Great list, most of these are in my top 10 NES list. The only thing I’d really change would be Final Fantasy in place of Life Force.

  • scat3710

    August 16, 2012 at 10:19 am

Yea, I’d have had a similar list too. But I find Super C higher than Contra odd.

  • Stuessy

    August 16, 2012 at 10:20 am

No Castlevania at all? That’s a big surprise for me.

  • The Utility Man

    August 16, 2012 at 10:28 am

Interesting list. Other than Metroid I’d have to say I really enjoy all of them, never liked mazes though.

    I am surprised there are some things excluded such as;

-A Castlevania game, given how much you’ve brought them up
-A Dragon Warrior game, though RPG’s don’t seem to be one of your main focuses so I guess that’s not so surprising
-Any of the Disney games, for the most part they were all pretty good
-Mega Man 3, usually everyone struggles to pick between Mega Man 2 and 3 and ultimately just includes both
    – Lastly, The Guardian Legend mostly because of Mike praising it so much

Still though, I guess you can’t fit everything on a list of 10. This does make me interested to see a list of your Top 10 Worst though.

  • Phil_le_poulet

    August 16, 2012 at 10:32 am

Great List. I was curious to see which Mega Man game(s) you would put in this top. Man, MM2 always get all the love! It’s really unfair IMO because all 6 of them are phenomenal in their own way. Also, it’s interesting that you put Super C before Contra. The biggest surprise for me is that I thought you would put a Ninja Gaiden game in here somewhere. Also, which version of Tetris do you prefer on NES? The Tengen one kicks ass!

Finally, may I make a suggestion? It would be great if you could make a comparing list with Mike’s choices.

  • Phil_le_poulet

    August 16, 2012 at 10:36 am

Oops i forgot something. It would be interesting to know why you did not include a Castlevania game in your top 10. Maybe it just falls barely at number 11?

  • Phil_le_poulet

    August 16, 2012 at 10:47 am

If you compare the list James made in the FAQ with the new one, he has all the same games already except he adds 2 for this top: Life Force and Tetris.

    August 16, 2012 at 11:07 am

    Nintendo ALWAYS kicked Segas ass!!

    August 16, 2012 at 11:08 am

What happens with the newer entries? when i try to post something there it says im a spambot! WTF??

  • August 16, 2012 at 12:22 pm

Surprised to see that Castlevania isn’t there

  • JoeHaaafs

    August 16, 2012 at 12:51 pm

Nice. I’ll jump into the group that is surprised Castlevania isn’t on your list… Also, I’m assuming Tetris is the Tengen version…

As for me, I won’t list everything… But I wouldn’t have many choices to make because over half of my list would be Mega Man games… And North and South would be thrown in somewhere. However, my top game would have to be TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project. That was my favorite game growing up… It’s no Turtles in Time, but the nostalgic factor is very high for me.

  • August 16, 2012 at 1:50 pm

I think there is a good reason why you base most of your AVGN’s around the NES: because it had way more god awful trash than it did good stuff. Thank God for the SNES.
    1. Tecmo Bowl
    2. Mega Man (all)
    3. Metroid
    4. Zelda 2
    5. Punch Out
    6. Final Fantasy
    7. SMB 2
    8. SMB 3
    9. Ninja Gaiden (HAI!)
    10. Tetris
    11. Castlevania
And Blades of Steel and Contra. Lol look IGN put Festers Quest in their list LOL

  • Nintendomaniac

    August 16, 2012 at 3:35 pm

Despite not having any of the NES Castlevania games in this list…I am pretty confident James will have Super Castlevania IV in his top 10 SNES list. The game is the best Castlevania game ever made in his opinion (and I definitely agree). It is easily one of the best games on the SNES, and one of the best games ever made.

In the last two years i’ve played every Nes game (Pat NES Punk if you’re reading then you were part of the inspiration for this because of your NES marathon a few years back, as was James for his videos when i first started to study video game history seriously three years ago). James your list is good, but if you study the games in context (and exclude ports), with all the other games in existence the time (like all the arcade, master system and gameboy games) you will no doubt modify your list slightly. First, i dont think its wise to include ports like lifeforce, because as console games they were dumbed down and the sound effects were not as good (like in GnG). You should get rid of Double Dragon 2 and Tetris, the former because its not very good and the latter because it was more suited to the gameboy than the nes). In place of those three games then you should include Castlevania, the Ninja Gaiden trilogy and the original Super Mario Bros. That would increase your list size to 12, but it would also be almost the perfect NES ‘non traditional’ action game list… guaranteed. P.S if you’re reading this thank you for your latest Snes vs Genesis video, i’m going to watch it now.

