Mailbag videos coming soon on ScrewAttack

James / December 1st, 2011

I filmed 6 videos of me sitting down reading some fan emails. (about 10 minutes each) This is a new feature on ScrewAttack’s new advantage program. The video promo explains it better, but basically the deal is, if you want to throw in a few dollars for a month, you can get access to ScrewAttack content a week or so before it comes out to the general public.

Obviously, this is optional. You can just watch the videos like normal, free as always, when they go live public. But this is a little something extra. I know everybody’s been really supportive with the AVGN movie fundraiser and everything. You’ve already given so much. This is just another option to help support ScrewAttack/Cinemassacre and the AVGN movie.

See the video promo here.

you need to adopt a business model that doesn’t have you sucking out kids’ lunch money to fulfill your “vision”

    • gonzoneil

      December 1, 2011 at 12:58 pm

@Schizima this is a bit harsh. besides, the pressure is coming from ScrewAttack. they’re the ones that are begging for money.

      • Schizima

        December 1, 2011 at 1:28 pm

@gonzoneil yeah ok. Phone apps, merchandise, ad revenue, begging for donations, begging for donations again, now charging people money to see viewer mail a week early. It’s just going to escalate from here. Making movies is expensive but if I’m buying a ticket to see a film that’s my support, this has gotten way out of hand.

Which part of “screw attack’s idea” do you not understand? It’s a feature on screw attack – James is only involved because they post videos for him.

      • gonzoneil

        December 1, 2011 at 1:34 pm

@Schizima trust me. this viewer mail thing is all ScrewAttack. they changed their site and implemented an ‘Advantage Program’ they’re losing hits and desperately clamping down to try and preserve the ad revenue. now they’re trying to tap into James’s success again. the funny thing, though, is ScrewAttack wouldn’t be half as big if it weren’t for them being lucky and signing a partnership with James before he really took off.

        December 1, 2011 at 1:47 pm

I should be more clear about where I stand if I’m going to indict them so severely. I love(d) ScrewAttack. it was a pretty badass community before they revamped their site (for the fifth time) and castrated the tight-knit community. they also hacked away at their once-strong features without apology or explanation. Craig is very smart but at times insensitive and stubborn. it has ultimately driven me away from the site.

@Schizima ticket sales happen after the movie is made, genius. If he can’t afford to make the movie, he is obviously not getting any money from ticket sales.

It’s simple: if you don’t want to give money, that’s fine. You aren’t obligated. Just don’t act like a jackass if someone asks for some help.

@LordMoe Then he needed to take out a studio loan like 99% of other filmmakers. I feel sorry for the kids throwing a hundred+ dollars out of their piggy banks. I support a few donation requests. It’s gotten out of hand now.

      • LordMoe

        December 1, 2011 at 2:55 pm

@Schizima I very highly doubt he’s been running off of donations alone. Also, the difference here is that he already has a fanbase. A lot of filmmakers don’t have a fanbase like this to start with, and the only option they have is to take out a loan. Loans suck ass, if you had a choice of getting all your money from loans or having some fans help out here and there, what would you choose?

And what’s with the use of “kids” “lunch money” and “piggy banks”? I highly doubt there are many young kids scrounging up hundreds of dollars to donate, especially since you need a checking account to donate.

@[email protected] You mean the ones where they’re saying screwattack is asking for the money, because it clearly says up above that HE wants the money for his movie. Maybe your reading skills aren’t so sharp.

You’re hopeless. Click on the second link James provided and you’ll see this is a screw attack thing. They’re setting it up and doing it. James has his videos posted on their site, so they’re involving his videos, and they give all of the video creators money from it too.

But the entire setup is from Screw Attack; they want your money.

        Is that clear enough?

      • Schizima

@WestBuiltAMountain You might want to read the last sentence on his post.

        Quoting myself:

“They’re setting it up and doing it. James has his videos posted on their site, so they’re involving his videos, and they give all of the video creators money from it too.”

And now if a website were giving you money and you were working on a big project… What would you do with it…? So of course it’s an ‘option’ for donating, but the entire SCREW ATTACK ADVANTAGE PROGRAM is Screw Attack – not James… They’re giving him money because they’re using his videos… DURPA DURPA!

I can’t do this anymore. Your lack of comprehension is just frustrating. Hopefully it’ll click in soon.

      • fob911

        December 1, 2011 at 9:37 pm

@[email protected] You know full well he is not begging. The whole idea of the Indiegogo fundraiser is that he thought that a portion of the budget would come from investors. It now seems that the entire budget can be funded by the fans. And, he signed like 20 million pictures. Now, if it does happen that the entire budget is funded by the fans, it will be a great moment in history. Now, I just hope it’s good. I didn’t donate (sorry to say) but don’t fuckin criticize him. He is living his dream from “A no budget dream” and is being budgeted by the fans.

