Alien Resurrection (1997)

    Good video, thanks…….FIRST.

    • October 23, 2013 at 4:55 am

It’s easy to get first if you don’t watch the video before you post. Unfortunately when you do that you don’t have anything interesting to say except ‘good job thx and first’, which you could say for every video. But good job getting first.

      • October 23, 2013 at 5:31 am

I find it hilarious how much people care when someone simply comments “first!” It’s a harmless internet tradition and it isn’t meant to be taken seriously…

      • October 23, 2013 at 5:53 am

Can’t we all just get along? Why do we have to ridicule someone over a lousy first post, but really, who cares? That’s what’s wrong with society these days. We hide behind the wall of the internet knowing we are protected from harm. If it were a race to the bar would you ridicule the person who got their first? The answer is most likely no, or you would compliment the person on how fast they are or something, endless possibilities. Anyways, who cares who s first this isn’t a race and have some respect for people. It irritates myself as well but it’s nothing to dwell upon.

      • October 23, 2013 at 8:07 am

OK, Maybe posting that was a jerk move, but I can’t help but find the replies somewhat ironic.

One saying I shouldn’t care enough to post about it, while at the same time caring enough to post to me about it. So, yeah, got me there.

The other saying that I wouldn’t have said it, had I been in person because the wall of the internet is protecting me from harm.

1.Who is wanting to harm me for my comment?

2.Is that how it should work? Keep your mouth shut because someone might harm you?

Your actually arguing the merits of a system that makes use of harming people you don’t agree with?

If anything is wrong with society these days it would be that sentiment right there, that you should be afraid of saying things because someone will turn to violence. And you seem to think that’s a good idea.

Then you want to talk about having respect for people and asking if we can get along. Well… no we can’t get along if your going to say people should be threatened or hurt for their comments, saying that they are lucky the internet is protecting them. I consider that a threat. So what would you do to me for my comment without the internet protecting me? Attack me?

And if I’m offended by that comment? What now? Should you be lucky the internet is protecting you from me because of your comment? No, of course not, because no one should ever be harmed for a comment, even one as tragically stupid as yours. But its nothing to dwell on (as I finish the super long post).

Bottom line, I still think its dumb to post first for the sake of being first. But if I was a jerk about it, then I am sorry.

      • October 23, 2013 at 8:44 am

Jesus mate. I live in Australia,so I don’t have to wake up at 4am to watch it, and was excited to see the new movie up and no one had watched it. So what if I said first, it’s not going to cause a fucking apocalypse, I just felt like having a laugh and keeping tradition. I think all James’ movies are equally brilliant. There, did I say enough for you.

      • October 23, 2013 at 10:33 am

I believe I already apologized to you. You’re right, your comment didn’t cause the apocalypse. Never said that it did. For the record, my comment didn’t cause the end of days either & could have been taken with a grain of salt just as it was suggested that I do with your comment. Neither one of us has done that and I admit that it was a failing on my part.

What it did was annoy me that for the millionth time some guy felt like he needed everyone to know he was first to watch. It’s just a waste of a comment and just slightly annoying enough for me (after seeing it countless times) to want to say something.

But what really surprised me was some of the responses from others. compared to those and my comment that prompted them, it turns out your comment was the least problematic of all. Especially since my comment has started a war of words. So again, my bad.

        October 23, 2013 at 11:52 am

DDMIKE… just shut the fuk up!! You have posted soooo many times on here with your dikbreath comments that even JAMES wants to punch you in the balls… or his own. Oh by the way, FIRST… to shit on ALL your comments!! LOL

@Infinite-Ends It’s a really shitty, stupid “tradition” that needs to die a quick death.

@Tenhighjedi How about you learn to spell and also to stop being an asshole yourself before you start criticizing other people’s comments. Your comment here is almost as useless as that “first” post.

@4DMike You weren’t being a jerk at all. You were being spot on, and I completely agree with you. The people talking trash to you are just idiot trolls who think making “first” posts are a good idea and get pissed when others such as you call them out for their stupid bullshit.

Not true it’s a movie video you could write a paragraph on one statement.

