Start working at home with Google! It’s by-far the best job Ive had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this – 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringin home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, http://www.g00.me/Work

Wow!!! Total curveball, didn’t expect a game review at all this month! This truly made my night. Now my girlfriend thinks I’M the nerd for freaking out over this video… ha!

  • CodyPeacecraft

    October 24, 2012 at 1:18 am

I’m incredibly pleased with the Atomic F-Bomb. Also that The Nerd Gets an ATB in an 8-bit setting. A great way to do Ghosts n’ Goblins. NEXT, maybe do Penn and Teller”s Smoke and Mirrors? I’d shit out my ears if I could hear what The Nerd has to say about Desert Bus. That game is a hulking mountain of elephant shit with tapeworms having an orgy inside. While shitting.

  • floydua

    October 24, 2012 at 1:18 am

NES FEVER!!! lol when i was little i used to get so into games that after hours of frustration (on this game among many others) my face would start physically burning to the touch, my mom would call it nintendo fever! thought i was alone in that, lol.

  • sliphazard

    October 24, 2012 at 1:29 am

Simply awesome, totally unexpected and greatly appreciated. I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to do an AVGN this month, especially with how busy you must be on your movie (which I will see and buy day ONE). The greatest work any artist can do is to show his fans that he cares. You sir have done that 10 fold. I wish you and your wife a great halloween.

  • candytooth

    October 24, 2012 at 1:35 am

There was info about your history with the game and the game itself that I already knew, and it kinda spoiled the episode for me, but I think you did a great job with everything else in terms of keeping with the theme of the episode and the upcoming holiday and reviewing a holloweenish looking game, and i’m assuming you used a pumpkin in the back that was carved by your wife, that was sweet of you to use in the episode.

  • artusqf

Great espisode!, its always great to have the nerd back

    BTW, just a few facts:

The NES/FC version of ghost and goblins wasn`t developed by capcom, it was made by a third company called MICRONICS. They developed shitty ports at most (exed exes, 1941)

The famicom version of ghost and goblins doesnt have continues..well, at firtst, because you can use them with a cheat.

I’m sure it took a while to get footage of beating it twice, to only see a really bad engrish end screen. Now i’m off to go try and deal with Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, on Genesis/Mega Drive…let the f-bombs begin! That and maybe more Yuengling…

  • BleedGreen215

    October 24, 2012 at 2:47 am

  • Stefanoragnopazzo

    October 24, 2012 at 2:50 am

Finally a game that i beat twice too. I took about a month and the curse factory was really working for me in that month.

Anyway this AVGN episode was gold i tell ya, if they take long but this is the quality i can wait all you want. Great work man!

  • Jenny

    October 24, 2012 at 4:17 am

Thanks for taking the time to make a new nerd James! I have to say, I think this ending beats the Ghostbusters ending by a little and I only say that because you have to play the damn game twice, and it’s hard enough the first time to be it’s own game. Cruel!!! Just remember James, Feel Strongth Welling! Meaning, you beat this game you stupid asshole so here’s to your fuckness!! πŸ˜›

  • k1kk1

    October 24, 2012 at 4:28 am

I love that you have time to do a nerd video, I understand you have much to do..
But somehow I thought you had lost some caracter here, I felt that you wasn’t that angry that you used to be. Espesially since this is a really hard game..
Maybe it’s because you have a lot to do.. But as uasuall, I’m such a big fan that I will watch all of your videos anyway!
    Keep up the good work!=D

  • angelspawn77

    October 24, 2012 at 4:53 am

Got really excited when I saw the new video, curious as to why you didn’t wait until Halloween to post it though, or Halloween eve, nevertheless, I’m super happy we got a new AVGN video to watch.

Another thing, the first Evil Dead remake trailer comes out in a few hours and I’d love to hear your opinion on it, even if its like 5 minutes of your thoughts on it or however long you can make it, I don’t expect it to be a very long trailer, I think its just a teaser if I remember right. Anyways, keep up the great work James and can’t wait to see the movie.

  • angelspawn77

    October 24, 2012 at 4:54 am

Oh and btw, loved the end where you did the RPG style battle with the game, awesome stuff.

