great review mike. have you ever thought about reviewing the Sega Saturn game Nights Into Dreams? maybe you and James can do a harder challenge by determining what is the best & worst video game movies are.
March 19, 2013 at 3:58 am
man being the first to comment on an avgn or mike video for me is extremely rare. it’s not youtube sure , but I dunno it still is a rather out of body thing to say when it happens. it’s just one of those things you do when maybe later in life you start to admit things you never did like “there in the closet!”. little fun fact , that last quote I just did is actually referenced from Michael Keaton during his interview with David Letterman for Batman Returns. another funny Michael Keaton quote from one of those Batman interviews was when his son was asked what his dad does for a living , he said “he sleeps in a trailer”. XD
March 19, 2013 at 5:46 pm
Dude… what the Hell are you talking about? LOL
March 20, 2013 at 3:22 pm
I think he got the “shroom” reference instantly.
March 21, 2013 at 12:08 pm
Too bad your comment was posted 7 minutes after the first one though. Also, are you on drugs making these comparisons? LOL
March 24, 2013 at 3:04 pm
to BigMclargehuge , Buggylint , & LukasSperhn , No I am not on drugs. all I was saying is that I dont usually get the first comment here on this website. sure I could of commented properly , but I was tired and I wasnt thinking clearly. plus , I am stressed off beyond belief. I didnt comment properly , but your comments were out of line saying that I take drugs. I never have and never will. listen , we all make mistakes and we all say things we dont mean or comment without thinking clearly or typing clearly. that’s all. nothing more nothing less.
March 24, 2013 at 3:11 pm
if you gentlemen dont mind , I really want to drop this discussion now before it goes too far. I admit, I made a bad comment. it happens. I could of phrased my message better. but I wont get into another “that guy is stupid” kind of routine because that’s not something I can tolerate and I dont have the time nor the patience to start dealing with internet trolls right now. so like I said , lets just drop this discussion and move onto something else.

March 19, 2013 at 3:52 am
Surprised I haven’t heard of this game before…
March 19, 2013 at 3:54 am
you can be surprise in just how many games exist out there that we havent heard of before that tend to be either good or bad. the snes has a rather massive library of games that few have played beyond the popular titles. I think it would be neat if someone did the advanced research to see which classic game console had the most game releases.
March 19, 2013 at 7:57 pm
Just off the cuff, I’m going to guess the NES. It had, in North America alone, something like 800+ titles released for it, and was out and active for about 10 years. Especially if you take European games we didn’t get (which are only a few, but still), and throw in Japanese Famicom games we never got, I’m going to guess the number is close to 1000.
March 24, 2013 at 10:22 pm
@Devil_Rising Actually, there are tons more arcade games than console games of any type; just look at MAME- 20667 roms in all, and that’s just on emuparadise!
March 19, 2013 at 4:04 am
Hey Mike, could you review pandemonium 2 & 3 also? I think they made huge improvements over pandemonium 1.
March 19, 2013 at 4:28 am
Nice review! It looks like a fun game. Have you seen the Japanese version of the game? It’s called Magical Hoppers there. They completely changed the intro and character models.
March 19, 2013 at 4:47 am
Looks like I need to hit ebay up.. That looks awesome. I really do miss the old platformer/side scrolling games considering all we get today is variations on FPS.
Mike should review some of the newer Spyro games (the ones for PS3 and on). I personally hated those as I found them short, cheap and completely uninteresting.
March 19, 2013 at 9:23 pm
Your comment Is very wrong as you say “all we get today is variations on(of) FPS) well there are many different variations of games available today, If you want good titles, quite simply don’t play mainstream FPS game and limit yourself to your known knowledge of games, and even that’s a little wrong as some mainstream games such as ‘Grand Theft Auto’ offer VERY large amounts of variated gameplay and the upcoming one “Grand Theft Auto V” Is going too have Its’ own musical score, and It’s Rockstar so If you Know Rockstar you know It’ll be top quality.
March 20, 2013 at 5:54 am
Well yes, Rockstar does tend of deliver good quality games and I do enjoy the GTA series quite a bit. There is also Bioshock to look forward to, too.
There was Portal 2 which I enjoyed a lot minus the horridly short story. The multi is only fun if you actually have competent people to play with.. Most of the time, the case being children of people who try to play as if it were COD…
March 19, 2013 at 5:10 pm
This is amazing – Primarily due to the fact that this is the first game I seen a review on by you that I have actually played back in the days (and completed). Seeing your review made me remember it all and wonder where I placed it 😀 It was indeed quite fun, though I also remember spending hours trying to complete certain stages. If memory serves me right I played as the jester so likely thats why I felt it was a fairly hard game.
