http://www.cartoonstock.com/lowres/animals-turtle-tortoise-tortoise_s-shell-shell_s-vsh0189l.jpg – this is just as ridiculous …
December 17, 2013 at 5:50 pm
Very nice that the new one is up already (: Can’t wait for part 2! I’m sure both of these will be equally great!
December 17, 2013 at 5:56 pm
Great Episode James!
December 17, 2013 at 5:59 pm
Ahhh good memories. Those were times i beg my mom to get those games and toys right away in those books. LOL!
December 17, 2013 at 6:04 pm
when I was six I thought the joust in ‘Skate or Die’ was so cool! When I play it now, it sucks!
December 17, 2013 at 6:09 pm
Hey, I liked Sonic R!
December 18, 2013 at 6:40 am
Sonic R makes me throw up in my mouth a little =S Even as a kid I was fascinated by people who liked it. I did’t get it now, and I never will. But if you like it, well, game on!
Damn, new AVGN already? Awesome! Wasn’t expecting one before the 22nd or something.
December 17, 2013 at 6:18 pm
Did anyone else think ‘Sonic Spinball’ was AWESOME!?
December 17, 2013 at 6:23 pm
Dr. Eggman .. ugh! I don’t get why Dr. Robotnik was named that either! There’s only one Eggman and that’s Vincent Price!!! Eggcellent! 🙂
December 17, 2013 at 7:02 pm
Did you know that he was originally called Eggman in Japan? Just that the Americans felt that he needed a more menacing (Russian?) name. So why change it back? I’m not sure… Someone may have that answer.
December 17, 2013 at 8:36 pm
Edward – becasue the cold war is over ;P
December 17, 2013 at 8:48 pm
BTW “Robotnik” means “worker” in Polish. That was something which confuses me when I was a kid, playing Sonic. All the sudden there was a Polish word in Japanese game. 😉
December 17, 2013 at 6:36 pm
I actually prefer “Gorza” to “Gozer”. Sounds to me like it appeals more to the neutral gender of a god. I know it’s still wrong, though.
December 17, 2013 at 6:38 pm
James said “do kids just watch games nowadays?”. Yeah, that’s exactly what happened. Games like Heavy Rain are just 3d versions of that SegaCD/CDI crap, it’s just a movie with minimal player involvement. And yeah, sony fans go apeshit for that. Players became too dumb to succeed in actual games? Just make the game entirely of QTE shit and sell it as the next big thing, lol.
December 17, 2013 at 8:43 pm
I wouldn’t use word “nowadays”. Remeber Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2 on Sony consoles? It goes like that in this games: intro, codec, cutscene, codec, cutscene, codec, action, cutscene, codec, cutscene, action and so on.
December 17, 2013 at 10:33 pm
December 17, 2013 at 10:34 pm
Don’t forget the walking dead game too
December 22, 2013 at 3:06 pm
Actually, Heavy Rain is a modern take on classic point and click adventures; it’s also an excellent game, one of the best from this generation.
Heaven forbid story-driven games can coexist with gameplay-driven ones…
December 17, 2013 at 6:40 pm
Just signed up to post this comment – I’ve felt slightly dissatisfied with recent entries to the AVGN series overall, much preferring the older episodes and their drastically different vibe. However, this episode is a return to form and brought me the joy which the much older videos always do, so I wanted to say thanks for the hours of entertainment down the years! Looking forward to part 2!
December 17, 2013 at 6:41 pm
This may turn out to be one of the best two-part episodes you’ve ever done. Good job!
December 17, 2013 at 6:56 pm
I hace to stand for Shadow The Hedgehog. I love that game. I love it’s a “choose your own adventure”, but I don’t like that you have to complete all POSIBLE adventures in order to get to the final boss. The music is awesome.
Some history, Shadow appeared fist in Sonic Adventure 2 for Sega Dreamcast. I like a lot that game too, but Shadow The Hedgehog is better.
December 17, 2013 at 6:59 pm
They were trying for more replay value. Just like play all characters/teams before you can take on the SUPER BATTLE! or something…
December 17, 2013 at 6:57 pm
I think since Sonic Adventure, story tends to get quite confusing. Shadow makes his first appearance in Sonic Adventure 2. As for when more humans start to get mixed in, I THINK it is explained in one of the Sonic Advance games… *GASP* SEGA MASCOTT ON NINTENDO GAME BOY ADVANCE?!
December 17, 2013 at 7:00 pm
Awesome! Can’t wait for part 2!