      • October 24, 2013 at 3:27 am

4DMIKE. Sorry mate, I didn’t see your comment below. Let’s stop the bickering and just enjoy the movies. Next time I write a comment will be sure to leave something more relevant. But having a laugh doesn’t hurt anyone if you don’t take it seriously.

its totally crazy how upset people get over saying first. its really just people being jealous that they didnt get to say it. you know that they would have said ‘first’ too! they were just too late so they bitch and moan at the person who got it pretending that they think its annoying… what theyre really saying is “god dammit i wanted to say first!!”

Given how annoying first posts are for a whole lot of people (not just here, but everywhere on the Internet), continuing to post them in this day and age is just straight up trolling at this point and should be treated as such. I really wish that James or Mike would simply start automatically banning people who make useless “first” posts like that. That would certainly put a quick end to the problem.

      • Bludman2

        October 23, 2013 at 7:43 pm

Banning might be going a bit far but if they just mentioned in a video how much they hated it and thought it was stupid then I’m sure that would fix the problem too.

      • juggalo747

        October 24, 2013 at 12:20 am

How about a “You Know What’s Bullshit” about it? Also, they wouldn’t have to ban the person. They could just delete the comment and it’s wake and it will be like it never happened.

    • October 23, 2013 at 4:59 pm

To the people who read comment sections: I’m sorry for starting all this. Kinda wish I never said anything at this point, but like a can of worms or pandoras box, once opened and let out, things can never be the same. It was never this big of a deal to me and never expected so much internet fury over it, but it is what it is. Sorry to james and mike if they by chance see this mess. And sorry to the innocent people who just wanted to watch a review & got this instead.

      • culwin

        October 23, 2013 at 7:35 pm

This wall of stupid arguments is so much better than someone typing “first”.

    • October 23, 2013 at 11:36 pm

People who endlessly bitch about “First” posts being annoying are what make “First” posts annoying!

      • October 24, 2013 at 10:12 pm

And people who endlessly bitch about people bitching about “First” posts being annoying are what make people bitching about “First” posts annoying! And so on.

But seriously this “First” shit is ridiculously annoying. You are obviously first if your post is first, why post JUST to point out that the first post is indeed the first post? It’s like standing next to the cabbages in a supermarket all day and telling every single passerby that these are cabbages. No, worse, it’s like getting to the supermarket as soon as it opens then spending all day telling everyone else that comes in that you’ve been here all day. I can only imagine that all these people grow up to be mad hobos who spend all day swearing at pigeons in the park and asking strangers for powdered milk.

      • October 24, 2013 at 10:32 pm

The thing is the initial “First” post is silly and pointless, but it’s also a tiny single-syllable word that’s very easy to ignore.

The true curse of the “First” post is the ever-present multi-page argument someone always starts about it.

Luke Carroll:”And people who endlessly bitch about people bitching about “First” posts being annoying are what make people bitching about “First” posts annoying! And so on.”

        Pretty much. Yeah, actually.

  • October 23, 2013 at 4:47 am

I thought he might play hide the soul with ripley for a sec. And of course a chuckie commercial has to play right after the video lol.

  • Fatemah

    October 23, 2013 at 4:49 am

This movie was quite….um… well it was something. And they did say they got her DNA from old samples on the prison planet. How they lasted 200 years is anyone’s guess. Still prefer Alien 3 although this one is entertaining.

    • Dennis

      October 23, 2013 at 4:54 am

When Ripley dies in Alien 3 all the scientists are around. No deal for them to get her out of the fire and save her genetic code. Then they had 200 years to develop a technic to clone her – Cloning is possible nowadays so in a science-fiction movie it should be easy to perform!

      • Fatemah

        October 23, 2013 at 5:00 am

No, she melted in the molten lead. The movie did say they got the blood from samples taken.
        …Plus it’s a movie so yeah.

      • October 23, 2013 at 5:01 am

But how do you get a clone of an alien from human DNA? You have to have alien DNA, and if you have that then you don’t need to clone ripley, you just clone the alien. Of course it doesn’t have to make sense because its just a plot device to get ripley and aliens back in the franchise and give her some new abilities to boot.

      • Dennis

        October 23, 2013 at 5:03 am

even when her DNA got collected later: Think of the movie Jurassic Park – the reason why they could create Dinosaurs were insects that got fossilized in amber which is impossible but it’s still an epic movie!

