Mike PLEASE READ
u need to know that. 😀
Some Filmmakers of E.T want to “catch” the New Mexico hidden games of E.T for Atari. My english is very bad so maybe google translate is enought. CLICK -> http://bit.ly/11gLIfB
May 30, 2013 at 7:31 pm
Oh, nice! New intro!
Glad you noticed the new intro. We had a great animator put that together for us. I just had to get Pac-man in there! Chomp! Chomp!
May 31, 2013 at 2:18 am
yeah that’s cool man
May 30, 2013 at 7:47 pm
This was my first console. I remember it, but barely, I was probably 3 or 4 (’81 -’82). I quickly forgot about it when we got a Commodore 64.
Great video. Cool song at the beginning, too: Sanxion by Rob Hubbard.
May 30, 2013 at 8:16 pm
K.C.’s Crazy Chase! is much better with The Voice. You can also program your own levels. Bowling!, Basketball!, Football!, and Type & Tell! are also cool. You should do a J&M Play / Board James Crossover with Conquest of the World!.
May 30, 2013 at 8:30 pm
how about the intellivision next for the play series? If you do make sure you play the dungeons and dragons game for it….used to love that as a kid
May 31, 2013 at 1:51 am
Hey, that’s a good idea. Maybe someday.
June 1, 2013 at 7:41 pm
I have an Odyssey 2 console operational too!
I love all the games u showed on this video, they made my childhood just as many atari games, and i must disagree in fact the O2 is far superior then atari 2600.
Btw, in Brazil, Pete, was called Didi, a famous actor and comediant from the 80s… intersting discover that Pete is his real name ehhe GJ guys as aways.
May 30, 2013 at 8:46 pm
Great job guys! awesome vid!
May 30, 2013 at 9:07 pm
Didn’t Namco sue Magnavox over K.C. Munchkin? I thought I saw a Pac-Man documentary talk about that in the early days of the G4 channel.
May 30, 2013 at 9:09 pm
Never mind. It was Atari that sued.
May 30, 2013 at 9:21 pm
What a coincidence. This was my first video game console. It wasn’t the first video game I ever played; that honor goes to Space Invaders. But this was the first console I ever had, prior to the Atari 2600.
May 30, 2013 at 9:41 pm
I remember my first video game. Super Mario World on the SNES.
May 31, 2013 at 12:42 am
You must be around 26 years old 🙂
May 30, 2013 at 10:00 pm
Hey, Mike and James. Just watched the new video, and was pleased to see this series continue. Also know that what both of you do is EXTREMELY appreciated. When I’m having a bad one (which has been often lately) this site has become my go to. So thanks for that. Cinemassacre rules. Cheers.
May 31, 2013 at 1:48 am
Thanks. We both really enjoy this series because it gives us a chance to play some games. And we get to make videos about stuff that’s usually not suited for an AVGN episode.
May 31, 2013 at 2:13 am
You guys should do a follow up video on how Atari ripped off many of the Odyssey II games, I mean KC Munchkin was Pac Man before Pac Man ever existed
May 30, 2013 at 10:33 pm
James, Mike, keep doing these videos. These are much more than filler while waiting for an AVGN episodes to me, I genuinely enjoy these. Keep it up!
May 30, 2013 at 11:13 pm
We have a great exhibition about Video Games at the museum where I work and we have a Odyssey 2 wth a game called Showdown in 2100 A.D. It’s a Cowboy Duel game and it’s just awesome !!! You should try to find it!
May 30, 2013 at 11:27 pm
Just wanted to say I am really loving and enjoying these videos,
can even be longer ! like your Super C play through,
Appreciate anything you put up 🙂
May 30, 2013 at 11:29 pm
Have you ever played Star Wars Episode 1 Racer?
Also, what do you think of The Animaniacs?
May 31, 2013 at 2:12 am
When you were playing quest for the ring did you use the gameboard and tokens that come with the game?
I have an Odyssey II with the Voice Module and about 97% of all the games that came out for it, still to this day that console is my treasured jewel
You can play Round 42 in Google Chrome on this site:
I’ve tried running it through DosBox myself, but its weird resolution squished the video to the top half of the screen.
May 31, 2013 at 3:09 am
Now you can’t have a console on your lap, you cannot stand up.
