    July 23, 2012 at 9:50 pm

    Okay. This was okay.

    It’s not your best or worst work. I am now going to do a more in-depth critique;

Mostly, my point is, your experience working on the film shows. The filmography is more complex and appealing, despite the constraints of the show (especially the spit-take,) your acting is better, and your jokes have better timing, though in this case I didn’t feel it brought much to the quality; it just made it feel like I was watching a more refined episode. The episode even has a bit of a plot with you trying to find a good Schwarzenegger game..

Ultimately, this doesn’t feel like your best work, but it definitely feels like your most polished episode yet.

So the way I see it: you’re not back in the groove yet, but you definitely seem to have picked up some new skill from your recent film. I am eager to see what you have for the future episodes. Especially if you do something with more personal feelings like the Castlevania videos.

    Two questions:

    1) Are these going to be monthly again now or just at your leisure?
    2) I noticed this is already up on Youtube, as opposed to in a year from now. Has your relationship with GT/SA changed?

Still, it’s great to see a new one of these. Good luck with the rest of the moviemaking process!

  • July 23, 2012 at 10:02 pm

  • July 23, 2012 at 10:06 pm

I think I was too young when I played Total Recall, since I always kind of liked the game as a kid. I don’t think I’ve played any of the other games though. The Predator game looks ridiculous, lol.

  • Despair4Ever

    July 23, 2012 at 10:07 pm

I had strange feelings of the new episode at first, but as soon as James in a strange way says “what a shitload of fuck, what were they thinking” and it doesn’t sound like a question, I was laughing my ass off.

Especially because I grew up and own all those games, Total Recall tortured me and my friends growing up. I broke tons of controls as a kid and these games (except Commando, always like it) were all part of it.

  • eightytwo

    July 23, 2012 at 10:07 pm

    Thank you, James. Loved it.

I couldn’t help but feel some of the acted frustration and tension was a bit more genuine in this one. Maybe a side effect of the busy year?

    July 23, 2012 at 10:20 pm

I’m glad that you’re back James and decided to review the rest of the Arnold Schwarzenegger games, this is fantastic!

As a big Arnie fan mysefl, I finished all of these games, except for Conan, since it isn’t based on the movies as you mentioned :).

Predator is my favorite Schwarzenegger movie, but the game should have been terminated!

As a teenager I was hoping that Commando would be based on the movie, but was devastated to find out that it wasn’t…Maybe that was for the best though!

Anyway, keep the reviews coming, man, we were starting to worry that you wouldn’t be back!

Be seeing you real soon at A & C Games and Con Bravo, should be fun!

  • chriswhetsell

    July 23, 2012 at 10:21 pm

What a way to make a comeback! Brining out the Arnie games! It’s only fitting. I enjoyed the callbacks to previous episodes, Kyle Justin’s skeleton haha… and the hilarious angry outbursts… trademark AVGN. Good job man! I always enjoy your stuff.

  • devorange

    July 23, 2012 at 10:21 pm

Hell yes, man! Never been so excited to see an AVGN episode. And what a comeback it was!

You’re the best. Great to see you back, AVGNerd. Loved the video, loved the topic as well. A lot of the camera work in the live action segments looked more refined in this vid, looks like the movie has been a great learning experience.

Keep up the great work. Good luck working on the movie, we’re all looking forward to it.

Encourage Mike to keep up the good work on his videos as well. The content the two of you create has made Cinemassacre worth a daily visit. I hope your page views reflect it. Mrs. AVGNerd’s content has been very interesting as well.

I love this episode! James I love your stuff it makes me laugh like crazy! I was very excited for this episode and you didn’t disappoint. The first thing to note was the music was epic and exciting(but I do miss your normal thyme song). The acting has gotten much better (although I really enjoy the corny acting from your previous videos much more). The voice overs are excellent and you did a much better job acting them out (however I’m sure you have new equipment and until you get better at adjusting the sound levels its a little obvious at times). Your writing has improved and the length of this video was epic (i don’t remember a 22 min AVGN video) however your cursing has gone from comical and slap happy to angry and a bit tormented. I know its hard to stay fresh and your probably in the stage of your career that your acting has gone to the next level and your material is lacking but don’t lose touch with the online AVGN. Overall though I thought the production quality was vastly improved and I can definitely see how much you have learned sense your last video, but deviate to far from what makes you so beloved by all of your fans. I love your videos and I am excited to see whats next! Thank you James your hard work brings smiles to the faces of many people!

