I wonder if the nerd still lives in NJ? I lived in the same neighborhood as were he used to be apparently, according to my friend at work… Currently I moved 15 minutes away from there now but I still go to Cherry Hill for all my retro games. I wish I had known before he became a celebrity, Hes my favorite internet success. Ive been there from day 1 and im a huge fan dude, Keep it up James!

    • November 19, 2013 at 11:24 pm

OMG, a research breakthrough, a free wine reception, AND a new AVGN episode just before going to bed. Can this day get any better?

    This was awesome

  • Sirius

    November 19, 2013 at 11:32 pm

    That was awesome indeed.
I almost bought that newest AVGN game, but since I heard it was a cheap-death-fest, I gave up. I know it’s designed to be like the games you reviewed, but that doesn’t really make it fun.

You gotta make it genuinely challenging without cheapness, à la Super Meat Boy which is a masterpiece.

    Anyway, awesome episode. 🙂

    • Jarnor23

      November 20, 2013 at 3:11 am

What makes it fun is not only it being designed like that, but to learn patterns, get good, and overcome the challenges. Worked for me.

    • Benoit Dussault

      November 23, 2013 at 12:54 am

I loved Super Meat Boy and I think this game is great too. It’s not “designed to be like the games he reviewed”. It’s a Megaman clone with levels themed like the games he reviewed. The gameplay is actually pretty good and if you are a fan of the Nerd, all the inside jokes are just icing on the cake.

Really? wow, I barely made i through on normal!

  • November 20, 2013 at 12:33 am

this episode was fucking hilarious. the wierd thing is some of the episodes this season have been some of the lesser quality avgn episodes (Toxy Avenger, Bible Games 3, Alien 3) but others have been amazing (Ikari Warriors, Atari Sports, Tiger Games).

Considering how many episodes you have made James, you do an amazing job of keeping the episodes fresh. Thanks and Good luck with the movie. Can’t wait to buy Vol. 7

Hey James if you want to play ANY game on pc with a controller you should really get Xpadder it lets you use any controller you connect to your computer by allowing you to custom set the inputs.

  • November 20, 2013 at 1:28 am

    November 20, 2013 at 1:56 am

There´s a problem with the video capture? the bottom screen part of the last game looks corrupted 🙁

    • November 20, 2013 at 10:01 am

Yes, it took Mike an entire month to figure out how to capture gameplay on a PC and transfer it over to my Mac to edit. It was a technical nightmare. We were lucky to get it at all.

  • mysterywolf

    November 20, 2013 at 2:08 am

I’m curious about the first game. Did they ask you to voice it? Or did they just edit the voices.

That said though, it’s easy to make games. (I myself program games on Steam. Haven’t made an AVGN related one, but I’d love to some day.) So there’s only going to be more AVGN games!

    • November 20, 2013 at 10:03 am

Yeah, a few of those game developers had me record voices. In fact, there’s a brief improv video of me as the Nerd if you beat the Eric Ruth game.

  • November 20, 2013 at 2:37 am

I wonder whats the ending on Angry video game nerd vs the wily wars

  • November 20, 2013 at 2:38 am

Was the Fringe reference intended? (@17:45)

  • November 20, 2013 at 2:41 am

I know this is ultimately an advert for the AVGN Game (which I pre-ordered) but that still doesn’t subtract from the fact that James and Cinemassacre have some of the most loyal and passionate fans on the internet. Much respect and THANKS for all the laughs.

    • November 20, 2013 at 10:03 am

Thanks, very true. I hope they all enjoy seeing the Nerd play their games.

  • November 20, 2013 at 2:57 am

    Hey All,

I’m the guy who made AVGN in Pixel Land Blast, (the second game in the video), and I just wanted to say that I LOVED this episode and all it’s references and in jokes. When I finished the game and emailed it to James I always hoped that he would make a video making fun of it and the other fan games. Now that he has I couldn’t be happier. It’s so cool to be a part of AVGN even if small and indirectly. Can’t wait to buy the DVD with this episode and I can’t wait for the AVGN Movie!