I tried to even lift (do i even lift?) the PS3 a friend has…it’s the old model….must be ‘Murica.
I cannot even imagine the Xbox One, that turd of a VCR, how much will weight.
Anyway, some games on this Odyssey II were really cool, i know the console but i never saw, before, games. Almost wish i have one right now. 🙂
May 31, 2013 at 3:59 am
Amazing gems you guys manage to get your hands on!
On another note: hey Mike, I’ve seen footage recently of Luigi’s Mansion in one of your recent videos. Any chance of you reviewing that soon? I wanna hear your fist impressions of all those weird sounding ghosts! Also, that game has one of my favorite soundtracks! Love to hear what you think about that also.
May 31, 2013 at 4:39 am
Another great video. Can you do an AVGN episode on Beat Wars for the 64? So much potential…
May 31, 2013 at 4:51 am
The Odyssey 2 was my family’s first console too. Some of my fondest memories:
1) Asking for and receiving the cartridge “Assembly Language Programming.” I never could get any kind of workable program running, but it did prime me for my later career as a computer geek.
2) Designing a K.C. Munchkin maze that could be played indefinitely. All you need to do is create a wall that runs around the outer edge of the board, plus a corridor that drops down to the player’s starting position above the monster pen. The dots (which move around randomly) always start in the corners, and the ghosts always start below the pen, so there’s no way to lose. I did that shit for at least an hour, racking up an incredibly high score.
3) I wondered what would happen in “Alien Invaders Plus” if you didn’t shoot the aliens for a long time, like would they descend all the way to the ground like they did in “Space Invaders.” So one day I started a game, then sneakily turned the TV off before leaving for school. When I got back home I raced downstairs to see if anything interesting had happened, but no, they’d just descended to a low level and stayed there. Disappointing, but I was proud that I’d managed to conduct a covert experiment under my parents’ radar.
May 31, 2013 at 5:00 am
I had this thing too, but it was called the Philips Videopac here in the Netherlands. Nice video! 🙂
May 31, 2013 at 5:11 am
It’s really nice to have a weekly JMP for the next couple months. After working 18 hours, these videos help me unwind.
I never would’ve thought the Odyssey II had decent games after what I saw from the Odyssey I. And someone needs to get started on that Batman Star Wars screenplay. http://imgur.com/mOgwj71
May 31, 2013 at 5:38 am
America, Fuck Yeah!
May 31, 2013 at 6:42 am
Haha, that was a cool video. The Odyssey2 doesn’t seem like a system I could really get behind…especially since the Atari 2600 and Intellivision and Colecovision were out around the same time frame and they were vastly better systems with much better games. Anyways, you should do a whole bunch of these videos to whet our appetites as we wait for more AVGN episodes and (most importantly) the AVGN movie!
Keep up the great work guys!
May 31, 2013 at 7:51 am
Great video but it should’ve been longer, I love info on ancient consoles and it’s actually not very easy so find
May 31, 2013 at 10:04 am
No one seems to have mentioned this, but congrats on the incoming player 3 😉
May 31, 2013 at 11:44 am
you forgot about the voice module, I went an dug out my Odyssey II from the old camper out back months ago, upon taking it apart and cleaning it up I discovered it was made the exact day I was born.
May 31, 2013 at 12:21 pm
I love these “lets play” videos. Keep em coming!
May 31, 2013 at 12:52 pm
May 31, 2013 at 1:20 pm
Hey James and Mike! Been looking at and enjoying your videos for a while now, but I only just registered because now I finally got something to say.
I was hoping one of you’d do something about the Odyssey 2 some time, and my wishes were finally granted it seems.
The Odyssey 2 was also the first console I ever played one, just like you James! It’s called the ‘Philips G7000’ here in the Netherlands however, but it’s the same thing. I’m a little younger than you are, the console was my mother’s so I played it in the early nineties. Still have it and most of it’s games to this day.
Glad to see both of you guys enjoyed it, I agree, it’s an awesome system. My favorite game was ‘Gunfighter’, it’s a nice multiplayer game. It’s game #14, if American versions are similarly numbered at least. I also liked the Basketball game, which I think is #6, and the racing game you guys played! You two should try Gunfighter, if you have it. I dare to say it’s better than Combat.
Lastly, about the Quest for the Rings game, that’s actually a pretty good and elaborate RPG game. I have it complete and boxed myself, it comes with a map, a board and pawns like a board game, coins and a big manual explaining everything.