I think this is probably the best ep yet to introduce new people to AVGN. It’s got terrible games, catch-phrases, swearing fits and nostalgic stories of gaming disappointment. Quintessential Nerd.

Ok now, post view review. First: seemed rushed but I am sure it was,as well as you probly did not have as much time to work on just the ep wile working on the movie. Second: the topic was great, I was really drawn in. You still got it. Third: its a AVGN ep and you gave the fans everything we have come to expect. Now that you have the first one out of the way you can relax, and take your time on the next one. Im looking foward to it, but take your time

    awesome episode. glad your back.

    honest review of the episode…

    The intro music was awesome.
The script and cinematography for the the introduction explaining the story for you playing the games is one of the best game review setups you have done in any episode. i loved how you set up the camera and moved around the game shelf. the commentary is very well done for the majority of the review but some of the lines and jokes had been done before and at times felt short or were forced but this was rare and more towards the end of the video. if you would have cut down on some of these it would have been a lot more tightly woven together. overall the commentary was excellent and the style of this review is effective. the ending was sort of anticlimactic but given the source material you had to work with was still good but a little overdone.

overall very entertaining and some great moments but there were a few moments where it could have been better or edited out.

Thanks for making a really good episode. Hope to see more soon and more information about the progress of the movie.

Alright! Back in form! Nice to see. So not only is Arnold back in the acting business, but there’s also a remake of total recall. Talk about killing two birds with one stone. I’m honestly trying to remember any good Arnold games back in them good old days, and it’s just not coming up. Oh well. Awesome review! A year was worth the wait, now I’m ready for the AVGN movie! Definitely buying it the day it comes out. Any way I can preorder it?

  • Dirty Jared

    July 24, 2012 at 12:41 am

Great review! I’ve been waiting for you to do Total Recall so all the other shitty games you squeezed in were like a sweet bonus!! I absolutely love the childhood memories of renting Total Recall in the beginning, as a child I rented so many bad NES games based off of kickass coverart *cough deadly towers cough*

  • Rotocko

    July 24, 2012 at 12:52 am

Awesome episode! Predator was one of the first NES games I owned. It was one of those,” Oh it’s Predator, it’s gotta be awesome! So it will get it even without playing it beforehand” It sucked and made me so confused. What the hell were all those crazy creatures flying around all over the place? Why did some levels feel like I was in the xenomorph’s lair? Truly a shitty game, and you hit it right on the head AVGN. You and Mike rule, keep doing what you’re doing.

  • You Can Just Walk Over It

    July 24, 2012 at 12:54 am

Okay I watched this a few times and I just now noticed the “sasquatch dead fucking serious” series of lines was a set of callbacks to older AVGN episodes, namely the second episode with the first instance of “dead fucking serious” and the zoom in on the eyes. So genius, and so funny.

I’ll be honest and say the set up for going completely angry at the end with pushing start instead of continue on accident wasn’t as rage convincing as say, the back to the future super famicom game revelation or even the dark castle whipping end, but it was still enjoyable.

Is mike completely done with title cards? Those are always enjoyable and appreciated, so if mike is considering doing them, the fans definitely want to see more!

  • Stylix

    July 24, 2012 at 12:56 am

I never understood why no one could ever make a decent game based off a movie back in the 8-bit days. I was burned so many times from giving them the benefit of the doubt that to this day I have a major aversion to giving any movie based game a chance.

  • tjpsycho

    July 24, 2012 at 1:04 am

  • July 24, 2012 at 1:08 am

Great to have you back James, and with a great episode. Its always a good day when a new AVGN is made.

About the episode, even when I knew that this was 8 bit games, I hoped that you get into True Lies for Snes, that is a good Arnold movie licensed game, I still donΒ΄t know how they managed to do such thing, and It was from Ocean, a pretty lame company back in the 16 bit era

  • novastar06

    July 24, 2012 at 1:15 am

Hilarious, the part where you hit “Start” accidentally legitimately had me suck in my breath and hold it, because I found it seriously suspenseful as to what was going to happen next – and you did not disappoint.
And was that Kyle Justin’s skeleton back there? Unexpected and also hilarious – and an ominous sign from the events of the movie?….