Thank you James, Mike, and everyone who helps with Cinemassacre!

    • November 20, 2013 at 10:07 am

Thanks a lot, glad you liked it! I remember the game back in 2008. It was a trip playing it again, after all these years.

  • November 20, 2013 at 3:07 am

Ha, Golden Sun battle music while fighting Bugs Bunny.

  • November 20, 2013 at 3:15 am

Epic as shit. Nerd playing nerd games with a impromptu board james thrown in. Refer back to the first sentence.

  • November 20, 2013 at 3:41 am

Ahahahaha, no hard copies nerd you can’t get your anger in a physical way with modern pc games. Ahahahahahahah, it was amazing.

Board James, the phone and the prison!
The giant Claw, the size of a battleship!

I say it all the time, but seriously James keep it up please! I love the site, the vids and we do feel like we are part of this crazy AVGN adventure.

Also, thanks Mike and Kyle! You guys are also hilarious and really fun to watch!

Can’t wait for more Board James and I’m even excited about next halloween just because of Monster Madness!

    Take care guys!

I’ve been a nerd fan for a couple of years, but I never made an account on here. This episode was so fucking awesome that I felt the need to register just to comment. Seriously one of the absolute best I have ever seen, it had me rolling. Nerd, you’re fuckin awesome.

  • November 20, 2013 at 8:53 am

That is awesome !!!… The battle music against Bugs Bunny and Jason in “AVGN Planet” is the battle music from “Golden Sun” for the GBA !!!…

  • November 20, 2013 at 9:29 am

Wow. That last AVGN game looks harder than a triceratops turd. But you’re totally right, the music is pretty fucking rad! I just might have to try that game out.

  • rydamusprime

    November 20, 2013 at 10:03 am

im not sure if Fred Fuchs is actually the name of a game programmer or not but i know he was a (possibly the) producer for the movie Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which was why his name was in the video game that the Nerd reviewed…. if that is the case isn’t he being the last boss in the game a complete error?

i just thought it was interesting to point out

    • frostare

      November 21, 2013 at 10:24 am

Well, it’s still relevant because there was an episode where the nerd said “who the fuck programmed this? Maybe it was Fred Fuchs” or something like that, and I guess “Fred Fucks”, the real name of the end boss, was a parody of that and not the real person.

  • November 20, 2013 at 10:32 am

Unsipible commertial 2 minutes long it a bit too much.. WAY to much

  • Fred . Fuchs

    November 20, 2013 at 10:42 am

Awesome episode. The Atari cartridge is fantastic. Yeah, Board James, I was expecting him after Bullshit Man and Monster MAdness in AVGN episodes.
But why isn’t it on YouTube or on top of the page? I could have miss it.

    • Fred . Fuchs

Wow 😀 This was the BEST episode to come out in a WHILE. Fuckin’ excellent, James! 🙂 and the Dream Phone reference had me rolling on the floor! “It wasn’t me, it wasn’t me! It was the Fuckin’ Phone!”

    November 20, 2013 at 11:46 am

As always brilliant to have both a mind fuck, an AVGN review and AVGN games-> In one episode – Amazed that some actually took the time to create cartridges, dedication. 🙂 Though I guess that dedication is a result of your dedication to the fans, both working at what you enjoy and to satisfy our demands.
A month to get it working, damn. I stick with windows, but I admire the effort.

Also thanks for this, it cheers one up immensely and rejuvenate the spirit by spreading humor and laughs.
Keep it up and good luck with the movie!

