The Nerd’s Anger Management (AUDIO)

James / August 29th, 2012

This is a 32 minute guide to relaxation and inner peace. It’s something I always thought about doing as a joke, sort of like something Andy Kaufman would’ve done. It’s kind of along the lines of reading the Mega Man 2 book out loud.

It’s also something that you can genuinely enjoy and use to help yourself relax or drift away to the land of sleep.

James, can you list the songs you used? I recognize much of them, but can’t place which game they came from.

I know a few were from Mario 64 and Zelda LttP, the others I’m not sure.

    • July 30, 2013 at 12:57 am

I’m almost positive he went from FFVI to Quest 65 at 28:45, I freaking loved that game, most hated it though.

This is some crazy psychedelic stuff, man. It reminds me of the lyrics to “Tomorrow Never Knows” or “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” or something.

It’s like an interesting cross between Nerd anger and a Timothy Leary LSD instructional pamphlet from the 60s.

    Funny stuff!

I love this! The music from Mario 64 is so soothing (I never realized that before). And was happy to hear to music from Aquatic Ambiance from DKC on this. I actually will use this to relax. James Rolfe (and all of his personas) quickly became my favorite gaming personality and this video only increases how much I enjoy him.

THErapists lol , I thought I was the only one who always saw it that way. I’ve taken Anger Management and I do have a therapists and go to groups for stuff and I can say much of his advice is good and matches professional advice, his technique is basically Progressive Muscle Relaxation. His breathing technique is also sound advice. as is the rest.
Conclusionon who’d thought the Angry Nerd would give sound Relaxation device?(plus it seems far less corny/gay then the professional kind,. one more reason the Nerd is Awesome!!

Idefinitelyitly be thinking of the Nerd next time relaxation is done at group lol.

    Super Castlevania 4. (I think level 4)
    Mario 64 (Lava land)
    Mario 64 (Docks)
    Mario Paint
    Duck Tales (Moon stage)
    Sim City (village)
    Donkey Kong Country (underwater stage)
    Final Fantasy 3 (SNES)
    Link to the Past (Town)
    Mario 64 (Lava land repeated)

    August 29, 2012 at 2:07 pm

I was on my way for a nap when I saw this, so it was perfect. Maybe I’m just a silly female, but I do consider James to have a soothing voice when he’s not throwing out verbal fire and brimstone. Even the humorous parts were perfect. Laughter is a great de-stresser. Anyway, thanks for making this. I like all your videos, from the epically in-character to the embarrassingly candid. And thank you VERY much for providing the track info. Sometimes, I hear a clip in one of your vids and the familiarity haunts me when I can’t figure out WTF it is.

So relaxed now I don’t even know if I need that nap. I’m about ready for something to step up to me so I can tell it to fuck off and deliver a mummy bitch-slap. Ma ha.

    August 29, 2012 at 2:08 pm

I really enjoyed listening to it, it helped me to unwind after a hectic day at college, which most of them tend to be. James, you are an inspiration to us all!

  • August 29, 2012 at 2:49 pm

the mega man 2 reading a few years ago helped me get to sleep a few times and was just kind of a weird neat thing, i always wondered why you didn’t do anymore Jeff Rovin books. this is pretty kick ass, and also the music from video games is a kick ass touch. I think a killer idea for a video would be your top ten favorite video game soundtracks and your favorites from each game. The music for some reason always triggers the memories of my childhood more than seeing the game or playing it again.

I like how you kept some humor to it without killing its effectiveness. This actually is quite relaxing. I think what I liked most about it is that you used music from games. I actually use to turn on my consoles just to let some of those songs loop in the background at night when I was younger, particularly the mario paint song you used.

    August 29, 2012 at 8:33 pm

Well done James, as u know things happen for a reason and this is a critical era for our spiritual instincts. I think we are depraved of meditation in this day and age when really it is very much more important to us as a whole than most people realize. Thanks for once again touching the inner imagination. It is almost like a voice of truth and friendship whispering deep into the soul saying “wake up.. wake up”. Much appreciated for makin me feel like a kid again.