  • novastar06

    July 24, 2012 at 1:20 am

Oh yeah, and the part where the guys were flying off of the screen was funny as hell too, that classic expression you had makes me laugh every time I see it in one of the episodes, like in Little Red Hood and Star Wars when the life bar is huge

  • bloodheap

    July 24, 2012 at 1:23 am

While it might not count since it is an SNES game, True Lies is actually a decent scwarzenegger game and believe it or not it was made by LJN.

Great episode, made me laugh so hard! The scene when you are taking a sip of beer while the game switches to “big mode” is invaluable!
Great number of cross-references to other AVGN episodes, too. Enjoyed this one very much!

And, of course, it’s really nice just to see another AVGN episode, especially after the time you have been working on the movie. Looking forward to seeing that! Keep up the good work!

hey james,i dont mean to be a asholian from the planet asshole! (classic!) But i mean you kinda have old material… We are alll glad to see the nerd back to his nerdy self but you know what this episode didnt make me laugh the way the older episodes did, that would be due to the fact that the yelling ASS! and FUCK! was completly funny but now its a little over done… i mean i could even see it in yur face when you recited what you usually say “what were they thinking?!!!” but you did it so half hartedly like you knew it was old… i mean im no better than anybody here but i think it was just some food for thought. Im still looking forward to the movie but i think you rushed to force this video out. its ok james take your time we can wait what you put out is GOLD!

Not a bad basic episode to get back into the swing of things! I’m curious though, is that it for GameTrailers? Are new Eps just going to be on YouTube?

Also is Kyle Justin dead in the Nerd universe now? Just curious.

The best nerd video in a few years, by a long shot! have been following since ’07 so to hear some classic nerd jokes and references is a treat!.. people have commented against, but I think not having a title card for this one worked well, the introduction suited the whole ‘movie’ subject focus of the review and it was good to see Rolling Rock back on the scene!

    Refreshing! Good job!

Liked the review but for me it had the same problem that the spiel burg games had it was a bit to long. The reviews of each games where good and I understand that one game may not have enough material for one review. But the Halloween review had multiple games in them with the focus mainly on Halloween and a Short look at some other games and there flaws. But than again this is just one man’s opinion and like I said I liked the review and some parts made me laugh out loud.

  • Mykael

    July 24, 2012 at 6:38 am

A word of advice: There were way too many live-action segments. I know your thing is making live-action content, but there’s just too much here, and most if it is unnecessary. A lot of things could be said while still playing game footage, instead of breaking up the flow. For example, with the glory hole part, you could just say “what are those, glory holes?” and maybe you’d zoom in on them, but instead, you make a 20 second segment of the Nerd going “Yep…they’re like..uh…glory holes…yeah.”

For me, an example of a perfect episode is Street Fighter 2010. It’s got a decent length, although maybe too short, it’s got live-action stuff combined with special effects, it only has one game but it talks about a lot of other games related to it (I really appreciate when there’s back story and trivia in the video), and it’s just great.

Great video, James, one of the funnier ones you’ve put out recently. It’s obvious you’ve honed both your acting and directing chops working on the movie – it really shows in the quality of the live action shots here. Looking forward to seeing what you do in the future.

Good job James, glad your back to the grind! But…. the Kyle skeleton. I hope that does not mean he is “done” with AVGN. I am sure it was just meant as a kind of joke, but it worries me because Kyle is a big part of the AVGN. If he is still around, you should have him cameo in the next episode, maybe as a Zombie Kyle. You havent done a zombie themed AVGN yet.

    July 24, 2012 at 3:17 pm

Glad to see you back with your nerd costume on, James! This episode stands out a bit from the others in terms of shooting and acting, and even ambience, but in a good way. I can’t tell why exactly, but it felt more “fresh”. You’re getting better. Looking forward to seeing more.

Try to stay reasonable however, you’ve got a movie to work on and I’m sure (read: I hope) fans can understand that. Don’t feel obliged to make new episodes while you’ve got more important stuff to do, if that’s how you feel, of course. It’s always good to see more of your work, though. It’s up to you!