“”Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie”-The Game”

  • November 20, 2013 at 12:29 pm

Never heard of these games before. This was based off of AVGN. I’ll have to try it someday. I never knew that there was a homebrew version called “Mega Man 2” entitled “AVGNVs. Dr. wily”. What’s next? The Tiger handheld version of “AVGN Vs. Dr. Wily”, let Hasbro do its thing and remake the handheld version with the Tiger style handheld design, or maybe a new game called “AVGN the GoAnimate Edition” featuring characters from the GoAnimate world a and AVGN will end up being grounded. Just kidding! 😀

  • frostare

    November 20, 2013 at 1:05 pm

Another reference that the Nerd is clearly not James Rolfe! Conveniently the first reference I found is reviewed here: The AVGN Game Over where the Nerd says: “STAGE 5 JAMES’ QUEST! Who the fuck is James, like James Bond?” Wow, I am a nerd’s nerd

  • dcco

    November 20, 2013 at 1:07 pm

Hahhaha I’ve been waiting to see more of Board James. Also I laughed when the AVGN didn’t know who Mike was ahahahahahah.

    November 20, 2013 at 1:07 pm

FINALLY! Loved this episode! I know what you mean about the hand-over-hand technique! I have to play like that everytime! It’s a real shame that you didnt get to play more of AVGN Game Over. It was the first game that I played with the hand over hand keyboard technique, but after I started playing I couldn’t stop! i love it! The story was awesome!

So good. My faith in AVGN has been restored.

There is so much love in these fan games, I think they should be compiled, Action 52 style, flaws and all (maybe fix a little AVGN Game Over, so at least you can play the whole thing). Also, game companies should take notes: best advertising ever for a video game.

HOLY SHIT. The clock here in Finland, Vaasa is about 1:00 AM and I’m watching episode like 5th (maybe 6th?) time. BECAUSE THIS EPISODE IS JUST ABOUT TO BE SO FUCKIN’ DIVINE! Seriously! Also I have been AVGN’s/Cinemassacre’s fan when the world was created by The God, James Rolfe.

Thanks James for everything all the work you have done. From Finland with love! Eläköön Kuningas, James!

LOVED the AVGN/Board James cross-over! I can only imagine how much time it must have taken to make some of those video games. As for the Monopoly game, I thought they were very clever and funny.

When it comes to your newest games, Man, I wish I had a Wii or a better computer. It looks like a Great Way to waste time! Any game were you ride a shark is Genius in my books. I just wish you could get it for Xbox. 🙁 Can’t wait for the next Episode!

  • Solo187

    November 20, 2013 at 7:56 pm

Im puzzled by the first game. You say its on a c64 but it looks way to good for a c64. Theres to many colours & the sprites look to big. Plus the digitised sound aswell. Its to clear & theres to much of it. c64 only had 64k. theres to much going on. Commodore amiga at a push, But not on c64. Atleast not a real c64. whats the deal?

    • Solo187

      November 20, 2013 at 8:05 pm

Ah i see.. Its on pc. I knew it was way to good for c64 lol. i just saw the start but now ive watched the rest of the video..

    • November 21, 2013 at 1:27 pm

Have you played Turrican or Turrican 2 on C64? These have ginormous boss sprites (especially T2) and lots of shit going on on the screen. (yeah, only a few seconds of digi sound) (btw. smooth scrolling in youtube videos… doesn’t exist)

No big sprites? The hardware reference states that NES has 8×8 pixel sprites and C64 has 24×21 pixel sprites.
Games like Megaman create huge moving sprites by actually moving parts of the background via a special (but pretty simple) chip inside the cartridge. The C64 doesn’t need that.

Angry Video Game would run on C64 with (barely noticeably) less colours and way less digitised sound (unless you run it off an SD card, hehe)

BOARD JAMES!!!! YEEESSS!!! Finally, I always wanted him to meet the Nerd, and I love that it was in continuity with the the Dream Phone episode (I was starting to worry that was supposed to be Board James last episode because of the ending).

The first game by Eric Ruth is really good, I always loved that game and I thought the in-game narration was a nice detail.

I like that you pointed out that Mike hasn’t appeared in the AVGN videos as himself, so the character of the Nerd is not supposed to know him (but then again, Mike was Board James’ friend, and he appeared in this video… uh, oh whatever xD like the Nerd says, wrap your head around that).