      December 8, 2011 at 2:08 pm

@Schizima Write a letter to your favourite video game company or movie studio, and tell them to stop charging you money to bring their visions to life. They should be able to fund all their projects with loans, right? Yeah, banks, governments and investors totally do that.

  • KennyD

    December 1, 2011 at 3:12 pm

Haha this is all really funny…. Don’t pay if you don’t want to…. That simple. The keyword in all these replies is he “always ASKS for donations etc….” ASKS…. He isn’t like, “Hey if you don’t send me some money you won’t see these videos.” If you have the extra money, and have enjoyed James’s videos then why would you not donate? He spends his own time/money to entertain YOU and all you guys can do is bitch that he ASKS for donations…. Crazy. As for Screw Attack, they pay him for his videos and such… Whatever contract he has with them, they are like his work/job/boss as far as some of his videos go. If your work had a new way of running things and they wanted you to tell people about it, would you say no? Plus he said right in the description that it is optional…. Go somewhere else with your negative comments about someone who busts there ass to keep thousands of people he has never met entertained.

    • LordMoe

      December 1, 2011 at 3:14 pm

@KennyD people are just selfish and sad. It’s funny that the people who call him money grubbing are the people who are being cheap in the first place.

    • CraigMillar

      December 1, 2011 at 7:08 pm

You’re the man KennyD. EXACTLY! How many years has James spent spending HIS money, giving up HIS time, HIS social life (lol just making a guess with this one) to entertain you little freeloaders? Sure, he gets enjoyment out of it, because it’s what he likes to do, but he never EVER demands you pay money to see the videos. He asks for help, because he’s making a movie, for YOU to see, which will probably not make him any money when it’s all said and done. And you have the balls to complain and basically call him out because he politely asks for donations for the movie, money that is going towards entertainment…once again FOR YOU. Seriously people….you’re the types of ungrateful, ignorant retards that make me lose faith in the human population. Get dead, please.

  • Big McLargehuge

    December 1, 2011 at 3:48 pm

James, after reading some of the comments below I have to say, you have the most, um, “interesting” fanbase… They’d just as soon throw heaps of praise on you as they would slit your throat.

Anyway, I’m ALWAYS entertained when I visit (which I do daily). If not from the video of the day then it’s from the hilarious comments from all the people who comment on it.

I can’t wait for the movie, man. It’ll look great amongst my DVD/Blu-Ray collection.

  • sterling.treadwell

    December 1, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Hey now.. thats a fine howdy doo. I see James taking more time out of his day to offer more free content to his fans. And to boot, the content he is producing is him celebrating his fans by reading their mail on line and answering questions and showing how much he appreciates them.

And he is doing this via a website that gives people the option to view the video’s earlier and in higher def for a pretty pathetic monthly fee, a good portion of which goes to James(at least if you flag him as your fave when you sign up) and thus, to fund all the content he is giving and his upcoming movie.

Note I said “Option”. Anyone with half a brain and an eye for business would look at the options: Ok you could make these videos and just put them out there and HOPE someone might smile and send more donations.. or you could participate with a well established website that has worked closely with you in the past and cross promoted eachother and help drive business for yourself and them, helping to make a profit. Either way your fans can see your work totally free so you aren’t screwing anyone over… hmm.. i wonder…

James, I am really horrified by the reaction your efforts are getting. But it’s the internet. Jees.. after I wrote all that.. I think you need to create a “You know whats’ bullshit” about this.. If you do.. damn… I’ll get a year of screwattack’s advantage program and flag you as my fave! I’ll name my first born son after you! I’ll go to a street corner dressed as the AVGN and ring a bell asking for donations to your movie all holiday season! In my boxers! .. hmm… are there AVGN boxers? .. i’d buy that too!

  • Akuma

    December 1, 2011 at 4:17 pm

Wow. This is pretty lame. No wonder people don’t like this. No matter how you word it, what this really means is “unless you give us money, you have to see videos a week late”. It’s sticking it to those that can’t/don’t/won’t throw their money around to everyone on the internet that wants it, rather then giving a bonus to those that do give you money. Unless all these years of releasing videos you would hold off on releasing them for a week for no reason, or just oddly thought “I would release a video today if we had a donators list to make it available to, but since we don’t I’ll wait a week and release it for everyone”.

I just lost a lot of respect for you guys, and will likely visit this site a fraction as much as I have.

    • LordMoe

      December 1, 2011 at 4:27 pm

@Akuma depends on how you look at it. Is the glass half empty, or half full?

