    Nice,clove Mondays

  • April 21, 2014 at 12:20 am

  • KennyM

    April 21, 2014 at 12:29 am

once again, genesis version is far superior, please play more sega versions. I love Mondays

    • CaptainViggo

      April 21, 2014 at 5:21 am

How so? I hope you’re saying “far superior” in terms of gameplay, because a quick comparison of both versions already shows that the Genesis version has far less colors than the SNES one.

    • Marky Johnson 9/30/82

      April 21, 2014 at 6:04 am

I had this for sega it was an ok game. I wish they would play earthworm jim.

    • mike watts

      April 21, 2014 at 11:14 am

i love sga to death but no sega was under the super as far graphics and games i see this now as i play my emulator snes better games and graphics but im still die hard sega

    • BrandeX

      April 28, 2014 at 6:04 am

In general, the Genesis version of a game is always inferior to the SNES version, except in cases where Nintendo forced censorship on their version such as with MK games.

  • Uncle Sporkums

    April 21, 2014 at 12:30 am

Ah, here’s a game that I’ve played. Great Donald impression, btw, James!

    • Marky Johnson 9/30/82

      April 21, 2014 at 6:08 am

Dont forget great ryu impression .

    April 21, 2014 at 12:31 am

I know you probably get a lot of requests for bad games but my favorite episodes are the ones where you do games like this, that you like. Keep up the good work, J&M make my mondays brighter.

  • Wally

    April 21, 2014 at 12:31 am

Great game, I do wish you would take a few minutes off camera to learn a few moves and get the mechanics of the game down, would make for a better review. Also, a request, Ducktales!!

  • Jeffery Johnson

    April 21, 2014 at 12:41 am

The X-Men video game is based on the animated movie Pryde of the X-Men. It came before the 90s animated show. Blob says that and such. It’s an interesting movie for what it was. Wolverine sounded more Australian than Canadian in it.

    • April 21, 2014 at 3:11 am

      Then Hugh Jackman is Australian.
      Coincidence? I don’t think so.

When i was little i though the game said Welcome to Pie! Old TVs have really a poor audio and shouts or high pitched voices were always crunched.

    April 21, 2014 at 12:50 am

Oh I’ve only played CF2 Judgement Clay. I loved the humor in that game and I didn’t even know english very well.

  • xeoneex

    April 21, 2014 at 12:53 am

at around 4:00, what episode is James refering to, I want to see it. Just from his description it sounds like a hilarious episode.

    • Marky Johnson 9/30/82

      April 21, 2014 at 6:39 am

They were talking about a goof troop request for an episode.

  • Don Skiver

    April 21, 2014 at 1:33 am

Ahh Clayfighter… Such a fun little game. Always worth a rental back when I was a kid. I think I liked Clayfighter 2: Judgement Clay a little bit better though.

  • Tross

    April 21, 2014 at 1:49 am

If you were to study Japanese, you would find that there is only one way to pronounce Japanese names, and you would never get it wrong again, but you’d also lose the fun of speculating about it. Also, text on screen is not dubbing. Dubbing is voice acting. Bad translations are possible in either case, mind you. This fighting game looks fun. Too bad it’s not on VC.

    • mason saltalamachea

      April 25, 2014 at 5:05 pm

Great to have a 13 year old expert in here.

      • May 3, 2015 at 12:08 pm

It is not relevant how old the expert is if he or she is right — and Tross is. It does not matter how many different opinions there are about pronouncing Ryu’s name, as there is only one correct one. It a bit difficult to describe simply by writing but the name is pronounced just like the English word “you” but with half-sharp “r” sound in front of it.

  • April 21, 2014 at 2:08 am

What’s the name of that new Goofy cartoon about wires? Google is silent.

  • Marky Johnson 9/30/82

    April 21, 2014 at 2:14 am

I used to this on sega its one of those games i didnt love or hate it was just something to play

  • Marky Johnson 9/30/82

    April 21, 2014 at 2:27 am

    April 21, 2014 at 3:02 am

Like I’ve said before, you guys should play “The Neverhood” on the PC. It’s a clay animation point and click adventure game. It is a great, underrated game, due to Dreamworks Games’ limited knowledge in distributing video games when they made it. The game was made by the famous graphic novel writer and artist Doug TenNapel, fame of also creating Earthworm Jim and Catscratch. He made it with his animator friends Ed Schoefield and Mike Dietz. The game stars Klaymen on a usual day of his life, until he is mysteriously involved in an adventure to save his world from an evil tyrant. The style of the game and its humor is very memorable. It’s very influenced by Doug’s drawing style, which can sometimes look a bit like a Dr Seuss kind of thing. The game has many challenging, fun puzzles. You should check it out!

