Teen Wolf (1985)

James / October 17th, 2012

Description:ย Monster Madness 80’s-A-Thon! James reviews Teen Wolf starring Michael J. Fox.
Teen Wolf – He always wanted to be special… but he never expected this!

CORRECTION: As noted in the comments below, Michael J. Fox was the first choice for the role all along. He was too busy with Family Ties at the time, and Eric Stoltz was a temporary pick. Thanks!

Fuck Yeah I love this movie. Oh and yes this movie would have sucked balls without Michael J. Fox. The Dr. has spoken.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention about the extra in the background who pulls out his junk during the basketball game.

    • March 21, 2016 at 6:26 pm

In case you havent heard, it was actually a GIRL, not a guy!
Her pants were too tight when she sat down so she undid the button and zipper. Obviously, she mist have forgotten that they were undone when the extras were told to rise and ‘cheer’. Still its FUNNY AS SH*T!!!!!

    The Chewbacca input was great.

Well, to be fair to Scott’s dad, he was (as he put it), hoping he wouldn’t have to tell him about the family curse, since it sometimes skipped a generation.

    (Love this flick.)

    Just to correct.

MJF was originally cast as Marty in BttF due to MJF’s interest in the movie when they were location scouting. However MJF’s workload was high with Family Ties and he later became unavailable, so MJF was forced to pass and they then hired Stoltz instead.
The footage of Stolz was shown to the producers and they decided to wait until MJF was available (some say the Stolz footage was “sabotaged” so they could wait for MJF) .

Bob Gale has mentioned this in an interview.

in the italian doubled version of this movie his name is not “Scott” but they changed it to “Marty” due to the popularity of Back to the future, anyway i dont know what they were thinking!

    you can hear it here

    (like at 2:56 etc..)

I definitely remember watching ALL of those cartoons. It’s funny, nowadays my wife goes nuts on my kids if they watch more then 2 hours of tv at a time… I remember on Saturday Mornings I would get up at 6:00am, prep my cereal and milk, and i’d be in front of the tube till 12:30pm!

  • Cilliandrew

    October 17, 2012 at 5:15 am

Also, the tales i’ve heard about what happened with Eric Stoltz and BACK TO THE FUTURE are actually pretty terrible…Zemeckis wanted Fox, but he wasn’t available at the time, and at that point Zemeckis didn’t have the pull to hold up the film.. The producers said “Start filming NOW or this movie won’t get made”…. Spielberg actually advised Zemeckis to start shooting with Stoltz, but to NOT direct him.. Hang him out to dry.. Then show the producers some of the footage and convince them that you needed to recast when Fox was available.

More and more, 80’s Spielberg sounds like a pretty sneaky guy….

  • Peron

    October 17, 2012 at 6:38 am

Fun Fact: here, in Brazil, the name of this movie is “O Garoto Do Futuro”, that means THE KID FROM THE FUTURE (!!!).
They do a lot of this shit changes in names of movies here.

They have made TV series about teen wolf:

I heard that this isn’t directly related to movie but is inspired from it.

  • October 17, 2012 at 6:57 am

Frank Welker was in everything in the 1980’s: He was Slimer, Gameboy, various GI Joe characters, he voiced the Gremlins, Fred Jones. His resume is nuts.

  • angryrider

    October 17, 2012 at 7:00 am

I actually don’t like Teen Wolf, and although it seems like it should be a fine 80s film, even if mediocre by regular standards, there are things in it that just irk me. The first of which is that annoying Chopsticks they keep playing in the first parts.

  • JasonVoorhees

    October 17, 2012 at 8:12 am

James always seems to forget to mention that Frank Welker was and still is the voice of Fred Jones from Scooby Doo.

  • randyslack

    October 17, 2012 at 8:57 am

How could you skip over the coach? He’s the best part of the movie!

  • October 17, 2012 at 9:05 am

Where did you find the footage of Eric Stoltz in Back To The Future? That’s not in any DVD extras I am aware of. And there’s something needing a correction. You said that Fox was not the first pick for the Back To The Future Film. That’s wrong. He was. The only reason he initially turned it down was because of his schedule conflict with doing Family Ties at the time. That’s why Eric Stoltz was temporarily picked to portray Marty McFly. After awhile though Fox figured out what he could do to act in the movie and did it. Fox believes, however, this was where his issues began with Parkinson’s Disease because he wasn’t getting much sleep to make the film happen while still doing Family Ties. That was a very taxing ordeal on his body and thus began the twitching in his nervous system. The first Teen Wolf movie is still one of my favorites, but the sequel is a pile of shit for sure. Good review James. : )

  • October 17, 2012 at 11:39 am

I remember Teen Wolf the cartoon show…!
Here in Argentina it was called “Hermano Lobo” (pretty much translated like “Wolf Dude”); and the intro song was really 80’s-style catchy!

I just LOVE Frank Welker, Im trying to be a voice-actor and Frank is my Rolemodel.
Now there’s a guy who can do it all:
    * He also did Slimer in The Real Ghost Busters
    * Docter Claw / Brain in Inspector Gadget
    * Fred Jones in Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!
    * Hefty Smurf in The Smurfs and Azreal in The SMurfs Movie
    * Santa’s Little Helper and Snowball || in the Simpsons
    * Krulos / Rasp / Glyde in Dino-Riders
    * Also Skywarp, Mixmaster, Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, Rumble, Frenzy,
Ravage, Ratbat, Mirage, Trailbreaker, Chromedome and Sludge. in
Transformers and Shockwave, Barricade and Soundwave in the Dark
    of the Moon movie
those are just e few of the 100’s of voices he did.