      • Dennis

        October 23, 2013 at 5:08 am

good point 4DMIKE. Anyway James explained that the Aliens type depended on their host (?). So maybe the host’s DNA changed too at the point where they got infected. Last option for logic here 😀

      • LordOctron

        October 23, 2013 at 6:28 am

The alien DNA is in Ripleys DNA as facehuggers manipulate the hosts DNA to grow the alien in the body, like cancer, thats whhy the alien resembles the host (human, dog, predator…) Also, Ripley bleed in the movie, she got injections and she was hospitalized etc., they could have gotten the blood sample from a lot places.

      • October 23, 2013 at 10:50 am

If the alien DNA is in ripley’s DNA, then extract the alien DNA and leave out the rest, no need to clone a ripley with it.

Even if the host’s DNA is changed by the alien to make the body ready for the alien, then cloning that DNA would result in a clone that is ready for an alien to live in but wouldn’t give you the information needed to grow an actual alien. You have to have alien DNA to get an alien. Modified human DNA will clone you a modified human. There is just no way to grow an alien without alien DNA. And if you have that DNA you don’t need to grow a human around it. Like I said, the only reasonable explanation is that this is a plot device to have both ripley and aliens return to life for another go round. It’s so unsatisfying to not have an “in-story” explanation that holds water, but that’s how it goes sometimes.

      • October 23, 2013 at 6:32 pm

she was the 8th one in the movie; so they do leave it open to how long it actually took for them to get the number 8, which easly explains the 200 years

      • LordOctron

        October 25, 2013 at 3:55 am

The facehugger doesn’t make the host body ready, it makes the host body grow the alien like a organ. Like… The human DNA contains info to grow a liver, right? You could alter it to grow a second liver, or another kidney. And if you clone this human with the altered DNA, and let it grow, the clone would have a 2nd liver or 3rd kidney as well, and you could extract it. But separating the liver or kidney bit letting it grow on itself (without the human) is much harder, you had to figure out all the dependencies in the DNA. If you could do this, you could probably construct/engineer the alien live form from the scratch without needing a clone or DNA…

  • Dennis

    October 23, 2013 at 4:50 am

Hey James! It IS more then u think. It discussed cloning at a time where it was important to think about its consequences, it shows the dark side of humanity, it is cynical, not only stupid funny, it shows humanity a mirror and we can face our evil inside. And the android is not just an android but an android made by androids and therefore more human than all humans in this movie! Thinking about all the things i mentioned it is really more than a comedie. For me it’ll forever be a piece of art!

    • ZomboCombo

      October 24, 2013 at 8:50 am

How is that “more human”? I never got that. More humane, perhaps. But “human” or human nature is anything humans actually do, not some ideal.

I think Alien resurrection is a Okay movie until they go underwater water, after that, it’s a disaster

I thought that after seeing that movie alien 3 was not so bad after all

  • October 23, 2013 at 4:57 am

Can you do Alien vs. predator please?

    • Dennis

      October 23, 2013 at 5:21 am

Wow, I kinda forgot about this film. I was about 16 when I saw this movie in theaters. I do remember liking it at the time, though. I did have some nitpicks about it, but what film can’t one nitpick, right?

Out of curiosity, though, why did you skip Alien 3? For some reason, I can’t remember that film at all. The first two, I definitely remember as I’ve seen them often enough, but the third film is a complete blank.

  • October 23, 2013 at 5:00 am

Agradezco este video. No he visto la película.

      October 23, 2013 at 11:05 am

  • October 23, 2013 at 5:26 am

So Alien vs Predator is next? I saw this one quite some time ago and the only scene the remains stuck in my mind is when the Human/Alien hybrid gets sucked out the window.

  • tweight

    October 23, 2013 at 5:33 am

James, I like you, but this I gotta disagree. The movie may be okay and over-the-top on its own, but not as a sequel to the Alien franchise. It’s horrible. I don’t know if it’s the script or the director, but some plot elements are so absurd and inconsistent. To emphasize on how stupid it can get, you take a sad scene in which Ripley finds her clones, one sais “kill me” because she suffers and what Ripley does is burn her alive. Because “remember that awesome scene in Alien with the flame thrower? We should totallycopy that.” Is Ripley retarded in this movie? Brad Dourif I can understand, he’s nuts. Even in this movie, Weaver proved she’s a great actress. Supposedly, producers begged her to play in it. In my humble opinion, the human xenomorph is what actually buried the movie franchise.