  • LicaWolf

    October 24, 2012 at 5:01 am

I love to have a new episode, and I’m grateful you took the time with Monster Madness going on and you getting ready for the movie… but I agree with k1kk1, the Nerd didn’t seem angry enough, especially for such a hard game, at least I was expecting a major freak out when he discovered he had to go through the game twice to beat it. Still, it’s nice to have a new episode, I needed my AVGN fix πŸ˜› thank you again!

  • ninjamohawk

    October 24, 2012 at 5:35 am

  • Abba-Zaba

    October 24, 2012 at 5:47 am

Holy shit this was the most satisfying AVGN for me yet. I lived through this nightmare twice. First on a Capcom collection and then on the nes which was even harder. Still love to play it though even it does ravage me with ball blizzards and diarrhea blasts. Keep up the great work. Can’t wait for the movie.

Whoa! I can’t believe it! I just finished this game LEGIT on the Wii Virtual console. It’s considered one of the most difficult and challenging video games! I know I loved this game when it was rather new on the Commodore 64, the music was different but really-really good! πŸ˜€ I become to hate this game while playing on the Wii but soon (after a year of trial and error) I become to like it πŸ™‚ Frustrating as hell but satisfying if you can beat it.

  • October 24, 2012 at 11:51 am

I can’t BELIEVE you made the time for this with everything else going on PLUS Monster Madness and the movie trailer. Thank you SO much for doing this video. It was well worth the wait.

  • Sanshi

    October 24, 2012 at 1:33 pm

That’s a pretty nice review, but I should add something.

This NES port wasn’t made by Capcom, nor was 1942’s port, it was developped by Micronics (who hid their names). And James might not be aware, but they also made Super Pitfall.

How do you recognize a Micronics game ? Press Start in game, the sound sample is normally the same being reused for every single of their games on the NES (similar to the Konami games).

The worst, godawful game from this company : Athena. It was made by SNK in the Arcade, but the NES port must– no, IS one of the hardest, most frustrating, and ruthless games in existence, in fact, that could make an excellent AVGN episode. One thing I like to mention : they show a Continue option on the title screen, but you can NEVER select it. Monster trolling considering it’s already huge pain in the arse to play.

  • ILostMyYoshi

    October 24, 2012 at 1:38 pm

  • beavischrist

    October 24, 2012 at 2:17 pm

My first game was one of the spinoffs, Gargoyles Quest on gameboy, which i got when i was 5. That one wasn’t anywhere near as hard as G&G but still hard enough to keep me from progressing past the second level, it also didn’t help that i didn’t speak any english back then. Somehow i didn’t care though, when you’re a kid that kind of hard challenge is somehow more appealing that it would be to me today.

  • leightonandoff

    October 24, 2012 at 2:29 pm

Yay! A new Nerd episode. I like how it was acknowledged as being a good but unfairly hard game, rather than just being slated as a piece of shit. Also loving the Monster Madness. Great work James, thanks for keeping your fans happy. Keep it up. Awesome Show, Great Job!

Awesome James! This is one of your best episodes ever, in my humble opinion. Your ability to point out and describe the goofy aspects of games is truly unmatched. I really appreciate that fact that you take the time necessary to keep the episodes at such a high quality even if it means there will be less of them. Thanks so much for this and Happy Halloween, my friend.

    Great job James!

  • Joker83

    October 24, 2012 at 5:38 pm

I have never seen anyone do that, this is one of the hardest games ever. Like you, I played it all the time growing up but I think I only ever made it to the second stage twice. I totally lived vicariously through you in this episode, that was awesome.
Also, very cool that you are able to find home movies of yourself playing NES as a kid. I wish I could find some like that.

  • Amy

    October 24, 2012 at 5:50 pm

This was amazing. I remember playing this game when I was younger and never getting past the first level. School is rough right now, and having had this to look forward to after class was awesome! Great episode James and I loved the battle sequence at the end. Pure genius!

  • Spence

    October 24, 2012 at 6:17 pm

Is the game really proud of that ending? Is the enthralling exotic mutilation of the English language, combined with the majestic, abysmal void that is the black screen, really so opulent and gratifying that it warrants having to beat the game TWICE to see it?

After subjecting yourself to that misery and torment twice, it both baffles and infuriates me that the game even suggests that you do it again.

    Fuck this game.