A spirtiual sucssseor of the game is on its way by the way.
Doug, Ed and Mike funded it through Kickstarter and it ms going to be called “Armikrog.” I can’t wait for it 🙂

It’s out early and I love it :3

  • pikmintaro

    April 21, 2014 at 5:20 am

I have never heard of this game, so thanks for playing it.

If you ever get a chance (Or can get it to work on your PC) you should try “One Must Fall 2097” which is a really old fighting game for PC (And pretty much the only one for a loooooooong time.) they get around the whole “blood and gore” stuff by having the characters be giant robots (That look like wonderful polygons.) mentally controlled by human pilots (The pilot determines your speed/str/stamina, and the robot determines your abilities and moves so it’s fun to experiment with different combinations.) and tearing each other to pieces, and it’s also pretty much the first fighting game with stage hazards (That can also be turned off.)

Oh the memories of that game, didn’t enjoy it as much as Darkstalkers but I played the hell out of it and still do.

  • April 21, 2014 at 5:53 am

This looks like its from the same guys who made “Claymates” one of my all time favorite games. The cat that signals each match is a dead give away, seeing as how he is a playable claymate in the game Claymates.

Awesome video, I used to rent this game along with the TMNT tournament fighter all the time back then.

  • Marky Johnson 9/30/82

    April 21, 2014 at 6:32 am

Clayfighters! Clay Clayfighters! Come on fight them if you dare! Ooh! Clayfighters! Clay Clayfighters! Hit ’em back they dont care!

  • April 21, 2014 at 6:43 am

I just like this episode cause they mentioned my favourite game series ever Kingdom hearts. They should do Kingdom hearts 1 and 2 on PS2 next week.Great work guys,James Rolfe and Mike Matei u guys are the best.

  • CrushingC10996WM

    April 21, 2014 at 8:53 am

You guys should play some games based on Disney Afternoon Shows. Chip n Dale, Talespin, Darkwing Duck etc.

  • alan cart

    April 21, 2014 at 8:56 am

Made by Interplay, the same developer and publisher of Descent!

    April 21, 2014 at 10:06 am

Great video as always. Mortal Kombat (which I personally love) didn’t copy the controls from Street Fighter (which I never really liked). It did its own thing.

  • WhiteSpy

    April 21, 2014 at 10:17 am

Seriously one of the funniest episodes of James and Mike Play with Each Other yet. The Elvis part was great.

  • Brian Hurt

    April 21, 2014 at 10:22 am

Those duck voices! Man, I wish I could do that. A+

  • The Kaleidoscopic God

    April 21, 2014 at 10:22 am

“ClayFighter is a fighting game released for the Super NES in 1993 and later ported to Mega Drive/Genesis in 1994.” Mike was spot-on.

    • The Kaleidoscopic God

      April 21, 2014 at 10:41 am

However, the pronunciation of Ryu is not an opinion, man. It’s a Japanese name, so you pronounce it as per Japanese grammar. Now, there ARE slight variants. Most would say it with an ever-so-slight “R”-sound before it; others would simply say “yuu”. Under no circumstances is it pronounced “Rai-yuu” or “Ree-yuu”. Japanese doesn’t work that way.

  • BladeRunner

    April 21, 2014 at 10:35 am

awesome video as always, I always used to love the ClayFighter game they had on N64!

  • Emil Andersson

    April 21, 2014 at 10:37 am

If you love claymation, then I definately reccomend The Neverhood. It’s a PC game though, an adventure point & click game with tons of humor and is just generally weird, I love it 😀

  • April 21, 2014 at 11:00 am

have you tried Phalanx for Snes? when I was a kid I always saw it at the video store and thought “wth is up with this old guy” but then I played it and just blew my mind lol try it out guys

  • mike watts

    April 21, 2014 at 11:20 am

yes it did come out on snes in 93 the mega drive 94

  • Antidromic

    April 21, 2014 at 11:28 am

Awesome, I remember Playing ClayFighter at my cousins place and thinking it looked incredible! Will you guys please do another Atari episode soon?

  • doodoobutter

    April 21, 2014 at 11:57 am

I can’t stand this new player anymore. I remember the days when I didn’t have to reload a Cinemassacre video every 30 seconds to 1 minute or so. This thing freezes frequently. I am grateful that you provide these videos to us all but they aren’t worth the time it takes to watch them when they freeze over and over and over and over and over and over…

  • April 21, 2014 at 12:19 pm

    Nice game indeed!
Btw, I´m not from Japan, but it´s simply Re-U (Ryu). It´s not so hard, what is your problem with this? 😀

    • April 21, 2014 at 1:44 pm

The problem is you have thousands of people on the internet all telling you different things. Any way you say it, you’re told it’s wrong.