    August 29, 2012 at 9:38 pm

I am on my way out the door to work and don’t have a lot of time to spare, but I knew that if James was suggesting I spend a half hour in some way, it’d be worth it. I wasn’t wrong. This really hit the spot, and even though I have no professional opinion to offer, I truly couldn’t see how a lot of this wouldn’t be greeted as an inspired reimagining of a lot of the existing meditation recording orthodoxy that has been undermined because of how well-established to the point of cliche it is. I’ve been freaking out about a lot of impending life choices to make, and I don’t know how he does it, but it seems like every time I have some serious inner turmoil to face (and I’ve had a -lot- lately), James posts something that in some way helps me out, and not in a trivial or incidental way either. I actually imagined going to the Nerd Room as my imagination spot, no joke.

Thanks again, James. You have no idea.

Wow, thanks a lot man, I feel realy relaxed now, I just don’t give a fuck. I give the lowest amount of fuck humanly possible… as in none at all. And my middle fingers are so streched. I visited Monkey Island ina my imagination, and Donkey Kong was there, stealing the princess, but I didn’t give a fuck, he can have her, she can go fuck herself in anny castle she likes. Yeah, I was in Mario World, the most relaxing place ever, right? There were coins and 1up’s everywhere, but I collected none of them, not a single one. Because I just didn’t give a fuck. I just imagined myself having unlimited continues, and it was so. Gee man, this is great, I feel like going on a killing spree, because that’s what I always fantasized about dooing, ever since I saw The taxi driver with Robert Deniro. I am the angel of death, on crack, and steroids. Thanks a lot for this, I’m going to share it

  • Sakura4anime25

    August 29, 2012 at 11:02 pm

Wow, that was really nice. I was half expecting it to all be just a joke, like the first part, which was hilarious and I couldn’t stop laughing. When it got to the mummy part though, it gradually got more serious and it had some beautiful imagery and it was indeed very relaxing. Thanks a lot for this James, after a surgery I recently had, I could barely sleep at all for months and although I’m better now, I still occasionally have a little trouble sleeping so I’m going to keep this handy because I think it would really help.

  • DTysonator

    August 30, 2012 at 1:27 am

This was very well thought out, James, much appreciated, man!

The first half was hilarious with the whole “fuck”…”off” inhaling and exhaling business haha :).

The second half became more serious, so I tried closing my eyes and imagining all of the scenery and such, but the word “mummy” brought back some bad memories, unfortunately!

You see, as a child, I found mummies to be truly fascinating. I was totally into them, reading about Egyptian history in class and drawing out mummies in their trademark tombs and such :).

One of my favorite action figures at the time was the mummy from The Real Ghostbusters series, so I was clearly wrapped up in all of the mummy madness!

And then Double Dragon III The Sacred Stones came along for the NES. I was VERY intrigued, because I noticed that one of the missions took place in Egypt, according to a comic book ad. I was so looking forward to making it there someday :).

Years would pass before I finally reached the Egyptian mission. When I did, that section pretty much ripped out any of the mummy bandages that I still had left around my child-like heart. It REALLY pissed me off, like we’re talking: “FUCK”….”OFF”!

Sure there were mummies in this game, but slow as they were, as James mentions, they eventually reached their goal.

Even though I later went on to finish this game, my respect for mummies had been put under wraps.

So yeah, imagining myself as a mummy actually makes me mad now! Fuck off Acclaim/Technos!

    AH…now that felt better!

Seriously though, you did a great job here, James with this very refreshing idea, minus the mummy reference of course :).

Daily exercise is another great way of excorcising one’s personal demons. I dedicate about an hour each morning towards some very random stretching, facial expressions, punching, kicking and on the spot cardio. Maybe I’ll make my own video some day and it will rival Richard Simmons’ work out sessions, who knows haha :).

