AVGN Movie – An Inside Look

Mike Matei / April 2nd, 2014

It’s been 2 years since cameras first rolled on Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie. For the occasion, I’ve decided to give everyone this special inside look at the making of it.

Last December, we finished shooting the practical effects shots. Since then, we’ve been working on the VFX shots (any effects done during post-production) which are approximately 3/4 finished. The next step is Sound Design and then Music.

I expect the film to be done by the end of this year. In the coming months, there will be more news.

I think I’ll wait until I’ve seen it to watch too much behind-the-scenes.

    • April 3, 2014 at 2:43 pm

i think it was fred savage who demanded something like $25,000 or $30,000 per DAY to just be on set and do the lines even without rehearsing. this was a great opportunity for him to be in it but he was just too greedy.

are you still thinking about a movie tour or just one showing of the film? would be awesome if you could show it here in chicago.

  • April 2, 2014 at 11:39 pm

I hope there will be tickets to pre-order for the event. I will do anything to go to the premiere. If it was in Europe, I would take off work and fly to see it haha.

Hey James! I can’t wait to see the movie; we’ve been looking forward to it for what feels like an eternity at this point. Seeing this update is surreal, because it’s finally all coming together after such a long journey.

I really hope you’ll consider doing the premiere event at the Colonial Theatre again. I was at the trailer premiere, and it was an absolutely amazing event. Seeing all of those fans gathering together with so much hype was probably the most badass nerd moment of my life! We drove about 5 hours to get there, and it was crazy to hear from other fans that some of them had travelled even further. On top of that, there was that massive storm caused by the hurricane at the time – yet people still showed up. You truly have some dedicated fans!

It was awesome to see myself in this video too; I’m the guy with the AVGN hoody in the clip outside of the theatre. That’s such an honor for me. Anyway, thanks so much for all the years of entertainment. We’re all pulling for you, and couldn’t be happier to see you able to fulfill your dream.

  • April 3, 2014 at 12:04 am

    Man that is so awesome.
following you for years, love hearing the progress, keep it up 🙂

BTW, have you had any interaction with the guy trying to excavate the ET Cartridges?

  • April 3, 2014 at 12:58 am

Keep up the amazing work James, can’t wait to see it when it’s done. You have inspired me and made me interested in film making as well, sad thing is I’m not the best due to lack of experience.

A lot of love from Montreal man! It sucks so bad that I wont get the chance to meet you and watch the movie with a live audience, I would LOVE to do that… Thank you so much for your hard work James and also to everyone who helped for the movie and videos here at cinemassacre. My favorite thing to watch online is right here, but I also feel like I’ve watch your stuff for so long, You, Mike and Kyle are my real life friends now. 😀

    Take care!

    April 3, 2014 at 1:49 am

I live all the way in BC Canada, but I love your work. It took forever for my AVGN DVDs to come from Screw Attack, but it was worth the wait…except for the two discs that don’t work very well, but it’s best not to speak about those. When the AVGN Movie is released, I’ll definitely get it on blu-ray. I hope for your sake, as well as ours, that the movie will be out by the end of the year. I can’t imagine putting in the kind of time, effort, and money, as you have into this film, but I’m sure it will all be worth it.

i always just watch movies online for free, but with this its like, “no man, i’m paying for it. it’s not like it’s a bunch of millionaire performers. It’s people doing what they love and sacrificing so much.” ‘You have my support…”

  • April 3, 2014 at 2:16 am

wow, I’m really excited, the new things shown in this video blew me away

  • April 3, 2014 at 2:35 am

  • April 3, 2014 at 2:40 am

I would travel 500 miles and pay 50 bucks to see this movie.

  • April 3, 2014 at 4:50 am

I can’t wait for your movie! I know a lot of people here in Montreal are excited as well considering all the major game companies we have here and every time I reference one of the AVGN lines, people are able to recognize where it’s from. As a Game tester at Eidos, I think I speak for everyone when I say
we look forward to seeing your movie.