Great episode James. Ghosts N Goblins has always been one of those games that I liked playing but your totally right about it being hard as shit. I’ve only made it to the 3 level, where you get ass raped by those red demon fucking things. I’m going to try that trick with shooting them once then running away to make them disappear, maybe that way I’ll have a fighting chance at making it to level 4. Thanks for the new Nerd episode, it’s great to see you back in action doing what you do best. Keep up all the good work, I’m enjoying the 80’s monster madness this year, an I’m looking forward to the AVGN movie trailer coming up here in the next couple weeks.

Btw, I forgot to mention how fucking awesome it was at the end. I <3 pokemon, second to kirby and COD. Maybe the NEXT review will be a Kirby game, if a bad kirby game exists somewhere. If not, the worst game I've ever played is a GameCube game called Wallace and Gromit in Project Zoo. I think it's the hardest, and most monotonous game ever made, and with the worst inspiration for the idea. Almost as bad as Jekyll and Hyde.

I’ve had this game since I was a kid and was only ever able to get to the blue level with all the devils. I have seen the ending though, by using the stage select cheat :p

    Hey James,
I want to rephrase what others have said already
this is a classic/epic AVGN episode congradulations
I can watch this over and over again
I particularly got tickled by your description of games like ghosts n goblins
as “whiping us into shape and turning us into tigers!”
Id love to see the release of the movie, if you have one in Philly let me know so i can get bus ride down from canada to see it.

James, you’re a brilliant composer. You know how to connect with people. This was a great video, reminds me of the ones you put out a few years ago. My opinion as a faceless fan likely hold no serious value, but I must tell you this one at the end made me laugh like I did around 08. Keep up the good work, but dont over complicate things. You became an icon out of hard work and love of a good laugh and cherished memories. Hold onto that buddy, dont overshoot what you have already gained love and recognition for. Keep it simple and reap the benefits.

You have a way of capturing simple yet difficult nuances that bleed through some of the things I liked from tha 80s and early 90s movies. I dont know how you do it but I hope you can have a very succesful career in filmaking. I would try to support anything you accomplish. Every time I watch your videos I get that nostalgic feeling. Actually, I found the flame weapon the best weapon in the game when I played it through a few years ago. I thought it sucked, too, in the beginning, but it really makes it easy to beat the red devils. Just jump backwards and throw flame and you’ll almost always hit it, without getting hit.

I liked it enough for beating the last stage with the flame, going down to get the shield and then proceed to the last boss.

Was much easier than using the knife ^^

  • Ben_from_G-town

    October 25, 2012 at 5:07 am

Isn’t that you need the shield to beat the Devil, not that you get sent back a stage?

Great review. This one definitely had some major laugh out loud moments. And the ending with you fighting the cartridge RPG-style was perfect! πŸ˜€

  • Senna4ever

    October 25, 2012 at 5:52 am

I used to love this game.
First arcade game I ever completed.

It was hard, but not unfairly so…challenging I would say.
The knife is a crap weapon, fast yes but so damn weak. The torch (or “flame”) was the weapon to use. Yeah it’s tricky, but once you master how to use it…by not spamming the fire button and picking your shots. You’ll find the game easier.

However, Super Ghouls N’ Ghosts was the best in the series.

I’d love to see this franchise revived. Capcom also revived Bionic Commando a few years ago. I don’t mean the crappy 3D game, but the arcade remakes with the 2.5D idea.
I think Gn’G needs the same treatment.

Bring back Gn’G, it was an amazing series of games.

    October 25, 2012 at 9:23 am

    Great episode.
Seem to like your halloween specials the most.

Ghost n goblins was the game i got bundeled with my nes back in the late 80’s (it was a used nes and mom asked the clerk what game she should get for it, yea nice guy).
I loved the opening, loved the music and loved to hate the brutal difficulty.
the first couple of yoears i never got past level 2 and it took halv a year until i got another game for my nes so i played it alot.

But in the end its one of my most nostalgic and loved game in my collection.

FINALLY A NEW EPISODE BEEN w8ing for this so long noow :DD:D

  • Rebellion777

    October 25, 2012 at 1:51 pm

My only problem with this site (besides that sometimes the springboard player seems to hate me, but that’s what the youtube link is for I guess haha) is that I have to use internet explorer to post comments, anyway with that out of the way.