  • August 30, 2012 at 9:34 am

Wow, James. I haven’t even listened to this all the way, and already, I feel the nostalgic value from it. You and I share something in common, for I too used to listen to these sorts of tapes, mostly when I was younger. One of them ended up getting lost, but I could probably find it again, as in digital form, it’s still for sale. Another one didn’t have any words in it at all; it was a relaxation tape with nice, peaceful ambient music, and yes, I used to listen to it almost every night, falling asleep. I did a rip of it to my computer a few years back, but as I chose to record it in midrange, it didn’t turn out as good as I remember. Guess I could remaster the FLAC files. I’ve been meaning to do that, but I’ve been pretty busy with other things, so it hasn’t happened yet. Anyway, thank you; I’m quite appreciative of this, personally, even if it is a joke. And hey, I might use this to drift off to “the land of nod” sometime; I’ve already done it with Nerd videos, so, thanks for providing something else that I – and others – can use for that. This is gonna be good…. πŸ˜‰

I needed this. Today i became suicidal. I understand people on here with believe i am just starving for attention, but i am not. I was at the end of my rope, and then i listened to this. Thank you so much, you calmed me beyond belief and made me laugh, as you always do. Living is much better when you can tell all your worries to fuck off. Again, thank you so much James.

Dear James. This was amazing. I did laugh at certain times since it was rather silly. however I actually felt very relaxed, and when I tried to move my arms slowly after waking up, they were like jelly. This was very helpful and I would love to request more of these in the future. Theres something about someone else directing you to envision certain things that makes this even better than doing it without any audio.

James, I am a first time commenter but I have checked out your many reviews, AVGN episodes (multiple times in some cases), Monster Madness specials, short films, and many other series, so I guess it goes with out saying that I am fan of yours man!

I checked this out, really quite intrigued but not sure what to expect and I have to say that I had a good laugh but I thought this was really cool and thoughtful at the same time. I was taking a look at some of the other comments, and I have to agree that this relaxation audio clip really helped me as well. I have been going through some personal tension recently and needed to shut my eyes whilst being transported, getting lost.

You might be going through a lot of stress right now with your AVGN movie, but don’t forget yourself to tell the world to “fuck off” and take some time to shut those peepers when times are tough. Keep up the good work buddy!

It’s amazing the ability that James Rolfe has to be successful in everything (in most of the aspects) he decides to share at Cinemassacre. I’m surprised at how this audio succeeded in being funny, nostalgic and, surprisingly, really relaxing. (when you stop laughing at the brilliant crazy analogies).
I may sound arrogant, but I’m sad to read comments from people who seems to not understand how the creative mind works and needs to create different types of things. “The Audio recording is faster and can save time to do the other things we’re busier at”? Yes, of course, but who can argue about the quality of this and what this experiment has achieved?
    It is really admirable.

Maaan, I felt Like Boris Karloff after that, but also this music and all the images, they helped me to see the world so differently, reminded me of what i am and what i want to do, if that’s not an Inspiration, than i don’t know what is!) thanks a lot, this was exciting experience unlike anything else)) “at your own pace” line is really insightful! at first i thought to myself “how can it be relaxing and funny at the same time?” because you know, laughing is somewhat closer to the godzilla’s roar than to the floating serenity, but i was surprised at how it actually just helped to immerse into this bizzare imagery way beyond this world….thanks again,)))

James, I started listening to this, and I remember thinking “No way am I actually going to have time to sit here for 30+ min”. But then you said “You deserve this time.” And I thought, “He’s right! I do.”

I layed back, and enjoyed the entire experience…mummy wrappings, marshmallow moons, becoming one with the ocean.

I was a little confused at one part when we “broke free of the moon’s gravity” You said we were going to a strange world, but later we found out it was just Earth. I felt tricked, and lied to! I had to go into Godzilla mode all over again! HAHA!

Seriously though, I’m going to have my fiancee listen to this. She needs it! Thanks, James!

Ok, I get it. The Nerd needed to chill out. But last time you decided to do this James, we got Nintendo Power. It was a fond look back on some memories that I would have forgotten. Not some stupid audio bull shit like this. Im sorry James but your voice is not soothing, in fact its creepy like this. I have to admit, I never thought I would see a bad movie short from you. Well famous last words cause here it is. NO EFFORT, NONE. your just sitting there. Review something DAMMIT. There’s a reason why its called The ANGRY Video Game Nerd.