December 17, 2013 at 7:31 pm
Thank you so much 🙂
I love those episodes with something non-videogame from the 80s thrown in like those catalogues…brings back so many nostalgic feelings.
You’re not the only one missing the “BI times” !
December 17, 2013 at 7:39 pm
awesome, great video!!!!
December 17, 2013 at 8:02 pm
I’m still holding out for the Bubsy Games!
December 17, 2013 at 8:15 pm
I always hated Sonic games, from the first one until the new ones, to me the gameplay is repetitive, the characters are stupid, and the later concepts inserted are ridiculous. I admit the first one was innovative and stuff, but Mario games are fantastic since the beginning, there are only a few bad Mario games, in my opinion even Alex Kidd games are way better than Sonic.
December 18, 2013 at 8:53 am
Some say Mario is evil. Check out Game Theory.
December 17, 2013 at 8:22 pm
December 17, 2013 at 8:25 pm
Definitely not first 😀
December 17, 2013 at 8:27 pm
Not first again
December 17, 2013 at 8:29 pm
For part 2, you really should play the original Tomb Raider, it’s SO BAD, trust me. Maybe the Angel of Darkness as well, that one was pretty glitchy.
December 17, 2013 at 8:39 pm
Grate video James 🙂
Can’t wait for part 3
December 17, 2013 at 8:40 pm
Great idea to make a video about all games that fans would like to see, which there is no much to say about them. I have no idea if I write this sentence corectly. Probably not. ;P
December 17, 2013 at 8:46 pm
Hey James, great video. I was just wondering, have you or Mike played Sonic Generations yet? The 2D sections are a throw back to the original Mega Drive games and have physics close to them (Also 2D Sonic is done in the original style instead of the new 3D style). They also remove the homing attack (at least on the 2D sections). The 3D sections are also a blast to play, and are way better than most of the other 3D Sonic games.
Anyway thanks for all the great videos you do, and all the passion you put into them.
December 17, 2013 at 8:57 pm
Quite saddened that you didnt show the lady on the beach showing her tits in the wheres waldo books.. Awesome anyways!! Been watching since 07 and you never get old!
December 17, 2013 at 9:06 pm
I still refused to call Doctor Robotnic the incorrect name Doctor eggman…. appernetly Yuji Naka saidthat “Robotnik” is the his true last name is Robotnic while “Eggman” is a nickname taken after the shape of his round body.. and since he was the programmer on the original game and a later producer of Sonic Team, .. so id say Doctor Robotnic is the correct name afterall.. because he said so… 😀
December 17, 2013 at 10:22 pm
I still think you should give the Sonic Adventure games a chance. They’re 3D Sonic games done right. Granted, they’re not perfect, but they’re still pretty good in my book. I also hope you get to Dragon Power since it’s a terrible Dragon Ball game as well as some Power Rangers games to honor the 20th Anniversary! Hey, Doug Walker did it, so why not James?
December 17, 2013 at 9:21 pm
Thanks for the nostalgia trip. And your critique of the catalogs was hilarious.
December 17, 2013 at 9:33 pm
Still love the nerd but need to bring the excitement and story back into the eps like it used to be
December 17, 2013 at 10:05 pm
Heh, that’s funny (and I don’t mean that in a dickish way) people used to bitch about THOSE episodes.
I have a theory I’ll get into some time about this. Basically, I think all the story episodes came from wanting to go back to his directing and naturally implementing that in AVGN episodes.
Now that he’s done the movie, which I think it was sort of an avgnaculation, it’s back to the more review centric episodes.
But who knows, if you think about it, people were upset that he was going to only do one episode a month, and then less, and then less, but really .. there is more content (especially of a variety) than I EVER remember being on this site 5-6 years ago.
December 18, 2013 at 8:31 pm
I think it’s about a balance. Some people prefer the side stories, some just want game footage and the accompanying frustration. Some want a mix. As long as every episode doesn’t skew towards one of those demographics, there’s something for everyone.
I just miss him getting real angry. Now they’re like calm, objective analysis of flaws. “WHY ARE THERE NO CONTINUES?!?!” type stuff has been toned down.
December 17, 2013 at 9:41 pm
Great idea for a Christmas episode! I was wondering what was going to happen, now that the bible game river had dried up. Kudos!
December 17, 2013 at 9:48 pm
lmao @ the ending.
December 17, 2013 at 9:51 pm
LOL love the last part. Thanks for an awesome episode James =) Cant wait for part 2!
December 17, 2013 at 10:01 pm
This is what I love about you. Just when people think they’ve seen you do everything you go off and do something like this!