    August 16, 2012 at 6:35 pm

    My list:
    1. Dragon Warrior IV – Best storyline of any NES game.
    2. Tecmo Super Bowl – Best and most innovative sports game.
    3. The Legend of Zelda – Made for some pretty intense speed runs.
    4. Super Mario Bros. 3 – Big Island, need I say more?
    5. Bad News Baseball – Of all the baseball games, this was by far the best.
    6. Dragon Warrior – The RPG that started it all.
    7. Journey to Silius – Best music in any NES game.
    8. Micro Machines – Terrific graphics, especially for being unlicensed.
    9. Super Mario Bros. 2 – Always enjoyed being able to select different characters.
    10. Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode – Nintendo game with sex, c’mon.

  • Aaron1375

    August 16, 2012 at 7:07 pm

Harder to make an NES list cause there are so many good games. But James, no Castlevania? That blows my mind, you made a whole three angry nerd episodes on that series of games that includes 3 NES games. I find it interesting you like Super Contra more than the first one too. That Super C was a hard one, the code only gave you 10 men instead of 30 and most of the time that wasn’t enough for me.

  • Keith the Genesis Geek

    August 16, 2012 at 7:14 pm

I can see why James didn’t include Castlevania. I think it’s because Castlevania IV is his favorite of the series. All those games on his list are hard to top.

  • Talladega Knight

    August 16, 2012 at 7:34 pm

    In no particular order:

    1. tecmo super bowl
    2. super mario bros 2
    3. super mario bros 3
    4. mike tyson’s punchout
    5. little league baseball
    6. super dodgeball
    7. the legend of zelda
    8. super c
    9. tmnt 2: the arcade game
    10. metroid

  • The Utility Man

    August 16, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Something I did forget to ask after seeing your list.

Since you seem to be so fond of the Contra series, especially seeing Contra and Super C on your top 10 list, what do you think of Contra Force?

  • smd

    August 16, 2012 at 7:38 pm

The site has a bad spam filter (according to Mike). It blocked one of my comments and when I tried to repost it, it said I already submitted that comment. Lame!

PS Mike Tyson’s FTW. I much prefer that to the lame re-release.

  • AbsoluteDeicide

    August 16, 2012 at 7:59 pm

Super C over the original Contra, eh? Contra’s my favorite game of all time. I liked Super C, but the top down levels pissed me off. So did Metroid in general. I like the rest of the list, though.

  • Historic 66

    August 16, 2012 at 8:07 pm

Great list! LoZ, Mario Bros. 3, and Metroid would be in my top five.

  • Kenshiroh

    August 16, 2012 at 8:19 pm

My favorite was Kirby’s Dream Land.

  • J.J. McSandfarm

    August 16, 2012 at 8:25 pm

Super C was great, but the best? It was just a not-quite-there version of Contra. I assume you must have memories of playing it that transcend the game, and that’s acceptable. This list probably wasn’t meant to be universal or unbiased. But still…I was so into Contra when I was a kid I could one life the dang thing, and I remember finding Super C somewhat lackluster. The music was great, and the graphics colorful, I do admit.

I wish I’d lived in your neighborhood back then, I was in need of allies who were on the Nintendo side.

  • dazzsheil

    August 16, 2012 at 8:46 pm

Yikes, I’m surprised to see Super C above Zelda!

  • DavidARice

    August 16, 2012 at 9:19 pm

Nice List James. I my fave is Super Mario Bros 3.

  • August 16, 2012 at 9:30 pm

Man I’m pretty shocked castlevania isnt on this list, I’m guessing it’s #11. Personally I loved Mario 3, double dragon, and dodgeball.

  • megavolt67

    August 16, 2012 at 9:36 pm

    What, no Ghostbusters?

Like DavidARice, SMB3 is my fave, and I think it’s the best. The best NES game and the best Mario game. After that I’d have Castlevania III, Bionic Commando, and then maybe some of the other obvious favorites.

  • zUkUu

    August 16, 2012 at 10:14 pm

Kirby is missing for me. Robin Hood was also great (tho, hard as hell – you should review it!). I also liked Turtles 3.

  • rschott

    August 16, 2012 at 10:18 pm

I didn’t have a horse in the Atari 2600 race, because I was too young to play it, but I was a NES kid through and through. Here’s my list. When I was making this list, I started with some really unique/obscure titles, but it’s funny how the true classics always end up at the top of everyone’s list. I want to see Mike’s list!

    10. Lolo
    9. Power Blade
    8. Crystalis
    7. River City Ransom
    6. Mike Tyson’s Punch Out
    5. Zelda
    4. Castlevania
    3. Contra
    2. Mega Man 2
    1. Super Mario Bros 3

  • ZeroVector

    7. Crystalis
    6. Zelda 1/2

    4. Dragon Warrior 1-4
    3. Megaman 2 (and 1,3,4 but 2 is best)
    2. Final Fantasy
    1. Ultima IV

    Yeah my list is RPG-heavy.