Thanks for reminding and recommending it 🙂 Its worth it.
March 19, 2013 at 5:35 pm
Holy shit, I used to have this game!
March 19, 2013 at 5:48 pm
Nice. Ever considered touching up on the “WarioWare” series? I think you’ve mentioned it in the past, but I think it’s worth looking into. The gameplay in each game is as simple as it gets, yet I find it to be one of the more addicting series out there. There’s also some really random, weird and hilarious stuff sprinkled about, too.
March 19, 2013 at 5:59 pm
Mike, thanks for another terrific “hidden gem” style video. I played a ton of PS1 games and have never even heard of this one. All the more reason I enjoyed your video.
March 20, 2013 at 6:19 am
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
March 19, 2013 at 6:46 pm
Good review. I always like your reviews, but this one for some reason seemed really smooth to me. I think, from your voice, you were pretty calm and relaxed and your flow was really natural.
I remember playing a demo for this many years ago on PC, I think it was on a PC Gamer disc. I really enjoyed it but never saw it in stores, because I would certainly have bought it. Think god for this modern age of digital distro, obscure things like this no longer have to compete for shelf space!
March 19, 2013 at 6:55 pm
looks like a good platformer with some great gameplay…ive never seen it or heard of it but damn if i was going to rent this game or whatever i wouldn’t cuz the cover looks so damn wack i mean look at the character on the cover he looks like a dumb piece of shit and screams this game insults your intelligence and looks likes one of those games thats cheaper than a normal new release game cuz it just sucks…they should of made a different character or something….anyways great review! and do more james and mike play episodes them shits are funny
March 19, 2013 at 7:01 pm
Hey Mike. Can you do a review of “Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return” for PS1? Its also a pretty obscure game, but was definitely one of my favorites growing up. Check it out if you can manage to get your hands on a copy. Thanks man! Love your reviews.
March 19, 2013 at 7:29 pm
Awesome review Mike. I love these kinds of 2.5D games and I think there should have been more.If you wnt another game in 2.5D on the PS1, check out the game Oddworld.
March 19, 2013 at 7:39 pm
loved the original on the Amiga.glad you brought this one up
Why do the cooler looking characters in videogames usually have a higher difficultylevel it doesn’y make sence. I always chose the jester character never realising it was harder. It was an instant classic though. Nice work Mike.
March 19, 2013 at 9:31 pm
Thanks for another good review Mike. I passed this game over numerous times thinking it was just a Nights ripoff. It looks really entertaining, those cutscenes freak me out a little though. If it hasn’t been mentioned yet, this game is available for purchase in the PSN store.
March 19, 2013 at 9:33 pm
I see Clock Tower in the background motherfucker! Could there be a future Halloween review for this series? Let’s hope so.
March 19, 2013 at 9:52 pm
Yeah I noticed that too!
March 19, 2013 at 9:51 pm
Oh man I saw Clock Tower in the background when you showed the game case. I hope a review for that is coming soon. It scared the ever loving shit out of me when I played it as a small child. It’s the only video game that managed to give me nightmares.
March 19, 2013 at 10:31 pm
The Dr. waaants to PLAAAAAAAAAY!!!
March 19, 2013 at 10:48 pm
Great review for a terrific old school PS1 game! I still love this game and would pop it in any day. Have you tried the sequel by chance?
March 20, 2013 at 12:52 am
My favourite playstation game of all time, and it was really great on the n-gage qd as well.
March 20, 2013 at 12:54 am
I’d like to give it a try, but my issues with perspective & the fact that I get dizzy really easily means I can’t play 3D or 2.5D platformers. I suck at them so hard & they mess with my head.
March 20, 2013 at 4:29 am
i loved this game when it came out
March 20, 2013 at 6:14 am
Excellent review Mike, many compliments! Thanks also for bringin’ back those PS1 nostalgia moments! Personally, I liked Pandemonium! 2 the most; what an amazing game!!
March 20, 2013 at 6:33 am
Pandemonium was the first Playstation game I ever played, and is my most-played platformer on the system to this day.
March 20, 2013 at 6:50 am
I used to love this game.
One of the few good “3D” platformers of it’s age.
A HD d’load remake should be made!