This is by far one of the greatest AVGN episodes EVER and were anxiously awaiting pt. 2.
You’re the man, man.
December 17, 2013 at 10:13 pm
Hahah! I wanted to do a wishbook episode myself too bad I’m too late for that now. If it wasn’t for the Wishbook I NEVER would of had The Legend of Zelda.
So great, and I loved those wish books too. Can’t wait for the next part
December 17, 2013 at 10:53 pm
This is by far the best video about wish lists I’ve ever seen. And with James Rolfe, we can say that about a lot of things. Basically, whenever he does a video with a “concept X”, it’s usually one of the best if not the best video about “concept X”. I’m rarely disappointed on cinemassacre.com, high quality videos, and for free, thanks man !
December 17, 2013 at 11:26 pm
I actually liked shadow the hedgehog I thought it was a good fun game same goes for sonic adventure battle 1 & 2
December 17, 2013 at 11:32 pm
Wow this reminded me to the old AVGN episodes. Great one really fun to watch. I also had that waldo game. Didn’t seem so bad at the time.
wow you’ve been a busy beaver, there’s been multiple videos over the last few weeks
December 18, 2013 at 12:06 am
Thank you for this video James. Being 30, you and I grew up with pretty much all the same things. I remember those Sears, JCPenny, and numerous other “Wish List” catalogs. Some still exist to this day, but they don’t have the same magic they had in the 80s and early 90s. You brought back so many fond memories for me with this episode, you really made my day. I really can’t wait for part two. I hope it’s soon! : )
December 18, 2013 at 12:07 am
Holy shit! I had completely forgotten about those catalog books until you started showing them. I remember seeing them when I was kid with my mother at the department stores in the mall. This was a really well done episode. Cant wait for part two!
December 18, 2013 at 12:23 am
I liked that look at the old wish list catalogs, I used to peruse them myself. Good episode, but you and Mike doing Sonic 06 was more brutal!
December 18, 2013 at 1:06 am
Heh, I bet this review was partly inspired by my comment where I used the Sears Wish Book to call out the guy remembering $80 NES carts.
Either way, I only got to save a couple myself.
For the others, the best online source I’ve found is
Regrettably it seems to be down right now. 🙁
This is one curse of the internet. Centralized information vulnerable to loss by economics or censorship.
One of my favorite Wish Book flubs is Super Mario Bros 2. They use an SMB1 screenshot for it——and they repeat the same error EVERY YEAR! Even through 1991!
December 18, 2013 at 1:29 am
AHA! Here’s what I mean about SMB2 using the wrong screenshot.
1988 Sears Wish Book:
Also notice the infamous Zelda 2 delay below it with the conspicuous “SORRY, NOT AVAILABLE”. Many accused the delay of being artificial.
December 18, 2013 at 2:22 am
Sonic R is the shit.. Fuck you James! ^.^
December 18, 2013 at 2:39 am
Ok. For Part 2, I think Smurfs NES is really great one.
December 18, 2013 at 3:47 am
Karate Champ is actually awesome me and my buddy play it often on an emulator. I played it back in the arcade when I was like 8 and it was awesome then too. You just have to get used to it. Its actually two joysticks not buttons so you kinda need to think of it like that.
December 18, 2013 at 3:48 am
This games are so shitty they don’t even offer something to talk about for an entire episode.
Can’t wait for part 2, can Waldo be topped?
December 18, 2013 at 3:53 am
December 18, 2013 at 3:54 am
Also, fuck you James for dissing Bad Dudes. The arcade version of that game was my first girlfriend…
December 18, 2013 at 7:24 am
rock on nerd
December 18, 2013 at 8:08 am
Your reaction to a Sonic game on a Nintendo console….”WTH?” lol Same as mine back then.
Even though I’ve never played Shadow the Hedgehog, I actually like the character and his storyline.
Anywho, seeing those catalogs sure took me back. I used to do the same thing. We’d get the catalog, see the new toys and stuff…so nostalgic. Darn young whipper snappers. Don’t know how much fun it was to look through those catalogs. lol
December 18, 2013 at 8:41 am
Man, my childhood. <3
Here in Brazil it was illegal to show guns on such wishlists, and it was uncommon to see videogames until '95.
December 18, 2013 at 9:02 am
I don’t care who you are, these videos are pretty damn funny.
December 18, 2013 at 9:03 am
I already know you plan to review Bubsy series and one of my biggest requests to date. Spider-Man and X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge which I hate. Seriously this game is a fucking nightmare. Good luck reviewing that one James.