  • culwin

    August 16, 2012 at 11:25 pm

    Kid Icarus
    Blaster Master
    Super Mario 1-3

    Duck Tales
    Tetris (Tengen)
and probably some more I can’t think of right now…

Wow. Kinda shocked seeing Super C up there at #1. Solid list thru and thru. I would gladly play any of those games ^_^!

  • johnmorisi

    August 17, 2012 at 12:36 am

YES! thats awesome, Super C is my #2. Maybe it was cause I played Super C before Contra, or maybe its just cause I felt that it was a bit easier and more playable, or maybe its cause i hated those 3Dish levels in Contra, and loved the top down ones… but Super C is such a great game. I remember me and my friend played through it a good 5 times in a row without running out of continues. I can play that for hours.

    1. Zelda II
    2. Super C
    3. Super Mario 3
    4. Crash At Demonhead
    5. Super Mario Bros
    6. Willow

  • Nerdator

    August 17, 2012 at 7:44 am

Yeah, Super C is superior to Contra in everything, but the top-down levels. The third-person views of the ‘Base’ levels in Contra were so much better.

  • dragontamer272

    August 17, 2012 at 7:52 am

super C has crisper graphics than contra. the gameplay feels a bit tighter but those overhead levels put some people off.

no driving games like rc pro am, rad racer, on there. same with shmups! ya didn’t like life force or gradius or the slew of others?

  • Aaron1375

    August 17, 2012 at 6:29 pm

@rschott : I love that you have Crystalis in your list. I loved that game as a kid, it was like Zelda with more RPG elements.

@mike: I couldn’t make a top ten either, I think I have something set then I see a game and I am like, “Oh yeah, that one was awesome too!”

  • Aaron1375

    August 17, 2012 at 6:41 pm

I am going to just list ten Nintendo games I like. I think that would be easier than trying to rank them:

    The Legend of Zelda
    Super Mario Bros 2
    Final Fantasy
    Mega Man II
    Bionic Commando

Just ten games I really enjoyed on the NES, in no particular order.

  • August 17, 2012 at 8:57 pm

    Super Mario Bros 1/2/3
    Super C
    Castlevania I/III

  • Zihq

    August 18, 2012 at 5:37 am

Great choices. I would’ve expected Castlevania 3 there, but I guess the frustration factor puts it down a little. Wouldn’t actually be on my list either. I’d just put Mega Man 2 at number 1 (I just LOVE that game to death) and replace punch-out with Batman, and the list would look pretty much perfect to me. Maybe Ninja Gaiden over Metroid as well.. hard choice.

  • adam.russo11

Who loves the transition of Double Dragon II to Double Dragon III eh? XD

  • Sarabeam

    August 18, 2012 at 7:44 pm

I never had an Atari 2600 and I was lucky to have an NES, personally I really grew up in the super nintendo era, but I had a few NES games and I remember them lovingly, there’s not enough to make a top 10 list, but in order of favorites:

    1. Zelda II Adventure of Link (hard as hell… but it felt like such an epic adventure even though I couldn’t complete it)
    2 Super Mario brothers 3
    3 The Legend of Zelda
    4 Super Mario Brothers
    5 Mario II
🙁 that’s all I can think of. I really missed out on a lot of classics. But I’m glad I got to play the original Zelda and Mario games. Castlevania is something I discovered later in life, and backtracked but I haven’t gotten as far as the NES castlevania games yet. I’m dying to play 3 and 4, especially after watching the AVGN episodes about castlevania.

Like others here, I am surprised you don’t have any Castlevania games on your list, James. Maybe you just found them to be too frustrating to make it on your top 10? One game on the NES that is one of my favorite games of all time, but a lot of people seem to overlook it is Blaster Master.

Here’s my top 10 NES games:

    1. Metroid
    2. Super Mario Bros. 3
    3. Blaster Master
    4. Mega Man 3
    5. The Legend of Zelda
    6. Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!
    7. TMNT II: The Arcade Game
    9. Super C

I’d be interested to hear (especially from the Cinemassacre team) what they believe to be the most overrated and underrated NES games. For me, the most overrated NES games have to be the Mega Man games – I just couldn’t get into them for some reason. As for most underrated, I’d have to go with Willow.

LOVE Mike Tyson’s Punch Out, still fun to play today. And yes, Double Dragon 2, I totally agree had the best storyline of the 3 Nintendo ports and cool cutscenes and was the only one with gameplay that wasn’t so unfairly difficult, unlike the first and third games. At least with DD 2, you could continue right from where you left off and with more lives from the beginning. I hated in the first game that you had to start over from an earlier point if you lost a life, like in Ninja Gaiden. If they could do it for the second game, why not let you continue from where you left off in the other 2? Assholes.

That’s quite the list of top NES games, James :). Thank you for sharing it with us, man! I’m sure that most people would love to see you post a video of this list some day, with your reasons as to why you picked those ten particular games over the rest.