  • April 3, 2014 at 5:31 am

Without even seeing the movie I can say you’re an inspiration to anyone involved in digital media. I’ve worked in the TV industry for over a decade. Your ambition and passion has definitely rubbed off on me since I started watching you regularly 5 or 6 years ago. Understanding the process myself I still don’t know how you manage to accomplish as much as you do at the insane pace you’ve set. Keep up the amazing work!

  • April 3, 2014 at 5:58 am

I must have to say…This is gonna be Awesome!!!!!
I’m in France and I know the only way I could possibly see this film is on DVD but man France is behind you, you’re great and I love all you do M.Rolfe! Keep up the good…what do I say, the awesome work!!

  • April 3, 2014 at 6:08 am

First time I’ve seen your wife except for her hands in that one BTS video.

  • April 3, 2014 at 6:28 am

You people at least have A CHANCE to view James’ magnificent work, you’re in the US. There is certainly no way AVGN The Movie will hit Russia. Only if the film gets noticed by a bigass company and gets distributed around the world. It happened to Indonesian The Raid, why not this one? Although, I guess James has no interest in negotiating with big conglomerates.

  • April 3, 2014 at 6:30 am

I can’t wait until this movie comes out. Too bad I probably won’t be able to see this in theaters…but nevertheless, I’ll be buying this the minute it’s released. Is it too soon to ask what other movies you have in mind to make afterward? lol

  • April 3, 2014 at 6:34 am

    Nice! greetings from Finland!

  • April 3, 2014 at 6:41 am

I know this may be a lot to ask, but I think it’d be really cool if you did a small tour to do live showings with a Q&A after. If you come to Detroit, I’d definitely go!!

It’s come a long way, I’m glad your dreams coming to it’s fullest now James. Live in England so can’t see it in the cinema but for dam sure will be there to order the blueray/DVD as soon as you get it up.

Hi James, thanks for all your inspiration and dedication to filmmaking which gives us the strength to make our movies and pursuit our dreams. I sincerely hope that one day, you stand next to all the giants in the filmbussines like David Lynch and George Lucas.

But if you will make it that far, remember not to bow down to Hollywood, your fans are with you always.

Much love and good luck finishing the movie

    April 3, 2014 at 9:04 am

I was enjoying watching this but I am getting fearful of to many spoilers and seeing to many moments from the film, so I stopped it part way through. Can not wait to see the movie I. It’s entirety.

  • April 3, 2014 at 9:20 am

I would love to attend a theatrical release of this movie is it possible that you will be touring with the movie to different theaters?

  • Forsythia

    April 3, 2014 at 9:43 am

Thanks for this video, James! It’s great to see you have come this far, I know it’s cliche, but it’s inspiring to see you doing what you love. It makes me enjoy your work even more.

I’ll probably never see the AVGN movie in a theater (as I’m not from the US), but I can’t wait to buy it on DVD or BluRay to watch it on the big screen at home with my friends.

Keep going and good luck with the rest of the movie!

    Will you come to Holland?

    • Lukas Sprehn

      April 3, 2014 at 11:37 am

If not, the movie may 😀 If he gets a distributor that is. Maybe Kevin Smith’s new distribution company, Smodcast Pictures, would be willing to distribute it. Their intention is actually to distribute independent films.

  • April 3, 2014 at 11:34 am

The whole story behind the movie itself is amazing. Can’t wait to see it. 😀

  • April 3, 2014 at 11:40 am

I hope you release this in a Blu-Ray format! I got to buy it. Been a fan since 2008.

Wow, you truly have come a long way. I’m happy to see you excel in what you love and achieve your dream! I’ve been watching your videos since the 6th nerd episode and have followed you through the whole process. It’s been long and hard on you, but you’ve overcome a lot and I know it’s gonna be great. I can’t wait to see this movie!

  • SleeplessKnight

    April 3, 2014 at 1:30 pm

Can’t wait for this! So are you planning on only having a one-time only premiere or are you considering releasing it in select theaters? I’d be there in a heartbeat on opening night if it came to theaters in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Either way I’m buying the Blu-ray day 1!