      • Marky Johnson 9/30/82

        April 25, 2014 at 7:24 am

Does it really matter lol hey James I would like to you play wizard and warriors on nes but I dont know whats really shitty about that game maybe you could do a James and Mike Mondays with wizard and Warriors and bitch about the fuckin castle at the end

      • Marky Johnson 9/30/82

        April 25, 2014 at 7:51 am

That was a great Ryu impression by the way James. I still pronounce it Rye-U (Ryu) shit who cares street fighter 2 is still a fun game.

      • May 3, 2015 at 12:16 pm

I undestand, especially since that instruction is not quite right. I could tell you the correct pronunciation if I could say it aloud to you but it is a little hard to describe it by writing. Anyway, it is not really that difficult to research the matter yourself and find out the answer, since “ryu” is not only a name but a pretty common word in Japanese, too.

  • Eric Gaizat

    April 21, 2014 at 12:46 pm

Mike, the X-men you are referencing is from a 1980’s cartoon, NOT the 1990’s series. the cartoon was called Pride of the X-men. it was narrated by Stan Lee through part of it, but THAT cartoon was based on the X-men arcade game.

    • FJMcCloud

      May 1, 2014 at 7:29 pm

Pryde of the Xmen was indeed circa 1988, but the Konami arcade game was an early 1990s cabinet.

The Konami character roster includes folks rarified in the later 1990s cartoon series (Dazzler, Nightcrawler, Colossus). Definitely based on a slightly different period of the X-Men comic.

  • April 21, 2014 at 1:00 pm

“Everyone has their own opinion on it, so nobody can really decide…”

Or, you know, people who speak Japanese… >.>
    It is an actual name/word.

  • Orionsaint

    April 21, 2014 at 1:20 pm

This is one of the first games to scan 3D models and put them in a game. Donkey Kong Country franchise did this as well.

    • FJMcCloud

      May 1, 2014 at 7:33 pm

Not to put DKC or Clayfighter on the same level. Much of Clayfighter’s artwork did indeed exist in the 3D world as real clay models, which were photographed and scanned and edited.

Whereas most of DKC’s artwork existed purely in an array of SGI computers (modelled, animated, and rendered via Alias PowerAnimator, the precursor to Maya).

A better analogy is between Clayfighter and Mortal Kombat, as both used real-world models (whether clay or real people). Heck, MK used clay figures, too (Goro, Sheeva, Kintaro, Motaro…).

  • Orionsaint

    April 21, 2014 at 1:26 pm

You guys did show or rather make us listen to the intro theme song of Clayfighter. It was hilarious. Most notably it had vocals. Which was almost unheard of in a game back then, unless it was on CD.

  • Jason Pitcher

    April 21, 2014 at 1:34 pm

Mike sounded like Jesse Pinkman at the end there.

  • taykel

    April 21, 2014 at 1:52 pm

It was National Treasure 2 where they showed the Goofy cartoon at the beginning. I doubt the cartoon is even on DVD.

  • April 21, 2014 at 1:53 pm

AVGN should do video games from the company Phoenix for the PS2. THEIR GAMES ARE HORRIBLE!

  • April 21, 2014 at 2:15 pm

guys, have to play “jungle strike”

  • April 21, 2014 at 2:53 pm

hey james and mike how are you guys? i love all of your shows

  • Another Guy Named James

    April 21, 2014 at 3:34 pm

I love the ClayFighter games (Except C2: Judgement Clay, which I like to pretend never existed…). You guys should play The N64 title, “ClayFighter 63 1/3”.

  • MisterRedShow

    April 21, 2014 at 3:37 pm

What’s the connection between this game and Claymates? I noticed one of the characters from Claymates (cat) is the ring card holder in this game. Were they both made by the same company or something?

  • Aaron1375

    April 21, 2014 at 4:04 pm

I remember renting this one, it was okay, but definitely something you’d be pissed about buying instead of renting cause it doesn’t really last long. Of course, that’s the problem with most fighters.

  • April 21, 2014 at 4:05 pm

I think the thing Magneto says was originally supposed to be something similar to “Welcome to your doom!” like in Altered Beast.

  • Moose Of Woe

    April 21, 2014 at 5:32 pm

The BLOB says “Nothing moves the Blob” from the 1989 X-men pilot that never became a series. A few years later the 90`s X-Men came out that we all know and love.

