October 30, 2013 at 3:16 am
Glad I waited up for this, thanks for the review James!
October 30, 2013 at 2:23 pm
james, you should do your own version of monstervision, where maybe once every week or two you put up a classic movie full length, and then just do an intro and maybe a few short commercial breaks similar to the host on tnt whos name escapes me. Its something you could knock out quick if you wanted by just standing in front of the “movie store” like you’ve been doing with your reviews. It would be a really cool way to continue the legacy of monster vision while introducing many new people to the classics, movies that I only know of because of monster madness. I know that your busy, but Id like to be the first to nominate CINE-MONSTER VISION! even if only the one a month. im already sad monster madness is almost done. LOVE YOU JAMES!!
October 30, 2013 at 2:41 pm
I doubt he wants to be sued.
October 30, 2013 at 3:06 pm
October 30, 2013 at 4:13 pm
Why not just record the audio of the commentary and make it so people can listen to it over their own copy of the movie?
October 30, 2013 at 5:19 pm
THIS IS A GREAT IDEA!
a podcast of sorts, but to be listened while watching a movie
October 30, 2013 at 6:15 pm
There are a lot of public domain horror movies.
October 31, 2013 at 1:36 am
That is a Rifftrak. That is common on the internet, someone doing the audio and you play it over the movie. They are usually about 2-3 dollars. Weird Al has even done them.
October 30, 2013 at 3:17 am
Man, didn’t know there were so many Ramero zombie films!
October 30, 2013 at 10:17 am
me either I just knew about the first three then the remakes
October 30, 2013 at 3:19 am
Only one more.. then its a whole year till more monster madness :<
October 30, 2013 at 5:27 pm
Cheer up, it’s not actually one year, it’s only 11 months!
October 30, 2013 at 3:21 am
YAY CHRIS CHECK IT OUT!!!
October 30, 2013 at 3:25 am
Full length commentary?! Can’t wait – awesome 🙂 Will Mike be joining you?
October 31, 2013 at 1:15 am
Yeesssss, it’s gonna be great!
October 30, 2013 at 3:26 am
October 30, 2013 at 3:37 am
Oh wow, I get it now, your making fun of first! wow, your a freaking genius!! To bad you cant actually do it
October 30, 2013 at 5:29 am
Poor Kenny has a butthurt. 🙁
October 30, 2013 at 6:02 am
October 30, 2013 at 7:56 am
Too bad “first” comments don’t just get deleted, although I can’t figure out why.
October 30, 2013 at 3:29 am
IT’S CINEMASSACRE’S ZOMBIE MADNESS!
October 30, 2013 at 3:30 am
Holy shit, I am so excited for tomorrow! Thanks for all you’ve done
October 30, 2013 at 4:41 am
Same! I am super excited. Thanks James. Hope the baby’s well- we just had our first, too- in August. Named Robin after Batman’s Robin 🙂
October 30, 2013 at 3:35 am
October 30, 2013 at 4:27 am
That’d be awesome! Even just public domain movies would work!
October 31, 2013 at 1:53 am
Brilliant idea. I haven’t seen monstervision, but I’ve been enjoying the TCM Friday night spotlights this month where they do something similiar. James would be an awesome host for this!
October 30, 2013 at 3:38 am
I wish he reviewed 28 Days Later. An extraordinary movie.
October 30, 2013 at 3:49 am
I can’t wait for the commentary. I don’t really have anyone i know that wants to watch night of the living dead with. The only thing they want is Child’s Play And Nightmare on elm street 🙂
October 30, 2013 at 3:50 am
Monster Madness is the best series on Youtube.
October 30, 2013 at 4:26 am
Wow, I completely forgot about this one. Alot of the effects look like they came out of Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
So this will be twice this year I’ll watch the original Night of the Living Dead with commentary; watched the Live Rifftrax last week. It was great in the theater where some people hadn’t seen it before. The gasps of horror at the end were priceless. I’m sure you’ll take a more acedemic and informitive approach to the commentary, so I’m definitely looking forward to it.