Fun fact: that basketball scene was actually real, she threw it backwards like that and it went down the hoop in one try. There’s a video on youtube somewhere of the cast freaking out at it during filming.

  • October 23, 2013 at 5:53 am

Watched this movie for Alien, stayed for Ron Perlman, Brad Dourif and Winona Ryder.

You know James, Stan Winston School of Character Arts has an article ( on ALIEN RESURRECTION which points towards Studio ADI’s YouTube Channel. That is the name of the special effects studio that Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff, Jr. formed after leaving Stan Winston’s studio, and it is the name they used while working on RESURRECTION. Their channel have an overabundance of awesome behind the scenes videos, some of which can be found here I hope you’d like the videos James 🙂

  • LordOctron

    October 23, 2013 at 6:22 am

The clone contains the alien because facehuggers manipulate the hosts DNA to grow the alien sorta like a tumor, that’s also the reason why alien shares aspect of the host. As the blood sample was probably taken after Ripleys DNA was already manipulated (end of alien 3) it would also grow in the clone. Also see my comment on Alien3…

I know i’m in the minority, but i’ve always liked WATERWORLD. It’s notorious for being (at one point) the most expensive movie produced, but that was because they lost their sets in a typhoon and had to rebuild them.

At any rate, i also saw AR on opening day, James! It was awful then, and it’s awful now. Yick. What were they thinking?

The original Alien film is my favorite of all time, but Alien Resurrection – a movie so bad even Harry Knowles hated it? Yeah, that’s how shitty it is. It’s just so damned… eurotrash. Everything about it grates my nipples. Ripley’s stupid lines, her idiotic character, worst fucking casting ever Winona Ryder as the android, aliens that talk to each other and go “RAWR!”, the crap score, the crap Poseiden Adventure rip-off story, even Ron Perlman gets on my nerves, just… everything! Are we really supposed to give a crap about mercenary slave traders who are sending innocent people to an awful doom? Fuck them; the murdering scum! Oh, and at the end when they slam the massive ship into the Earth and create an explosion that would make the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs look like a firecracker. Gee, thanks a bunch Ripley and Co. for saving us from the aliens by blowing the planet up! Couldn’t have steered that ship into the moon or sun, huh? Yeah, fuck you too! Cannot sit through that unwatchable garbage. Fuck you, Jeunet, you hack French fuck!!! You ruined the Alien franchise you sorry citizen of a surrendering shithole!!! Whoops, sorry about that. I went all Mel Gibsonish rage there for a second. We now return you to your regular forum.

      October 23, 2013 at 8:32 am

Can’t believe that so many people hate this movie… but your arguments are just unreasonable and primitive – that might be the reason why you didn’t understand anything inside AR. Does really noone here see the paralels from AR to our society? I take for example Ron Pearlmans role and when he kills the spider. James showed that clip and laughed about it in his review. Well, why are we laughing there? It is not just the stand alone scene but for me it’s the character of Johner. Hes tough, rough, wants to be hard and dangerous and interacts in an agressive way with all the people. He still has a heart of gold inside which is shown by his relation to Vriess and his opinions. But in total he seems to be a little low-minded. When he sees the spider he shoots it cause its his way to work with his inner fear. Even when he’s afraid he reacts agressively. Like a lot of people do that can’t understand things and are afraid of them YUST BECAUSE OF THAT FACT. So plz guys. See what the movie wants us to show!

Gotta love that fake movie science – you can clone, from your dna, a parasite that attached to your body after you were born…

    October 23, 2013 at 6:49 am

    i agree with everything:P
    its not good.
and it does not make sense and stuff.
but it is better than part 3.

and ron pearlman is always awesome.

oow and the basketball hoop thing.
    she actualy succeeds it .
its not when the ball go’s out of the camera shot that someone else drops the ball in their or something.
no it is a real trow.
and the actors had to keep a straight face.
at least thats what it says in the special features.

As, myself, a citizen of this “surrendering shithole” i want to thank you for comfort me in my idea that it is not such a bad thing, being french, when i saw people like you elsewhere.

About the movie, i kinda like it. Not twice as much as alien and aliens, but it has its moments.

Anyway, as always, thanks for the review and keep up the good work james.