You wanna know what I was thinking when I loaded this. “Oh yay, another AVGN video, let’s see what funny torture the Nerd is gonna review today”. But no, we get James Rolfe sitting in the nerd room talking about THERAPY!!!! You know James when you tell us you rented a game from the video store for the weekend when you were little. You get home excited to play it only to find out its a load of sharded racoon poop that makes you wanna have an anal evacuation. It ruined your weekend right? Well, we’re not little kids anymore, but DAMMIT this ruined at least one hour of my weekend.

    Your AVGN, not a Therapist.

And to all these other posts, Fuck you, because you know this was shit, you just didn’t have the balls to say it. Next time you wanna chill out Nerd, review a good game, like StarFox, or Goldeneye. At least that will be fun to watch than this abomination of nostalgia. My ears are bleeding from the torture. We need to have the Nostalgia Critic come review this Bull Shit.

    I expect better…. Don’t go Joel Shumacher on me…

  • August 31, 2012 at 2:12 pm

Wow, people really get pissed when the nerd isn’t pissed. Very interesting. Kinda reminds me of poor people. Never satisfied with free shit. I may not have the time or full interest to watch this whole video at the moment, but when I look at the comments to make my decision of whether or not i’ll watch it later, I’d much rather hear about how informative or creative it is than how much “it’s not what I wanted and gonna cry about it”

  • Volbla

    August 31, 2012 at 2:14 pm

Oh you sad little people who for some unintelligable reason think only games can be made fun of. What i heard from this was good stuff. Maybe not as good as his best game reviews, but far from as bad as his worst. If you didn’t find it funny, whatever, but if you didn’t give it a chance because it wasn’t what you expected you are stupid, or you can be honest about not giving it a chance and we can just forget about this and move on.

Keep experimenting, James. An artist needs to find new ground from time to time.

I see a lot of negative comments here. But hey people you dont HAVE TO listen … decide for your self. dont complain just leave. πŸ™‚ I just know the nerd is doing whatever he is feeling right todo. Not all things in live he’ll ever do in live will turn into gold. How can we expect that from him? for free? most people just watching and doing nothing. If u don’t like it, move your ass and come with something better. until then, we’ll have todo it with stuff like this. Anyway looking forward for het next big thing for the nerd. Fan forever, some junky comments can’t touch me. See ya all. I love you all. Especially the nerd, and also mike. He is such a cute-face. Anyway I am planning to play the AVGN the movie in a local theater here in belgium/the netherlands/germany/luxemburg, are there any people who would like this idea? were can we gather? is there some kinde of AVGN fan forum? gentlemen its about time to make some!

Hey, James. Long time fan, but I never really comment much. I did the entire exercise and found myself laughing sometimes when I probably shouldn’t have been. it was very relaxing. A few times throughout it though i found myself thinking: “You know I’m sure there’s some top quality goblins in comment section right now.” Unfortunately, I was right.

I personally think it’s great you’re experimenting with videos like this. It’s what any film maker should do. I’ll admit I haven’t enjoyed all of your work. I did enjoy this though. For what it’s worth, there’s quite a few times where I like James Rolfe a lot more than I like AVGN. On video of course.

Long time fan. Always will be even if there’s a few things I’m not fond of.

Thanks for everything, James. You too Mike if you read this.

I actually really enjoyed this. I read the comments before listening and got a bad idea about the audio but found out that most people were just simply being arrogant. I’ve been a fan since 2008 and have felt that Cinemassacre has helped me grow up through my high school years (Turning 19 in a few days). I’ve had it rough but always turned to the nerd to help me through the bullllllshit. So now this is just another step forward in the nerd’s repertoire of different things to try out. I think he did a damn good job communicating to us gamers and movie enthusiasts by saying, “fuck it, nothing matters” and bringing you to where you need to be to release your stress. Thank you James, and Mike too for all the extras he’s been providing through the years to keep the site running well. Fuck those people saying you need to stick to a formula. I saw the formula during the barbie video.

This is an AWESOME relaxation technique!

It had me laughing, which was hard to relax to. But I ended up in a trance, which had me way chill.

If I could critique one thing, I’d critique that you didn’t have enough “oomph” to wake the subject back up. I had to force myself.

But then again, I work a 12 hour shift unloading BS at fucking Wal-Mart…LOL!

