.

  • June 16, 2014 at 7:54 pm

Your complain about the button is not so important but for the battle mode i agree.Though to tell you the truth i dont care that much about the battles in this game but mostly for the races.

  • June 16, 2014 at 8:00 pm

That with the coins though i didn’t knew that was helping you go faster. The first mario cart game i played it on GBA and was a really good port from snes. But i liked allot to collect those coins for points also, because i remember that coins helped in the score some how.Until now i have beaten perfect the GBA,DS,and wii versions and they all really good.Mike try also modnation racers on ps3 its a really good clone.

I love MK been playing it since it came out . I wish I was able to go to the movie premiere in Hollywood since its not a far drive for me but my back surgery fucks that all up for me, but on the bright side I got more time to watch these videos and play my NES. I wish James and Mike Mondays would do a NES Wizard And Warriors or SNES Goof Troop that would be fuckin awesome. Great video by the way Mike.

  • June 16, 2014 at 8:51 pm

Your complaint is battle mode?? Not the horrible local multiplayer that is split side by side instead of top and bottom? Or the wii u gamepad not functioning as a rear view cam/player 1 screen and having player 2 use the tv? This game comes out of the gate flawless, but after playing through a few series it needs a ton of work.

  • June 16, 2014 at 11:27 pm

I wasn’t sure if I should get this game or not, but after seeing this review, despite the battle-mode being ruined, I really like the look of it and want to get it now.

  • culwin

    June 17, 2014 at 12:55 am

This is a good racing game, but not as good as Ivan ‘Ironman’ Stewart’s Super Off Road

  • June 17, 2014 at 2:42 am

Eh, Battle Mode for me it’s useless since the Gamecube. I played the N64 Battle Mode for years with my friends, really, and now every Battle Mode for every Mario Kart has that stupid countdown clock when the N64 one didn’t. Sorry, but even if they fix the arenas, that countdown it’s ruining everything for me anyway. The racing and the online are perfectly done so, as of now, i don’t even feel the need for a battle mode, i need to collect 10000 coins so i’ll unlock everything before that, and i have a long way to go

    • June 17, 2014 at 6:59 am

I would have to agree with that. Who wants a time limit in battle? It should be like SNES & N64 like I said in the video

  • June 17, 2014 at 7:30 am

I really enjoy Mikes reviews: mega man & carl barks for example. Mike should do Reviews more often.

    June 17, 2014 at 10:38 am

I hope James agrees to do this game for James & Mike Mondays. Yeah, this might just be the best Wii U game as of now, I wish they’d release Dragon Quest X so I have a proper opinion.

  • rydamusprime

    June 17, 2014 at 10:54 am

I don’t know if it has been mentioned yet or not (too lazy to read through the comments) but the idea you have to include updated versions of old Battle Arena courses was used in Mario Kart Wii, it has 1 classic course from each of the 5 Mario Kart titles before it, and Mario Kart 7 for the 3DS has a GBA, N64 and DS course to choose from… if your not familiar with these other Mario Karts you should check em out Mike 🙂

  • June 17, 2014 at 10:59 am

I bet they left the battle courses out on purpose just so there’s a reason to make/buy the next one. i mean to me that’s obvious…noone would ever just forget to put it in

I think you and James should team up with Angry Joe and other Joe and play some Mario Kart 8 The Angry Army Vs. The Nerd Army that will be awsome the two greatest game reviewers on YouTube compete in a all out Kart Racing.

This is exactly how I feel about the game, Mike! And I have the same 2 complaints!

  • Andrea Lopriore

    June 17, 2014 at 1:37 pm

Good old Mario. It’s a pity I’ve never been able to enjoy any of his games, because I grew up with the Playstation 2 and therefore I’m more into Sony than Nintendo. Heck, the ONLY Mario games I played so far are New Super Mario Bros on DS and Mario Kart Wii.

  • June 17, 2014 at 2:54 pm

Just a question: do American Wii U-games always come in red boxes? European copies are in the blue Wii U-logo colour.

  • nammm3

    June 17, 2014 at 4:06 pm

That looked like a lot of fun still nevertheless 🙂 Nice review Mike, i keep hearing about how Luigi gives you a ”death stare” when he passes you. Does every character do that too?

  • June 17, 2014 at 5:02 pm

This game, 3d world and every game shown at this e3, makes me want a wii u more then ever!

  • chio trou

    June 17, 2014 at 5:20 pm

did anybody notice that the designers of mario kart stole the idea for driving on walls from crash notro kart??? Its exactly like that!

  • June 17, 2014 at 6:12 pm

Yeah that option menu thing annoys the shit out of me to..the battle mode was a mess and 2 more things..was no map really was memorable for me. & getting items is “to fair” like..I once got a star in 2nd place All my wat? Also when you are in last place 50 million miles away from first you can possibly get a one Mushroom or banana like that’s totally going to save your ass it’s stupid…but that’s just my rants.

  • June 17, 2014 at 7:33 pm

Remember F-Zero? Eight years since the last game. I really want that to come back.

Oh wow, I’m not sure how they could overlook something as obvious as arena-based battle mode.

  • June 18, 2014 at 11:37 am

I like the battle mode in this game I don’t care what you say I like it

  • June 18, 2014 at 11:39 am

Hey Mike Do you know about luigi’s death stare?

Hey did you happen to see the update that was released today for Mario Kart 8? They actually switched the “view highlight reel” and “next race” like you were addressing in the video. There is also the announcement of Link from the Zelda seris and Villager from Animal crossing will be dlc coming soon along with 16 new tracks and kart customizations like Capt Falcon’s Blue Falcon.
