I thought Halloween 4 was pretty good. In the series, I rank it behind 2 and H20, sequel wise. Granted I haven’t seen 3, 6, or the remake’s sequel. The ending scene when I first saw shocked me lol because I did not expect it. Yea the ending is pretty bad, like how the hell could that kill Myers? I think its better than the ending of the 5th one though. Like its funny because you see Michael shove a gun through someone through a wall and then he gets beat down by an aged and battered Dr. Loomis? Ahhh so funny!

  • October 26, 2011 at 12:15 am

That’s the bum from Pee Wee’s Big adventure!!

So right about the opening credits scene. I was just watching this with my brother tonight and I told him “THAT’S what Halloween looks like.”

  • WestBuiltAMountain

    October 26, 2011 at 12:27 am

So, is Myers alive or dead-alive? Because him being alive would make absolutely no sense with the amount of things that have happened to him. It just seem flat out stupid and pointless.

Is he more like Jason where he’s back from the dead?

I’m watching this right now. The reverend was awesome!

I LOVED the opening scenes, it reminded me of Halloween in my area; rural, with a touch of mystery and mysticism.

“Does he shoot people with a knife..” HAHAHA

  • October 26, 2011 at 1:10 am

Hey, did my other comment not post?

  • October 26, 2011 at 1:14 am

Awesome video as always! Getting sick of the First 5 California commercials though…I want to punch Derek Fischer in the face.

Also, LOVE what you’re doing with the AVGN Movie! It looks like you’re trying to make a very professional film. I hope you get a great pro cinematographer, and don’t skimp on that or on locations and set dressing. That stuff can make your film look way more expensive than it is.
Also, hope you get some awesome character actors.

I’m sure you’ll make it a great Movie, and not just a funny online video. You’re a talented guy James, and I wish you the best. If you guys are ever shooting in LA, I’d love to drop by and lend a helping hand in any way.

I just watched the final 1/3 of this film on AMC (though I’ve viewed it a few times over the years). I think it’s watchable, but nothing remarkable.

Halloween 4 was a great movie if you ignore the plot holes, its just a shame they didnt show or tell you how Jamie Lee died. I think its one of the better squeals.

God dammit, fuck Derrick Fischer. How about stop worrying about kids being fat and trying to end the NBA lockout.

But I have to say, I’m happy that the last series for Monster Madness is one with legendarily shitty sequels. Normally the MM videos have been about more legitimate horror series but ending it this time with more humorous reviews is a nice change of pace

This was actually the first movie of the series I ever saw. It was in a hotel room in Vegas, during a Halloween (the holiday, not the series) marathon on AMC or TNT or whatever acronym.

Can’t say it was a great movie, but it was engaging enough to keep me in my room and out of the casino for 2 hours that night.

  • HorrorNerd

    October 26, 2011 at 2:45 am

I really like this movie and put it behind the original. Plot holes aside, it’s fast paced, characters are all likeable, the kills are awesome! I love the shotgun kill lol. It still has the eerieness to it too, very creepy like the first, the music is great, and I actually happen to really like the mask, again I rank the mask 2nd to the original.

However, it’s all downhill from Halloween 4, and yes, that includes h20.

“Does he shoot people with a knife?”– man, that had me laughing. The girl in this movie–the one from Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead–is a great actress and she is in a lot of the Halloween movies. A

and is in my opinion perhaps one of best sequels. The film returned to the basics of the first, and michael is back in the shadows, and dark as ever. Dr Loomis is always as good. This is in my opinion the last frightning halloween film made, especially the notion that michaels target is an innocent pure little child, and what happens to her at the end reveals that evil never dies.

Hahahaah, why did you use a clip from Robocop for the intro?? as much as i was delighted to see it (its my favorite movie franchise) i thought you were supposed to use only horror movie clips. Anyway, thats sure a hell of a bloody scene.

  • dudeamis

    October 26, 2011 at 5:25 am

for those wondering why Michael doesn’t die, its because he is the personification of evil, you can’t kill an idea, so you can’t kill Michael.

    October 26, 2011 at 5:41 am

Get excited, because the films only get worse from here. Not to incur the wrath of fans but…why is he reviewing these movies again? Aside from Part 3 they were all made to cash in on the success of one extremely influential independent movie, and none of them excell particuarly. I just see it as a missed oppurtunity for the last part of the sequel-athon.

