Mike sounds tired. Or is trying not to wake up sleeping people in his house.

      February 6, 2012 at 12:51 am

Yeah i noticed also Mike did’nt seem like his normal self in this

      • MrBrrumpkins

        February 6, 2012 at 12:59 am

He even changed his name to just Mike when he posts and didn’t even have the intro. I’m not saying Mike or James are getting soft, but perhaps they are starting to mature or grow out of the whole routine. It’ll probably be a good thing if they become great movie directors and make great films. I even noticed James in the panel videos, especially with Pat, he just seems to be less ”into” things now.

      • Devil_Rising

        February 6, 2012 at 2:06 am

@MrBrrumpkins Or it could be entirely possible, that some of you folks are just looking too deeply into little details.

      • cfredtmbg

        February 6, 2012 at 2:07 am

@MrBrrumpkins I don’t think they’re maturing or changing their philosophy behind the reviews. The voice over just seems a little bland (for whatever reason) and is in need of a little more energy. Sometimes when you need to produce something on a schedule the creative spark just isn’t there, so you get an inconsistent product.

      • BRP1678

        February 6, 2012 at 2:36 am

@cfredtmbg @MrBrrumpkins No, I think he’s delivering wonderfully. Fuck the Motherfuckin’ Mondays by Mother Fuckin’ Mike thing. Shit. This is a good ass review. In fact, it encapsulated the movie so well I just bought it!

      • Devil_Rising

        February 6, 2012 at 10:11 am

@Mike/Cinemassacre That’s understandable, from that point of view. Personally, I still like the “MFer Monday” thing, but hey, who cares. Some people don’t seem to understand that while people like you and James make things to entertain others, that doesn’t mean you’re obligated to do anything any of the “Fans” say. Some “fans” can get rather bitchy and demanding, and it’s best to just ignore it, I think. As a writer and creator myself, I can sympathize. So do whatever you feel is best. It’s your work, you’re the one who has to like it at the end of the day.

      • MrBrrumpkins

        February 6, 2012 at 12:30 pm

It’s cool Mike, I seen that and responded to someone else who noticed it as well. I have no problem why you made those subtle changes, in fact I agree 100%. Also, in the AVGN : Nintendo Power episode, James starts off by saying ”It’s time to chill out, nah not worry I’m not going mellow on you or anything like that.” The reason I mention this is because that always resonated in my mind, by the way, that episode might be my favorite. So, I’m not mentioning that to condone anything I thought about your changes. As a true fan, I just noticed a change in what we all are used to getting. You explained why and I am with you Mike.

Oh gods, THIS movie! I remember seeing the Piano Scene in a YouTube clip. (For those interested: I shared that link with a couple of friends at the time, but got extremely negative/disgusted responses. Apparently they don’t share my… taste… in humor.

  • AppleCider

    February 6, 2012 at 12:58 am

Daaamm! What am I looking at here!?

Actually, these clips were kinda disturbing. It truely is a nightmarish piece.

  • Darkhyrulelord

    February 6, 2012 at 1:25 am

House is a rather generic name. They should have called it, “Blood Spewing Cat House”. That would catch people’s attention!

  • xeemo

    February 6, 2012 at 1:33 am

It was pretty interesting. I got it on a whim, and to say the least I was satisfied.

I ended up recognizing one one of the scenes from a youtube video. It appears to have quite the following.

  • February 6, 2012 at 1:35 am

    February 6, 2012 at 1:59 am

I remember my mother mentioning this film to me as a kid for some reason, because it had “Norm” from Cheers in it, which was her favorite show.

  • Devil_Rising

    February 6, 2012 at 2:02 am

I never even knew this movie existed until I saw it on TV a few weeks ago. TCM I think (which is why they’re the best channel on TV). Fuckin’ weird, for sure.

There’s another “House” movie, an American one from the 80s, with “Norm” from Cheers as a nosey neighbor. It also, is fuckin’ weird, though in a different way.

  • February 6, 2012 at 2:06 am

I fucking LOVE this movie!!! Thanks, Mike!