  • July 24, 2012 at 3:24 pm

    A great episode =D
The opening was well done, giving you an epic “Yeah, he’s back!” feeling.
The foreshadowing was also a nice part. I appreciate that you even went to an entire category of games for your ‘return’. Playing one game for the sake of the review is taking enough time, but a bunch of them?
Also, you’ve left me with a very conflicted feeling regarding the scene at 20:43. On one hand I fully understand the “why did this happen” of the moment and laughed at the great idea. On the other hand part of me screams “No!” and is terrified.
Well, the Nerd came back from hell once, maybe “guitar guy” can do something similar.
In any case, I did not see that coming and applaud you for you ingenuity.
    Thank you =D

Great episode, James. I especially like the photo, the calm intro was awesome.

As for the games, well… they suck. Though in comparison with the other games you reviewed, the Total Recall game appears at least playable. Anyway, how come you chose only NES-games, there’s a whole bunch of Schwarzenegger games for other consoles as well. For example, Predator (not Predator: Soon the Hunt Will Begin which you reviewed) for Amiga or Commodore 64. Ah well, still a great episode. Keep up the good work.

HD quality, nice picture, but womehow it was not as good as the classic Nerd. Too overacted or maybe not naturally enough as it was before. It’s a pity the series seem to start degrading. Come on, James, get back to the roots! To the inner freedom, wilderness, spirit, experiment. And to the main thing: passion! Have you lost it already? Please, try to resurrect it again!

  • NightOfTheLiving8Bit

    July 24, 2012 at 5:45 pm

This may be one of your best episodes yet my friend, between all the subtle hints at “ET” in there, all of the things you put in that only old fans would see and actually understand (such as, Kyle’s skeleton and guitar) etc.
Also, some of the best one liners that have come from you since the early days when you were starting to make a name for yourself.
And a fine display in using previous famous one liners too.

All of this tied together gives me good feelings about the movie as I was first weary about a screenplay with other actors and (what I think) little narrative.
But after seeing how this came out, what you brought to the episode and the quality (the voice audio could use some higher mid’s, it seems too muffled) I am honestly super excited for you and everyone else involved in the movie!
Try to keep up the monthly or bi-monthly episodes if you can while finishing the movie! It’s really going to help keep interest in the AVGN name this way!

The Conan game isn’t original a Conan game. I notice you have a couple of C64s. Load up System 3’s game ‘Myth: History in the Making’. It was a pretty cool game in its day but I don’t remember it playing as weirdly or getting stuck at the beginning. The final stage is a space shooter!

What ‘Conan’ is a reskin of:

  • LordPindar

    July 24, 2012 at 6:14 pm

Nice one. The predator game is totally AVGN material, and the joke about sissy things like bubbles being fatal to ultra-manly men like Arnold was hilarious. Like a lot of people I’ve noticed that you’ve taken advantage of the new, movie tested camera in this episode, and allso the acting skills you’ve aquired by hanging out with other actors on your movie are visible here. All those things are plusses of course, but I would still like to point out, and other fans may or may not agree with me, that the distinct, campy, home made video look was always an integral part of the AVGN series, and I wouldn’t like to see that dissapear, especially when conciously achieving that takes a lot of directing skill. Doing it with a cheap camera is one thing, but if you can manage to deliberately achieve that feel, even with all these new means at your disposal, than I think you can truly develop it into a very distinct, original and personal stile of filmmaking

Those glory hole punching penises were odd now that you mention it XD

Welcome Back James! Just wanted to say i’m a huge fan of your work. The new episode has a different look to it (which i think is great) and a different feel also… which to me kind of started off slow but seemed to get better throughout. (i was lmao by the end of it!) Anyway thanks for another fantastic episode and can’t wait for more!!

That was awesome! I’m glad you finally did a review of Predator. I think in some previous forum I had suggested that crap-tastic game with the pay-off of the final boss being a giant predator head! WTF!

Out of all the Arnold games you reviewed I think it may have been the least shitty since I did actually make it through it despite my frustration level with it. The others I couldn’t stand enough to bother making it through, and I think its only because Predator was just that good of a movie I kept hoping it would get better….haha I was soooo wrong!

Thanks again for another awesome video!!!

That was awesome, I actually wrote James and suggested Total Recall, Predator and The Last Action Hero to be reviewed in a kind of Schwarzenegger games AVGN. Do not know if he took my advice or if it just came thanks to Arnold’s return to film, but it is still cool to see the games I suggested used. Funny episode too, lot’s of games and he played the hell out of Predator. I couldn’t win that one, got close but I hit the damn start instead of continue after a couple of times getting killed by the flying mask and my reaction was similar.

