Monster Madness 2012

James / September 10th, 2012

Reviewing horror films all around the month of October has been a tradition on Cinemassacre since 2007. It’s been a tough year for me personally to be able to continue it, but I love doing it so much, I can’t let it go. It’s the least I can do to celebrate the Halloween season. So yes, it’s happening. It’ll be sort of an economy version. The videos will be less frequent, although the total running length of all videos combined won’t be any shorter than the first year. Keep checking in for the video promo later this month.

  • September 10, 2012 at 11:06 am

Yes, so happy to hear it James! I always get in such a halloween mood when the Monster Madness starts. I watch it every year and when I want some extra Halloween feeling I watch the old ones. It’s a tradition, and I hope you keep going as long as you love making them.

Dear James greetings from Mexico!! I’ve been your fan for 6 years and I’m also a big horror movies fan; every year I organize a sort of Marathon of horror movies, this year we will do it on november 2nd (Because here in Mexico we celebrate the Day of the dead) and we will have an internet page, if you wish you can check it at Hope you like it… have a nice day and we’ll know from each other again… in a closer point to our death…..

Monster Madness is easily one of the best internet video series, right next to AVGN (although we can’t really compare the two). Glad to hear you love making it as much as we love watching it.

    September 10, 2012 at 3:53 pm

Awesome James! Funny I was just at work earlier today and sat there thinking: I wonder if James will do Monster Madness this year? It’s something on this site I’ve never truly followed because I was always either late to the show, or just wasn’t in the mood for it. This last year or so you’ve really gotten me into classic horror type stuff and can’t wait for it. No need to stress yourself out for it though, just have fun. 🙂

    Oh, YES!

This is great news! I can’t wait to see what the theme is this year and I hope you know how much the fans appreciate you doing this despite your schedule. The little simple videos to stave off our ravenous hunger are a nice snack but things like Monster Madness are a real special main course.

    September 10, 2012 at 6:10 pm

This is truly some awesome news to hear. Last years monster madness was my first one. After the first few episodes I went back and watched every single installment from the previous years. I absolutely love this series and really appreciate you finding the time this year to make it happen! Keep up the awesome work James! I can’t wait for October.

  • LordGeo

    September 10, 2012 at 6:43 pm

I’m calling it: Gamera-thon! Now that every Gamera movie can be bought on DVD in North America in their original forms, & the 90s/Heisei Trilogy is on BD, James should totally do a Gamera-thon. As much as I enjoyed the more “traditional” horror movie reviews during Monster Madness, I simply loved the Godzilla-thon & it would only be proper to do a marathon for the green guy’s biggest non-Toho rival.

  • Grizly

    September 10, 2012 at 7:24 pm

Hell yeah! I would like to see you review some British horror film companies work. Maybe an awesome Dr. Jekyl & Mr. Hyde movie with Christopher Lee called, I Monster by Amicus films, Tyburn films Legend of the Werewolf with Peter Cushing would be cool. Regardless, any Monster Madness videos are my favorite thing about Cinemassacre.

Before Cinemassacre, Halloween was just some annoying time when I had to shoo kids away from my door. I didn’t much care for horror movies or anything kin to them, but finally, 27 years later, I’m a Halloween junkie and it’s all thanks to James. Keep changing lives, man.

Gotta love being born in October (27). You always make me happy with Monster Madness before my birthday, Monster Madness is like, one of few video reviews, that i watch since first time, and still looking forward to watch. I hope in this year, you’ll make even greater videos, but it will be hard, since i think all of the Monster Madness videos are ones of the best videos you ever done.

Hi James, I’m a fan of your work … of Argentina, well, look, you should know that there are a YouTube user, not if one is done by the videos, but this posting some videos very similar to yours, stole up to the song of your intro, here is a link you can see in the robbery as well to a picture of the joker batman your video … also copied to the nostalgia critic … but that’s another topic, someone who reports this youtube user … is a thief!

@metalero-a-220 I think “Kill him” is a bit harsh. But you’re right, he is stealing other people’s stuff to make his (comparatively poor quality) videos and should be reported for it. But why did you post this in the Monster Madness comments and not e-mail James directly?

  • MercerDrake

    September 11, 2012 at 10:32 am

Good to know, maybe you can get Mike to review some horror games across multiple platforms. I’d love to see you review more horror comedies this year as well if possible. I’ve been watching a bunch and I’d like to see content based on that personally.

  • September 12, 2012 at 11:18 am

Glad you are going through with it. I have no issue with the format where the videos might be a little longer but less frequent. I find when you have a chance to really discuss a topic and sink your teeth into it for a while it ends up being a really great discussion, and you bring in tons of insight and details that normally might not pop up in one that is half the running length. It is those details I appreciate (as well as the humor, but short or long you always manage to slip that in).

And even if you re-use the old monster madness opening animations from a previous year (or cut a montage between the last few) instead of dedicating a ton of time animating a new one.. I appreciate what you are doing as I know between these videos and finishing off the many aspects of the film has you really insanely busy. Jees do you even game anymore?! (I do miss board james.. lol)

I have being waiting for this videos all year long since the previous Cinemassacre Monster Madness. I can understand you guys don’t making them this year, and the fact that you aren’t, i mean, you aren’t giving up on them this year it’s just fantastic. I don’t care about the length, as long as you guys had fun doing them i’m sure they’ll be awesome, so thank you very much for continuing the tradition : D.

don’t worry about having to do a redux version of Monster Madness, i’m just glad you are doing it this year too, at this point i see it as a tradition (also, thanks because MM really sparked up my passion for this genre), but i understand is hard to keep on working on it, if you work, have a normal life and stuff, you have very little time for “extras” like this.
But it’s great to see you have a real passion for this, and even if you’re busy, you’re gonna do it anyways, in a way or another.