March 20, 2013 at 7:02 am
I remember this game back when it first came out, I used to rent it from a video store around the corner from me. I even remember the store owner telling me a cheat for it so you couldn’t die unless you fell down a hole xD (all before the helpfulness of the internet too)
March 20, 2013 at 11:05 am
“wacky or wacyness” 😀
1. wild confusion; uproar
2. a place of uproar and chaos
March 20, 2013 at 12:13 pm
I have this for Saturn known as “Magical Hoppers” Better characters, anime intro. Fun game however.
March 20, 2013 at 1:50 pm
this was the very first PS1 game i ever played, classic.
@Henry – there was no Pandemonium 3
March 20, 2013 at 2:47 pm
Best review by Mike by far. I remember seeing that game on the shelf and having no idea what the hell it was about lol.
March 20, 2013 at 3:59 pm
Good review, Mike! You should review more PS games or maybe some Dreamcast games as well. That would be awesome!
March 20, 2013 at 4:12 pm
I had this game for the PC as well. Great review, Mike, I wll have to look for this one again.
March 20, 2013 at 4:18 pm
are you really arrogant enough to think ps1 owners were not aware of this game? everyone had this
March 21, 2013 at 1:41 pm
No, certainly not everyone. I did know of the game’s existence, but before watching this video, I wouldn’t have been able to tell what exactly what this game was about. And it’s not like I lived under a rock, I owned more than 50 playstation games.
March 27, 2013 at 4:56 pm
I had a PS1 and believe I rented it before but didn’t appreciate it. The irony is you sound quite arrogant..
March 20, 2013 at 4:50 pm
That’s an obscure game by Crystal Dynamics. I’ve never heard of it. I didn’t realize 2.5D games were around back then aside from some Crash Bandicoot levels. And I’m not sure why, but it’s really funny to see realistic human characters jumping around on platforms and bopping enemies.
March 21, 2013 at 4:55 am
great review mike! played this game with my dad back when it just came out, had to only be 6 or 7. i really liked this game. my jaw dropped when i saw this review on the front page of cinemassacre. keep up the good work.
March 21, 2013 at 7:48 am
Congratulations to you, James, for finally hitting a MILLION SUBSCRIBERS! I can’t wait to see the Angry Video Game Nerd Movie, it’ll be a blast and something to remember! Also, a big hand to Mike Matei and Kevin Finn for helping Cinemassacre’s coming of age. Stay creative 🙂
March 21, 2013 at 5:35 pm
Hey, how did you change your picture?
March 21, 2013 at 5:34 pm
This is a comment.
March 21, 2013 at 8:13 pm
you sound upset bro. everything ok? I think you need to do the second review of game gear games. or start becoming the depressed gamer.
March 21, 2013 at 10:16 pm
you guys should do PS1’s Overblood
March 22, 2013 at 3:00 am
Every time I wanted to rent it, I would pick something else, like Gex, APe Escape or Megaman Legend. Thanks for the review Mike!
March 22, 2013 at 3:13 am
Great job Mike!
It sucks that the nerd videos are so far and few between. I guess James is branching out which is a bummer for me, as I come here primarily for game reviews. I get he has other aspirations but its a bummer for fans that want to see AVGN. You (mike) are fantastic though. You give plenty of gameplay and an in-depth review of whatever game you’re analyzing. Big fan man. Way to deliver. Keep ’em coming dude!
March 22, 2013 at 3:09 pm
Never mind the Velocity troll, Mike. As the rest of the comments indicate, fans of the site overwhelmingly support your contributions. Thanks for this review, had played Pandemonium quite a bit when it came out, but subsequently forgot all about it. Definitely a “Wow” moment!
March 23, 2013 at 4:14 am
First off I was being honest, which is part of what this site is all about as we enjoy somebody’s review. I didn’t troll anybody, I simply made it clear that I didn’t like this review and feel that Mike is simply better at other things. It’s not a good review, wikipedia this game and then watch the review because he obviously read it before making this video.
Secondly, he banned my account for my opinion. My comment is gone while you obviously responded to it and I had to make a new account. He didn’t like that I mentioned his review was bad. It’s the same problem he has with people on Youtube, he can’t handle any form of criticism, he just wants people to praise him while his reviews are pretty terrible in comparison with the ones that James does.
I’ve lost all respect for Mike. Not just because he banned my account but because he can’t handle somebody giving an opinion about him while he bashes movies and games all the time in his videos. When he works with James I feel they compliment each other and make good videos, but when Mike works alone his videos are a waste of time filled with grammar mistakes and mundane comments.
March 23, 2013 at 9:30 am
Firing insults at someone, whether you’re being honest or not, is what being a troll is all about. It is very different than simply stating your opinion. Ever hear that old phrase: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it.”?
