Cool video Mike! Awesome birthday surprise!
February 25, 2014 at 4:45 pm
Yay, new video! Tha-hanks !
February 25, 2014 at 4:57 pm
This game looks pretty cool. I’ll try it out.
February 25, 2014 at 5:34 pm
Woo! I was just asking about when you were going to post another review down in Glenside. Thanks again for the drawing on my old rental case.
February 25, 2014 at 6:04 pm
Liked that one. A bit too short but it satisfied my cinemassacre review shit for at least the next two hours.
February 25, 2014 at 6:19 pm
It may not be fair to categorize all Space shooters as having that R-Type feel, but this is in a similar vein… which is a great thing! Thanks for highlighting this. Every time I see a horizontal space shooter still on some blog I get giddy hoping the gameplay measures up (usually it doesn’t hold up, but I may be picky). I was a big fan of R-Type III in particular because it’s the one I had growing up (this being a predecessor of III of course). But the life/game over system was balls to the wall difficult.
February 25, 2014 at 6:34 pm
Gotta love the floating fridges in space 1:03
February 25, 2014 at 6:37 pm
I used to love playing Super EDF on SNES. You got to choose between a bunch of different weapons at the beginning of the stage that have completely different pros and cons and playstyles, and to level up your weapons you have to kill enemies to get experience. It’s pretty fun, and I recommend it.
February 25, 2014 at 7:33 pm
Good review, mike. I love a good shooter. BTW
Just seen the new Godzilla trailer looks awesome!
February 25, 2014 at 7:35 pm
Another game where the stages weren’t called stages was one quirky one I’ve always loved, Psychosis for TG16. In that game, in which your ship is a figment of your imagination and you’re trying to blah blah blah it’s all in your head, the stages are called “Causes.”
February 25, 2014 at 7:51 pm
I remember playing this in the arcade.
February 25, 2014 at 8:01 pm
Awesome review! say, what happened to that modded Gamegear you used for a review a while back? any chance for a few more game gear titles in the future?
February 25, 2014 at 8:48 pm
Nice dude sorta reminds me of Defender with a lil bit of Contra cause with the mixed weapons an all, life force was the shit thou man back in the day.
February 25, 2014 at 8:55 pm
Nice video, I’ll have to try this one. I was on a bit of a tear playing space shooters a couple of weeks ago, so this looks like another one I can complete and review…thanks!

It’s funny you posted a video game review on a Genesis game today, Mike. I saw this earlier today on Facebook. And it’s actually happening. Seth Rogen, who wrote a forward for the yet to be released book about the bitter rival between Nintendo and Sega, will be making a movie about that era in video gaming. http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/feb/25/why-a-nintendo-vs-sega-movie-is-a-great-idea?CMP=fb_gu
February 26, 2014 at 8:23 pm
Sounds good. Be awesome if James and Mike hooked up with Seth. The nerd should have a cameo in that movie. Let Seth know!
February 25, 2014 at 9:26 pm
Reminds me of EDF Earth Defense Force for the SNES.
February 25, 2014 at 9:50 pm
Great video! you know what else you should review? This great game called Zombies ate my neighbors.
February 25, 2014 at 10:12 pm
Cool game..I’ve never heard of it, kind of reminds me of
Bio hazard battle for genesis as well. Good review
February 25, 2014 at 11:55 pm
(Batman Theme 1989 (720p HQ Telarc)) type this 100% right on youtube
no mistakes in typing
February 26, 2014 at 12:03 am
Ha, I loved this game as a kid. I even mailed in for the free game glove that you could get for buying the game. Still own the glove actually.
February 26, 2014 at 12:08 am
Anyone else feels like Mike should have his own part of the website so he can upload more review like these? I mean it’s always fun to get on the site and watch a video we were not expecting just like this one, the sad thing is that it so rare to get a video from Mike, last one was about the Tanooki suit and I’m sure you guys would want more vids like this once a week. The AVGN movie is coming, but meanwhile let’s hope James and Mike have more stuff on the way because this site is my favorite by far. 😀 Thanks for the upload Mike!
February 26, 2014 at 1:50 am
Another great side scrolling shooter to review is Earth Defense Force for SNES.
February 26, 2014 at 2:09 am
I played Aero Blasters to death on the TG-16 back in the day. Loved the game to death, even though it was pretty impossible to beat without cheat codes. In more recent years I played Air Buster, which had a few minor differences. Overall I think I enjoy the feel of Aero Blasters better, but either version is a must-play for any fan of the 2D shooting genre.
Great review, Mike! Any chance we’ll see more 2D shooter reviews or ‘James & Mike Plays’ in the future at all? 🙂
February 26, 2014 at 2:19 am
You should try some of the Parodius shooters. They are weird and awesome. There are 3, if i recall correctly, one for SNES(but only european or japanese versions), one for the S Saturn and other for Playstation 1.
February 26, 2014 at 3:59 am
You’re damn right he should try them! Excluding ports, there are 5 Parodius games- Parodius, Parodius Da, Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius (forever with me), Gokujyou Parodius and Sexy Parodius, and the PSX port of Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius is one of my favourite games of all time.
February 26, 2014 at 5:49 am
It’s great to see you reviewing again, Mike!
February 26, 2014 at 5:52 am
Usually I’ve been busy editing James & Mike Mondays. But when I get time I’ll try and throw in other reviews.
February 26, 2014 at 7:03 am
Is it just me or does Mike look like he has a black eye?
Oh, and great review! Keep them commin!