  • CareyPalmer

    February 6, 2012 at 2:39 am

I would like to see a remake of this.

    • metalcommand

      February 6, 2012 at 2:40 am

@CareyPalmer It would all be CGI, with horrible actors and a toned down screenplay. A generic trailer with 200 fade to black moments would announce the movie. The movie would try to explain everything and give a background to every event. Sounds like fun…. xD

      • AlexMelendrez

        February 6, 2012 at 2:55 am

@metalcommand @CareyPalmer He is right carey, Hollywood Fucks remakes up so bad it aint worth the money to go and watch it, They romanticize the shit out of everything and kill the plots with to much comercialized BS. I bet you anything that the remake of this money would become a big commercial of fancy feast or somehow put Ford somewhere in there.

      • Devil_Rising

        February 6, 2012 at 10:07 am

They honestly need to QUIT making remakes, for the most part. Especially of Sci-Fi and Horror films. 99% of the time, the classics were and are better. Just look at The Day the Earth Stood Still, or Clash of the Titans. A bunch of pretty CGI doesn’t make up for bad acting, bad writing, cheap shortcuts, etc. Sure, not ALL old films are classics. Just like not ALL remakes are bad. There have been a few that I really liked. But they’re usually the exception.

    • Sunderbuggles

      February 6, 2012 at 2:59 am

@CareyPalmer There’s no way there could ever be a remake of this worth making.

Mike, are you…..are you like, OK? you sound like your either falling asleep or bored out of your mind while you were making the voice over….

    • Devil_Rising

      February 6, 2012 at 10:05 am

@Mike/Cinemassacre @Marvipe Don’t worry Mike. Remember not to take comments on here too seriously. Most people on the internet are assholes, because they can be. I mean hell, look at some of the comments people have made about James. If you read and really considered every stupid comment morons on the this site tend to make sometimes, it’d probably sour you to even doing this. I know it would for me.Your work is fine, and I say, just “fuck it”, do what you feel. If a few needy folks are entertained, that’s their problem. Soldier on, my friend!

      • Marvipe

        February 6, 2012 at 12:55 pm

@Devil_Rising @Mike/Cinemassacre excuse me, but I wasn’t trying to be an asshole. was anything I said truly that insulting? Mike didn’t sound as enthusiastic and he usually does, so I asked him about it. how on earth is that being an asshole?

    • Marvipe

      February 6, 2012 at 12:55 pm

@Mike/Cinemassacre oh, ok. no problem. you just didn’t sound as excited as you normally do. I guess your voice just seemed…..toned down for some reason. I don’t know. but whatever, don’t worry about it.

  • Sunderbuggles

    February 6, 2012 at 2:58 am

“The first experimental horror film ever” Are you kidding me? What about Kurutta ippêji from 1926 and all the experimental horror films from 1960’s and 70’s before this, not to mention everything in between. Hell, even Eraserhead came before this, surely you’ve seen that one?

    • metalcommand

      February 6, 2012 at 2:59 am

@Sunderbuggles Well, it’s how you define ‘experimental horrorfilm’, actually. I don’t know how Mike defines it.

    • gamers_love_sprite

      February 6, 2012 at 3:37 am

@Sunderbuggles And how about The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari? I would even argue that horror is experimental by nature. All the great horror movies of the past seem normal now, because they get copied so much, but in their time they were all shocking and weird; Blair Witch, The Exorcist, The Ring, Dracula (both of them), Godzilla, Halloween, Psycho, Jaws, Carrie, Alien, The Fly, Eraserhead, The Sixth Sense, Saw, Terminator, etc..

  • Creep

    February 6, 2012 at 2:59 am

It’s way to obvious you are reading from a script reviewing this.

I can only help but think that james wrote it all for you and you read it.

at least put some effort into your line reading..

that could of been a great review.

@Creep Well, the homo part of your retort is inexplicable. I love vaginas and the juices they spew(look it up, maybe someday you’ll get a taste too). I care deeply about grammar. There are too many FUCKING MORONS online these days that do not comprehend the English language. I try to correct them whenever possible.