I really remember this sequel best from the series … sure it is more action-based and goofy than “Alien” but I like the cast (S. Weaver, Brad Dourif, Wynona Rider and that ape-looking guy, whose name I don`t know) and the whole story of the movie. There`s so much going on story-wise and the whole Sigourney Weaver as the mother of the alien-plot and the way her “child” dies is just awesome …

Sometimes it`s useful not to compare sequels to the other parts of the series and enjoy the movie for what it is … like with the Cube-or the Matrix-series …
Well, you do a sequelathon, so not comparing the movie to the other parts would be lacking something …

No mention of the director 🙁 He’s my favorite director, too. You can always tell a Jeunet movie, he has such a unique style. ‘City of Lost Children’ is amazing! This was his only American movie and some say his worse. Everything else is in French. He just doesn’t make bad movies, though. I loved this an itch to watch it over the originals, actually.

I hope James reviews the Predator films next. I’d especially be interested in his view of the River Ghost alien in the newest Predator movie Predator(s). I think that the River Ghost in this is like the space Jockey in the first Alien in that it creates an atmosphere of intrigue, similar to that created by the space jockey as both creatures are introduced in their respective films but not fully explained. I for one would be ineterested in finding out more about the River Ghosts in future Predator films!

I think Alien 4 was as bad as it was because Sygourney Weaver was given more creative licence with her character and in the commentary on the dvds it states she had alot of the ‘ideas’ that made the film what it is. I think sometimes actors should just focus on acting and not start thinking they can direct or better the script they are given. Did you know that Sygourney Weaver originally pushed for a scene where Ripley and the Alien had sex in the original Alien? Yes its true, its in the commentary on the directors cut dvd, imagine how awful the first Alien would have been if Sygourney Weaver had been listed to. Also we would have had an Alien 5 set on earth by now, which would have been a direct sequel to 4 but Sygourney Weaver felt that having the aliens reach earth wasnt good and wanted to have the 5th film revisit the same planet from 1 and 2. No suprise this film never got made! If they do ever make another Alien film dont give Sygourney any creative control what so ever!

I am pleased that James Rolfe also likes this movie. I’ve defended this movie from dorks for years. Has anybody mentioned that it is a Jean Pierre Jeunet (sp?) movie? Thats probably its greatest attribute. He is one of the best filmakers alive! Kids, go out and rent / download / steal from Best Buy the movies Delicatessin and City of the Lost Children.

    Ps: first.

I actually like this movie except for one thing…the Newborn ugh…one of the worst monsters in monster movie history. Seriously who thought this thing was a good monster idea? Well its still better than Prometheus which I consider my second worst movie ever

Oh boy, I remember this movie. Never found it scary myself but the clone scene was disturbing for me as well. Hell even the new hybrid battle scene was weird to me. Like you said James, it one of those movies you like but only watch once.

    October 23, 2013 at 10:46 am

I remember this movie when it came out as well. I feel like I snuck in to watch it in theaters since I was younger than 17 at the time, but I can’t remember. Brad Dourif is an incredible horror actor and I think we need a video on all that he has done, beyond Child’s Play which I enjoy thoroughly. Everytime I see him in a movie I get the chills, or even when has a guest spot on something like Criminal Minds. Truly a modern day Horror Icon.

  • October 23, 2013 at 10:46 am

Hi James, your sequel-a-thon got me convinced to register on your site and I’m glad you reviewed one of my other favorite franchises, (you already did my most favorite with Godzilla-thon and i love the AVGN of course)

I’m glad that you didn’t just rip this movie apart as I found it entertaining as you did, but I can get why a lot of people hate it. Watching the Alien franchise you see a lot of their directors in them, Ridley Scott’s keen visual sense, James Cameron’s hardware packed sense, David fincher’s bleak sepia style, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s eccentricity. You may have a point as I fondly remember laughing at a good deal of resurrection, especially the death of the newborn despite how grotesque it is it’s got a rather comedic effect for some reason, especially the brief seconds in space showing its remains with the end music note holding out which made it all the more hilarious for some reason.

I’m surprised you didn’t point out this was the first if the series to use cg aliens but then again the images speak for themselves and proves the aliens look better when on camera.

I love each of the films in their own ways and can’t wait to see what you’ll tackle next. Thank you.

First movie video I watch from you. And no offense, but I wasn’t convinced. I’m not trying to be some elitist movie-maniac douchebag, but it didn’t seem like you did any research about the movie.