I loved the Nerd using only old technology, he’s seriously hardcore retro 😛

You know, I was waiting to buy the AVGN Adventures game, because I don’t have much time to play it right now, but this video just made me want to go and buy it right now, it looks so good!

When I read the title, I thought this was going to get weird and meta, but this was really well done, you found a way to have the character review all those games about himself without having to get out of character (except for the moment you admitted being playing in a modern PC, but that was acceptable and didn’t take much time).

    Excellent episode!

    • frostare

      November 21, 2013 at 3:40 am

Everything you said, my thoughts exactly! I’m kinda scared that you even mentioned the hardcore retro part (using the Commodore 64 and the old-fashioned phone to play), the Motherfucker Mike part AND admitting been playing on a modern PC I didn’t feel the fourth wall breaking part til that but, as you say, it was OK. He’s not stuck in the past, just loves retro stuff (we’ve seen him playing GTA IV and more modern Godzilla games).

    • mysterywolf

      November 21, 2013 at 10:11 pm

We really do need more Board James. I remember one episode had a Zelda Board Game? That’d be worth an episode right there I’d imagine. Or at least perhaps ‘NES Board games’ as there’s surely more than just that one.

      • Jarnor23

        January 18, 2014 at 2:18 am

There is, there’s the Super Mario Brothers board game. If you want to count them on the technicality that these games existed on NES (even if not originally on it), there were Pac-Man and Donkey Kong board games too.

We had all of the above. Really into board games, RPG games now and back then. Zelda was an ultra simple RPG style game on a board map. Good stuff for a kid.

Funny episode, loved the Board James cameo. Also funny how you were like you didn’t know a Mike person. I thought about it, and no, he’s never been in an AVGN episode as himself. Sadly, I really want to play that game now. You sneaky bastard! Reviewing your own game provides a great AVGN episode and a way to promote what looks like a cool game.

I’d just like to point out, that you CAN shoot straight in The Angry Video Game. Can’t remember which button it is right now, but its there right next to the shoot upward – button. And the shark boss is about the hardest part of the game, but once you get past it there are many awesome levels to play. Heck, I liked it anyway.

  • November 21, 2013 at 5:38 am

james’ script writing and direction is once again great. very entertaining episode although i would never buy such a hard game. it’s a shame. at least have a purposely built in “easy mode” for gamers who don’t want to deal with game over and constant deaths. we aren’t 10 anymore. our skills are long gone and we don’t have time to sit around to learn patterns all day. please take that into account when you do a part 2 of an avgn game.

OK I know this has already been said, but MAN am I glad the original theme song is back. I like how raw it is. Good stuff Kyle. Oh yeah – I do enjoy all the remixes and stuff as well (the metal one at the end of an AVGN video was my favorite; can’t remember which one). Anyway later guys

  • November 21, 2013 at 1:38 pm

  • Lodmot

    November 22, 2013 at 12:18 am

Dude…… I couldn’t believe it when I was watching you review my game. XDD It was really surreal. I love the comment you made about the different game consoles being in an Atari game xDD The other games in this video were brilliant also, so I’d like to give a shoutout to those guys who worked on them. ^^ They honestly were WAY better than mine was, and I admit to that. LOL!

All your videos never cease to make me laugh, and make me happy in general. And I really hope this isn’t the last AVGN episode ><

    Good luck man, and Happy Thanksgiving! o;

    • November 22, 2013 at 1:50 am

        November 22, 2013 at 8:30 am

xD Well, I did use a sort of basic programming language called VisualBB, which made it easier to program than just strict 6502 ASM. VbB gave me a few tools to help draw sprites and make the titlescreen, but beyond that I still had to program everything else.

    NICE work

  • November 22, 2013 at 3:56 am

I’ve been waiting for this forever! To me, this is the most enjoyable episode yet!

Too bad that the original GAME OVER kept crashing, that was was the best experience I ever had playing a game. Not just because it featured a music track I submitted but I got to play as basically my fucking hero, the nerd, kicking old- school video game ass to an entire awesome soundtrack.