Hey Mike. Just wanted to let you know I really liked this review. You’re going to get a lot of flack from people who don’t like change but I don’t mind a review from you that isn’t all about bashing on a film. This film looks fantastic and I can’t wait to see it for myself. Thanks for reviewing it!

MIKE I just want to say I really prefer reviews like this. It often makes me cringe when you use corny tag lines like “motherfucker mike” and whatever. Keep it up 😀

    • LuukeNukem

      February 6, 2012 at 5:15 am

@Mike/Cinemassacre Yeah I agreed, see in the Board James series it made more sense, er “fit in” better. But when you do movie reviews or game glitches, it does tend to make light of the subject a little TOO much.

      • MartinTollberg

        February 6, 2012 at 10:45 am

@LuukeNukem @Mike/Cinemassacre I see it lives on as your reviews. That does make sense great video.

    • Devil_Rising

      February 6, 2012 at 10:01 am

@LuukeNukem Whatever man. He’ll always be “Motherfucker Mike” to most of us. How the hell is that “corny”? It’s funny, and it fits the humor Cinemassacre has ALWAYS had, Mike included. Besides, “Motherfucking Mondays” was a fantastic title, know why? Because Mondays usually ARE a real “Motherfucker”. lol

  • JakeLaFortune

    February 6, 2012 at 4:28 am

I was never a huge fan of the old intro anyway, Mike. Not that I don’t enjoy your reviews. What with all of the Nerd’s crazy crap-spewing, potty-mouthed escapades (all of which I thoroughly enjoy), I think it’d be a welcome change to to the site to see you doing some more mellow, serious work. Combining the Nerd’s insanity with your new-found style could give us the best of both worlds. Keep it up.Either way, you know your true fans will continue to support ya.

  • JayDecay

    February 6, 2012 at 4:58 am

Hey Mike, have you ever thought about doing an AMA ( Ask Me Anything) over at I think it would go over pretty well if you found the time to do it, and could give some good exposure to the site and the AVGN movie.

    • JayDecay

      February 6, 2012 at 5:10 am

@Mike/Cinemassacre You just go over to Click on the register button to make an account, then just go down to the “Submit a Link” button on the right-hand side and start your AMA.

Check out some of the other AMAs on the page to see how most people go about it (Introducing yourself, set up guidelines, what you don’t wanna talk about, etc.)

Also, the redditors over there always want verification that you’re really you, so the best way to go about that is posting a picture of yourself holding a reddit sign or somethng.

I’m excited to hear you’re interested in the idea, and hope to see you do one!

  • February 6, 2012 at 5:18 am

I didn’t expect the name “Motherfucker” to be dropped now, but actually I felt like it wasn’t appropriate the first few times you used it outside Board James, because I tought “Motherfucker Mike” was just the character in those reviews, a cheating motherfucker, not your actual nickname. Kinda like if James was called “Video Game Nerd James” or something, outside the AVGN. It may even fit, but it would create confusion with the character. So I’m perfectly fine with just “Mike”. Oh, nice review btw!

  • Thrashing Deth

    February 6, 2012 at 5:18 am

I got a question Mike. Ever heard of a movie called “Phantasm”? I don’t know if you take request but I thought it be cool if you could do a review of that movie or at least mention it, personally I find it really good but extremely underrated.

    • Nagash

      February 6, 2012 at 5:23 am

@Thrashing Deth No shit man, i fucking love those movies. I perfer the 1st and 2nd ones myself, the others….yeh. Years ago I always watched pieces of them with my brothers on old vhs that we taped a liltle of, but recently i bought the collection of them. Just my 2 cents worth but i would also love to see a review those great movies!!

    • Nagash

      February 6, 2012 at 5:24 am

@Mike/Cinemassacre @Thrashing Deth That would be sweet as Mike

      February 6, 2012 at 11:00 am

@Mike/Cinemassacre @Thrashing Deth That would be cool Mike, but I have to tell you, it’s one of those series, that the first one is superior.