I think the fact that he continues to make videos means he handle “criticism” very well, but what you’re doing is called “Shitting on his doorstep” and he’s simply cleaning the shit off.
March 25, 2013 at 11:16 am
Based on your comment about “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it?” then James shouldn’t say anything about all those games he reviewed as the Nerd. He’s firing insults and trolling whether he’s being honest or not. This is a bad review.
If Mike could handle any criticism he wouldn’t be banning users or removing comments. He does the same with James’ Youtube account where he disables comments and ratings because people don’t like his videos.
March 25, 2013 at 1:55 pm
First off, I’m not here to defend Mike in anyway. He’s a grown man… but in reply to your response…
AVGN is a character. It’s parody, it’s a joke. Were not taking what he says all that seriously, we’re laughing because a 32 year-old is still angry at these inanimate objects from his childhood. It’s not the same thing as maliciously telling someone who’s trying to earn an honest living that they suck at what they do. Your argument is invalid.
“Constructive critism” and honest opinions are welcome here. Not insults. They get erased.
Cinemassacre is a business, not a forum for free speech. If you were to walk into a KFC restaurant and had a legitimate complaint, they would respect your opinion, but if you went in there and immaturely started yelling at them in front of other customers and tell them that their food tastes like shit, you’ll most likely get thrown out. This is what happened to you.
My point is, if you simply said “This review wasn’t very informative” or “This reviewer’s style doesn’t appeal to me” your account most likely would not have been deleted. But you didn’t, did you? “This review suck! You shouldn’t do anything but draw AVGN title cards, blah, blah, blah”.
If you don’t understand the differences, then I’m afraid there’s just no point in talking to you anymore.
March 23, 2013 at 4:34 am
If I don’t get the posting-successful-but-not-really-bug then I just want to say that this game is awesome. Always been one of my favorites and I’m not sure why I’ve NEVER heard anyone really talk about it (at least in video form) outside of just a passing mention.
Also, since Mike is an awesome reviewer I can’t wait.
March 23, 2013 at 9:24 pm
Great review never heard of this game aaaand now I do mike seems to do more videos faster than James but still they are both awesome!
March 24, 2013 at 9:16 am
Hey James you ever played predator for atari computer? You should make a review of those games.
March 24, 2013 at 2:32 pm
Recently me and bros have been collecting uncommon to rare games that we can find.. This is one of them imo, I remember when this came out, I didnt find appeal to it cause it didnt seem enjoyable.. Now Im keeping eyes peeled for it thanks for a great review.btw did this also appear on Saturn as well?
March 24, 2013 at 11:00 pm
I just bought Pandemonium 2 and dam it was a tough game. The password system was unique for it’s time and certainly well made.
March 25, 2013 at 3:27 pm
Good review, Mike! I remember hearing so much praise for this game back in the 90s but I never got around to playing it. Luckily it’s in the PSN store so I can see what I missed out on. 🙂
March 26, 2013 at 11:01 pm
Odd for a PS1 game to have a password instead of just saving with a memory card.
March 27, 2013 at 4:58 pm
Good review. I think your game reviews are far improved from when you started Mike. Your serious, straight-forward reviews are entertaining to watch and a nice stream of content. Same with your “weird movie reviews”(Not sure what the official title was before)
March 27, 2013 at 5:58 pm
you should review ‘Spider: The Video Game’ for PS1, now that’s an obscure gem, really challenging and cool platform game where you play as a genetically modified spider that can equip weapons like flamethrowers and rocket launchers lol.
April 4, 2013 at 1:32 am
Ha, that sounds bad ass. I’ll definitely have to check that one out.
April 4, 2013 at 1:30 am
Great review, Mike. I know every generation has it’s good and bad games but think about it, can you picture anyone making a game this quirky and fun presently? I can, but I don’t think it would be as common as it was years ago. Sadly.
April 5, 2013 at 7:48 pm
Hi Mike or James, please review Journey to Silius. It´s a great nes game by Sunsoft with super music, and the game was originally meant to be a terminator game.
April 6, 2013 at 4:25 pm
I didn’t realize that I’ve played this game until 4 minutes into the video. Great video Mike.
April 9, 2013 at 6:34 pm
Awesome review mike as always. Keep them coming
April 10, 2013 at 6:34 pm
Just found my old childhood note book, where I noted down level codes, cheats unlocked and so forth while I was playing my games, and among those on the very last page was also a code for pandemonium 😀 Oh the memories.
March 22, 2014 at 12:11 am
Definitely can’t judge a game by its cover, I didn’t expect so much depth and creativity with the levels for this game. nice!