  • November 22, 2013 at 5:08 am

AVGN isn’t really AVGN anymore. I still love the episodes, don’t get me wrong. But the more and more that get released, the further out of character James goes with The Nerd. Hell, we had a “let’s be serious for a second” moment… Really, Nerd?!

Again, I still like these episodes… They have just deviated fairly drastically and that’s unfortunate. Although maybe that means James will break out of his comfort zone with the really old games, as he did in this episode. Maybe it was just a shameless plug, I don’t know…

The Nerd is nothing but a distant memory…

On the Metroid game did anyone else notice the Golden Sun batle theme on the bugs buuny battle?

  • BRTD

    November 22, 2013 at 12:39 pm

I laughed at least three times and then i started to clap my hands in approval (when THE BATTLESHIP appeared)))) and then i noticed there are tears in my eyes and still i couldn’t stop laughing))))))
not only it is ingeniously hilarious, it’s also incredibly inspiring!!
that monopoly-like game is so creative and the fact than you’re in megaman is also like a dream come true..

here’s the list of moments i loved the most: (SPOILERS AHEAD!!!)

    – Atari game (“I look good!”)
    – indestructible Jason!))
    – the joke about the PHONE (real PHONE, YEAH!!)))
    – Giant Clow PATTERN and constant BATTLESHIP reference)))
    – FRED!))))) and that epic delete)))))

this is by far my favorite episode, well done!!!!!!

p.s. i also love how the continuity of series is intact, it IS the past and all the characters are consistent….
this is actually a phenomenal thing!
to think about it – you complained about it and then it came true in such a hilarious yet enjoyable way….
    i’m speechless…seriously…..

Wow, I used to think this show was really funny. This was fucking terrible though. The concept to review games based on his image was tacky and the jokes in this were garbage.

The fucking jokes are even worse. LOL, I can’t wait to see how pathetic his movie turns out.

Oh yeah, AVGN Adventures. I bought it a couple of weeks before christmas, and then had quite a fun christmas evening playing it while sharing the experience with my brother. I did manage to get all the way to the final boss during said evening… but it did take a lot of effort. And dying. Lots and lots of dying. My thoughts on the game overall? Well, it’s a classic platformer, it has awesome music, great gameplay, super-responsive controls, and it’s quite addicting. And of course, as a throwback to the classic 8-bit days, it is hard as fuck.

  • Ben_from_G-town

    January 24, 2014 at 6:00 am

Those games were all pretty cool, but the best one was last. I can see that the developer made it as obnoxiously hard as possible. 😀 I don’t know if I could beat that game, but it sure is a cool tribute to AVGN. Great games, and great review!

  • February 20, 2014 at 6:25 pm

James, I got AVGN adventures the day it came out and I have been enjoying it (Didn’t get a whole lot of time over the holidays to play and just getting back into it) I’m not on the LJN stage…and DAMN is it hard. Have you legitimately beaten this game? Mike?

If anyone is interested in playing Angry Video Game Nerd vs Dr. Wily on an NES Emulator, all explain to you how to patch the Mega Man 2 zip file. First off you’ll need to download, and install as NES Emulator. Then you download the Mega Man 2 NES Rom, and extract it with Winzip, or 7-zip. Next you’ll download the AVGN patch http://forums.screwattack.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=18182, and extract that as well. Now in order to patch the rom you’ll need another free program called Luner IPS. After you download the Luner IPS here are the exact steps.

How to use a Patch on NES Emulator?

Step 1 – Download Lunar IPS File then open it.
Step 2 – Click on “Apply IPS Patch”.
Step 3 – Find AVGN VS Dr. Wily IPS File then click on it.
Step 4 – Find Mega Man 2 Rom File then click on it.
Step 5 – Exit Lunar IPS File.
Step 6 – Open your NES Emulater.
Step 7 – Go to File then click on Load.
Step 8 – Find Mega Man 2 Rom File then click on it.