  • AndrewSobotka

    February 6, 2012 at 5:20 am

This movie really reminds me of the trippy game “Yume Nikki” if you and James ever wanna play something that’s really out there I’d suggst it

I didnt know what to expect from a movie called house but this is something i would never expect to be in any movie!

  • NathanielLenox

    February 6, 2012 at 5:36 am

Shit looks so crazy and insane… I bet if you watch it on Acid, it would look like a traditional, run-of-the-mill 70s horror film. I’m not saying that Americans don’t produce some fucked up shit (Just look at Ren and Stimpy, and cartoons like that), but why is it that Japan seems to have a monopoly on insane and chaotic media? Japan’s culture revolves more around a group, while America’s tend to be more around the individual, so maybe shows like this, if any purpose at all, are meant to be seen together with friends and they together try to give the images meaning.

  • RAlexanderM

    February 6, 2012 at 5:57 am

Hi Mike! I remember seeing this film back in Japan about in the early 80’s when it came out on VCR (it was titled “Hausu” back then) and watched it a few times with my brother. It used to give me nightmares (especially that flying head and the piano.) You’ve mentioned that the house is trying to kill them, but as I recall, the heroines grandmother -who is a witch, uses the house to kill the young girls, and as more characters die, the more younger and healthier she looks (from being wheelchair bound to looking 30 years younger at the end). I would think that she is the main villain, and perhaps the house is more of a tool. You didn’t mention it, so on the off chance I thought you might have missed it. Anyway, it’s a thrill to see that someone review it and notify everyone of its existance. Thanks a lot Mike! Good going with the reviews!

      • TaylorDinsmore

        February 6, 2012 at 12:05 pm

@Erwinator yes, that version is the best as far as dvd’s go. but if you want bluray, go for the criterion one. @Mike/Cinemassacre

I think this movie would have to be more of a rent or borrow for me. If I watched it too many times I’d start having nightmares.

Mike, I’m going to have to get this on Blu-ray. Hey, come to think of it, this sort of reminds me of “The Forbidden Zone.” I’m almost positive you’ve seen it, and if not, it deserves a video!

  • huffy08

    February 6, 2012 at 10:03 am

Probably the most insane movie I’ve ever seen. It really is quite impressive how many techniques the director manages to cram into one film, and some of his shots truly are ingenious. The story is completely gonzo but it does have more substance than you’d expect, mainly through Freudian symbolism (the whole story is essentially a twisted coming-of-age tale).

  • Gui Geek

    • Big McLargehuge

      February 6, 2012 at 12:03 pm

@AaronPorter That’s most likely the American movie called House (unrelated to this movie). The cover had a severed hand holding a key to a door. It is a really good Horror/Comedy, check it out.

    • BreanStilz

      February 6, 2012 at 1:31 pm

@AaronPorter If it was a rotting hand ringing a doorbell, no, that’s another wonderful haunted house horror movie by Steve Miner. There is however a groovy illustrated palm on a lesser known Hausu poster, so maybe you saw that? Not likely though.

while everyone is waiting for James to get with the program, check this out:

Ahh HAusu, I caught wind of this a few years ago and at that time it was next to impossible to find a hard copy so I snagged the AVI to see WTF it was about. Now I have the bluray. Such a great old flick…

I’m a bit sad to see the format change for your Monday reviews, but hey not a big deal. Going simple isn’t really a bad thing, takes less time to make the video’s and I am sure Mike has plenty on his plate right now as it is.

I do feel bad for Mike. James is away doing the movie, there is a backlog of video’s to help fill in the gap of him being gone but the fans are always hungry for more and the format of a new bit of content every other day is a large hole to fill. Mike takes up the torch to offer up what he can and all he gets is grief from AVGN fans no matter what he’s doing… sheesh… I’d rather see stuff from mike then drop down to seeing only 1 new video a week. though to be honest if the site dropped to 1 bit a week I’d still be ok with that too.

Yer doin great Mike. If I had the time to drive way down to philly to shake yer hand and buy you a beer, I certainly would. Maybe soon!

    February 6, 2012 at 11:29 am

Pretty strange movie, I guess. I know, that there are some other House 2 and House 3 movies, are them from this series?

