AVGN: Desert Bus

Mike Matei / May 28th, 2014

It’s the 10 year anniversary since the first episode of the Angry Video Game Nerd!

In this episode the Nerdย takes a look at Desert Bus and Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest Redaction! Desert Bus was a mini game that was included on Penn & Teller’s Smoke and Mirrors (and unreleased game planned for the Sega CD). It was developed by Imagineering and published by Absolute Entertainment. Absolute went out of business so the game was never released but the Nerd was able to obtain a copy to torture himself with! In Desert Bus, you drive a bus from Arizona to Las Vegas in real time. It’s considered one of the worst games ever made, making it ripe for a review by the Nerd!

Then the Nerd takes a look at Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest Redacted – a hack that improves upon the flaws in the original NES game.

Big AVGN movie update coming soon!ย http://cinemassacre.com/2012/11/10/avgn-the-movie-trailer/

Haha! Looks like you got yourself an admirer, James! Feels kinda humbling doesn’t it? I’m totally looking forward to the film, and I can’t fucking wait to see it! I liked this episode, felt like a nice segue to the AVGN Movie.

    • June 22, 2014 at 5:21 pm

Rejoice indeed, also rejoice at the fact that there are 79 inspiring stories out there

Happy ten year anniversary of The Angry Video Game Nerd everyone! And congratulations to you, James, for maintaining the poupularity and the authenticity of the show for this long. Here’s to ten more years, or maybe even twenty! I can’t wait to watch the movie ๐Ÿ™‚

        May 29, 2014 at 9:09 pm

I’m a regular viewer. I am regular commenter. What is wrong with that, huh? Is it that you think that I have nothing better to do? That I do nothing but hang around this site and wait for videos to be posted? Why do you have to be such a jerk? Why don’t you say this to any of the other regular commenters? The ones that probably post way more than me? please, don’t be so rude!

      • Lukas Sprehn

        May 29, 2014 at 9:14 pm

I just noticed your other comment regarding my idea of using Kevin Smith’s Smodcast Pictures to distribute his film. You are the one that needs to “get a grip buddy.” I may be a passionate fan, like many others, but I do actually care about many other things out there. I do actually have a life.

      • arigatoor

        May 30, 2014 at 2:09 pm

I have been a frequent visitor of the cinemassacre site and I also have noticed that Lukas comments on many videos, but I never thought of it as a “bad thing” as you imply here – if anything I thought it was very cool.

If I remember correctly, Lukas was one of the people who offered to help out with some visual effects for the AVGN movie when James Rolfe was looking for VFX artists in a blog post (I found the blog post: http://cinemassacre.com/2013/02/09/vfx-artists-wanted-for-avgn-the-movie/ ). This means he is studying at a film school or is already working in the film industry.

Now this is speculation on my part, but something tells me that Lukas also watched James Rolfe’s autobiographical videos “Cinemassacre 200” and “The Dragon in my Dreams”, two videos that are very inspiring and eye-opening, especially to people who are studying film or are planning to do so (I am studying media communication, which is not exactly film production, but my ambition is to head in that direction as well and I felt those videos were very encouraging). So I think Lukas, as many other avid followers, cheers James on by commenting here, primarily because he sees him as a role model for film makers, not necessarily because of an “obsession” with the fictional character of the Angry Video Game Nerd.

Also, I am sure there are other fans who also comment a lot of the videos, but most of the time you spot Lukas because he uses a photo of his face as his avatar picture while most commentators on here have these automatically generated pixelated space invaders-like avatars.

If you wonder, why I remember posts from back then and reply to your comment, Lukas’ name sounds like he is either from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany or Austria and I am from Germany, so every time I read a comment by him I thought: “Cool, it’s that guy from Europe who maybe does not live too far away from where I live” (I personally don’t know other AVGN fans in Germany).