Btw, nice video to get in the halloween/MM mood already. 😉

I think most fans expected this, James, and no one in their right mind would hold it against you. 31 reviews in a month, even as short as they were, is a ton of work even when you had the time, so with the movie in the works, that’s just too much to ask of anyone.
Don’t burn yourself out trying to please us. Do what you can, get the movie done and know your fans are behind you.

I started watching Monster Madness in its first year (2007) and I was 15, now I am 20 years old and still, each year, I’m waiting once more for what has become the most amazing Halloween Tradition of all time! Not only does it celebrate Halloween itself, it honors the movies I love to watch and helps me find new ones all over the season. I hope this stays a tradition for a long time. Thank you for your time and efforts James!

Review “Prince of Darkness.” It’s a truly underrated gem by John Carpenter. The cast, minus Donald Pleasence, is pretty bleh… but the story is pretty complex, well-written, and has a number of very freaky moments.

I cant say that I’m shocked. I do a (written) Horror and Monster DVD movie review every year, and that’s a ton of work that goes into just that, so I cant imagine how much work 31 videos would take.

That said, Monster Madness is the highlight of my Halloween and I would be very sad if you didn’t come through this year..

    Hi James,

Greetings from France. Can’t wait this year’s Monster Madness.
I don’t know if your into playing guitar but did you notice this ?$T2eC16hHJIQE9qUHu0VFBP+L%29ZHJHw~~60_3.JPG

Pretty instrument to celebrate Halloween and Bela Lugosi ! (note : I am NOT affiliated to ESP or any brand, and I don’t sell guitars. Just wanted to tell you about this in case you missed it)

Anyway, I love your work (The Dragon in my Dreams was so touching. It blew my mind) and can’t wait to see AVGN The Movie. But before that, take care.

  • September 16, 2012 at 8:30 pm

Hey James, you’re the FUCKING MAN! I look forward to monster madness every year. And every year I’ve NEVER been disappointed. Keep up the good work, my man. Just don’t burn yourself out again, please, if not for the fans and the content and all that, do it for your health. I know that should be reversed, but James, you seem like the kind of guy that would put his work and his fans before his health, that’s why I have it in that order.

    Looking forward to MOOOOONNNNSSTEEERRRR MADNESS!!!!!

  • September 16, 2012 at 9:44 pm

This guy!!!! Having a very busy year, still making the time for a nice good ol’ Monster Madness!!!!! Woo-hoo!! Personally, with lots of people discrediting Motherfucking Mike (after all – boo hoo – he’s not – boo hoo – James – boo hoo), I think his clips are awesome! His posts a nice addition to the game community. To the point, funny, lots of know-how on games from all ages. It’s Motherfucking Mike!

Just a couple of weeks, Cinemassacres and Cinemassacrettes :D, and it’s MONSTER DAMNESS… erm, MADNESS!!!

    Keep up the good work!

Hey, Mr. Rolfe. I apologize for asking you this. But for your upcoming Cinemassacre Monster Madness 2012 reviews in October, would you like to take upon my honorable request to do “The Omen” series? I would like to see what your thoughts are in that film in general. If you do so, I personally thank you for taking upon my request. If not, it’s cool with me. But I do look forward to seeing what movies you’ll review next month during Halloween.

I finally remember what Cinemassacre’s Monster Madness reminds me of: Monster-vision with Joe Bog Briggs!

That old TNT late-night horror special that would feature old-newish horror movies. Mostly bad ones, but it was still great.

    Aw, hell yes James!

I’m glad to hear that even with all the movie stuff going on, you’re still wanting to do another year of Monster Madness – I know I’m not the only one that appreciates it! Is there anything we (the fans) can do to help out?

I can’t be angry or unhappy about James being absent or Mike doing

videos in his place. I think Mr. Matei is was most can called James’ right

hand man. I will say James proved his loyality & respect to the fans

when James began his quest to bring a movie of his own creation into

reality. He couldn’t personally do it alone & so his family, friends like

Mike Matei, the fans he has made worldwide & even the guys from

TGWTG offered some help in his travels. I think we can all wait a little

I can’t wait for Monster Madness. That would be awesome Ginger Snaps (2000) and I Spit On Your Grave (original, 1978) get reviewed.

I would like to see you review a bunch of movies that no one has heard about and give them a rating. Suggest movies to watch in their place if a movie really sucks or even simular ones as well so we all can improve our movie knowledge and libraries.

Reading some of the comments, I realized that you have the most intelligent, thoughtfull, and interesting fans of anybody or anything I’ve ever seen!! They’ve already said everything that I wanted to say about Monster Madness, and I think that’s a great reflection on you. So I’ll just shut up and say that I’m looking forward to it too!! And I’m proud to be among your fans.

All I can say is I wish I found Cinemassacre sooner. I have only been aware of it’s existence for about a year. I of course have gone through all of the AVGN and movie reviews during that time. I, unlike alot of James’ fans, actually prefer his reviews/commentary on horror films than his video game stuff. Don’t get me wrong.. I love his video game reviews. Talking about old school nintendo games gives me all sorts of great nostaligic feelings. But not as much as old school horror films 🙂 I grew up on this stuff.

MONSTER MADNESS is just terrific. It’s easily the best halloween tradition on the internet. I geeked out hardcore about the Godzilla-thon.. I think that was the best one so far.

Anyway, this site is great. James is awesome. He’s the kind of guy I could grab a beer with and talk to for hours.

Thanks for doing this James. This is my first post, and I just wanted to express my appreciation.