    • Big McLargehuge

      February 6, 2012 at 11:53 am

@CyrilWindlovver There is an American made series of movies from the 80s called House. They are unrelated to this movie, but they are really good themselves, especially the first one.

      • CyrilWindlovver

        February 6, 2012 at 12:02 pm

@Big McLargehuge thanks a lot for reply! So, I’ll check out both American and Japanese Houses 🙂 Btw, we have a reality show, which Russia and Ukraine hates, It goes for about 10 years allready, and it is called ‘DOM 2’, which means… House 2))

Mike never hold back because of other peoples critiscism, give it all you got!

There will always be people whining about stuff, but u gotta look past that and focus on the people who enjoy ur films and the people who give actual constructive advice. Dont take out stuff cause some guys dont like it, there is plenty of other sites to go to if they are displeased and let the rest of us enjoy what u do.

You should review “Funky Forest: The First Contact”.

  • BreanStilz

    February 6, 2012 at 1:28 pm

It should be of interest to fans to know that Hausu was created as a Japanese theatrical answer to the blockbuster Jaws. This time it’s a house that eats people!Sadly, very few of Obayashi’s works have been translated to English. Two of his must-sees have been, School in the Crosshairs (Absolutely insane psychic school movie) and The Little Girl Who Conquered Time (Wonderful adaptation of the classic Japanese story). Wonderful movies, both. If you like those, you might also like Tenkosei (Sort of a Freaky Friday variation) and The Discarnates (A family ghost story).

What the fuck is this shit, Mike? You want to do a “Monday-themed” series, and you don’t even put the introduction on there? I have Sony Vegas, man–it only takes a second to put the clip on there. This is lazy shit in my opinion. Not just the absence of the introduction, but like many have said, you sound lazy and like you don’t care. Well, I care motherfucker! Shape up or ship out man.

What I love about films from the 1970s and 80’s, such as this film, is that they are essentially film length youtube poop videos. They don’t even try to have a cohesive story. It’s just a chance for the director and editor to mess around with special effects.

    February 6, 2012 at 5:05 pm

Hey Mike, first off, you need to bring back the “Motherfuckin’ Monday” intro. I totally dug it and always looked forward to seeing what violent scenes were going to be in the next one. And second, you should do a review of the 1989 movie Sweet Home (Sûîto Homu). Yes, the VERY SAME Sweet Home that was made by Capcom and is widely considered the great-grandfather of the survival horror genre. The movie and the game were released at the same time, so it is unclear whether the movie is based off the game, or the game is based off the movie. Whatever the case may be, the movie has a lot of creep factor to it. Japanese horror and western horror are very different, and since you and James are both horror aficionados, I think you guys will appreciate it. Better yet, why don’t you review BOTH the movie AND the game?! Make it like, a Motherfuckin’ Monday special!

It’s pretty easy to find a nintendo emulator and a translated ROM of sweet home. Or you can purchase an actual translated NES cart from All you have to do is send a donor cart along with $25 and you can get an actual NES cart to play on if you don’t want to go the emulator route. I highly recommend the game, it’s creepy (in an 8-bit sort of way) it’s a fun RPG, and it paved the way for games like Resident Evil to come about.

Keep up the great work Mike!

Sorry but that review was boring.

  • February 6, 2012 at 8:43 pm

This is the first movie that you’ve reviewed that I actually want to watch now. Your reviews of the previous movies weren’t bad, but the movies themselves just didn’t really look like they would be entertaining enough to bother getting and watching.

Im sure this movie is nothing like it, but the shots you showed made it feel like its going to be similar to Kill Bill (or rather I should say Kill Bill is similar to it since it came out years later.)

Also, I miss the “Its Mother Fuckin’ Monday!” intro. I don’t know if you took it out to make editing faster, or if it had something to do with it saying mother fucker. Either way, it was a fun way to set the tone before watching the reviews.

