Oh, oh ya know, having a baby, that’s just like a little minor detail, just a bit of a footnote

    April 18, 2013 at 7:10 pm

James, I have been a fan for a long, long time (ever since the TMNT AVGN). I almost shit my pants whenever you first broke the news about the movie and then once again when you first talked about your baby. I have been updating my “Cinemassacre Filmography” list (with specific dates on most of the videos) so I have really been hanging on to every word about this movie. I have read all of your blogs, seen all of Mike’s videos and everything else. Cinemassacre is quickly becoming my favorite website. I check it at least once a day. But after all of that, there’s something I don’t know if I missed or if you haven’t shared with us yet. That is: “what is you baby girl’s name?” I am pretty sure your wife mentioned that you’re having a girl during the Metallica audio slaughter. I didn’t catch a name. Well, whatever it is I’m sure its lovely. I am also sure that I am going to buy multiple copies of your Nerd movie and every suqsequent film you decide to make. My best wishes to you, your friends and your family.

I’m so fucking excited for this. My anticipation for the movie is equal to any amount I’ve ever had for any blockbuster or big name movie in the past. The cinematography looks really nice in the clips you played, and I love how you enrich our minds with all the behind the scenes stuff while not giving too much away.

Congrats on the baby and congrats on getting those epic shoots finished. Cinemassacre forever.

    April 18, 2013 at 8:55 pm

Congrats on the baby!!! Thanks for the update, really glad to hear about you trying to use more practical effects and less sci-fi movie cheese CGI. Can’t wait for the movie, it’s going to be great, I think we all would rather wait patiently and have you make the movie you want to make and not rush out something you’re compromising on to make some date. Keep up the good work and enjoy that baby time when it happens!

  • April 18, 2013 at 9:06 pm

Congratulations James! The movie is looking AMAZING! I admire your balance of family and work. Juggling passion is a tough task and you have kept your fans happy all the while.

If it’s a boy, you gotta name the little SOB after Motherfucker Mike…

Looking forward to your future, and thank you for your work.

that second group shot of people working…that woman on the bottom left…is that Mrs Nerd? I think I might recognize her from a halloween picture. or maybe I’m just crazy and seeing things.

    • LJNGameDesigner

      April 19, 2013 at 12:38 am

Considering his wife would be 7-8 months pregnant when that pic was taken, no, that’s not her.

Google “James Rolfe’s wife” and you’ll see her pic.

    • Lukas Sprehn

      April 19, 2013 at 10:18 am

No that’s James’ good friend Stephanie Yuhas from Cinevore Studios.

  • April 19, 2013 at 12:27 am

It’s so nice to see you happy and to know the good news!
Q: Is Mike going to make an appearance in the movie?

  • kunedog

    April 19, 2013 at 1:00 am

This video is unwatchable for me. It takes a while to start and then stutters, and then the video seems to give up and jump forward as if video frames are just being dropped. I tried to tolerate it for about a minute before it froze completely, and the audio stopped too. I clicked around the site and even previously working videos are now doing this. What happened?

    • culwin

      April 20, 2013 at 1:43 am

      Update your Flash?
      Try a different browser?

      • kunedog

        April 20, 2013 at 9:12 pm

Flash is updated, and the same problems occur in Opera, FF and Chrome. But the problem can’t be the browser, because all the videos had worked for a long time, until a week or so ago.

Thanks for the update, James! I’m so thrilled for you! Please, by all means, take your time! You rock to the nth degree, good sir!

  • April 19, 2013 at 2:11 am

I predict that all of the filming will be done by August. I’m probably wrong, but hey that’s why it’s a prediction. Glad to see you don’t have much left to do, James. All us hardcore fans know why it has taken so long and have no problem with it taking this long because we know we’ll get a masterpiece in the end. Here is an idea you might want to ponder when you make a DVD release. Include the video game you’ve been promoting as a bonus. Either as a computer game, or better yet in unofficial production cartridges for the NES. Now that would be an awesome special to go with the DVD when you finally release it in say…2015? πŸ™‚

  • April 19, 2013 at 2:28 am

I’m glad everything is going well with this movie. I’m widely interested in seeing what the finished scenes with the practical effects will look like after seeing a miniature model of the Nerdmobile and what looks like the Golden Gate Bridge.

  • Razgriz

    April 19, 2013 at 2:30 am

thanks for the update on the movie. take your time on it, i’d rather see a good movie you took your time on and did right instead of one you rushed through to get out there. i’m also glad you are using practical means then cg too, that bugs me in big budget films, its a cliche i hate, glad you are not focusing on doing that ;). keep us updated when you can. congrats on the baby, i also found i have one on the way too.

    April 19, 2013 at 8:24 am

Congrats on the baby James, does this mean we are going to have an AVGN Jr, cant wait for the movie man, keep up the good work.

  • Lukas Sprehn

    April 19, 2013 at 8:41 am

Actually it’s usally different when it comes to VFX. You usally send the most uncompressed files that you have to them so they can composite it and work with it the best way. And typically these files are unlocked and not put together as sequences. πŸ™‚ But it’s fine to do something else. But watch out, you can end up with some really nasty compression artefacting like colored, flickering specks that resemble noise but which aren’t actually noise. Just some advice.