October 30, 2013 at 4:58 am
I really didn’t know what to expect with this film. I hated land of the dead, but thought the diary was ok but not spectacular. Like james said its got a cowboy feel to it and its just ok. The thing that makes me really hate this movie is that once again the main and most immediate threat isn’t zombies. Almost as if they were again just thrown into a story that he really wanted to do alone but couldn’t because he’s known for zombie movies. And this stupid idea that they can get zombies to eat something rather than people. They have this one zombie that they all agree is different from the rest, and they try to train her to eat something besides humans. They go on and on about if they can just get her to eat something else everything is solved. Then at the very very end its revealed that in fact this zombie did start to eat something else and the problem could have been solved. But they make this HUGE leap. They spend the whole movie trying to get this one special zombie to eat anything but people. How exactly does this actually solve anything? OK so 1 special zombie did it. But she was special, most zombies aren’t. So right there you cant save a huge majority of the zombie populace. Then even if they are a special zombie that will learn this new behavior it took the whole damn movie to just get ONE zombie to do it. Are we going to go through this process for every zombie on earth now? And would we survive trying to do it? This has got to be one of the worst thought out solutions to the zombie apocalypse. Romero made classics, but like George lucas the magic ended after the original fantastic trilogy. While the other films can hold up on there own at times, nothing beats the original trilogies. And full-length commentaries are my favorite thing you guys do. I actually have a site where I do just that and know how time consuming it can be at times. Thanks for another epic monster madness again this year!
FULL. LENGHT. COMMENTARY. And Stefano dies, but i returned as conscient zombie so it’s all ok…i just need to eat…often…
October 30, 2013 at 5:34 am
This one was so, so awful. Like, daytime made-for-Sci-Fi-channel-movie-bad. Hard to believe that Romero was responsible for it. :\
October 30, 2013 at 5:45 am
PLEASE HAVE MIKE ON THE COMMENTARY!!! I love the dynamic between you two. THANKS AGAIN FOR MONSTER MADNESS AGAIN THIS YEAR. Cinemassacre videos marks some of the best moments in the years of my life. Thank you so much again. – Bart
October 30, 2013 at 5:50 am
Great review James! This film’s okay, but it’s also so unforgettable. The problem with this film, in my opinion, is that there are no zombie tension. There’s absolutely no danger. You don’t feel like there might be a zombie shuffling up quietly behind you any minute, and taking the tiniest nibble off of your neck. Which should be enough to infect you. Watch it if you want, but do not expect anything great.
By the way, I did a bit of volunteer promotion of Monster Madness this month, for example on Facebook. On the Facebook group The Living Dead Festival for example. I believe some of the members there know George A. Romero personally or have met them. I am so excited for the Night of the Living Dead audio commentary tomorrow, and I am sure everybody else is as excited!
October 30, 2013 at 10:14 am
See, i think the reason there is not a lot of zombie tension (I did think there was some in the swimming scene, but i digress) is because the initial shock of the zombie apocalypse is over. The greatest strength we have as human beings is our ability to adapt, and i think that’s what has happened here. I mean, fer cryin’ out loud the dispute is over whether we should kill the undead or chain them up and live with them, so i think that right there implies that we are getting USED to wandering the earth with zombies around, so there isn’t really that level of fear anymore, know what i mean?
January 8, 2014 at 6:49 am
Yeah, I know what you mean actually. But the thing is, with a plot like that, I expected Romero to go with a bit more of a dark comedy direction. That would have helped the film greatly in my opinion. Terry Gilliam-esque dark humor, specifically. The same kind we see in Brazil perhaps. It would have been so funny, and scary at the same time. Much scarier than the initial film we got.
October 30, 2013 at 5:51 am
This was new to me, thank you James
October 30, 2013 at 5:55 am
I haven’t seen this one, in fact, I only discovered it just recently. I will say this, it does look better than Diary of the Dead. I’ll have to see for myself. Shame Romero didn’t use more of the classic practical effects that helped give the original trilogy such a unique feeling.
October 30, 2013 at 6:06 am
Knowing your review was coming actually prompted me to FINALLY watch this one last night. Pretty much agree with your review, it’s an interesting setting and concept, but not really realized to it’s fullest. Still, given the micro-budget, it looks decent and wasn’t boring. An OK entry.
October 30, 2013 at 6:35 am
Fuckin full length commentary man!? FUCK YEAH!!!
October 30, 2013 at 6:49 am
NOTLD… one thing I wish you’d bring up sometime is the 30th Anniv version with all the poorly added new footage. That is how you take a great movie and ruin it.
October 30, 2013 at 6:54 am
Ooooh, full length commentary, FUCK YEAH!!!
October 30, 2013 at 7:03 am
Nice way to end Monster Madness with a full length review of one of the most important horror films ever made. Nice James, nice. Plus I haven’t seen it so it will be a good movie to watch.