Yay new video!! I think I remember playing a version of this game online somewhere a long time ago…I think I didn’t make it past the first stage. The ending of the game seems kinda like a fusion of the Ghostbusters NES ending (horrible spelling and/or grammar) and the Karate Kid NES ending (leaves you with no satisfaction)…I hope the ending in the arcade version was a lot better, if even only just in the spelling.

I wonder what he’s gonna do for Christmas, would you believe I think there might be even MORE Bible games out there? I remember playing one on my grandma’s old computer, you were Moses and had to cross the Red Sea or something…it even had a two player mode where you would see who could cross first. I gotta admit to having a little bias to this since I’m a Christian, but doesn’t the bible deserve at least a couple really good games? I mean, that one that was basically Wolfenstein looks good for the humor factor, and that one I think foreign Noahs Ark one he did a long time ago was alright, but a really good one would be nice. Maybe a RTS where you played as the Israelites when they were first entering the Promised Land? You could even have other battles then, like having to hold of Goliath long enough for David to come and kill him or something, idk.

    Wow that was long…

  • Anthony33

    October 25, 2012 at 2:36 pm

I love that you have the same TV from back then. Today’s generation will never know the joy of beating a difficult game and the heartache you feel when you don’t, until the day you finally do beat it. They’ve just made games too easy now.

And if requests work, then please review Night of the Creeps for one of your regular movie reviews or Monster Madness.

Had to finally register to this site to bring an interesting tidbit of information for y’all:

The red devil enemies in the game (yes, the ones that still haunt us from childhood) are actually the inspiration for the character of “Firebrand” – The hero of the Gargoyle’s Quest game series. Even the sprite looks similar in the NES title.

There’s a few other similarities between the games, too. For example in the original Gameboy Gargoyle’s Quest, the second to last boss was named “Rushifell” (misspelled romanization of “Lucifer”) and he bore a striking resemblance to the LAST boss of the game whom you had to defeat with a specific weapon that was pretty damn useless in all other situations…

    Sound familiar?

In my opinion this is a good reason for James to actually review that game as well! While not being a -bad- game as such, it does have quite a few of those rather quirky or tedious bits that REALLY start to get at you after a while. To make the deal sweeter there’s one for each of the nintendo consoles – the SNES one actually being one of the most underrated games I’ve encountered: Demon’s Crest. I have a recollection James has referred to it in some previous episode, but I might be mistaken… and if I am, it’s still a fair to assume James does indeed know about these games.

Oh yes… and since I’m new to the comments section, I feel the need to say good work guys! Been a fan since episode ~10 or something along those lines. You’ve provided me entertainment (with surprisingly much replay value too) for many a year and I’ve never got to say thanks for it. (Except on Youtube) so here you go: Thank You.

    Keep up the good work!

  • john-san

    October 27, 2012 at 11:39 pm

Excellent episode! I’ve also played through Ghosts & Goblins a few times and I have a few useful tips for level 6 that most people don’t seem to know:

    1) There IS an extra armor pickup in Level 6!! This makes it much easier to complete if you end up in your underwear. Right after you kill the dragon, you go up the ladders on the left, and after you climb up the 2nd or 3rd ladder (before the floor with the fire pickup), walk to the wall on your left and JUMP. An armor will drop on the ledge to the right of the screen. AWESOME!

    2. You CAN get past the unicorn even if you have the shield weapon!! The trick is to not even fight him. Simply climb up the first ladder, then when he starts to charge at you, climb back down the ladder. Wait for a second and the unicorn will hover at the top of the ladder before he dashes either to the right or left (it’s random). Wait for him to dash to the right, then GO!!! Climb up quickly and run to the next ladder on the left before he can catch you. It works every time πŸ˜‰

I hope that helps my fellow ghosts & goblins players, Happy Halloween everyone!!

Great video! I should add that the ending in particular was SPECTACULAR. The 8-bit font… the menu selection… the varied attacks by THE CARTRIDGE (forget the official enemy name)… and, of course, all the obscenity.

Played like the whole day to get it done… The game screwed me over though, after many attempts i cleaned the room in level 5 in the second run with the knife! Then i went back to get the shield and it wasn’t there anymore… So after beating the dragon with the knife i had to get the shield and fight my way through the rest of it… But i did it!