  • Cilliandrew

    October 26, 2011 at 6:20 am

It really is a decent sequel, once you get past the disappointment of them bringing Michael back. (he was dead as a door nail!)

I remember reading an interview with Donald Pleasance where he expressed his disappointment that they didn’t run with the idea of Jaime becoming the new Michael in #5. I have to agree. They had more then enough opportunities to keep this series fresh and interesting, but they always resorted back to making the cheap bucks.

  • October 26, 2011 at 6:20 am

I don’t get how people could ask for more michael myers. I mean, he’s scary with his mask, but he’s not a real “monster”, he’s just a murderer! Just like the one in Scream! If you want a villain to return over and over, then Jason’s the man! He is almost identical to Michael as a character, but he only is immortal!

  • Kid_Icarus

    October 26, 2011 at 6:33 am

Kombatgod: Wouldn’t you say Myers is immortal too?

  • Murdock129

    October 26, 2011 at 6:50 am

Gotta agree with kid_icarus there, he is equally immortal, and in facts works better than Jason in the coming back over and over idea, Michael Myers is like a Phantom, the living embodiment of evil, Jason’s just a zombie in a hockey mask whose incredibly hard to kill (or if you read Freddy vs Jason vs Ash, he’s just another deadite)

  • BlackPipe33

    October 26, 2011 at 7:19 am

I think they didn’t change his looks after he burned, because they didnt want him to look like Freddy, don’t you think? But that’s just what i would have thought as a director

  • mactruck81

    October 26, 2011 at 7:26 am

Michael Myers is human, in my opinion, But he also is the embodiment of mind over matter. Whater complusion that drives Michael enabled him to perform super human feats. Such as suriviving gun shots, burns, falls, and anythign else that would kill us “normal” people. Eventually he can and will die of simply old age, there isnt anything that can prevent that.

As far as halloween 4 is concerned, i believe it is a worthy sequen to the Halloween franchise, it was decent suspense, makes good use of the dark, and has some interesting death scenes.

I do believe that Myers looks rubbish in this one, he looks to smooth and clean. His jumpsuit is pretty clean even though it was dirty when the mechanic wore it. Did he do some laundry before he starting on his spree? Imagine michael myers standing in his boxers at a laundry matt measuring some detergent.

What i never got is how Michael automatically knows who his relatives are. He has never met the little girl yet knows who and where she is. Though they do hint at a psychic link.

Lastly i think it should be noted the little girl in this movie plays the best friend (sherrif’s daughter) in the zombie remake.

Overall decent movie, and great review James!

  • October 26, 2011 at 8:33 am

The should have just changed the mask from white to brown, because its a piece of shit. Not NEARLY as bad as 5 though, and only slightly better than the one used in 8.

By the end of this one, Loomis is just about as nutty as Michael…and that is just great- with each movie he is closer and closer to the edge.

  • kgn340

    October 26, 2011 at 8:56 am

Yeah … Only Michael Myers would bring a gun to a knife fight.

    Oh wait .!.

  • Mr. Stark

    October 26, 2011 at 10:08 am

I love how they made you think he was gonna shoot her, then he stabs her with the freakin gun! lol He was probably meant to shoot her, but someone had the great idea to have Micheal stab her with it! Kind of like how in Raiders with the guy with the big sword. Indy was supposed to fight that guy, but Ford was sick, and the choreography wasn’t going so well, so Ford suggested he just shoot him.

It’s funny cause Laurie Strode is IN Halloween H20, and the beginning of Resurrection. It’d be like Sarah Conner returning to Teminator 5 after they already declared her dead in Terminator 3. Actually, they should do that just to mess with the audience! lol That’s another film series that messed up after 2 great movies. Im curious to see where they take 5, but honestly, it ended after the director’s cut of 2 to me. Cameron shoulda re-acquired the rights to the series, re-released T2 in 3D with the coda ending, just to state,’Hey. It’s over. They saved the world. Let it end.’ Like I said, Ill be curious to see where they take that series.

On a side note, I keep hearing about a possible Halloween 3 with Rob Zombie returning, this time in 3D. Anybody know anything further about that?