  • liononzion

    July 25, 2012 at 4:10 am

bit off topic but u know what shwartzanagger movie pisses me off? the 6th day. so he hates clones and destroys the lab that basically gives us immortality and kills the creators clone calling it an abomination but then he gets to keep his clone who (here comes the real bullshit) who goes sailing at the end like nothing ever happened.

Fuck you Arnold, u get a copy of yourself at the price of our immortality. Thats 1 movie where I really wanted the bad guy to win. Worst Plot EVER!

  • Santa Horse

    July 25, 2012 at 4:31 am

liononzion – The whole film was a succession of missed opportunities and failures. Some of the ideas are mind-blowing, but are executed really badly.

For example, the doctor behind the research (Dr Weir) realises he can no longer justify working for the antagonist (Drucker), especially after finding out through his wife’s clone dying of an illness that is hereditary and kills people as children that Drucker has been putting these diseases into clients as insurance to kill them every five years so they can’t ‘screw him over. That’s a great concept. Then, after the doctor says he’s leaving and his wife has chosen not to be resurrected, Drucker tells him that he’s about to kill him and create clones of both him and his wife from before he found out about the deception, thus basically turning them into slaves – a fate that some would argue is worse than pure death, and certainly great ammunition for an excellent philosophical turning point in the film.

Sadly, Drucker proceeds to kill Dr Weir, and he’s never mentioned or seen ever again. Epic fail doesn’t even begin to describe how much they dropped the ball on that.

Also, just the fact that it’s Arnold in the main role is really distracting. Maybe if they’d got Bruce Willis it would have been a little better since he’s a better actor, but it just seemed out of place to have such a goofy performance in a story with such concepts. It’s not like Arnold hasn’t been in films with strong philosophical messages before – Total Recall, The Terminator, and (to a lesser extent) The Running Man all had them, and he was fine in those – so it’s really annoying that they basically cast him as a comic character with occasional dramatic scenes in this when it should have been the other way around.

Finally, I really don’t think we should have had the scenes where Adam Gibson 1 is talking to Adam Gibson 2. Not only were the scenes themselves really weird, but later in the film Drucker looks at the visual memories of one Gibson (who’s just been revealed as the clone when he and the audience thought he was the original) and realises that he tricked his own memory by having his clone sit behind him in the helicopter so it would look like only one arrived, then we see the real Gibson fighting his way through the building. Wouldn’t that reveal have been much more exciting and surprising if we didn’t already know that they’d met?

Bottom line – great idea, very poor execution.

Awww yeah, it’s great to see a new ep of AVGN! I’ve was just telling my friend the other day that I hope a new one gets posted soon. As usual this was a great video James. Nice to have you back man. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go watch Predator on Blu-Ray.

  • Snake4985

    July 25, 2012 at 8:05 am

I have that Conan game. Apparently, it’s a remake of an older Amiga and C64 game called Myth: History in the Making that had nothing to do with Conan.

BTW Red-Right-Hand: Hope it’s the original Blu-Ray. The Ultimate Hunter Edition sucks. There’s an overuse of DNR on it, making it look digital and fake.

Before I say what I wanted to say, I will inform you that I really did enjoy this episode.

I just felt that the anger was a little bit forced here. It felt like the Nerd was rather mellow, and just a little sad. Perhaps whatever has happened in the movie broke him? I don’t know.

Like I said, I did enjoy this episode, but that and something just felt a little off. I guess you need a little more time to get back into the swing of things now that you are back to updating? Anyway, looking forward to more from you~

like seinfeld and friends, and one actor named shahrukh khan, i have heard one thing. in every episode, jerry and kramer left a piece of them behind. when you leave enough pieces behind, there is nothing left to give anymore. people are telling me this is the danger james is running into. his character is being played to the point of exhaustion and needs either retiring or sprucing up to keep it fresh. i just think james is under wayyy too much stress and pressure to do the movie as well as do episodes and then live his personal life. nothing to do with the nerd himself here folks. just a lot of deadlines and something has to give. let’s enjoy this episode!

A very intresting review about these games. I actually played total recall grwoing up and i could never get past this one area with a guy that keeps throwing his hat at you. Very anoying!! lol

I look forward to seeing more reviews from you in the future. One game series i truly hope you do some time is Wizards and Warriors series.
I was a big fan of them and its a series that sadly doesn’t get enough praise. ( good or bad ofcourse )

Thanks again for this video and keep up the great work!

