First! I would like to say, I am drunk as piss right now and this video is awesome!

  • tisuko

    June 3, 2012 at 12:08 am

Zelda 2 is the most hated game in the series? I thought people liked it. I know I did, it was a great game.

  • rebellion1234

    June 3, 2012 at 12:10 am

    Shit! Not first, never mind.

“Some days, you just can’t get rid of a bomb.” FTW

  • TheBrainiac1mil

    June 3, 2012 at 12:14 am

Left Speaker? I can hear it through both. Weird…
Anyway, I actually REALLY liked this video. A genuine let’s play, with no script at all. I haven’t seen too many of Mikes videos (Only the ones on Youtube, don’t know how many that would be), but I like this one the best!

  • UbiquitousGeek

    June 3, 2012 at 12:17 am

Of course it’s going to be similar to the original game. Hacks are usually just the original game with sprite alterations and level edits. My favorite hack was Super Mario Bros. remade in the image of The Smashing Pumpkins.

    June 3, 2012 at 12:19 am

Stop screaming into the mic. You talk softly then BBBLAARRGGAAGH. Jesus.

  • June 3, 2012 at 12:20 am

I gave up trying to watch this. My internet speed is super fast and this video lags super bad >.<

  • Streetguru

    June 3, 2012 at 12:21 am

so…its like an unofficial sort of official NES game? is that like the only copy or something?

  • Aaron1375

    June 3, 2012 at 12:23 am

I would say the CDI Zeldas are the most hated.

  • June 3, 2012 at 12:24 am

Well, true. But as far as official Nintendo made Zelda games, Zelda 2 usually gets a bad rap. (See AVGN Zelda 2 for more on that..)

Personally, I love Zelda 2. Blue Fokkers and all.

  • DeanD

    June 3, 2012 at 12:27 am

My god, this video is fucking amazing.
PLEASE Mike, do more like this.
Link on a train, chu chu.

“Some days, you just can’t get rid of a bomb!” hahaha, excellent!

  • Chakan

    June 3, 2012 at 12:31 am

That one guy was right dude. You talk low but then out of nowhere you get pissed off and start screaming. The video is entertaining, but you’re like blow my speakers out.

  • June 3, 2012 at 12:32 am

  • HKKstudios

    June 3, 2012 at 12:37 am

I must say this is one of your best videos since James has been gone, while its not structured or anything its great to here you actually share your opinions, all your other videos have felt really forced while this one was very enjoyable, what ever you did here keep it up if more of your videos shared this tone I would enjoy seeing them on the site instead of making me loathe in james lack of new videos. Great job and keep it up

    June 3, 2012 at 12:48 am

Pretty interesting find. I don’t think I’ve heard of this ROM hack before, though my memory is rather bad at times. Do you plan on checking out other ROM hacks, or is this just a one-time thing? (if you do, maybe you can check out Castlevania: Chorus of Mysteries)

    June 3, 2012 at 12:59 am

your reactions are awesome… nice work mike, you’re the shit πŸ˜€

  • GhostSniper

    June 3, 2012 at 1:01 am

Hey Mike, love the videos, I have only one minor complaint: I like to download them and watch them on my TV and while James’ are always compressed, for some reason yours are always 2GB+ in size! πŸ˜€

I’m not asking to go out of your way to fix that, but it’s be really nice for me if it could be done. Keep up the good work!

  • stauken

    June 3, 2012 at 1:14 am

@Mike Keep up the good vids! I appreciate the acknowledgement of megaman 9 being hard as balls. That was frustrating as fuck at times. Anyway, thx for the hard work you’ve put in lately!

Am I the only one who looked to his left when he started talking?

  • benevolent

    June 3, 2012 at 1:35 am

people are pussys. i dont have a problem with the commentary being panned to the left, personally.. not important..i guess people mention it cause it obvious..but you dont hear people bitching about how the audio difference from certain camera source shots (like sometimes when your on the couch) vs the dub or mic. to me that’s obvious but i wont complain about it as I figure its for time sake.. and the point one’s trying to get across is what matters…

    June 3, 2012 at 1:38 am

While we’re on the subject, are you and James ever going to review “The Room”?

  • benevolent

    June 3, 2012 at 1:43 am

loved the top ten obscure nes games!! think you should do more of these modern cart (post nes era) type games you ‘can’ get these days.. its obvious this one is sub par but i know there’s others out there that kick ass… (wont mention any names)
also i think it be cool if you did do a top ten of nes games that are hard to find/rare just to get it out there.. I know a few like like mighty final fight you mentioned and such… plus duck tales2 and chip and dale 2 (not as good as the originals) but still good.. could also do a top ten shitty hard to find games put contra force (i think it was called at no 1 though.. that shit sucks harry balls!! anyway mike glad to see you coming into your own with shit like this and the glitch type videos etc..