  • October 26, 2011 at 10:08 am

The most powerful medicine ever created by mankind; Gross Profits. If you don’t get enough of the medicine, a seemingly healthy individual can die off and never be heard from again. If you get plenty of the medicine, a completely dead and resolved person can come back from the dead over and over and over, no matter how many times you kill him!

Let me just say that this sequel shouldn’t have been made either. Halloween 3 sucked in my opinion, they should have left it at number 1, or, at MOST number 2. Number 3 had a couple interesting ideas, but was poorly executed and just wasn’t scary at all. Number 4, oh boy, bringing back Myers was a horrible idea. He looked like shit, and didn’t he get his eyes gouged out? Shouldn’t he be blind? Last I checked, eyeballs don’t grow back. And why did they keep him alive anyway? He’s a murderer! So they take the time to save the life of the murderer, give him skin grafts, keep him on lifesupport despite Laurie being the next of kin who could have had them pull the plug at any time. Not to mention, did ANYBODY file a police report? Wouldn’t he have been tried in absencia? Sure, he’s insane, but clearly he’s too dangerous to keep locked up, this is evident from the first movie, he’ll just escape and kill again.

Now that rant is over, Jamie COULD have been the next Michael Myers, and that would have been a GREAT idea. It would have been a happy medium between anthology and neverending retarded sequels. Imagine that the family has some kind of vulnerability to evil, Michael had it, but was killed, now Jamie has it and it would have been cool to have a female “Michael Myers.” Come to think of it, can you think of any iconic slasher villains that are female? Jason’s mom. That’s it. There ought to be more, but that might deviate a little too far from the misogynistic slasher formula that’s been put forth by all these movies. And don’t tell me that because there’s a final girl in these movies that it suddenly should be lauded as an example of feminism in film because it isn’t.

    Stepping off my soapbox now..

Michael looks so awful in this one. The best part of this movie is how freaking mean the other school kids are to Jamie, “Jamie’s mother is dead! Jamie’s an orphan, Jamie’s an orphan!!” What little bastards.

    October 26, 2011 at 11:24 am

Well still…that’s how these type of serial killers work, and if Jason would show up with a shotgun I wouldn’t be surprised if he would stab someone aswell with it.
I find the Halloween saga worse than Friday the 13th, maybe I was raised on the second one, and yeah nothing can stop Jason. But there is a moment I say that this motherfucker Myers is a damn good killer…when it’s time for two first movies and of course my favourite Rob Zombie remakes, a bit different view, more action…but its Rob Zombie, and t me hes myers was the best ever.

Lol, when we used to watch this as kids my friends and I joked that the mask in this film looked like Michael Jackson. IMO, only the mask used in part 6 was the closest to the original. Then again, I haven’t seen any since H2O, nor the remakes.

Hey, James. Yeah, the premise and the whole idea of Michael and Loomis still being alive is iffy at best but hey, what’re ya gonna do? It’s a horror movie and shit, man… the Frankenstein monster came back time and time again as well.

With that being said I’m glad you came around at the end of the review. Halloween 4 is, IMO the second best of the series behind the original. Once you just let yourself get into the movie it’s superb. I mean, the atmosphere, the build up, the great characters (Rachel and Jamie are so extremely likeable. You really want them to survive), and like you said, the pacing… wow. The finale in the borded up house is so good. Clausterphobic, scary, just really, really well done. One of my absolute favorite aspects of the entire series. And again, Rachel and Jamie are just SUCH great characters. I really liked them and was rooting for them the whole time.

Yes, the series took a turn for the worse after this one. There really are no movies worth watching after part 4 except H20 and in my opinion (I know I’m in the minority) Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2, I thought that movie was excellent. It was so strange and… different.

Anyway. Great review on Halloween 4, I’m glad you dug it.

About the video – nice work as always James – I’m still looking forward to the movie, I guess the Nerd will deal with some horror motives too. After all, wasn’t this the type of film art you were so drawn into from your first days on? We’ll see.

Now I admit – I’ve never seen Halloween 4… but when Michael used the gun to stab her i just had to think about this:

It’s Hellsing, an Anime and in my opionen the best of its kind. It’s gory and over the top yes but it’s also very poetic, stylish and has some great characters. Anybody who enjoyed the Anime scenes from Kill Bill and has an hour of spare time should check this out. It has a complete eligible fanbase and is well worth the time if you ask me.