      • Lukas Sprehn

        May 30, 2014 at 2:37 pm

Thanks Arigatoor. And yes, I am actually from Europe. From Denmark even, which is one of the countries you mentioned. And you also hit the nail on the head with why I am here, and why I cheer James on. I also think that your theory about the avatar thing makes sense. It’s really hard to tell everyone apart on here hah ๐Ÿ˜›
You’re also right about me wanting to work in the industry. After I stopped working on the AVGN Movie’s visual effects departement I moved on to some of my friends’ projects. Things like Grim: A Tale of Death. Maybe you’ve heard of it. It’s a huge dark fantasy web series some British friends of mine are making. I am on the project as the visual effects consultant. And I have some other cool stuff coming up ๐Ÿ™‚ I primarily want to actually write the stories for films though. And also write novels. Just write stories in general, no matter the medium it’s for. But when I do decide I want to work on a project, like the AVGN Movie, or Grim, it’s always because I really believe in the people and in the projects themselves. I’d never say yes to working on Big Brother for example, even if they decided to give me a hundred million dollars. It would never happen. Glad to meet a fellow European fan by the way! ๐Ÿ™‚

        May 31, 2014 at 11:19 am

You’re welcome, Lukas. My timing of reading through the recent Cinemassacre blog posts could have been better, because I just now discovered the dispute in the comment section of the May 26 VFX update (I usually skim those short blog posts). Oh boy. I would have posted my reply there if I had discovered those comments before Gariss90’s one here.

Anyways, I just looked up the indie gogo video of Grim, it looks awesome. It’s off-topic, so I am going to write you a message on facebook (I assume you have an account and use your real name there as well). It would be cool to stay in contact, also with regards to any potential AVGN movie premiere events in Europe.
        – Philipp Nowatschin

And congratulations to James & Mike, for a decade of AVGN and more than a decade of making films! Keep up the good work!

My God! I think this is the most emotional Nerd episode ever! You saying it is time to retire had me almost crying. Of course I know you aren’t because you have a movie on the way. What a great way to celebrate ten years. I hope you have ten more years for this show to go on. Reviewing shitty games until the end of time. God bless you AVGN!

That Desert Bus game looks boring as shit, but at least that was the entire point. Also, it was weird seeing the Nerd wearing jeans at the end of this episode. Anyway, conglaturation on the ten years, Mr. Nerd. Here’s to another ten years and I’m psyched for that epic update regarding the AVGN Movie that is right around the corner. I am ready to see this movie.

Rom hackers have also fixed E.T. The Cheetahmen. Seems it’s not uncommon for an enthusiastic hacker to correct problems that have plagued certain games for years.

Congrats, James! Can’t believe it’s been 10 whole goddamn years. I first discovered your videos in 2006 on YouTube but still, that’s a really long time.

Soooo much love for you right now, this video was awesome!!!!!

First your take on thatDesert Bus was perfect and super funny. Then I you had me going with the retirement thing and the black and white part got me really nostalgic (realizing I’ve been following you for a decade now, and all that’s happened) then bringing it back to Castlevania 2 was a brilliant idea and when you realized your angry complaints finally improved the game and decided not to retire, I started to cheer.
I couldn’t be more excited for the movie. I’m going to go to the screening wherever it is.

  • May 29, 2014 at 2:30 pm

This is the real time conversation while watching the episode with a friend in chat ๐Ÿ˜€

Friend – It’s the most interesting game I’ve evur seen! I wanna play it!
    Me – I can’t believe it
Me – He will play it all
    Me – Eight hours!
Friend – He will eat this game after all?
    Me – Oh nooou
    Me – The last episode!
Friend – But he finally found the worst game ever!
    Me – Noooo nOoOoOoOOOO
Friend – His life has no meaning anymore..
    Me – Oh God
    Me – No retiremeeeeeent!
Me – My heart was breaking
Friend – But he has to finish his own movie!
Me – Yeah, the movie is coming!
Friend – Maybe, it is his final present for all fans?
Me – I hope not, no LAST word in avgn
    Me – Nevur evur
Friend – And what If he says “goodbye” to us? What will give us a piece of fun then?
    Me – I don’t care of others
Me – I feel him as a personal friend
Me – I won’t watch other funny reviews
Me – No avgn, no more fun
Friend – I just can’t believe that. Impossible.
Friend – He became friend for many people and ends like that?
    Me – He won’t, he’s the best

wait….If this is the last episode then the game chosen was in bad taste. Desert Bus is a joke and was ment to be the way it is on purpose. Think about it, Please make atleast a hand full of closing episodes before calling it quits.

  • Tross

    May 30, 2014 at 1:54 am

Great vid. I can’t believe that Desert Bus exists. It is, however, a good example to use, to convince people that videogames shouldn’t always try to mimic reality, and that there are only certain aspects of reality that should be emulated. I personally play videogames to immerse myself in a reality that’s more exciting than our own.