December 18, 2013 at 9:17 am
When I was a kid, I loved looking at the toy section in catalogs. I remember reading about the Video Now player in one of them. If there wasn’t something exciting in the catalogs for me, I would not look at it.
December 18, 2013 at 9:23 am
Wow!! Watching you flip through those wish books really took me back!! I sat and stared at those exact pages as a kid. And yes, I got Deadly Towers and Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde as gifts!
December 18, 2013 at 9:58 am
The arcade version of Bad Dudes is 100% better than the lame NES version but still not that high on the beat’em up meter. Hopefully I find one when I go to magfest and perhaps bump into you and mike(but it is a really big place and I’ll probably just be in line for hours)
December 18, 2013 at 10:08 am
good go I see those toys now and realize what a fucking dork I was…… was….. yeah was
December 18, 2013 at 1:17 pm
I don’t know about the NES version of Bad Dudes, but the arcade original is actually pretty badass, and it certainly passed the test of time with flying colors, I still play it very often
December 19, 2013 at 4:29 pm
It’s not a bad game…it’s just not a great game but the whole cheesy premise makes up for it’s ordanayness
December 18, 2013 at 1:54 pm
hey mother of all fucks!, please play Friday the 13th for THE C64!, it KILLS the NES version (yet it makes less sense) also it has scary images! you may soil your bugs bunnies!
Merry Christmas and Bah! Humbug!
December 18, 2013 at 2:30 pm
Surely the guys who made the Waldo game should have realised that the technology wasn’t there to make the game better than a static book?! And the book would have lasted a lot longer too.
December 18, 2013 at 4:39 pm
James, I’ve been a fan for a long time and I’ve watched every episode multiple times with my Wife. Why the hell are you so anti-gun? Is it really that bad for a kid to see a gun cabinet? Must be that New Jersey mentality sinking in, kinda sad to see you so blown away by the 2nd amendment….just had to ask because it really bothered me. There are families out there whose kids are young sportsmen and shoot guns often. I think you were sending the wrong message 🙁
December 25, 2013 at 4:13 am
I think he may be commenting more on how PC moms nowadays would shit their panties to have the kid flip the page and go from Mario to shotguns. You have a point about the East Coast though, so many out there go into hysterics just from looking at a gun. Out West it’s a tool, one you learn about the safety of use when you get old enough. Education dispels fear.
December 18, 2013 at 6:07 pm
i kinda thought “”shadow the hedgehog” was a good game. i enjoyed it alot.
December 18, 2013 at 6:53 pm
so did i
next wish list do lion king on snes… that fucking ostrich pisses me off every time!
December 18, 2013 at 7:05 pm
I had Skate or Die. What a bunch of ass. And the high jump was such a bitch. If you got stuck you had to tap buttons until you regained your momentum to finish your jumps. You couldn’t just quit and go back. AJHKJAHKDJHDSFIUHDoisjgoiadjhgoiwsuthao;srgfj!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah.
December 18, 2013 at 9:29 pm
Awesome episode, James. I really like the pace and that you give those catalogs proper screen time. And that Waldo game, hilarious! I can’t wait for part two to see which other games from the wish lists posted you will play.
December 18, 2013 at 10:23 pm
Sonic Gems collection. /add request.
More like sonic shit collection. With the exception of sonic CD, it has pretty much all the bad sonic games- including a fighting game.
That said, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 has a terrible story line, but they’re actually good 3d sonic games.
Shadow was just repetitive for over 300 endings in which 1 line is changed each time. Like making 300 different endings to terminator but instead of “I’ll be back” the line is “I’ll be returning” basically.
Not to mention, some of the stages were so difficult and the design so flawed, that if you screwed up once and returned to the checkpoint, you were better off just restarting the level. (Generally the ones that require you to destroy a spaceship/airplane)
December 18, 2013 at 10:28 pm
Oh man James you brought back so many memories with the catalogs
I remember as a kid waiting for my brother to get done looking at it so I could go through and put a star by or circle the stuff I wanted
Definitely an exciting time as a kid
December 18, 2013 at 11:20 pm
Why not Sonic ’06 in the Bad Sonic Games list?
A incomplete game released for PS3/X360 with great potential, but a LOT of glitches and terrible gameplay problems.
The game could be so much better without that city thing too.
Also, love that James & Mike Mondays episode lol.
December 19, 2013 at 3:03 am
Nice vid but I’ve got to take some exceptions on some things.
1. Bad Dudes holds up great! It’s still just as fun today. It’s a 2d beat-em-up, not a 2 3/4D one, so you can’t fairly compare it to final fight.