  • phookangloosehair

    February 6, 2012 at 8:50 pm

Thanks for making these Mike. However this didn’t feel like a regular review form you. Seemed like maybe you were tired or sick maybe? Just kind of seemed like you were reading and just kind of blah. I like the (WHAT THE F*CK WAS THAT) kind of thing that you are just so damn good at. That being said, I did like the review and will have to check this movie out. Seems to be just the kind of film to show at church. Thanks again for doing these things. I know that doing one of these a week has to be hard on ya.

    • CraigMillar

      February 6, 2012 at 10:31 pm

@phookangloosehair What, now we’re expecting some sort of entertainment value, or fictional character like AVGN out of Mike? Mike’s just a regular guy doing a movie review. I don’t understand what you want lol.

      • DaveMcGrath

        February 7, 2012 at 12:22 am

@CraigMillar Don’t jump down his throat. He was pretty chill about making his point and even backed it up with a compliment. Don’t know what got you fired up but it didn’t warrant the hostility dump you just took on Phook.

      • phookangloosehair

        February 7, 2012 at 9:30 pm

@DaveMcGrath @CraigMillar Actually I was more concerned for Mike. Like I said ” this didn’t feel like a regular review form you”. I figure the guy is jumping through hoops to do these things and god knows what else. I also say I “thank you” for doing them. Seemed like he may have been ill or on a time constraint with everything else. So where was the hostility?

      • phookangloosehair

        February 7, 2012 at 9:39 pm

@DaveMcGrath @CraigMillar You know what, both you guys are cool in my book. Thanks for the defense Dave.

I actually watched House myself the other day, so this release is really great timing! It’s an interesting movie, though, and I’d definitely recommend it if you’re up for a weird, creepy experience. At first, it seems pretty goofy, but it gets progressively more scary as it goes on.

    February 6, 2012 at 10:41 pm

LMAO! I’ve never liked the word “pianist” either, I’ve always used the word “piano player”. I’m glad I’m not alone on that. XD

  • Rachel Equivocal

    February 6, 2012 at 10:41 pm

Wait, why are you reviewing House? It’s a legitimately good film.

  • JerrySanbox

    February 6, 2012 at 11:43 pm

is it me or does Mike seem really mellow ..not that its a bad thing ,,jus usually he’s a little more amped.. and why no MOTHERFUCKING MONDAY intro..that i dont like

    • DaveMcGrath

      February 7, 2012 at 12:15 am

@JerrySanbox I know what you mean… He seems to have a chip on his shoulder now? I wouldn’t blame the guy with some of the comments I see here sometimes. People can be assholes to him and James. But I also remember when we only knew him as motherfucker mike and he had a certain style that I had gotten used to seeing. But the trolls may have ruined allot of the magic for him? Or I am looking into it too much and should say fuck it!

    • rush86

      February 7, 2012 at 2:03 am

@JerrySanbox dude this is not mother fuckin mondays its just a plain video review like james does so hes bein more serious

  • Jamone911

    February 7, 2012 at 12:09 am

Where is the ITS MOTHER F$&KING MONDAY!!! That’s always my fav part. Review was good but I feel empty without the intro 🙁

  • DaveMcGrath

    February 7, 2012 at 12:17 am

I ususally like weird flicks but… Fuuuuuuck this movie! It was just not my cup of tea. Funny sure. But damned stupid too. I think if you appreciate the culture gap then you will get more out of it than I did. (east coast)

Even MST3K probably couldn’t do anything with it!

  • omega_apex

    February 7, 2012 at 12:29 am

I don’t understand why a lot of people are jumping on Mike for doing poorly…I thought it was quite well…it’s not like James puts on the AVGN skin to do a movie review…Be thankful Mike is even there to continue to provide us with entertainment…he didn’t have to do that so bravo Mike! Keep it up!

    • DaveMcGrath

      February 7, 2012 at 12:37 am

@omega_apex Most of the related comments are concerned criticism and compliments. Not too many folks are all out attacking Mike. Not saying you are right or wrong but I have seen much worse on these comments in previous videos.

I like to see who will review james movie in 10 years from now.

  • BenjaminOstermeier

    February 7, 2012 at 1:58 am

Wow, I thought this would be a different movie than the one you reviewed. I think House is an old American horror movie from the 80s, but I could be wrong. Maybe I am thinking of Amityville Horror.