Great video guys!
May 31, 2013 at 1:49 pm
You two should play some modern games. I’d love to hear what James thinks of games like Super Mario Galaxy and Skyward Sword.
May 31, 2013 at 2:06 pm
Star Wars: Rise of the Dark Knight.
May 31, 2013 at 2:25 pm
not sure if anyone already posted a link to this but here is round 42 (online version so no download needed)
have fun james
May 31, 2013 at 3:09 pm
Mike looks just like John Leguizamo.
May 31, 2013 at 3:45 pm
Loved it, you guys always make fun videos to watch. Nice intro too. I would love to see a video of you guys playing the Neo-Geo AES or CD.
May 31, 2013 at 5:03 pm
I forgot to add I would love to see you guys try to do a few more games or videos with the commodore 64, its a classic 🙂
May 31, 2013 at 6:21 pm
I actually have Robotron 2084 for my Atari 7800, but I have yet to play it because I’m too intimidated by the controls to really want to play it yet.
May 31, 2013 at 8:41 pm
Found out that there isn’t too much that know about this system aronud here until I got luckly to find one with The voice, games, and the system box in the city wide cleanup here few weeks ago. Weird luck?
May 31, 2013 at 11:20 pm
A little unfortunate you glossed over KC Munchin. It was perhaps the most notable game of the system because the developer was forced to pull it off of shelves after a lawsuit for being too much like pac-man. Luckily it didn’t pave the way for this kind of thing to occur too often, as KC Munching is probably different enough from pac-man by todays standards to have also been released. This game was far better than Atai’s pac-man on the 2600 and the inability to release this would be killer app very likely led to the downfall of the Odyssey 2.
May 31, 2013 at 11:49 pm
Hello Jame and Mike i would like to ask you a question? It about the new “Xbox One” i think it a piece of shit that someone in Microsoft was saying on drug hey you know what like mind fuck everyone for this new system and make more money like hell i be even million time riches and they can be more poorer as fuck. I like the idea of old and new together but it get to one point, this system is like Sega genesis, Xbox is on live support with kinect saying it a big thing. i say the kinect is like cd drive, it a part of they system that you dont need it fuck me over so many time on 360 it say it better it same old technology just slowly improve. it also well watch you and give you trophy or even achievement for your daily route, okay so if i wake up one day i get a achievement let me see if i don’t wake up i get a achievement call this “Nice job your died and your soul belong to Microsoft which secretly being headquarter of upper world of hell”. As well for old game they don’t transfer over to new one as well you must go to gamestop or local game company get a code for those game download the game oh and also have to buy your way to play the game? What the hell are you doing Microsoft. It like Microsoft just right now kicking me in the ball and back of my brain pushing there dick up to my face saying you want to play your game well you cant till you pay me more money. This system is dog, cat, bull, alien, inhuman shit all warp up in a gold box said made of gold but made out of yellow paint and make it shined saying “if you buy this we wont fuck you”. After you get the system and play your old game the Xbox One just shit at you like mother-fucking mike. After shiting on you everything in the world that shit at you shit. In your dream the Xbox one go into it shit everywhere around you and when you wake up. BANG that how shit face is born and i am one of those Shit head, that why i hate this new system and by god if i every have on in my house there well be a real life shit head people have to deal with. Thank you for reading it Jame and Mike and please give me your thought on it? Have a mother-fucking eagle and mike day. Cause when i see people buy it, the whole world be big shit had to deal it.
June 1, 2013 at 12:02 am
I really enjoy watching these videos! You guys seem to genuinely love just hanging out and playing some games. I would love to see you guys riff some classic movies from either James’ or Mike’s collection. I think it would provide some awesome laughs, and some great questions and theories about the films themselves. Please consider riffing some films because I would love to watch, and I feel you guys would be great at it! Thanks for all of the great videos, and I can’t wait each week to see the new James and Mike Play ones.
June 1, 2013 at 2:13 am
I had heard of this console before, but the oldest thing we had when I started playing video games was the NES. This was an amusing video. Sometimes its fun to just sit back and watch someone else play video games. And with you guys its not the epic journey that is the “Let’s Play.” While it was fun to sit there for a couple of days in my free time to watch someone play all the way through Skyward Sword, its even nicer to ust see you guys to just sit back for a little while and play the games you had fun with in the past. Excellent video! I also totally agree with Mike. Keep that console and game in working order and let it be the first game your daughter plays!!!