The entire X-Men arcade game was based on the characters from that X-Men pilot.

Behold the glory that is “Pryde of the X-Men”!

Also good luck getting that theme out of your head.

    • Moose Of Woe

      April 21, 2014 at 5:39 pm

The BLOB is also incorrect, because Magneto clearly moves him along with the rest of his lackeys near the end. 😀

  • April 21, 2014 at 7:39 pm

    Sonic for the xbox

  • April 21, 2014 at 7:39 pm

The correct characterization would be DeSuTuRoYa! Or would that be with a To? Oh, who knows. Sounds like Ryu’s y is a very short silent one. RyUUUU!

  • April 21, 2014 at 7:39 pm

    please james and mike

  • jerry lowe

    April 21, 2014 at 9:23 pm

8 hours at work and in the drive home.. i remember its james and mike monday. Ahhhh Heck Yeah. LOL – my inner kid loves the both of you..

  • Griff

    April 21, 2014 at 10:55 pm

the movie that the modern Goofy short was the National Treasure sequel

  • April 21, 2014 at 10:58 pm

quick note: that classic X-Men arcade game wasn’t based off the 90’s cartoon series. It’s based off the pilot of the failed 1989 X-Men: Pryde of the X-Men. That being said, that horrible line wasn’t present there either.

  • Leeleeleeleelee

    April 22, 2014 at 5:17 am

omg, did Mike almost mention Monster Rancher? I don’t think I have ever heard these guys mention MR. He said “You turn into the monolith from uh-” then never finishes! The monolith (Monol) from Monster Rancherrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

  • likalaruku

    April 22, 2014 at 6:08 am

Taffy reminds me of Bumpy from the claymation series “Bump in the Night.”

  • sgtfubar

    April 22, 2014 at 7:28 am

In Borderlands 2, the Goliaths will occasionally say “Welcome to die!” as a reference to the X-Men arcade game.

  • scals37

    April 22, 2014 at 10:24 am

“X-chicken, Welcome to die!!” haha that part of the Xmen arcade game is hysterical, we quote it all the time.. “SHIEEEELLLLD”

The cat was from Interplay’s game Claymates! I played the fuck out of that game as a kid! ^_^

  • April 23, 2014 at 5:16 am

A similar and much cooler sounding sentence is “welcome to your doom” from the game Altered Beast. Remember that one?

  • skwij

    April 23, 2014 at 8:14 am

You guys do some great impersonations! I picked up on most of them right away. Others have mentioned the Pryde of the X-Men cartoon here, and if you haven’t seen it, it might be fun to watch the cartoon, then play the game to see how they match up. It blew my mind as a kid… Thanks for being yourselves, gentlemen!

Excellent work guys! Enjoy these every week…Cant wait for the new nerd episode !

  • April 24, 2014 at 9:22 am

This game sucked major ass and balls compared to SF2 and MK games. My friend had it and would beg me to play it with him when I would come over to his house. I would pick that blob guy that James and Mike said is their favorite and crush him in every match, really just imagining playing a better game while doing so. They should’ve been more creative and had a president or a version of indiana jones, or more cool objects like that creepy talking lightbulb from those commercials on pbs years ago telling you to not leave lights on because it wastes power. or a massive giant black dildo. a dripping wet used one.

  • cybo

    April 24, 2014 at 2:17 pm

I would rather play Flappy Slider Pipes on my Ipad than play Clayfighter.

  • April 24, 2014 at 10:40 pm

You need to get a hold of the sequel ‘C2 – Judgement Clay’ More characters and better refined.

    April 25, 2014 at 9:21 pm

On the topic of Rie-you, Ree-you, the one you were yelling out was the correct pronunciation. It’s neither Rie-you nor Ree-you, in actuality. In Japanese, the use of “rya,” “ryu,” or “ryo” only functions as a floating syllable. In other words, the sound of Ryu is one SINGLE syllable. It’s hard to understand without hearing it, but if you say it like you were saying “Roo” with a “y” sound in the middle then it is correct. It almost sounds sort of like “yuu.”

  • April 26, 2014 at 8:20 pm

I hope you play Sculptor’s Cut next!

  • Drowkin

    April 26, 2014 at 11:51 pm

Come on Mike, you don’t need to review Kingdom Hearts, there’s not much more to say about that game than any other reviewer did already. But I think that everybody would be glad to see a Goof Troop review from you. Just sayin’ ^^

  • Drowkin

    April 26, 2014 at 11:58 pm

PS: I apologize for my bad grammar, I’m Belgian and french is my first language. Still, a Goof Troop review would be awesome. Just like you did with the BttF animated series. ^^