Anyway, that movie sure does look crazy; I might have to check it out sometime.

  • rush86

    February 7, 2012 at 2:04 am

great video but please bring mother fuckin mondays back

    • Hanglyman

      February 7, 2012 at 2:47 am

@rush86 This pretty much IS Motherfuckin’ Monday, isn’t it? He reviews a crazy movie on Monday, same as every other week. The only difference is it doesn’t say “Motherfuckin’ Monday” at the beginning.

      • rush86

        February 7, 2012 at 6:24 am

@Hanglyman na mike replied to someone in another video and said motherfuckin mondays is done.

    February 7, 2012 at 3:33 am

I’ve seen this movie, about two years ago at an independent theatre. It’s amazingly hilarious.

  • February 7, 2012 at 4:20 am

    Dear MoFo Mike,

Although I almost NEVER comment on the site, I come here all the time and find it hilarious, regardless of whether it’s a James or Mike-heavy piece I’m watching. I think there’s a badzillion people like me out there who love your work but see no reason to comment. Then you have the hydrocephalic, inbred nincompoops who constitute a vocal minority with more stillborn opinions than sense.

You should continue to please the former, dude.

    February 7, 2012 at 5:56 am

These last few movies have all been really mother fuckin’ awesome in my opinion. I’d much rather watch some old crazy cult films than new big budget super hero movies with enough CGI to make me think it’s a video game.

  • Century Of Obscurity

    February 7, 2012 at 6:59 am

This looks great, and is perhaps the film Mike was after during the House of the Dead commentary, a house that attacks people.

    • February 7, 2012 at 12:49 pm

@Mike/Cinemassacre Surely there is always going to be a person / evil spirit controlling a killer house, as long as we work on the assumption that a house itself does not possess any sort of soul.

  • TasosSaroglou

    February 7, 2012 at 7:02 am

When i saw the title i thought the house that we all know the trilogy not that one, though i would love to see that just for fun with some friends its prety spooky with its own unic way.But you tell us that they have release that on blue ray and not fright night? what do they thinking! like james would probably would say.

  • Griffin

    February 7, 2012 at 7:19 am

The theater I work at, as a projectionist, played this film a couple years ago as part of a film festival. I didn’t get to watch the whole thing, but every time I heard loud screaming or some other strange sound I went running to the window to see what was happening. It’s funny you mention it having film grain and suggesting the Bluray version because I remember playing it from a beta tape.

  • Shane Donnelly

    February 7, 2012 at 7:52 am

This is one of the most amazing mindfucks ever put on film. I had to throw it on again after watching the review.

  • Trojan_Reggae

    February 7, 2012 at 8:28 am

I call BS!!! This film was def released in the US before. I remember seeing this movie and even renting it on VHS back in the mid 90’s. It was sooooo funny. my friends and I all passed it around and showed it to everyone like a cult classic.

    • DaveMcGrath

      February 7, 2012 at 10:03 am

@Trojan_Reggae I am trying to imagine how a kid would react to this?!?! Did your folks know you saw it lol?

      • Trojan_Reggae

        February 8, 2012 at 1:26 pm

I’m very flattered that you think I was still a kid in the mid 90’s, but I assure you I was old enough to drive and out of my folks house by the time I rented this flick. Not all fans of James and Mike are teenagers, some of us are in their 30’s and come here to get a heavy dose of NEStalgia. 8-bit FTW!

    • Trojan_Reggae

      February 8, 2012 at 1:31 pm

@Mike/Cinemassacre Come to think of it, I believe it was an Import. So I withdraw my previous “BS” and give my apologies. This was a great review and brought back some fun memories of drinking with my friends and watching some weird weird movies.

This is one of those movies that I see all the time when sifting through Criterion Collections and always wondered what the hell it was! I was always curious whether it had anything to do with the 80’s horror film starring George Wendt. Now I know! Thanks Mike!

Also, for anyone looking to buy this movie, the bluray is pretty damn cheap on amazon for a Criterion Collection. At least right now it is.