October 30, 2013 at 7:07 am
Oh shit full length commentary! Was a bit disappointed when I saw it was a 3 min review but full length commentary this gringo crazy lol awesome month of reviews.
October 30, 2013 at 7:10 am
Parts of this movie were filmed in my town, Port Dover in Southern Ontario Canada> It was awesome having the father of Zombies in town!
October 30, 2013 at 7:22 am
Yeah… this movie was crap. I didn’t care for it one bit. It wasn’t HORRIBLE, but it wasn’t good either. It was just so mediocre, I can’t really bother myself to do anything with it other than shrug my shoulders and say “meh.”
October 30, 2013 at 7:36 am
So, there will be no remakes review?
October 30, 2013 at 7:37 am
Great Review!! I am really looking forward to tomorrow’s commentary of Night of the Living Dead!!
October 30, 2013 at 7:42 am
James seems to like every movie there is
October 30, 2013 at 8:00 am
Thanks James. Your Monster Madness reviews always liven up my October and help me get in the Halloween spirit. I look forward to the full-length commentary tomorrow. That was an awesome idea.
October 30, 2013 at 8:11 am
Howling sheet! full lenght tomorrow?!
October 30, 2013 at 8:36 am
I literally made a NotLD commentary just yesterday, I finally got it uploaded a couple minutes ago. It is such a great view. It will be awesome to see your opinion on it! I was thinking about doing a street fighter commentary because I saw you and mike do it, but you guys only do a 30 minute one, I am gonna do full-length.
October 30, 2013 at 8:40 am
Survival was the absolute worst part to me, it felt like watching the grass grow.
Nothing of Romero’s former genius was visible here, it could also have been directed by a random fan director.
And don’t get me even started about the shitty CGI…
October 30, 2013 at 8:54 am
Yes this movie was absolutely terrible. James did admit that he would not have watched the movie if the director was someone other than Romero but other than that he seemed way to easy on it. This movie was so much worse than diary of the dead. The acting in this movie is even worse than in that one, as are the effects. The movie manages to be so dull, which I find is hard to do in the zombie genre. It’s really unrecognizable as a Romero film and is by far the worst in the series.
October 30, 2013 at 10:29 am
Thank you Sir!
October 30, 2013 at 8:48 am
A full length commentary is one hell of a way to wrap up MM this year. Gotta love that public domain!
October 30, 2013 at 9:01 am
well I gotta check this one out I actually didn’t know it came out!
October 30, 2013 at 9:04 am
I had forgotten that I had seen this film, and that says a lot. I think you said it best James. It’s pretty “meh”. I found most of it entertaining, but the really horrible CG often took me out. It’s kind of ironic, because the last film was about us being desensitized, but it really doesn’t help if the graphic events depicted look fake. I know there wasn’t much of a budget, but I’d take people in cheap dollar store makeup spitting ketchup than this VFX fest.
October 30, 2013 at 9:20 am
This movie sucks! The story and the lines they give them are so stupid.
October 30, 2013 at 9:25 am
Night of the Living Dead being public domain never made me expect…oh baby!!! James, you is the man and a bag of chips.
October 30, 2013 at 10:15 am
Very cool, a full length commentary. Should be fun since I’ve never actually seen Night of the Living Dead in its entirety. I was expecting a review of The Walking Dead.
October 30, 2013 at 10:23 am
Shit nice man cant wait for the full length commentary. You said you had something special planned for Night but Didnt expect that. Awesome.
October 30, 2013 at 10:49 am
This Monster Madness was truly awesome. I wonder whats in store for next year.
October 30, 2013 at 11:58 am
For the 2000 decade, they should have made Zombie Shark Attack. That would have been the ultimate in popularity since those were the 2 most mass-produced movie genres of the time.
October 30, 2013 at 11:08 pm
whoa awesome idea
October 30, 2013 at 12:30 pm
OMG You should’ve seen the look on my face when you said you were doing the full lenght commentary!!! This is awesome James! Thnaks for all your great work and efforts!
October 30, 2013 at 12:41 pm
Ive been sick and not feeling good all this Halloween season, so I know I’ll be sick tomorrow on Halloween and unable to go anywhere or do anything…it’s been a really big bummer….until now.
Thanks James, you just saved Halloween for me man. ;___; I was dreading tomorrow, but now I can’t wait. =DDD You rock man!!!
October 30, 2013 at 12:44 pm
I had never seen this one, might need to give it view now. I had a feeling you where going to do a commentary on Night of the Living Dead, can’t wait!!!