As other people have previously noted, I’m also surprised to see Super C topping off your list!

I played it before Contra and also loved it, despite the one hit deaths haha! It would definitely be among my top 10 favorite 2P NES games, but would miss making my overall Top 10 list, especially because of that lame ass final boss battle! What is this f’n statue head business?!

Anyway, I’m glad that you also appreciate Punch Out, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! that is (thank you for clearing that up)! Mr. Dream’s a fool, as we all know! All that he ever did was beat Glass Joe 99 times! Anyone can do that!

Now, as difficult as this is going to be, I will attempt to make my own Top 10 favorite NES games list. Well, here goes nothing:

    1.Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!
Yeah, my nickname probably gave it away haha :). I played this game SO much as an adult, but I never got to play it as a kid, unfortunately. Tons of replay value to be found here, as the player can best his or her fastest victory times and such.

I have the Mike Tyson Pass Key memorized like my phone number and have beaten him in pretty much every possible way. The Dream Fight got so easy at one point, that I desperately tried to find ways of making this game challenging again.

As fate would have it, one day I randomly typed in letters using a Game Genie and created a ridiculous code (YATZEY) that turns off the lights, so that the game becomes Mike Tyson’s Black-Out!! J. Most of the opponents (especially the later ones) can only be seen when using their special punch, but some can’t even be seen at all, no joke, try it out for yourselves!

Even Black-Out!! mode (once completed) couldn’t stop me from playing this again game from time to time, it’s just so damn awesome!

The character animations are epic looking for a 1987 game and the music also really sets the tone (although, it ain’t no Rocky-the movies of course, not that Sega Master System game).

Bottom line is: Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! takes a bite out of the competition just like Mike!

    I’ll be back!

    2.P.O.W. Prisoners of War
Way better than the original arcade version, despite the lack of a 2P co-op mode! It added boss battles and weapon upgrade rooms, along with different settings. This game had such a profound impact on me as a kid that I actually dressed up as its hero, only known by the code name of Bart, for Halloween. No one at school knew who the hell I was supposed to be, but I felt every bit as bad ass either way haha J.

This one really got me into the Wolverine character. A fun platformer that is pretty easy to get into, despite the flack that it often gets. SNIKT me!

    4.Friday the 13th
Although very confusing at first, this game can be very rewarding if given a chance. An adventure game mixed in with RPG elements that actually got me to watch the movies! I love how Jason’s mommy is brought back to life…this game is LJNdary, especially the ending!

    5.Ninja Gaiden
While the game itself is poorly programmed at times (re-spawning enemies like with those killer birds), the music and cinematic sequences are truly spectacular, especially for a 1988/1989 game! This is the game that really got me into ninjas as a kid J.

    6.Double Dragon
Just love the kick ass music in this one, along with the fact that you have to earn the special moves! That knee/shoulder toss attack still holds up to this day. I enjoyed this game a lot more than the arcade version, which I found to be far too slow paced.

It’s thanks to this game that I tried jumping off of walls as a kid and failed pretty miserably hahaha :). However, this is seriously one of the greatest movie based video games ever made, because it’s BATMAN! Oh and this game taught me that the Joker is actually the son of Zeus, no joke! Get to the final battle and see for yourself!

8.Ninja Gaiden III The Ancient Ship of Doom
Very well balanced game overall (no more re-spawning enemies: Hell Yeah!), nice flow, sweet Strider-like sword upgrade, awesome music, a lot easier to get into compared to the first two, despite what most people say. The plot isn’t the greatest though.

    9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Yes, your eyes are NOT deceiving you, I actually love this game! The fact that the player can switch between all four of our favorite heroes in a half shell during the same play through, gives it added turtle power, dude!

The music is also very memorable and the gameplay is extremely different from any other TMNT related game. It actually has a lot of variety, like swimming and getting to drive around in the Party Wagon/Turtlevan! Don’t get me wrong, some of the Turtles’ beat ’em up games are great, but others tend to get WAY too repetitive.

There is only one thing that bothers me about this game though and that is the excessive amount of slowdown whenever there are a bunch of enemies on the screen, major bummer! But other than that, this game is awesome, cowabunga!

    I’ll be back!

10.Street Fighter 2010 The Final Fight
I used to watch my friend Phil get all the way up to the final planet in this game, only to give up, but the game had already made a lasting impression on me.

While it has no real connection to the Street Fighter franchise and feels more like a Mega Man wannabe, the gameplay can be truly fantastic once Ken masters all of the moves at his disposal (not very many, but they can be deadly!).

For instance, I like how the player becomes temporarily invincible when using the back flip. The game becomes SO much easier with this move!

What truly stands out about 2010 is its cyber punk futuristic feel and oustanding music. Highly underrated because of its name and the expectations that come along with it!