I tend to agree on the whole “I miss the MFM intro” topic.

It’s cool that you’re sick of hearing Motherfucker all the time, the joke was getting old anyways, but the intros themselves were awesome. It was fun trying to recognize all the random clips of obscure movies along with that classic “death music”.

I can understand getting tired of the ‘motherfucker’ moniker, and also of people that just didn’t get it (tho I think most Cinemassacre fans would just say “screw those guys for not getting it”).

Anyways, I do think that it would be a good idea to at least have some sort of name for these weekly reviews. “Motherfuckin’ Mondays” was really memorable, and made it easy to remember that these reviews would be coming out every Monday.

Mike, thank you for reviewing this. Initially I thought this was a review for a movie, House (1986), that has been in my Netflix queue for a while – but boy was I wrong. Now I am looking forward to seeing both of these. I find it interesting that House (1977) had the same fast-paced editing as something like Tetsuo: The Bullet Man (2009).

I watched this last night, and it’s almost as crazy as I was imagining. Experimental effects and unorthodox deaths, and how you didn’t see fit to mention a man turning into bananas I will never understand.

I was thinking of a different House when I clicked on this

  • JoshSilvis

    March 25, 2012 at 4:30 am

I was thinking of a different House too, but not the show (I do love the show though).  I used to live in an apt by myself. I didn’t have TV or Internet, and I lived right next to a library, so I’d get books all the time. One time I got a book called House. It was a horror/suspense novel. It was ok, kinda obscure. I’d heard it was made into a movie and I thought that was what this was. This though is…the hell man. It’s one of those movies I wouldn’t watch alone because it’s that special kind of weird and demented that only Japan can do. I mean..they raise the bar when it comes it weird, weird, WEIRD shit. Seriously, I have seen more LSD meets an asylum shit come from Japan than anywhere else. Ignoring the fact that this isn’t my kind of horror movie, the effects are very impressive for ’77. I mean, no CGI, that;s all practical, old school effects..

  • Zoetrope

Mike, if you liked this I can very much recommend Jigoku (1960) by Nobuo Nakagawa. I think it´s fare to say that it´s one of the first splatter films ever made.

  • Liz

    January 10, 2013 at 1:06 am

Actually, this movie is almost like “Sweet Home”. It was also made by Toho, but in 1989. What’s cool about “Sweet Home” is that a game based on the movie was made on the very same day. It involves people being trapped in a haunted house. If it wasn’t for this movie and game, Resident Evil/Biohazard may not have existed. Mike, I would love to see you review that movie. To my knowledge, it’s still on youtube.

  • September 1, 2013 at 3:24 pm

James and Mike should do a combo episode of Sweet Home the movie AND the game. That would be awesome.

I had a chance to watch this a few years ago and you were definitely right about how weird it is. Lol, I was surprised you didn’t censor some of the nudity in the clips you chose. Especially of a particular girl’s severed body parts that was dancing around; i’m sure you didn’t censor it because she was so ”flat” that you didn’t think they were boobs 😛

Dear Mike, I went to see this movie yesterday at a local indie cinema. Thank you for uncovering this gem. I am really glad I got to see it on the big screen. Although the audience were sometimes obnoxious and wanted to laugh at everything including the bloody A bomb because in the their minds every scene is japan-a-mazing! Seriously they was raucous but outrageously fake laughing everytume the cat appeared. I think they were worried that the people they were sitting with would think them stupid or not cool if they didn’t laugh at Japanese people.they wouldn’t sit through a Bollywood movie and laugh at everything the way they did with this movie. Anyway got a little of topic. GREAT FILM, GREAT RECOMMENDATION see it in the cinema if you can.

Greetings from 2016. I zipped over here after watching James’s review in the last ever Monster Madness marathon. It’s nice to see film clips here, though.
I f!rst saw Hausu two Halloweens ago and couldn’t believe what I found. As a fan of WTF cinema, it’s a real gem. It’s amazing to think it even predates Evil Dead.
All right, now I’m traveling n my time machine back to 2016 (which will be the past for anyone else reading this).