October 30, 2013 at 1:06 pm
I never really liked Survival of the Dead, it really is too generic. But HOLY CRAP at the announcement for tomorrow!!!
October 30, 2013 at 1:14 pm
You’re awesome. What a spectacular way to end this year’s monster madness, you really went all out.
By the way, I was wondering; I really like the Nerd videos and I love that you are still making them. However, although I think they are hilarious, I don’t only like them because they are funny, I also like that they are educational, and I also like to hear your opinion on old games. I was wondering; any chance of making some low-key videos where you just talk about some famous, actually good old games, and what effect they had on you? I’d love to hear you talk about Ocarina of Time, that’s my favorite game ever.
October 30, 2013 at 1:17 pm
Holy shit, can’t wait for tomorrow
Holy crap, ANOTHER Romero film? Not much to say here huh? :p
I think I’ll have to check this out.
OMG, A FULL LENGTH COMMENTARY? *Faint*
October 30, 2013 at 1:45 pm
Uhm James you have the wrong year on this movie. It came out in 2009
October 30, 2013 at 2:55 pm
These last two films were awful!
I got each dvd in a bargain bin at Wal Mart for $2.50 each! I guess I got what I paid for!
October 30, 2013 at 3:01 pm
So excited for the full-length commentary!!!
October 30, 2013 at 3:09 pm
James could you do similar marathons for christmas and summer movies? That would be so great. I know that it’s a lot of work but I can bet that many people would love to help you with putting everything together.
October 30, 2013 at 3:16 pm
You mentioned in your review that some of the people of the island keep zombies around in case they can find a way to cure them, however the film doesn’t do anything with the idea. I’m pleased to announce that I found an interesting Tv series from BBC Drama called “In The Flesh”. In this show we get to see society come back from chaos and people start to pick up their lives. What makes this interesting is that the zombies have been rounded up into intake centers/ asylums and are treated with medication and given the title Partially Deceased Syndrome sufferers. What’s even crazier is that once these PDS people have recovered enough they are reunited with their families across England and are now reinstated back into their homes. This is a very cool idea and I only accidentally found it on the shelf at wal-mart last week. It’s not bad, check it out.
October 30, 2013 at 3:18 pm
Forgot to mention, these PDS patients are given thick makeup/ concealer and contacts to make their appearance more look as if they are still 100% alive. Genius!
October 30, 2013 at 3:37 pm
October 30, 2013 at 3:48 pm
Awesome! Can’t wait until tomorrow! 😀
I think that this movie was a battle between keeping people alive at all cost, or let them dye in dignity…Which can only lead to a bath of blood. There’s always some intention behind any Romero’ zombie flicks…I enjoy the final shoot out between the two opponents whit the moon in the back, which mean craziness…
October 30, 2013 at 4:21 pm
Just wanted to point out the the year should be 2009.
October 30, 2013 at 5:31 pm
I rank Diary/Survival differently myself. I like Diary a lot, even if James’ criticisms are right, I liked the first person account of the beginning of the apocalypse more than Survival’s weird story and characters, which I found mostly uninteresting and frustrating to watch.
October 30, 2013 at 5:32 pm
so saddened when i seen this. he was on the top baby until land. everything since was awful. im miss the old romero. dont think ill ever be seeing that again.
October 30, 2013 at 6:05 pm
Where are the clips that you use in the intro from?
October 30, 2013 at 6:22 pm
That fire death is weird
October 30, 2013 at 6:28 pm
Nice review, James. So, it’s just okay, huh? Unfortunate, but it is what it is. And yeah, I’m totally sick of zombies, too. They’ve been way over-saturated the past few years. Whoa, full length commentary?! That sounds great! I am definitely tuning in for that!
October 30, 2013 at 6:49 pm
wicked. full length commentary? I could listen to this guy talk all day.
October 30, 2013 at 7:20 pm
Your right in the review I wouldnt have even watched survival if didnt have Ramons on it, an fucking awesome man cant wait till tomorrow full length commentary nice James nice 🙂
October 30, 2013 at 7:23 pm
Hellyeah! waiting for that movie commentary 🙂
October 30, 2013 at 8:19 pm
FUUUUUUUCK, CAN’T WAIT FOR TOMORROW!
October 30, 2013 at 8:21 pm
I’m really looking forward to the full commentary tomorrow!