  • April 3, 2014 at 1:36 pm

There has got to be some way to get a showing in cineplex theatres in Canada. I mean, Rifftrax got a live showing of Starship Troopers. I’d go see it for sure.

Ya know James… Being that this movie is based on an ATARI game, shouldn’t the AVGN logo have an Atari joystick instead of a NES controller? Also, BRING BACK THE GLITCH GREMLIN!!!!!

  • April 3, 2014 at 8:09 pm

My brother and I are planning to fly from Canada to the USA to see the premiere of your movie. Been a big fan for many years and you should be very proud of your accomplishments. • April 4, 2014 at 8:41 am

I just ordered an autographed poster. I know it’s a drop in the bucket compared to how much it cost to get this far, but I’m still happy to support the cause even this much.

  • April 4, 2014 at 10:18 am

As a guy whose main passions are based around hockey and working on cars, one could wonder why I’m here. I’ll tell you why dammit. …because one cloudy saturday years back, I stumbled across one of your Godzilla videos, and as a young pup, I was obsessed with Godzilla and monster movies (all that TNT monster vision jazz). Ever since then you have had a part in my entertainment. It didn’t hurt that Sega Genesis and Sonic were a big part of my youth as well. It has been a pleasure and I can’t wait to watch your full length film.

Blu-ray for home and Digital Copy on my IPod and/or Laptop for on the road. I may sound wired as I pay for Hulu Plus but I don’t like Streaming video. I prefer buying on Blu-ray, DVD, or if no choice ITunes.

  • ryan janik

    April 4, 2014 at 1:33 pm

Austin Texas would be a stellar place to premiere! After Blurays and DVDs, would you consider getting this thing lined up with Netflix or a paid download service? I’ve always been curious of the logistics and finances of those things.

  • Fred Almeida

    April 5, 2014 at 1:56 am

It looks like a really fun movie. However something really needs to be done about the exterior shots photography, the exterior shots still have that amateurish/made for the web look. In my (viewer) opinion, the exterior shots need more color saturation and more brightness, or a filter that does a similar effect. Check out for example the desert Star Wars movies scenes for reference and you’ll know what I mean. Cheers.

    • Lukas Sprehn

      April 5, 2014 at 9:23 pm

I disagree. But to each their own. I love James’ color correction, grade and style. Also, what do you mean by “Still has?” This was always a professional production, not made for the web. I don’t know if you slipped gramatically, by accident, or if you mean it looks like James’ episodes, which I do not think it does.

      • Fred Almeida

        April 6, 2014 at 1:53 am

Still has, since the first trailer. I’m talking only about the external shots, in my opinion its missing something, and I guess is color vibrance and brightness, that is making this professional production look like something that someone shot in the backyard with a HD camera and called it a day. I’m just being honest here, and I prefer to point it now while it’s still in production instead of doing it after it’s complete.

      • Lukas Sprehn

        April 6, 2014 at 6:37 pm

I still disagree though. It could be compression that’s making you think this, or the fact that it’s not shot on some RED camera, but actually on a Panasonic AF100. Though, honestly, in my opinion the efterlod shots are some of my favorites. Though the shots with the pilgrim gamers traveling was a bit off…

      • Lukas Sprehn

        April 6, 2014 at 6:40 pm

A little bit of saturation, though, might actually be the cherry on the cake… Maybe you’re right that it can look better with that. I do think it looks really good, but maybe you are right about it being able to look een better… I disagree about the backyard comment though. It doesn’t, in any way, give me that impression. On the other hand, something like To Boldly Flee does…

Microsoft is sucking the wind out of your sails bro. Take the bastards to court, sue ’em for $500K and make another film with the money about the legal suit.

I’m curious to know if the fact they actually found the cartridges in New Mexico will change anything with the film.

Hi James, a lot of us down here in maryland are huge fans of yours, and my friends and I were wondering if the movie would be coming to theaters, specifically our home theater AMC Columbia 14, or if the movie is only going to be in certain areas of the country. I look forward to the movie, and I hope you take the time to answer my question, my email is [email protected]. thanks