James’ acting has gotten to be so natural and effortless. Maybe it helps to play the same character over and over again but still, it’s nice to see the Nerd-antics becoming less and less forced.

This episode was good. Some moments fell flat (“this game’s mom”?) but there were many laughs to be had. A welcome comeback!

Glad to know of at least one other gamer that owns those How To Win At Nintendo Games books. Not only is this appropriate because Arnold is in Expendables 2, but there’s also a Total Recall remake out now in July 2012, when this video was originally posted. Nice tease for the upcoming Nerd movie, showing the E.T. title screen from Atari 2600. I can’t wait to see how the gameplay goes in that movie. “Sucks duck cunt” has to be my favorite line of this episode. Another enjoyable installment.

WOOHOO new AVGN! Funny vid, thumbs up.

  • July 25, 2012 at 11:28 pm

I really want to see an episode where The AVGN plays a really awful video game themed board game against Board James. You could easily do this by filming yourself, then later filming the AVGN. You can just keep switching shots, though I’m sure you know this. So why am I typing all this up?

  • July 25, 2012 at 11:29 pm

Sometimes I wonder if James is the character and the AVGN is the REAL person.

I have, unfortunately, played all of those games many moons ago when I was a wee lad. Many lost hours of my childhood for those crappy games. It’s so funny that I remember all of those little moments of frustration in those same exact places in the games, and as a child wondering, what the hell is going on? Do I just suck? No! The game sucks!! Finally after all these years, redemption!

  • LiimatainenGR

    July 26, 2012 at 11:13 am

Dear James… since you love so much torturing yourself with all these unspeakable games and gimmicks, i strongly suggest you consider doing a worst-of-Genesis/ Mega Drive review using the… Sega Activator! Yes, the only thing that can make Power Glove look like penicillin in front of flu. I beg you, put your devotion to Nintendo aside for a while, and grace us with what could be the top moment in AVGN’s history!

Anyway, great episode. That Predator game looks really annoying. Jeez. I like how when you beat it and it says you survive and you say “Yeah, barely” and throw the controller down. Nice and simple. πŸ™‚

Conan game looked awful, as did the Last Action Hero game. Total Recall didn’t look too bad, though.

  • July 26, 2012 at 12:57 pm

I’ve been pondering for a while what exactly was it that was missing from this show–and after watching classic AVGN on my TV thanks to your DVD collection–I finally figured out what that missing part was. It’s Mike’s title cards. I know he explained a while back as to why he decided to stop doing them, but in all honesty it does leave the show a little lacking at the beginning. Seeing Mike’s cards always made me feel fully engulfed in the entertainment of each episode. Sometimes I’d pause the video and methodically study the title card. I’d study the details and find a really deep appreciation for Mike’s work. I think that without Mike’s title cards the show just doesn’t feel the same as it once did. I hope that Mike will take to heart what I am saying and start doing title cards for the show again. I really do miss his amazing artwork.

its awesome to have you back James i have been missing the reviews and cant wait for more. the only reviews I’ve been watching are the ones that Mike has been making in your absence. there pretty good and you should give him some praise. But i have noticed in this video that the nerd is getting more theatrical in his reviews. that is understandable of course you must always strive higher to become better at what you do. im not saying that i don’t like the new twist to the videos, but the way you did it before you started your movie had a more intense feeling to it which i loved. im sure people will disagree with me. but a little criticism dosent hurt. but i do have to say: WELCOME BACK NERD

Up as jump, like in Conan, is typically a staple of old computer games. It’s possible Mindscape, at the time, had very little experience with the NES hardware and fell back on some computer programming habits. I know there was a later Conan game on DOS and Commodore Amiga that I had (on Amiga primarily) where Up was jump… again… and it wasn’t a very easy game… and it was also cryptic. Okay, I’m starting to see the pattern here.

Yes indeed, nice to have the nerd back. And I have to say, you can definitely feel the refinement, the new level of sophistication this review has. I’m pretty new to the nerd reviews ( 4 or 5 months ago I discovered him by accidental web exploration ) and after that I spent a couple of days watching every episode. Needless to say I laughed my ass off. The nostalgic factor of these reviews makes them much more than just funny, goofy, short films though and as a old nostalgic gamer I thank you.