    • starscream

      December 1, 2011 at 4:38 pm

@Akuma If you don’t pay, you still get to see the video. I don’t see a problem with it. You can’t have everything for free. It’s not like they’re forcing you to pay to watch the video.

    • CoreyCantrell

      December 1, 2011 at 7:48 pm

@Akuma Dude…listen. As someone who runs a website, does videos, and all that stuff…it gets fucking expensive. But you can’t demand money from your viewers, obviously, and you really only make so much in advertisements and what not that it barely pays off all the other expenses. So, the only reasonable middle ground is to offer a sort of VIP treatment, kinda like what Fraser from Video Games Awesome does. Where as, if you donate money, you’ll get exclusive content. They’re still releasing the videos on time and shit, the only thing different is that the donators get the content early. If anything you should be more than willing to support something that you enjoy. It only makes sense. Creating Entertainment isn’t cheap, and if it was, you’d be getting some really shitty videos….so weigh it out, and I’m sure you’ll realize it makes sense. But bitching about it just makes you seem like an ungrateful asshole. Juussstttt saying.

  • rafaelflores

  • WestBuiltAMountain

    December 1, 2011 at 5:36 pm

All of this arguing is downright stupid. We’re all fans of James, so let’s try to just end the stupid bickering.

On a side note – I just got an eBay order I bought… Nintendo Power magazines (from between 19 to 67, only missing a couple in that span). They’re in perfect condition with ALL of the inserts still in them: posters, trading cards, ads… everything.

Thanks to James for getting my interest in the NES and SNES back to what it was when I was a kid. I feel stupid for throwing it all out as a child, but I’m building my collection back up. Even got the one magazine I remember most – #34 – with the huge spread on A Link to the Past – my favorite NES/SNES game ever.

So while this isn’t exactly on topic to the message – thanks, James. Without your videos, I probably wouldn’t have gotten back into this great stuff.

  • CraigMillar

    December 1, 2011 at 7:01 pm

Wow…lol you guys are so lame and petty. For those thinking this translates to “unless you pay you see the videos a week late” you’re looking at it from a negative perspective. I’m sure what this feature means is that you see the videos a week EARLY. You still would have had to wait the extra week to see them anyways, so what’s the difference? The only difference now is that you know that the video is available to those who are paying money. So what? You were never paying money before, and were waiting the extra week, so why do you think you’re entitled to see them early now? You’re fucking stupid. Grow up and get a life.

I am just beaming that there is actual debate happening here instead of all positive comments.

Good job all, no matter what side of the coin you are on.

As for my take, I stand on the free side, with out bitching. I have a career and it keeps me busy so ill never notice the week, it will all be normal to me.

    thanks for reading.

Oh, and Craig Millar i have to do this just because the door is open. This is in good fun, but I see this opportunity as poetic.

Yesterday you told me to calm down and stop taking this site and everything so seriously.

I think it would be wise, if one would take ones own medicine.

You seem a little upset, breath, glass of water and a chill pill.

I had to, it’s like the cosmos lined up. Take it as you will.

    • CraigMillar

      December 1, 2011 at 11:10 pm

My post is still about people taking the site too seriously. (complaining about free videos) I don’t see how my speech towards the angry SERIOUS people constitutes as me taking the site too serious. I take it how it is. I watch videos when I see videos and I move on. Unless I see bitching. Then I need to teach some people a lesson. Nothing hypocritical about that in regards to what I said to you, at all. But regardless, the top half of your post I agree with. It’s not very hard to keep busy enough that anyone should notice the week. Everyone needs to chill.

I honestly cant believe these people are complaining. They have been getting this service for free for years now and now there complaining.. but wait here is the funny part, ready? There complaining cause ITS STILL THE EXACT SAME “FREE” CONTENT they have been getting. Now theres just a cool bonus if you pay you can see them before there release to the public FOR FREE, have a stressed enough yet that everything is still exactly the same and FREE??? P.S. James you do a great job here and you are a inspiration to us all. If i was you I’d make people pay for the excellent work you put up here for FREE! Have a nice day everyone 🙂

@Rat_poison I totally agree. Sadly, like in nature, once a Parasite, Always a parasite. These people are more concerned with their own well being than anyone else, and have gotten so used to bloodsucking off other bigger creatures for their sustenance (read: entertainment) that they can’t fathom fending for their own food, nor having to do anything in return for the free meal. Much of what they’re griping about is akin to ” I’ve been sucking Jame’s blood for free for years, now he wants me to help him out or else I can only suck blood every other week?! HELLS NO. This is lame!”

It’s weird to see people complaining about this! It’s just a little something extra, he still posts new videos here from time to time. It’s not even expensive ‘subscription’. His Nerd videos will still be free, but people who pay will see them first as for people who don’t see them later.