  • eightytwo

    June 3, 2012 at 2:14 am

that was some great, genuine game frustration from Mike. the purposeful look in his eyes. fuckin blood moon.

    June 3, 2012 at 4:16 am

I played this hack, but I really disliked it. Not necessarily for the difficulty, but the fact that they changed the controls and you slip while you attack which is incredibly frustrating. I didn’t like the “art style” either, the original looks a million times better, and so do many other CV1 hacks.

  • 19Szabolcs91

    June 3, 2012 at 4:21 am

Also, Mike, have you even PLAYED Spirit Tracks? Hating on a game just because “it’s Link on a train, how stupid” is really dumb.

  • The_Spy

    June 3, 2012 at 4:25 am

Mike, you were mention my little pony a lot in the vid.Are you a brony?

  • xdeathknightx

    June 3, 2012 at 4:43 am

Good review Mike. It sounds like a nice throwback to the good ol’ days but yeah like you said it’s not okay when it’s basically a rehash of Castlevania 1 in a different suit. I can imagine people wanting to give a few nods to the old games but you should at least come up with something original.

  • June 3, 2012 at 4:50 am

Now I know why they call you Motherfucker Mike. Cos you are one funny motherfucker. Choo Choo.

  • Xen11

    June 3, 2012 at 5:35 am

This was like an Angry Video Game Nerd episode. It was like a reboot; more realistic, no fantastical character, just reality. I love this review. There were genuine emotions going on there and it was funny because there was no setup, just naturality.

By the way, there is this movie titled, “Bloodmoon”. I suggest that you and James watch it. Seriously, it had my and my old pals fighting for breath. It’s a martial arts type film starring an Eddie Murphy type actor. It looks like it was filmed in the very early ’90s but it was released in 1997. The fight scenes are actually pretty good. It’s hilarious though. It’s a B movie that is full of unintentional random funny moments that you won’t believe.

  • fenderc01

    June 3, 2012 at 7:45 am

Zelda Challenge: Outlands was a good ROM hack that I enjoyed playing through.

  • Calavera

    June 3, 2012 at 8:22 am

Yes! This is all we want to see! A guy sitting on a couch playing video games. Fuck all that cinematic bullshit this is all we want. To me this video is better than most of the recent AVGN videos. Have you thought about doing a show your own reviews? Just do stuff that James hasn’t or won’t do. It could be just like this review, just give your first impression of games. I know I’d watch it..

  • DaddyOGITH

Lol. Great video mike. Like someone said already, its really nice to see your natural reactions. Awsome to see how he gets more and more angry. That sad face. Just great…
    More vids like that mike!

  • Shinoda

    June 3, 2012 at 9:44 am

Did he just say “My Little Pony piece of shit?!”

  • HappyBoy

    June 3, 2012 at 9:45 am

I completely agree with β€œXen11” and β€œCalavera”. This was actually more amusing than some of the more recent AVGN episodes. I think I speak for a lot of us, we must just seeing a guy on a couch satirizing a game. That’s all we really want.

  • chewbaca18

    June 3, 2012 at 9:51 am

Hey Mike, You should do a review of the Super Mario 64 Star Road hack. It’s like a completely different game.

  • Balgias

    June 3, 2012 at 10:03 am

    My right ear hated this.

  • GldRush98

    June 3, 2012 at 10:42 am

Mike, this is hands down your best video IMO. It was fun to watch, and the casual unscripted way you did this fit your style really well.
I would love to see more like this… maybe even find more rom hacks to play? There are a TON out there.

  • obelao

    June 3, 2012 at 10:44 am

“Somedays you just can’t get rid of a bomb”. Now there’s a quote that doesn’t get as nearly as much popularity as it deserves. Good thing Mike is aware of it =D

  • Helltech

    June 3, 2012 at 10:51 am

Oh god Mike, this was awsome and hysterical. It felt really natural, you’re good at un-scripted. You should try it again. I hope you keep doing reviews even when James gets back.

Prepare to Die? Hearing Mike talk about how games used to be makes me wish Mike and James would do a run through of Dark Souls… If only Dark Souls were ten years older

  • June 3, 2012 at 1:17 pm

Great vid, didn’t knew about this hack !