Now the episode, seeing the nerd transformation from happy nerd to angry nerd is quite fun but the happy nerd was to close to the James Rolfe from the movies reviews and was a mixed feeling.

Okay…so heres the deal. I realize that my dependacy on seeing your videos is purely the workings of an AVGN addict. However, my inner child wanted to throw a tantrum and and behave very inappropriately. He wanted to pretend it was the nerds failing. The nerd had failed him and just was no longer there for him…and he wanted payback…in at least the form of some cross words. I elected to say things like ‘fuck’ and…and…”double fuck”…and then finally….”Google fuck”…cause I was just running out of time.

But now we have today….a glorious day…it is friday…I come home…pop open an IPA beer and see that…holy mother friggin shits…IT IS AN OFFICIAL AVGN.!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Nerd, come on. After first time viewing this review i touched conan, and its not that bad. Of course hit detection not that good, but come on. Wanna something with really awful hit detection – try Blade warrior from Amiga – that one sucked ass at hit detection. But I digress. Controls are somewhat good- they just picked one from many options for jump to keep 2 different attacks.
Basically – you can even jump-kick (like third attack) with weapon mounted. Used a+Up in same order as duck.
I passed till stage near flying castle and stuck cause i keep running out of daggers which surprisingly helpful vs any kinds of mobs. Hell -in previous level its only weapon to kill satyrs – sword, fireball and bare hands don’t work.
Also – it seems like it been developed for Atari 8200 first and its direct port without even graphic change, but i might be wrong. I don’t think this games is THAT bad, its just a bit offtrack from mainstream hits like Double dragon to example. Despite that – its a quiet nice game. A bit frustration – but not that painful – just don’t forget to collect spinning balls which happen to be Health-packs.

Hope everything’s going okay with the movie, and it’s good that you’re taking some time off from it – however short that may be – to focus on other things. No need to get burned out, right?

Loved the way you “toyed with” the anger in the beginning, about mentioning Total Recall – that was a “creative explosion,” LOL. The “Nerd rage” near the end was great, too – a perfect thing to get good ‘n pissed about.

Hey James, I look forward to your AVGN Movie Very Much, I came up with great idea for a nerd video when thinking that is what was going to happen at the end of this video… I was thinking your about to beat a hard game very last stage or something…….. then your power goes out..thus comes the nerd rage. … I respect right now to use this idea based on the fact that it might other people with ideas jealous.. or that you like all your ideas to be originally created by you… have a great day and I look forward to more cinnemassacre… PS .. you fan Cat-Lin

Actually “Conan: The Mysteries of Time” was released in other systems like the ZX Spectrum, Commodore and Amstrad. They used other name and it was called “Myth: History in the Making”.

Oddly enough Myth predates The Mysteries of Time by a couple of years. So it seems they just re-released something that had nothing to do with the movie. Nevertheless, Myth is a decent game, I played it back in the days, and although the controls are awkward, once you get used to it, it’s a fun game. The Mysteries of Time really seems an inferior product. Like a poor cut down version of the original.

..but wait, there’s more! I just stumbled upon another schwarzenegger game for the SNES called True Lies at my friends house. it’s a kind of bird’s-eye view shooter by the best game developer for movie-based games of all time! i found myself doing this somersault-dodging move all the time, getting away from all the pissed off enemies and the civilians who don’t give a single shit about the whole situation. And it sure looks awesome when helicopters and snowmobiles EXPLODE hitting Arnold who’s somersaulting down a snowy mountain, being chased by skiers and..

Did you know that ‘Conan’ game on NES (1991) is just an adaptation of MYTH on Amiga (1989)?
I had amiga version, and i recognize immediatly that was a poor imitation of MYTH…
If you got the time, I will recommand to anybody to try MYTH which is for me one of the best game on amiga (with Agony and Shadow of the beast 3).

      AVGN great vid as always.

Thank you, Angry Video Game Nerd, for pointing out some more rusted bullets which I shall now dodge, and let rot where they land. The Schwarzenegger games of the NES era are one of the greatest disappointments in video game history, but they still don’t outperform the atrocity that is “Godzilla Unleashed” (PS2).

That Conan game actually looks a lot like dark castle. Look at the way the enemies move, the art style, the overall shitiness. I think Star Wars NES might have somehow borrowed from DC as well.