June 1, 2013 at 2:14 am
Lots of errors there….>.>;
June 1, 2013 at 6:49 am
You guys had a long video game marathon the day you shot all of these reviews. I’m guessing Mike smoked some meth beforehand for an extra boost, that’s the only way he could defeat the mighty James Rolfe.
June 1, 2013 at 11:48 am
Hey James and Mike. Liked this episode of James and Mike play the most since it featured a little more detail about games and their history. I also loved the AVGN episodes best that showed off gadgets here and there, gave background about companies marketing and development, and about the whole game itself.
Hope you can continue in this direction further.
June 1, 2013 at 11:52 am
Oh and one thing: PLEASE master the sound of your videos to 0db. I always have to get my volume all up and then these commercials come on afterwards, and of course they are as loud as possible and scream at me like they want me deaf. So please try to care a bit more about the sound. I would even do it if you’re too lazy^^
June 1, 2013 at 1:36 pm
Just picked up an Odyssey II mint in the box along with UFO!, K.C. Munchkin!, Football!, Baseball!, Alpine Skiing!, Boling!-Basketball!, and the Quest For the Rings (all of which in mint boxes) at a garage sale for $80. This video couldn’t be better timed to get me pumped to play it. BTW what’s with all the exclamation points in their titles? Where the games that bad they had to instill the excitement to play them? Great video guys, love the new intro.
June 1, 2013 at 3:50 pm
Sanxion !!! yessss!
June 1, 2013 at 4:52 pm
10:18 America …fuck yeahhh…. 🙂 watched it many times sooo awesome
June 1, 2013 at 7:33 pm
Hey James, I’d love to see you do a review for the Atari GameLine, the download service that allowed you to primitively download new Atari games with a modem. Or rather just do a review over Internet services consoles offered like the SNES Satelliview and Sega Channel.
June 1, 2013 at 10:57 pm
Hey James, do you think you could do a James & Mike Play of an Atari 8-bit computer, if you have one? I have the Atari 400, the first system -I- ever played, and essentially what the Atari 5200 SHOULD have been. From what I understand, the Atari 8-bit games were identical to the 5200 games, but the cartridges weren’t interchangeable between systems, you had to buy the right cartridge, and the joysticks, at least the joysticks I have, were way better than the 5200. Mine are your standard joystick, just a red stick, with a fire button the pad and on the stick itself, with a switch to tell it which button you’d rather use.
June 1, 2013 at 11:14 pm
ew this system sucks im so glad the 1st system i ever played is Nintendo
June 2, 2013 at 1:30 am
Howdy. Odyssey II was my first console too.
I think you glossed over a bit that Quest for the Rings was actually a full-on Lord of the Rings knock-off boardgame. It even required one person to be a D&D-style dungeon master. That kit was pretty awesome.
There were three of these elaborate boardgame style games. There was some stock exchange-themed game we never owned, but we really liked Conquest of the World.
A small detail you seemed to miss is that most of these games had separate modes — like you guys laughed at Speedway running ridiculously slow, but if you picked a different mode it’d have been a fair bit more challenging.
June 2, 2013 at 4:03 am
What song is used at 7:08?
June 2, 2013 at 5:46 am
Amazing coincidence. The Odyssey 2, and Speedway, was also my first video game experience, as well as almost the oldest memory I retain. Somehow we ended up with that console instead of the technically superior (and then already a year old) Atari.
In Spinout, you’re supposed to hold down the button to drive faster. It’s still not a challenge as such. Bizarrely, even at that age, I figured out that you can use the dotted line at the midway point to improve lap times, as the game relies on the cars’ contact with said line to judge whether a car has actually done a lap. This means you can touch the midpoint line, do a 180, return to start, and it still counts a lap. Give it a try.
June 2, 2013 at 1:46 pm
AMERICA FUCK YEAAAH!
June 2, 2013 at 6:46 pm
please get rid of this awful video player
June 2, 2013 at 7:23 pm
What problem are you having with it?
June 2, 2013 at 9:46 pm
Dude this is awesome!! Do more of these type of videos, extremely entertaining.