February 26, 2014 at 9:38 am
I’ll have to look for this game. Seems very interesting
February 26, 2014 at 10:37 am
Oh god, it’s really hard to take those lasers as “too many” after just having dealt with Ichirin and Shou’s crazy lasers in U.F.O.
February 26, 2014 at 12:53 pm
Time to buy this game today. Everytime Mike does a review, the games price value seems to skyrocket. Looks great though and this is definitely something that slipped passed me as a kid.
February 26, 2014 at 12:54 pm
Great review, Mike! Thanks!
February 26, 2014 at 4:03 pm
Reminds me a lot of my favorite shooter, Empires of Steel, for the Megadrive.
February 26, 2014 at 4:31 pm
I’ll have to get the US version with the alternate title “Steel Empire”. Was unaware it was any good.
February 26, 2014 at 7:00 pm
It got released on the Genesis as “Steel Empire”. A must have!! A Great Shmup where you get to play as a blimp 🙂
February 26, 2014 at 4:38 pm
February 26, 2014 at 5:03 pm
Life Force is awesome, and the first Nintendo game I ever beat.UN Squadron on SNES is pretty solid. Thanks for the video!
February 26, 2014 at 6:58 pm
Great review Mike! I love this game!! A must have for Shmup fans! Although vets will find it a tad too easy, there are 3 difficulty levels
February 27, 2014 at 5:54 am
I love me a good scrolling shooter. I love Life Force. Honestly though, who doesn’t?
Another one of my favorites (in-home) is Darius Twin on snes. I never hear anyone talk about this one for some reason. It’s got awesome enemy design, very good boss battles, the music is actually pretty good (especially the first level), and is solid with two players. My favorite thing about it is that you don’t lose your upgrades when you take a hit. Although, there are no continues. I’ve played all the games in the series, but this is my favorite one.
February 27, 2014 at 10:53 pm
I got that Darius Twin for ￥100 (~$1 US) used when I was an exchange student in Japan in the mid 1990s. I agree that it is a good game.
February 27, 2014 at 10:59 am
I spent a lot quarters playing this game at the local arcade. Never saw it distributed for consoles where I live (southern europe). Lucky you … but anyway, I was damn good at it and took it seriously. Not like you amateur guys 😉
Another good shooter at the time was Sky Adventure from Alpha Denshi. Vertical instead of horizontal but also packed with action.
February 27, 2014 at 11:13 am
Btw, there was this aspect of the game that was very important. The best number of powerups to get was only 2. The idea was to shoot 3 lines of those small bullets. The rate of fire was much much higher. If you acquired more power ups than that, the rate of fire would slow down and it didn’t compensate. Regarding the secondary weapon: either missiles or the “S” (the two firing rods).
February 27, 2014 at 12:07 pm
Can you ask James to review the Feast trilogy for his next monster madness series?
February 28, 2014 at 12:36 am
Mike! Hey you have answered my back before, so maybe you’ll answer me again.
So I really like your reviews a lot! I like everything on Cinemassacre from anything James Rolfe! Have you and James ever thought about doing a show making a character solely on you? Like where you not Mike (James/Nerd).
Love the reviews from you, and maybe they will always be like this. Just wondering really!
February 28, 2014 at 12:48 am
February 28, 2014 at 2:32 am
Both you and James have mentioned Life Force, has there ever been a review done of that game on that site? I’d like to see that.
February 28, 2014 at 4:35 am
There’s a lot of fun shooters out there, but there’s one not so popular that obliterate ANY shooter in term of quality:
Radiant Silvergun for the Sega Saturn (Japan only)
So fun with a buddy too, people really should know about this awesome game.
February 28, 2014 at 10:10 am
The music in that game sounds really awesome.
February 28, 2014 at 10:25 am
Great review Mike. You sure know your stuff.
February 28, 2014 at 11:58 am
This game looks exactly like the flight-levels in Turrican 2, which was my favorite sidescroller back then (Amiga version: perfect sound(-track), graphics and gameplay. Does anybody know the reasons for this?
March 9, 2014 at 2:03 pm
As a Turrican II fan i hate to say it but it looks like Turrican dev Team had a look at this game and just copied the whole section, which is not a bad thing at all. Arcade release of Air Buster was in 1990 – Turrican II in 1991.
February 28, 2014 at 6:19 pm
Nice review! That game looks fun! By the way, if you want a great 2-player horizontal shooter, try Biohazard Battle! 🙂 It’s got some really good, original ideas, too.
February 28, 2014 at 11:48 pm
Hey, thanks. I’ll look into Biohazard Battle.
March 1, 2014 at 1:39 am
Very cool man! Hey i got a request for the game review The Immortal by Will Harvey from sega genesis or nes or amiga. Is a interesting game!!!!
March 2, 2014 at 2:23 pm
Cinemassacre Rocks. I’m going to buy the AVGN movie when it comes out, that and Street Fighter Assassin’s Fist.
March 3, 2014 at 3:59 pm
Nice review Mike, cool game. As for LIFEFORCE man I picked that up in a trade back in the day and had no idea what I was in for, a fantastic shooter which I thought was really impressive for the NES !
March 9, 2014 at 9:15 am
Great review Mike. But why plug other games while doing a review for another?
April 12, 2014 at 8:05 pm
not played that one but if its anything like gradius im sure i will love it!
April 26, 2014 at 8:35 am
Sega had the best shooters and also the hardest ones in their library.Nice game i have play that.
June 19, 2014 at 2:25 am