When you make an AVGN video, you talk about the makers, the “historical context”. Here it’s like “this isn’t like past Aliens, it’s trash, it sucks but it’s fun lol”. Five minute plus the intro, kthxbye.

No word about Jean-Pierre Jeunet and his past work, a brief -and useless – mention of Joss Whedon. The movie was made back when everyone was freaking out about cloning and the ethical problems behind it, but heh, I guess it wasn’t important either.

And if it differs from past Aliens, it’s because (or I’d personally say, thank to) Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who “imported” part of his universe (and favorite actors), as well as to Whedon’s mood. And then again, even Aliens (II), had its funny/amusing moments.

I’m not even a fan of Alien Resurrection. I actually don’t care about this movie at all. I don’t like Whedon’s work except for Firefly and think Jeunet stoped making good movies ten years ago. But this video was, IMO, disappointing. I’ll stick to AVGN.

I am a HUGE Aliens fan and if you like the movie that’s fine, but me, I just don’t like this movie (I don’t hate it though). It’s entertaining I’ll give you that, but I didn’t like the idea of the queen and Ripley being spliced together. I though it was dead on arrival. I did remember some characters, though, and there were some cool action scenes. It just didn’t do anything for me. I will defend Alien 3 as a pretty decent movie (and being better than Resurrection) to my dying day, though. But I’ve talked about Alien 3 already. Go check out the Nostalgic Critic’s review of Alien: Resurrection; it’s pretty funny.
    Great review, James!

Well spoken, it’s an under rated flick just for it’s entertainment value. It’s not trying to be scary anymore since we already know what the aliens are and what they do. We get the point 3 movies deep into the series. The movie just tries to continue to develop a side story that is quite thrilling and enjoyable to watch. It has it’s creepy moments through out but not anything like the other 3 movies. A solid finale to a series which can be said for few other 4+ movie series’.

Man, I need to rewatch these movies. Don’t think I’ve ever seen any of them in there entirety and I never saw any of the last two. Ironically, and shamefully, only the Aliens vs Predators movies ever got my full beginning to end attention. Hopefully those, and maybe even Predator, get a little love. I know there’s only eight days of October left though. It’ll be interesting to see what’s left on the table for Monster Madness.

  • RectalTerror

    October 23, 2013 at 4:44 pm

I will only stress on what has already been pointed out: you can’t say anything about this movie without mentioning his director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The guy has his own style/tone, and it’s written all over this movie too, from the image, colors, humor to the choice of actors.

While I’m not expecting an american to know much of JP Jeunet, I’d have expected James to have seen “Amelie” as it was named in the US?

I also think it’s a good way to continue a franchise btw, to change the style & surprise. The proper way to take a good dump on a franchise is to make an Aliens vs Predator, THAT is shit. Thinking of it, if AVP had been done by Jeunet, it could have been watchable.

My biggest complain when it comes to sequels like those is that the freaking fans ask for sequels.Us most of the times is our fault that they continue to release more and more of the same stuff, and in the end we complain about the movie that it sucked. For me alien resurrection was not so bad, worst from the two first together but it had its times and this is it.They soul’d stop in the first two films i always say because after a while it becomes tyresome i believe, and stop listen to our requests once in a while.

The Resident Evil films have been getting worse with each one and keep contradicting the previous films established lore. Alien Resurrection is on the same level as Terminator 2 for me. I watched it when it came out and watch it every now and then but while a good product there is no long lasting appeal once the flash wears off and aside from watching it now and then when memory starts to fade there is no pull to watch it for pure entertainment. It just doesn’t deliver on that level.

  • October 23, 2013 at 9:01 pm

I actually hated the end of this movie for one reason, and one reason alone. To me, the final alien is like a little kid just going by instinct and trying to please it’s mother(Ripley) but she betrays it out of prejudice, and then, they take it one step further into the dark side. I SWEAR THE THING PLEADINGLY SCREAMS ‘mama” as it’s being sucked out the window

    • spvtryan

      October 24, 2013 at 1:01 am

Haha it actually does say “Mama”.. It was put in there intentionally for that reason alone.

    That baby alien looks amazing

  • October 23, 2013 at 10:01 pm

I know the fly effect. But I liked most Ripley from first movie. She was scared and not aware about her survival instinct. And it was logical that she was more serious about enemy she knew in second and it’s even logical that she is sure about her enemy in third but this fourth is trash. Like you said. It’s still entertaining movie. And better than Prometheus.