  • November 15, 2012 at 7:19 pm

Okay…this might be a bit off topic, but I just have to ask…

You’ll see that weird little flashing icon in GnG? The one they use on the title screen and on the map to show your progress?

I don’t usually comment but I must say this is one of my all time favourite episodes. Ghost & Goblins was one of my very first games on the C64 and I rarely ever got past the first Devil, and I think only once did I make it to the Unicorn. All these years later your video inspired me to give it another go, i felt it was something i had to do. Because of work and other commitments I had to keep my console on for 3 days straight to get through it, but with a lot of blood, sweat and cursing i finally battled through and beat it (twice). Thanks for this video and thank you for the motivation. Completing Ghost & Goblins is 100% on my video games bragging list.

Thank you for opening up some old wounds, James hahaha! πŸ™‚

I remember getting this game as a birthday gift when I turned 13 (pretty fitting ain’t it?). At first glance, the cover gave me the impression that it would be more of a kid’s game, but boy was I ever DEAD WRONG!

Looking at the cover again now, you can clearly see Sir Arthur getting his ass kicked from behind by that Unicorn boss! It was obviously a sign of things to come with this hard ass game!

Anyway, I didn’t bother trying to finish this game until the year 2000. I guess that I was bored and needed a serious challenge! I didn’t have the internet yet, soI just trial and errored my way through the game, like in the good ol’ days.

When I finally beat it once, that obscure message came about with the word “illusion” standing out the most in my eyes. At first, I questioned what the hell I had just read, but then my instincts told me that I would have to play through the game again! My GOD!

For whatever reason, I decided to put myself through it and after about five hours of playing , the game had FINALLY been beaten twice in a row to get the good ending…

I was expecting to see the credits featuring the names of all the sick bastards who designed this game, but NO, they didn’t even bother revealing themselves to us! Probably scared shitless of an impending backlash and for good Ghosts F’N Goblins reason!

By the way, I never knew of the power of the knife, I always passed up on it and did decently well with the axe, especially against the dragon!

We see a change in style. Newer AVGN episodes aren’t angry anymore but you should keep in mind that James is getting older and forcing anger just feels and looks unnatural. Maybe things will also change after the movie is finished.

great choice for an AVGN review, there were a few ports of this game, I had the commodore 64 version growing up, the nes port did a decent Job though, we had the C64, the sega master system, the AMIGA, the atari 2600 in our house, my cousins had the megadrive and the snes and the PS1, which worked out well, especially for a kid in glasgow!

  • July 1, 2013 at 10:41 pm

you know if you beat the game twice and put in a secret code at the right time you see a secret secret ending screen i just read about it so i thought i would let you know

  • October 2, 2013 at 5:49 pm

When has an item ever stayed when you move off the screen? And of course it’s 99% disadvantageous. It has the same problem as Predator NES, picking up a new weapon destroys what you have / touching a weapon picks it up.
G&G SNES is pretty sick though, alltho.ugh the life meter still leaves much to be desired

This is one of those games that just pissed me off when I was little back in the nes days. Like wizards and warriors it just got you mad because you were never good enough to get far in it. Looking back it was actually a pretty good game though not really a classic.

  • December 3, 2013 at 5:21 pm

Easily a favorite game of mine. However, i have not officially beat this game, as it keeps freezing up on the second play through. Does every one else have this problem, or is the glitch gremlin just playing his dirty tricks on me?(just my copy of the game?)

  • Justin Middleton

    April 6, 2014 at 2:18 pm

The game is really hard of you’re a beginner, but if you’ve played it about a thousand times and memorize everything. It actually starts to look not so difficult. I can actually make it through most of the game without too many deaths, but once I get to level 5 and 6 my butt gets handed to me over and over again.

    September 4, 2014 at 10:59 am

It isnt a bad game, but either great. I tried to beat it, but i just cant past 2 stage, and i can beat Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 without too many problems. Maybe not my type of game.

I never understood those games which you have to beat twice. Its not even a part of the plot. Well, alright, it kinda is, but you gotta ask, what kind of underachiever made such a game?? Whats the point? Who in their right minds would want to play through a whole game AGAIN? Thats just trolling by developers.ο»Ώ

  • Rammer

    April 23, 2016 at 7:15 pm

I beat the SNES version legit only once. That was a big middle finger F.U. when I had to do the whole game again. Best to play this on an Emulator.