That game is actually worse than reality, for quite a few reasons. A real bus would probably be driven at a faster speed, the view would probably have at least a little more variety, and you wouldn’t be driving, so you wouldn’t have to watch the road the entire time, and could sleep, chat with whoever you’re sitting with, or do other things, including handheld gaming, which could include games that are actually decent.

A hack that improves Simon’s Quest? If only Nintendo would make that available on the eShop, rather than the original version. It’s also worth noting that both Simon’s Quest, and Milon’s Secret Castle, are available for download on both the wii and the 3ds, and possibly the wii u. We sure do live in a messed up world.

  • May 30, 2014 at 3:25 am

I’ve been watching now since 2008, this is my second time commenting in all these years and I’d just like to say that you inspired me to become a classic game collector and I’ve now got a nice little library of classics and without your videos probably would’ve never experienced some of the greatest games of all time. Thank you for all the time and effort you put in all your shows, reviews and top 10 series’. I also really love your and Mikes shows on Mondays. Can’t wait for the movie James! Keep it up! ๐Ÿ˜€

    • arigatoor

      June 2, 2014 at 3:06 pm

Okay, my comment was posted, finally. Here is the youtube link, its from a movie soundtrack:
(looks like my comment does not get posted if I spell out the name of the movie and the song here, probably the spam filter thinks I want to advertise stuff).
Please let me know if my reply was helpful, so that I know that my research was not in vain.

    • arigatoor

      June 2, 2014 at 3:14 pm

Indeed, the comment filter system allows me to post a link to an external website like youtube, but not the name of the song and the movie that’s funny. Hint: the composers are Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt. Let’s hope the system allowes me to post the names of people, at least.

For the record, I am sure that the epic track at the end of “Desert Bus” is an original composition by a supporter of James (the instruments sound like they have been produced with audio composition software and not with a real orchestra).

      • June 2, 2014 at 9:58 pm

I think you might be right it’s probably the movie already mentioned above but an original composition as you said.

Desert bus was Pen and Tellers way to shut up the people that wanted to make “Realistic games”. this was realistic driving. boring.

There is actually Bus stops you can stop at. you can also get to las vegas too, but you wont see anything in there, just a score and you turn around back to Tuscon.

I wish I could know you better, but knowing you from afar has ben enough for me. I am a 34 year old female. I remember the days of nintendo. I still play with those games on the emulators. I truly wish I still had a working Nintendo. My husband passed away a few years ago. I have been left without any real direction. You brought me home. I can’t call you Nerd. I call you James. I always just think of you as James Rolfe. And I love you for everything you have done. There simply isn’t any better way to put it. I have no idea how you have pulled this off. I like the fact that James has moved away from mostly Nintendo games to some of the other titles. The fact that he has moved over to more recent titles means that he can probably continue making videos for another couple years at the rate he’s making them now (one every couple months or so).

Oh, and Crazybus (and its sequal) are actually considered the worst games ever to be released, but I think your next episode should be Bubsy 3D. Bubsy is likely the worst PlayStation game in history.

I actually had an idea for a “Thomas Games” episode, where he would review the SNES, Genesis, Amiga and C64 ones, and Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends Pinball, all while looking like Sir Topham Hatt (The Fat Controller). Oh, thank god, James, you nearly scared the shit out of me with that retirement-statement! o.O Now, are we to assume that your meaningfull stare at the end is silently hinting at the movie-release? ^^ .. damn, i so much wanted to see that horror regarding E.T reassert itself. ;)๏ปฟ
One thing about Desert Bus … if its supposed to be “stoopifyingly real”, shouldn’t you at least be meeting and passing cars? o.O .. or refill the gas-tank from time to time?๏ปฟ

This would be the perfect game for a security guard to play while on duty. Casually look at the monitors then look back at the screen.

Here’s one for you: LJN VideoArt. The AVGN show is literally the first thing I thought of when I heard about that POS.

It’s going to be like Yugioh Abridged, where we only get 1-4 episodes a year.

    Great review ๐Ÿ™‚

You can see that the Fuel gage is on “Empty” and the Temperature gage is on “High”.

    You are the BEST AVGN!

While trying to be clever, the people who designed the game aren’t clever. Does life have a pause button? No. But you can stop for a bathroom break.

This reminds me of the “Minimum Wage Machine.” A wooden box with a crank that you turn to dispense 715 pennies an hour.

I loved this video. This game is the grandaddy of all trolls. I really want to know people who have maxed out the score of this game without emulators….BTW the ending of this episode is epic. Hit me right in the feels. Great work James + Crew!