Just have to point out that Joss Whedon did not write the final script for Waterworld. He acted sort of as a script doctor at the time for a number of projects (Speed, The Getaway remake, even X-Men in 2000)

I really hated this movie. Once I saw Ron Perlman in it, I knew it was going to suck. Ron Perlman is only ever in a good movie if it’s directed by Guillermo del Toro. Everything else, from Quest for Fire to Police Academy: Mission to Moscow, completely sucked.

You know, I didn’t even know it was written by Joss Whedon (had barely heard of the guy when I last watched this), and it’s fun now to see the compare this mercenary crew to that “other” mercenary crew he wrote about, which I also wasn’t familiar with until very recently.

For me alien resurrection was just made to take a new breath of the franchise but it failed even if it had it’s own gender and story … I didn’t like it then and I didn’t like it now maybe I just need to view it again but for me they should had stop at Aliens (alien2)

  • October 24, 2013 at 4:49 am

Hey me again. Great review again!

For those wondering how they acquired the DNA of Ripley, I actually read the book before I saw the movie (loved the book btw over the movie). They acquired her DNA via fecal matter from Fury 161. You’re welcome.

  • Smokingspoon

    October 24, 2013 at 5:32 am

Heh, I like resurrection. Jeunet did a wonderful job with it, I’m still surprised that they picked him. I also noticed how each movie was different:

    Alien: Horror
    Aliens: Action
3 : Boring with some good stuff
    4: Comedy

The one thing I remember that annoyed me in resurrection was those dinosaur sounds the alien made. Those elephant noise from aliens were much more original.

    October 24, 2013 at 2:20 pm

Nice review. It’s really hard to find people that enjoy this movie, but I think you give very few credit to the director Jean Pierre Jeunet. You do praise the cinematography but you never mention the fact that it really is a main feature of his style.

    Anyway, keep ’em coming!

  • Ben_from_G-town

    October 24, 2013 at 3:31 pm

I suppose, if you go by that criteria, Alien Resurrection isn’t that bad. It’s entertaining trash, as you said, but for me, it sure doesn’t measure up to the rest. It’s cool to see the Queen again, and mamny aliens, plus a lot of action, but, ehhh. And personally I found the alien-human hybrid thing creepy as fuck. The failed Ripley clones were also pretty messed up. Great deaths though, yeah.

  • October 24, 2013 at 10:15 pm

I actually watched this movie the other day. I’m really not a fan of Joss Whedon’s writing and this movie is a a huge shit-stained example of why. All the awkwardly forced “bad-assery” and clunky “witty” dialogue is just dreadful. That, combined with terrible ideas like resurrecting Ripley and having a weird alien-human hybrid, make this whole film feel like I dropped acid while reading a bad Alien fanfiction. The only redeeming thing is Winona Ryder’s android, and that’s just because she’s cute, not because it adds anything.

It says a lot that, apart from Winona’s android, the main thing I remember about this movie is my science nerd friend telling me at the end that “Technically, the alien wasn’t SUCKED out into space, it was BLOWN out into space”. Oh. I also like how the aliens swam underwater.

  • Paul

    October 24, 2013 at 10:37 pm

Proud to be french when i hear you saying good things on this movie.
If i can give you an advice, watch Delicatessen or The City of Lost Children from Pierre Jeunet, you’ll be pretty surprised. This guy is awesome !
But i’ve to admit that Alien Resurrect is inferior than Alien or Aliens…not bad, not awesome, just …good.

  • October 30, 2013 at 7:05 pm

This was my first Alien movie, and when I see it, I still enjoy it. However, I’m in no particular hurry or have any particular desire to own it. Then I saw Aliens, which is a stark contrast both in the story, the production value and the direction. As much fun as this one was, Aliens is obviously the superior film, but there is a camp value to Resurrection…

Not the only one who would have LOVED to have seen the Joss Whedon version of Alien: Resurrection. In the original screenplay, the xenomorph’s comes to Ripley’s Earth: it was supposed to feature the marines fighting the Aliens and everything else. Due to budget restraints, it didn’t happen. He (Joss) went on record to say that the alien that looks like Ripley was added into the script without his knowledge. He only Ok’d the cloning, not everything else. One can only imagine what Joss Whedon’s Alien movie would have looked like. Sad.