I feel truly refreshed after listening to this and 100% calmed down. This you success with at the same time as you mix in some of the best humour in the world. This video is a masterpiece and I have and am going to recommended it to some of my friends. Good job, keep this up!

That…Was fantastic. This audio was so effective to me, I recognized all the music cues and maintained that mummy pose throughout. At first my place was in the nerds room with all those games but it changed once I thought about it. Great job James for making me into a mummy and sending me to a better place.

My god. This worked amazingly. I feel so refreshed and relaxed. It was so funny. And that place at first it was a beautiful familiar spot in the woods, being surrounded by everything I love, then all of a sudden, I saw all of my champion pokemon from previous games. Including my great Houndoom and Raichu. Then, all of a sudden I was starting my journey in Pallet Town with a cute new Charmander. Instant bonding, walking right beside me. We battled a rattata and then sat back and smoked a joint under a beautiful big tree. Lol I sound like a fucking hippy and obviously a pokemon nerd, but fuck you. I’m me, bitch.

I was listen to your voice yesterday on my bed. I was so relaxed and concentrated then suddenly appears an “Insectoid Witch” only to break my concentration, I really wanted to pay with the same coin, I mean I might suck my blood back from that asshole bug, but I did the easiest solution: turn on the ar conditioner and kept my head calm again instead.

I usually don’t comment here, but I’ll give my two cents.

I often see quite a lot of “this is the best video ever!” comments and sometimes I personally feel it’s an overstatement – but there’s bound to be some people that enjoy James’ work outside of AVGN. Everyone has a different taste in entertainment. It also goes without saying that Rolfe’s work is very versatile and always improving, as proven by the display of the legacy stuff he did when he was younger that he’s been kind enough to share with us. To jimmythechief, who said the praising opinions on behalf of this video are overhyped nonsense – shame on you.

It’s a wonderful thing that James still stays true to his core fanbase with Nerd videos and we’re all eagerly awaiting the next AVGN video, sure, but there’s no need to troll here. There’s plenty of quality content coming in on a monthly basis and while some might see a bit of it as fluff to hold us over, J.R. has a long running history of pulling out remarkable pieces like this, seemingly from nowhere.

James was honestly quite modest – too modest, I’d say, in his preface on this video. The video is wonderfully edited and the music choices superb. I listened to this last night, while incredibly stressed over some personal things going on in my life, not really expecting much. I didn’t think I’d get a wink of sleep, but like many other posters here have said, this video was able to work a lot of stress from my mind and put me right at ease. The combination of great hand picked game music with fine transition, the familiar & friendly tone of our pal James (I felt a lot of sarcastic Rolfe in this video, at some parts moreso than Nerd), the breathing techniques complimented with bits of trademark nerd humor.

Every time you guys get itchy and bitchy for a Nerd Review, just spare us the shitty comments and listen to this video instead.

TLDR: Thanks, James! Keep kicking ass.

    Hey James

A lot of thing happend to me in the past year, and I could’nt calm myself. As it turned out, you are, apparently, the only one who can calm me down. The sound of old video games and the word fuck over and over again, that’s what I needed to hear. Even my girlfriend wants to hear Mario’s underwater theme song before going to bed.

You’ve woke up my 8 years old self, and god know it’s been a while since i’ve spoke to him. And that lil guy wants to say thanks.

Yo James, this is awesome! Not only is it funny, but it IS relaxing. Good job man. You crack me up! I like the fact you used Super Castlevania’s calm music from one of my favorite sections of the game. That game had awesome music! I also like the fact that you keep to the nostalgic games opposed to the new games. I like the new games, but they don’t have the same feel as the old games… back when they had to have a good storyline/imagination to make the game work instead of falling back on the graphics. A game’s music has always been the most important thing to me, like the cinematic sound of FFII (FFIV in Japan). Anyway, I like your stuff. Thanks for making our world a little bit easier to live in. Take care man!

By the way, I like the game music you put in here. So far I recognize Super Castevania, Super Mario 64, Mario Paint, Donkey Kong Country, Final Fantasy III (Japan’s VI), The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and finally Super Mario 64 again… all great games I love to play!