2. Although Karate Champ indeed sucks, the controls are pretty easy to figure out. It’s far easier if you’ve ever played the arcade version, which has two joysticks.
3. All Sonic games suck… every one of them. I’m not saying they are terrible, but they aren’t very good either. It’s a flawed concept….Sonic himself is designed to quickly travel around the screen and yet you don’t have a lot of control over stopping him and the camera is too slow, resulting in Sonic hitting an enemy/obstacle every few seconds, putting him into a full stop, which means you have to back-track to build up steam again. It would be like if Mario games had hidden spikes on every other brick so you couldn’t jump freely. Sonic is fun when he’s moving and the entire stage is designed to slow him down.
December 19, 2013 at 12:38 pm
The challenge of Sonic is moving at those high speeds while still avoiding obstacles/enemies and collecting rings/power-ups and entering chaos emerald stages. You don’t EVER need to backtrack if you’re playing the game properly.
December 19, 2013 at 6:51 am
Haha, I hate the Unprogrammed Area of Limbo too 😀
December 19, 2013 at 8:56 am
Holy shit did that bring back memories! I remember those catalogs vividly. Sears, Service Merchandise, etc. I circled whatever I wanted in toys and video games. Good times! As always James, you are the king of nostalgia (don’t let The Critic see this! No offense Doug!) and love the strolls down memory lane! Happy, Healty, Holidays to you and your family! Can’t wait for my AVGN and Board James dvds to arrive! Rock on!
December 19, 2013 at 9:45 am
At the end, when Nerd stated “I’m going to go get the games,” I was waiting for him to grab a box of laxatives and walk to the bathroom.
December 19, 2013 at 9:59 am
Man that was so true.I alway’s used Jc Penny Catalog to get my Christmas.I hope if not on part 2,That James will do The Goonies 2 NES Game.I bet he can do alot with that game,Esp tie it in with the Movie,But,The Movie is a Classic,But the Game was Crap. That is my Wishlist
December 19, 2013 at 3:23 pm
The part at the end about getting the games was freaking hilarious, lmao! Great job as always! Look forward to part 2 🙂
December 19, 2013 at 3:47 pm
They’re not really bad games… but very frustrating to some, and I remember you stating at one point that you really suck at them and that you are not a big fan… but it would be interesting to see you take on some of the Adventure games on console like Maniac Mansion, Deja Vu, Shadowgate, The Uninvited, ect
December 19, 2013 at 4:17 pm
looking at those wish lists books, goes to show you how much better the times were as a kid.
December 19, 2013 at 5:17 pm
Love all the videos you do James, been a fan for some years now. Merry Christmas to you and your family and Mike 🙂 /Carl Sweden
December 19, 2013 at 9:51 pm
Sonic R on PC was the shit when i was a kid, fuck man. Feelings :'(
BUT I RUINED IT FOREVER BY CHANGING THE LANGUAGE TO JAPANESE. I WAS NEVER ABLE TO CHANGE IT BACK AND DIDN’T KNOW SHIT.
December 20, 2013 at 3:33 am
For a time, I thought you will go all the way through the xbox 360 version of sonic (Sonic ’06)=the worst! Glad you didn’t. After all, you are supposed to take us back to the past even if nowadays, there is some shitty games that suck ass!
December 20, 2013 at 10:50 am
I love the hell out of the part where James is sifting through the catalog — I remember seeing those same pictures of toys. I never realized I wasn’t the only one who had seen them.
December 20, 2013 at 11:24 am
Aah no Tintin? Oh well, i enjoy the videos.
Try next time the Europe games, they are so bad you don’t even wanna touch the controls anymore.
December 20, 2013 at 2:36 pm
Did I just see the Nintendo NES Zapper amongst the real guns?!?!?
Or did they make a real gun based upon the NES Zapper!?
I don’t know what’s worse!
December 20, 2013 at 10:52 pm
I shit myself laughing at the end!
December 21, 2013 at 5:52 pm
I would rather be gifted any of those sweet guns instead of all those shitty games.
December 22, 2013 at 6:12 pm
Too funny 😛 I agree with you on those old catalogues, what a trip down memory lane! I remember our mother not allowing us to circle inside the magazines themselves, so we had to get a piece of notebook paper and manually write each item down instead 😛
December 23, 2013 at 1:14 pm
Wow… The part with the catalogues is amazing. Thank you, James! Love from Germany! <3
December 24, 2013 at 12:44 pm
Your reproducer is shit