Support James and his team if you can. It’s not all that much. Hopefully I’ll be able to get into this subscription at some stage when I have the spare money.

I wonder why James even maintains an association with Screwattack. James shows and website are much more popular then Screwattack. Seems to me that Screwattack is ran by a jerk named Craig who shows no end to his own greed. James association with ThatGuyWithTheGlasses is the complete opposite where that site helps James out without asking anything in return.

I want to clarify I have nothing against a program where you pay to get to see content from James early. In fact I would gladly pay for this if it was done directly by James and not through Screwattack. The fact that Screwattack is taking a cut of that money is what bothers me.

@p3n1s77 Screwattack has the infrastructure to host videos and collect and distribute payments. Cinemassacre is hosted in his personal basement. One man can’t host videos to be played thousands of times, collect credit card payments, and make movies. In a way James hires Screwattack the same way you hire a contractor to paint your house.

Cinemassacre is hosted in an amazing datacenter called CoreExchange in Texas, by a great group of people called PCL Solutions. Cinemassacre is serving every video in the mobile app themselves from Cinemassacre or Screenwave Media servers in that facility. Cinemassacre and Screwattack both use 3rd parties like and Springboard Video to serve videos on the web. Screwattack provides merch services for Cinemassacre.

@[email protected]@p3n1s77 Ok, but why PCL solutions?

I’ll gladly give Cinemassacre money, and will be giving at least 200 to the donation page soon, but there’s no way I’m giving ScrewAttack money. I’ll do that then maybe I’ll donate some money to the Game Heroes and Irate Gamer when I’m done.

@KennanWard I’m pretty new in the scene, what’s so bad about ScrewAttack?

There is nothing wrong with Screwattack. I think people just have some twisted and screwed up agenda against them. I’d dare say that Screwattack helped James a lot.

Craig saw his videos on Youtube many years ago back when James only had the couple on Youtube. Craig got a hold of James, and they’ve had a business relationship since. Because Screwattack was/is also working with Gametrailers, that also helped bring in revenue for James.

@[email protected] There is nothing really wrong with screw attack aside from the fact they as a website and a concept grew over the years and gained a lot of fans and webspace. The problem is most of these yutz’s think websites exist thanks to the magic web fairy and that if a website started small and was completely free and “for the fans” it should always be that. Problem is as a website grows and gets immensely popular it requires bigger and more dedicated web servers to handle the thousands of users who are hitting it up for games, videos and news stories every few seconds. This is no cheap feat. The magical web fairy usually flitters away absent mindedly and forgets all about huge sites like that. So then the owners have to come up with various creative ways to bring in some revenue so they don’t have to shut down.

The Screwattack site underwent a huge change a number of months ago to a new design that is vastly different looking than the ld site, and thus a lot of folk started kermit flailing because it was different. There is also the “Advantage” program which allows those who choose to participate (read: support the site by donating money) to be ad-free and see some exclusive content (outtakes/bloopers/etc) and they also get early access to videos that are exclusive to the site.

A lot of the issue with screw attack really comes down to the people that want to live as a parasite/leech and get their needs fulfilled with no return, and those who prefer symbiosis and want to both enjoy the site and also give back to help the site keep going. Leechs just want to keep leeching and never be troubled.

If you dig through the comments here you’ll actually see Chad from screwattack replying to some of the people over here with concerns about the dvd’s and other merchandise. I see that as a sign they’re really TRYING to be receptive to their fans and progress to grow as a website and do the right thing. And yet despite this..

Haters gonna hate. Just like here with AVGN, despite free content and all the time/money/effort/emotional distress James and Mike and friends, people ae going to flame him and just not care. Mostly you have to just ignore all the hate and see for yourself. 🙂 Don’t take my word for it that the site is good OR bad.

Screw Attack is lame.. wish you would just let the burn James… One Mailbag vid a month? End my life now… lmao. And Advantage program? One of the worst marketing gimmicks known to man… Horrendous idea… If they need extra money, there are better ways to do it.

@JeramieKruger James needs the extra money. He gets the cash whenever we use Screwattack. That’s why James use to scrub Youtube of his videos…so he could make a little money when we watch them on Screwattack.

@JeramieKruger Alright then Cheese head, how about you give James a better marketing gimmick hmm? Tell him about the “better ways to do it” and he might give them a shot?

James, out of all the 80s goodness and other old school stuff you’ve reviewed, how the heck can you pass over Sword and the Sorcerer?

I ave no issue with giving James money, but not via Screw Attack. Having to watch a ad that is so far off base is enough not to mention, it is always the same ad. I’ll donate direct and wait a week. I’m sure Paypal takes a smaller percentage of the donation anyway, letting James keep most of it.