June 2, 2013 at 10:54 pm
June 2, 2013 at 11:06 pm
the best James & Mike Play to date
June 3, 2013 at 1:07 am
Pretty sweet. There should be a “James & Mike Play” of all of the worst Avgn titles. Well, perhaps not the worst. But a few of the ones that would be the most amusing.
June 3, 2013 at 4:01 am
your thinkin of iron mikes off road game mike, loved that game u just put in bunch of quarters and sup the hell outta your truck lol
June 3, 2013 at 10:57 am
I want to see them play Miner 49er on Atari 400.
June 3, 2013 at 11:42 am
James & Mike Play vids make me frigin laugh!! “America, Fuck yeah!!” lol
June 3, 2013 at 12:12 pm
haha Cumfart thats an awesome new word
June 3, 2013 at 3:07 pm
Cheers for knowing the Vanguard commercial. Also that perspective on the helicopter blew my mind.
June 3, 2013 at 4:38 pm
Mike, or anyone else, can you please tell me where the music that plays in the beginning is taken from. I would also like to know about the end music.
June 3, 2013 at 7:12 pm
BatmanStarWars…i love it ,lol. fun video guys.
June 4, 2013 at 1:36 am
Mike, I can’t believe what you typed into the word scramble game! I didn’t think you guys would know that word lol
June 4, 2013 at 8:10 am
If I were you, James, I would seriously talk with Mike about his extreme betaness. He is so beta, I can’t watch your shows anymore. Goodbye.
June 4, 2013 at 9:50 am
I remember this system. After K.C.’s crazy chase. The rest were actually worse than the Atari 2600 games.
June 4, 2013 at 10:43 am
Hey Mike – regarding Godzilla Star Wars, the Star Wars: The Clone Wars two-parter “The Zillo Beast/The Zillo Beast Strikes Back” is pretty close. A Godzilla-like monster called The Zillo Beast is captured on its home planet and is brought to Coruscant where it breaks loose and the Jedi and Palpatine try to bring it down. Pretty great episodes with a lot of nods to Godzilla.
June 5, 2013 at 6:38 am
Thumbs up for Super Offroad, I played that all the time!
Nitro-Boost – woooosh !
Great video by the way !
June 5, 2013 at 1:18 pm
HAHAHAHAHA cumfart… great job guys 🙂
June 5, 2013 at 1:22 pm
2084!!!!!! Robotron 2084 best game ever…damn its classic 🙂
June 5, 2013 at 7:49 pm
This is my first comment here, so be nice XD
Great work guys on doing this videos and all others. Ive been around the site since the beginning.
I have one little request… Can you do a “James & Mike Play” Batman and Robin for the sega genesis?
Its just an idea XD
June 6, 2013 at 2:10 pm
Awesome video! I played this console at Retro Revival Event a couple of weeks ago. I think you two would have loved it. Pretty much every console from the last 35 years of video games available to play with different games to try out. Not to mention classic arcade games free to play. Even had the Sega SG-1000, Sega’s first console. I also got to play Space Invaders with fruit.
June 7, 2013 at 11:10 pm
Great watch! But why doesn’t this video appear on the app?
My request: Jurassic Park for the SNES. I dare you to play it all the way through. I double dog dare you! With no save feature. And about 10,000 keycards!
June 8, 2013 at 1:15 am
My cousin had an Odyssey 2,I remember playing KC’s Krazy Chase. I noticed that KC was the initials of “Krazy Chase”, so maybe that’s where his name came from. My Crypto-logic puzzle is eizdceknse
June 9, 2013 at 6:17 am
Odyssey 2 doesn’t look as good as Atari 2600, but it sure seems to have some interesting little games on it. It could be a fun diversion.
June 9, 2013 at 8:35 pm
hey James or mike can please tell me what type of camera you guys use? I have been looking on Google for a long time!! I’m frustrated 🙁 please help me! and great video! I love the intro 😀
June 10, 2013 at 9:22 am
I actually own two Odyssey 2 systems and never hooked them up. I have a decent amount of games too. Looks like I may be hooking them up.
July 1, 2013 at 7:42 am
03:07 Guys if you press the fire button (never occured?) YOU GO FASTER!
July 1, 2014 at 9:20 pm
Crypto logic on James first level made me sick to my stomach, but not without laughter.