    • Lukas Sprehn

      April 19, 2013 at 8:43 am

Uncompressed as in almost raw, or raw if it’s possible. But it’s ok to Log and Transfer the files at first, so that they can be turned into a file that may be easier for some people to handle such as ProRes. Though changing a lower bit file into a higher bit one can result in artefacting as well, and so can some weird codec. Again, just some advice that I think you guys will like πŸ™‚

  • TheBaron

    April 19, 2013 at 9:59 am

Awesome to see and update – and some behind the scenes shots. I’ll look forward to seeing both the movie and the other stuff πŸ™‚ Best of luck.

    April 19, 2013 at 11:06 am

    very good news

  • April 19, 2013 at 11:10 am

You had better have another 6 TB to back up the first one! Always have a mirror drive! Mechanical hard drives are outdated technology that is severely prone to failure.

    • Lukas Sprehn

      April 19, 2013 at 4:33 pm

      Agreed 100% πŸ™‚

I understand the hard work and the endless hours to finish a production of this magnitude, but in the end we all going to enjoy a true epic movie!

  • April 19, 2013 at 3:37 pm

    Thanks James!

  • April 19, 2013 at 4:25 pm

Am I the only one who expects Super Mecha Death Christ Version 3 to make an appearance as the UFO?

    • Lukas Sprehn

      November 9, 2013 at 5:48 pm

James has said before in an interview on something called Tainted Reality Telethon that Super Mecha Death Christ will not be appearing in the film, but that they have something even better in store.

  • April 19, 2013 at 10:38 pm

As some one who has a studied film, I know how difficult movie making can be. Not surprised you went the practical effect route especially after seeing your other non Nerd videos (Deader the Better is great!) I look forward to this film being finished however long it takes. Also Congratulations on becoming a Dad

  • WyldeGoose

    April 19, 2013 at 10:41 pm

And Many Happy Congratulations on the birth of your baby! Have to ask, though, if you feel like you have a lot of explaining to do about AVGN to your kid someday?

  • uberrainman

    April 19, 2013 at 10:49 pm

Thanks for the update James. Take as long as you need. I’d rather it be the best it could be, rather than it come out quicker.

Best of luck with all the remaining work and with the baby!

  • April 19, 2013 at 11:56 pm

The real question I want to know is: When can I pre-order the movie? I don’t care when it is finished; I want to be one of the first to contribute to its sales. πŸ™‚

    April 20, 2013 at 12:04 am

    April 20, 2013 at 12:14 am

All very interesting. I had an idea of what kind of work goes into making a movie, but I never realized it took this much work! I can see how it would take a long time, especially with all those special effects! I am glad to hear you are on the home stretch, though.

And congrats again, on the baby. πŸ™‚

  • April 20, 2013 at 12:52 am

Attention James! Be sure to do a call-out for VFX artists to help with post production. Would love to donate some time to do a few shots. I’ve already sent an email.

This video made me even more exited about the movie! It’ll be awesome and totally worth the wait!

  • April 20, 2013 at 6:30 pm

Hey James, I assumed that you want this to be released in theatres, I’m just wondering how big of a release it’s going to be, or if it’s even going to reach me geographically? I assume if that happens it’s going to be a limited release, but just thought I’d ask. Or straight to dvd/blu ray? Either way, it’d be cool to see this. Congratulations on the baby, you’re a brave man sir. Seems like you have things in order though, the best to you and your family plus new addition when it arrives!

    April 24, 2013 at 7:44 pm

Mate, what a project! Fingers crossed that by this time next year we’ll be able to see it. Certainly hope you have plans for a bluray run, or (perhaps more cost effectively) a HD digital download for purchase.
It’d be awful to spend so much time on special effects only to have to downgrade the quality for DVD.

  • April 24, 2013 at 11:53 pm

I’m actually glad to see that you guys take the time and walk the extra mile, I think it’ll pay off in the end. Boll videogame movies get shot in a month with a bigger budget but are pretty terrible. When I hear, what little details are getting considered here and the dedication of everyone involved, I really don’t care if it takes another two years. I have no doubts, that it’s going to be a highly entertaining!

  • larkhillv

    April 26, 2013 at 12:43 am

James, sorry if you answered this before, but are you shooting the movie on film or digital? I assume digital, but you never know. Also, since you’re such a classic movies type person, I thought you’d have a penchant for shooting on actual film instead of going digital–but I’m not sure what your opinions are concerning analogue vs digital movie making. A video on this would be very interesting! Thanks.

sweet lord you work very hard for your art James, where on earth you find the time for all this, especially with a family, ok I know making movies is not exactly working down a coal mine, but the creative process is exhausting in itself, I’m a singer song writer in the middle of writing and recording an album, and Jeezo does that stress the life out me, god knows what you go through, so I hope you get it all done so you can take a well deserved break!

  • June 25, 2013 at 3:55 pm