Finally laid back and listened to all of this on MP3 audio, and I gotta say, well done James. This is one of my favorite videos of yours, and it’s truly great. I hope you read this/all these comments so you really see what a great job you’ve done with this and everything else on your site/youtube career. You’ve not only brought humor into other people’s lives, but also given us much more than that in videos like these. Whether it be inspiration, or something to help us cope with whatever we must in our lives, you’re really making the world a better place with just these videos and what you do. And it takes a really special type of person to do something like that.

    Keep it up.

  • Kuuenbu

Imagine you’re in a world made of glazed donuts.
You’re like, “Dude, that’s fuckin’ sweet! I can’t believe the world is made of donuts!”
It’s a beautiful world made of all kinds of donuts: regular, blueberry, jelly-filled, clawfingers, you name it. Maybe even some cinnamon rolls, just to mix things up. And the whole world is made out of them, so you can just lie down on your stomach and eat the ground.
And you never have to worry about running out, because they always grow back.
And you never have to worry about getting fat, because you don’t give a fuck and there’s no one around to give a fuck about it.
And you never have to worry about getting tired of donuts, because there’s every kind of doughnut in the multiverse at your disposal, with all kinds of flavoral attributes. Alien donuts that all encompass the human nutritional system. Caffeinated donuts. Protein donuts. Donuts that taste like chicken. Donuts that taste like roast beef. Donuts that taste like milkshakes. Donuts that taste like apple pie. Donuts that taste like raspberry caramel frappachino. You name it, it’s there.

You can stay here for as long as you like. Or you can travel to a world made of other wonderful things. Like boobies. Or butts. Or both. Or schlongs, if you’re into that sort of thing.

This is really good. I like to curl up in bed with my homemade Metroid doll and listen to this. Especially since almost every waking moment of mine is stressful in some way, shape, or form. Leaky bathroom ceiling. Hard as shit games. Evil sister. My agoraphobia. Losing something near and dear to me. Shit happens. I just sit back and tell it all to go fuck itself like James says. I think of him as a good role model, especially from hearing this recording. It’s nice to hear soothing words from him and let time and life go on without me for half an hour every once in a while. James, if you ever read this, let me say thank you for being the only one in my life so far that has helped me keep from being sent into a blind rage from so much stress. Thank you for this recording. Thank you.

  • November 11, 2013 at 6:27 am

Alright, I know I commented about this audio track over a year ago, when it first came out, but having recently experienced a complete rebirth of my inner child (of about age 8 or so), I figured I’d give my thoughts of how I felt after listening to it again, particularly near the end of the track. I went through it, enjoyed the whole thing once more, laughed where humor was used…and the part where James mentioned “your old bedroom as a child,” I’m not ashamed to admit that I teared up a little. All the funny things he described, I was able to see, though…and, recalling a part of the reasons why I have experienced my rebirth (though this alone was not sufficient to do so, being only a part of many things at work), I chose to inject a few of my all-time favorite cartoon characters, in that segment: namely, from Animaniacs, the Warners; Yakko, Wakko, and Dot. (Incidentally, they were also the ones I chose to have laugh, along with me, during the playground segment with the word “fuck”; a bit out of character for them, in retrospect, but perhaps not entirely, due to their zaniness. Besides, I didn’t have a lot of childhood friends. A few, yes, but many of them were simply acquaintances. Ergo, through the power of my kid imagination, I had many childhood fantasies, a great number of which included cartoon characters that I liked, including the Warners.) Near the end of this timeslot, I also saw my dearly-departed mother, back when time was kinder to her… One day, I believe I shall see her again…

Those were some of the best years of my life, before the events that transpired, which nearly completely destroyed who I was, came forth. And now, thanks to my rebirth, I have the blessing of re-experiencing all the joys of childhood, albeit now, through the eyes of a man. What was stolen from me, and too soon at that, has been returned. Personally, I thank the one whom most know as “God” (but who I know as Ahayah), and among several others, I also thank you, James. Thanks for showing us that you care about life, about what you do, and about your fans. It means a lot to us. May you and your lovely family be blessed. (On a side note, I may not NEED to re-order that other relaxation tape now; I think this one is even better.)