October 30, 2013 at 8:30 pm
I was hoping you would cover 2004 remake of Dawn Of The Dead, too bad. 🙁
October 30, 2013 at 9:39 pm
I was gonna be a loser and sit at home all night on Halloween, but now I have something to look forward to. Thanks!
October 30, 2013 at 10:04 pm
one day… im gonna make coffee on the moon!
October 30, 2013 at 10:22 pm
“…had potential but was misguided.”
I thought that misguided meant that the basis for the idea was wrong. Maybe a better expression would be “poorly executed”. I love your work, James. I can’t wait for the movie.
October 30, 2013 at 10:52 pm
How about Giallo Madness? I know its not monster related but its by far the greatest subgenre of horror films. I wanna know what u have to say about island of death and tenebre and your vice is a locked room and only I have the key and pierre paolo pasolini and the like. Or how about sequel a thon 3 with basketcase and maniac cop. actually, just do what youre doing, nevermind me, i’m just stoned.
October 30, 2013 at 11:16 pm
lol James ends the 2013 Sequel-a-thon with a non-sequel…
Yet the series most known for sequels, Friday the 13th, is skipped…
Keep up the good work though James…
October 30, 2013 at 11:50 pm
Cool! I’m curious to hear what you have to say about Night of the Living Dead in great detail; that movie has been a favorite of mine since I bought it a few years back.
October 31, 2013 at 12:13 am
Hell Yes! That’s how you end Monster Madness with a Bang!
October 31, 2013 at 1:13 am
Amazing breadth of knowledge
October 31, 2013 at 1:47 am
bad luck bootsy wiped his ass today.
October 31, 2013 at 1:55 am
Great Monster Madness this year, James. I’ve been a fan ever since the first, and I really appreciate that the average length of these videos has increased over the years. Can’t wait for that full-length commentary tomorrow.
October 31, 2013 at 2:09 am
But first, the Xidax commercial. UGH.
October 31, 2013 at 2:14 am
Full length commentary!!!! WHAT!!!!!!????? WOW!
BTW, what if a zombie bit Chucky?
October 31, 2013 at 3:14 am
aha now it makes since why all the short ass videos a whole movie commentary.
October 31, 2013 at 3:17 am
I liked this one okay, but as you said nothing groundbreaking. I wouldn’t mind seeing another sequel though featuring the military guy. Full length movie commentary on Night of the Living Dead? Fucking awesome!
October 31, 2013 at 6:34 am
James, you are the Master. THINK BIGGER MY FRIEND! Get in touch with AMC or TCM and try to get yourself a show! This isn’t kiddie business anymore man. Your talent has propelled you from movie reviewer to Movie Connoisseur. You are THE Best of the Best. Thank you SO much for not letting our generation forget the classics that made (good and bad) Modern Cinema what it is today. You deserve more, and you have the potential…just grab life by the balls and SQUEEZE!!!
October 31, 2013 at 6:36 am
why no youtube,ScrewAttack,GameTrailers,…just looking for ways to watch. On your site I can only watch on my cpu. I want to watch on my smart TV and my tablet. Why is this a problem? love your work btw.
October 31, 2013 at 4:01 pm
oh my god james! it’s my first time following monster madness on halloween day by day (for some reason), and you’ve been making me company since i work from home. i just watch this episode today, so when i heard you’re doing full commetary and i saw that the video was already up, my jaw dropped… like a zombie (hehe), anyway, you rock.
October 31, 2013 at 7:08 pm
Horror movies always were my least favorite genre. But with Monster Madness being so captivating, I’m starting to see why James likes them so much. I guess when you take the time to research something in details, you start caring a lot more about it. Thanks for the fun ride James!
October 31, 2013 at 9:30 pm
I knew you said you had something special planned but I expected a double length Monster Madness episode or something.
When you said the surprise I actually went “WHUTT?” at the top of my lungs.
October 31, 2013 at 9:32 pm
I was disappointed that you didn’t talk about the ending of Survival of the dead. Although not nearly as good as his first 4 films I loved the idea that the zombies had continued to evolve and had found an alternate food source to Humans.
November 1, 2013 at 12:48 am
Would I lose out on much if I were to go straight from Land of the Dead to Survival of the Dead? I don’t really want to see Diary of the Dead.
Also, there’s just something wrong about CGI in a Romero zombie film…
November 1, 2013 at 11:36 am
Loved the dead reviews but can’t believe you did this one and didn’t mention the fact that the zombies learn to eat horse meat and they talk about how society could coexist with zombies. The films have got progressively worse since Dawn of the Dead though.