  • Donnutz

    October 17, 2012 at 2:16 pm

    Fun Fact:
In Brazil, Teen Wolf got released way after Back to the Future.
The people in charge of making the translations and adaptations saw the success of BTTF and decided to cash in on it.
The Brazilian title for Teen Wolf became ” O Garoto do Futuro”, which translates to “The Boy From The Future”.

Yep. Teen Wolf + Brazilian Distributors = The Future Boy

Not to be confused with “I was a teenaged werewolf” starring Michael Landon.

Fun fact… Landon spoofed the film with a Highway to heaven episode called I was a middle aged werewolf.

Ah Ok so you did do a Return of the living dead review already.. you should do a new one because that movie was awesome! excellent effects, exclente story!

  • October 17, 2012 at 6:03 pm

I remember the Teen Wolf cartoon! I used to watch it every Saturday morning. Seems to me, it was on for a long time. I liked it way more than the movies, save for the fact that we have to watch the same transformation sequence in every episode, a la He-Man.

The Teen Wolf cartoon was played back-t-back with another of my and my sister’s favorites: Galaxy High. Two human teens are transfered to a school in outer space where they mingle with all sorts of aliens. Anyone remember that show?

Why do you guys keep using springboard for your videos? Blip always seems to work for me, but for a long time, springboard wouldn’t work with any of the desktop browsers that I tried. Now it won’t work with any of my mobile browsers. If springboard works for most people, that’s fine, but it doesn’t work for everyone.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the “Penis” shot in Teen Wolf. Go on youtube and type in Teen Wolf Penis if you don’t know the scene i’m talking about.

Its been debunked now(In full frame versions you can see its a girl) but still a very odd wardrobe malfunction happening in the background at the end of the movie.

  • Anthony33

    October 17, 2012 at 9:49 pm

Yeah the basketball game at the end is not only like The Karate Kid, but also like the playing montages during Hoosiers. Surprised you didn’t mention that too, since that’s also a movie with basketball in it.

And, of course he never turns into the werewolf at the end. The moral is about being yourself and winning fair and square and teamwork, rather than using superhuman abilities and doing all the work like Scott did before that point.

They should’ve explained a little how turning into a wolf somehow makes him a better athlete. And it’s weird how nobody pays attention to him when he turns back into himself, kind of funny.

  • Firx

    October 17, 2012 at 10:23 pm

We had Teen Wolf on VHS growing up and I just recently watched it on Netflix. I must say that the film holds up. Yes its silly 80’s cheese, but its worth checking out if you’ve never caught it before.

  • October 17, 2012 at 11:29 pm

Teen Wolf is a testament to Michael J. Fox’s likability, because without him it would obviously be terrible.

  • October 18, 2012 at 1:29 am

Holy shit. I just noticed in the 80-a-thon couch scene at the end of each review there in the lower right hand corner is a “My Pet Monster.” I totally remember a fucking LIVE ACTION MY PET MONSTER MOVIE. My dad rented it for me when I was…god I dunno, really little kid. Everyone remembers the cartoon and the toy, but not many remember the live action movie. I don’t think James is going to review it…but since he did Teen Wolf…and MPM is totally 80s…maybe he will…?

As for you, I’ve been watching since the third or fourth ANN video (is there any way not to say that without sounding like Mark David Chapman?…..probably.) and i have only one single statement proceeded by a question: You some how cloned my childhood and put it on to the internet… so how the shit did you get inside my memories?! I WANT ANSWERS, YOU MOTHERFUCKER!!!!

I guess I don’t understand how you could review teen wolf and forget to include the fact that when everyone hugs it out in the end because marty er Scott wins without his powers to do handstands on cars and smell out his buddy styles’ weed stash, there’s a dude in the background in this final scene wearing a red shirt and blue jeans. Oh and his tiny cock is hanging out. Pretty funny thing to slip past everyone.

  • October 18, 2012 at 1:17 pm

Awww you didnt talk about the guy who took his cock out at the end of Teen Wolf!!

  • October 18, 2012 at 3:59 pm

I could never figure out why in the movie, everyone knew that he was a werewolf, but in the cartoon, only a few people knew.

Teen Wolf is actually not as forgotten as you’d think. There’s a new TV show, I think on the CW network in the States (I’m Canadian and they air it on a different station here). It’s just loosely based on the movie, but it does have the main character named Scott and his best friend is Styles. Second Season finished earlier this year, and in all honesty it’s not half bad.

  • CrazyEmoOtaku

    October 20, 2012 at 10:52 am

That was well played playing the Chewbacca sound before showing him. I was just thinking that Teen Wolf in the cartoon intro looks just like Chewie, and thought he made that sound at first!

I had no idea there was a sequel or cartoon. I hear there is a new live action series on MTV, but I don’t know how good it is. It looks like they might have made it into a teen soap opera…

Indeed, Michael J. Fox was filming Family Ties, but he worked BOTH sets for a time. He would shoot Family Ties in the daytime, and would then at night would shoot night scenes for Back to the Future. That’s why a lot of the scenes he’s in for the first movie has him looking like he’s in some kind of stupor; he was literally only getting maybe 1 or 2 hours of sleep a night for several weeks. That’s what I call dedication.

I wouldn’t say Stoltz was a temporary pick either. He was cast, hoping that he would be good enough, but he played the part too seriously and both he and Spielberg thought that it would be better if he left the project. Spielberg then got Fox, obviously. If Stoltz played the part more comedicly like intended, he would’ve permanently been Marty McFly. He just left because things didn’t work out, not because he was a placeholder for Fox, that just doesn’t make sense.