    I have two questions :

1 – Where did you find these hack/fake games on cartridges ?

2 – Did you really find megaman 9 hard ? It’s the first megaman I ever finished, I tought the difficult was perfect (oppose to megaman 10 that I can’t barely get trough the first phase of willy’s stage…)

  • June 3, 2012 at 1:22 pm

who the fuck told you Spirit Tracks was bad? that’s Bullshit, it’s like one of the best handheld Zelda games ever! the train is weird, yeah, but it’s still fun! and plus, Zelda actually GOES with you on the adventure. she’s in ghost form, but she’s actually WITH you for the whole entire game! and that is AWESOME……… know, I think you might be of Phantom Hourglass. that game had quite a few flaws. yeah, I think you’re confused Mike, you’re thinking of Phantom Hourglass.

  • Videogamepony

    June 3, 2012 at 3:51 pm

Seriously Mike, keep doing these, this is great. Let your boss turn into Orson Welles — I’m sure the movie will be great — but I’ve been excited to see each of your videos while he’s been away. If you ever branch out and do your own thing, let us know. (Just sayin…)

  • ConXept

    June 3, 2012 at 5:45 pm

Mike, I registered just to leave a comment on this great video. This video was unscripted perfection. I haven’t had this much fun with a Cinnemassacre production since last year’s AVGN. You should take over more AVGN based videos until James finishes the movie. You’re a more than worthy alternative. After that I think you need your own dedicated section on the site man. Good work and please do more.

  • Pokemaster73

  • June 3, 2012 at 7:18 pm

this honestly felt like an AVGN episode.

  • June 3, 2012 at 7:24 pm

Great video, Mike. I can totally relate to the anguish of repeatedly falling to my death like some morbid Groundhogs Day.

Anyone getting Springboard 303 errors do this:

If anyone has been getting a Error 303 when attempting to play a Flash Video (For example on or ScrewAttack etc) IT IS NOT a problem with Adobe Flash. If it is the same problem I had then it is with your HOSTS file. Now, if you even know what that is then chances are your using an alternate HOSTS file …like MVP HOSTS File or you personally have added sites to block. In this case open your HOSTS file (you can use NOTEPAD but right click and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR) Open your hosts file and delete any entries with “SPRINGBOARD” or GORILLA NATION” save and reboot! You flash video files should load and play fine now. I stumbled on this after repeatedly uninstalling / re-installing FLASH and figuring out that wasn’t the problem lol! Hopefully save someone the time and frustration!

  • Steven

    June 4, 2012 at 1:12 am

it really dont seem much like an AVGN episode to me. but it was a good review and made me in no way want to play this game. You are not AVGN with is nice even if you could emulate him perfectly i wouldn’t watch it. I say stick with doing your reviews as yourself like you have been, its fresh even though i will probly never get tired of seeing James as AVGN i would never be able to watch anyone else play the part. You bring another personality to the tablel in your reviews. So stay you and im looking forward to more.

  • June 4, 2012 at 12:43 pm

Definitely my favorite video of yours so far, and I’ve enjoyed them all. This was fucking hilarious, and probably the most nostalgic video from Cinemassacre I’ve seen in a while. Who didn’t scream their asses off at the TV while playing Nintendo when we were kids?

    Great stuff, buddy!

  • June 4, 2012 at 1:36 pm

Can you please not use Springboard for your videos? It takes forever to load on both my desktop and my laptop, and it’s not a problem with my internet connection. I even tried the trick where you push play, then pause it to let the video load completely so it doesn’t keep stopping every 5 to 10 seconds to load some more. While paused, the video refuses to continue loading past a certain point on Springboard – this does not happen with any other video app.

Please! Upload to YouTube or Blip instead. I want to watch these videos, but Springboard is making it impossible.

I’m not sure why you think Zelda 2 and Spirit Tracks are bad. Both of those games are awesome!

Aside from that, the video was pretty enjoyable. I did like that they stuck Zelda 2 stuff in there, actually.

Although, I’d say that being able to move while using the whip is a pretty big improvement!

Hey Mike, it would have been great to have some more context about the game. Who created it, or where did you get it? How come it was never released? How many copies of this were produced? Is this a fan made game? How many other of these games are out there?

The video takes way too long to load and won’t buffer. Please use a different format like youtube. Though I got it in a very chopped up way, you were hilarious!

To everyone interested, the creator of Blood Moon is a guy who goes by the alias “RedRum” (as can be seen during the start screen). It’s a Rom hack he put together years ago.