I’ve always felt the same way about Micheal Myers mask. And it always bothered me that they had Jamie kill her step-mom when the fifth movie went back to having Michael kill people while Jamie was still the victim. If she wasn’t going to be the killer, than what was the point of having her kill her step-mom?

Also, stabbing with a gun makes me wonder if Micheal knows how to use one.

Didn’t he get his eyes slashed out? How can he see? I can buy the whole survive getting burned thing, because Anakin Skywalker could as well, but MM should be blind now which would’ve been a cool idea just like in the Frankenstien franchise. I kinda agree with James on how it wouldv’e been a cool concept for MM to have a new look but unlike him i can buy the whole surviving third degree burns thing cause i have heard of stranger things happening in real life. The only jumping the shark survival story i can’t buy is King Kong surviving falling off the twin towers in King Kong Lives. Which isn’t as bad a film as everyone says it is but it does nukes the fridge ten times over notheless.

It’s worth pointing out that people have actually survived such explosions before, especially since you never see where Loomis is during the actual explosion. For all we know he was blown through the wall and avoided most of the actual blast and fire but at least he does show a decent amount of damage from it.

That said I agree the mask in part 4 was very cheap. In later movies the masks started getting better again but still they were never as good as in the original two and that includes in Rob Zombie remakes. On a side note Rob Zombie’s remakes aren’t bad as stand alone films but as remakes they suck. Seriously throughout the filming process of part 1 he said he was sticking as close to Carpenter’s original version as possible then we find that Michael’s formerly white upper middle class family is now trailer trash of the year award winners. That’s just the tip of the ice burg too but I don’t want to give any real spoilers for those who haven’t seen them yet.

  • TacoKnight

This for my money is the best Halloween sequel. I liked H20 quite a bit but in it’s own way it kinda felt more like a reboot, even though it is a direct sequel, the Halloween series is notorious for just throwing out elements from previous movies. Why is everyone giving the mask so much shit?.. the mask works.. This is the return of michale myers he has to start fresh… find himself a new suit and a new mask. I think the crisp clean cutt look of the mask actually makes the character scarier and the shot where he sits up from behind the bed and looks over at Jamie not only is a neat tribute to the scene from the first where he sits up behind Laurie at the end. I know the whole shotgun kill is stupid but after all this is a man who puts his thumb through someone’s skull in the opening and crushes another one’s with his bare hands.. OK Michale Myers is a fucking supernatural force… we’ve known that sense the end of the first one. Let the shotgun kill go people… it’s a fucking great scene anyway.. we know it’s michale the whole time but when he gets up from the rocking chare and the music starts going… ahh yeah… that’s some good shit. Also i always noted how the authorities behavior is more intelligent and realistic in this movie. The cops don’t just laugh Loomis off they instantly go about instilling a curfew (which everyone is apparently breaking) and start looking for Michale. The ending is awesome… best ending next to the first. For part 5 (seeing as they pretty much had to make it. there’s money to be made people) they should have just completely gone to a whole new setting and characters.. keep it in haddonfield but move away from the whole Jamie angle. it would have been hard to start over from scratch with a new killer that’s also female, so they should have just done nothing with it and let 4 stand on it’s own as a great little chiller. 5 sucked for multiple reasons but it gets off to such a shitty start with the fact that they ignored such a great ending that it never really had a chance which is to bad because the little girl did a great job and having michale stalk a traumatized child is even more chilling them him going after a bunch of horny run of the mill teenagers.

It’s good has some likable characters and Dr. Loomis looks like he’s been through literal Hell, but the Don Post mask wasn’t frieghtening, to me Michael always looked as if he was constipated. The straight forward kill his niece because she’s his family, although entertaining it’s still nothing special. I never cared for the sudden out of nowhere Laurie is mike’s lil tyke sis side plot, to those unaware was only done because Carpenter was on drugs and saw Star Wars. To me and many other fans this really takes off the tension of the film and as you’ve said the demystifying of Michael’s character by giving him a clear motive. Not only that but a lot of the suspense and oveall tone of the original film has lost it’s rythym with this.

O yeah, that stabbed with a gun thing’ll getcha. You know, in the same year as that movie came out, Pumpkinhead stabbed someone with a rifle, too. So who ripped off who? Check out my review of the film at adamloewen.com Junk Reviews

I still say the three is what ended a chance at the anthology. Plus, alot of the third felt way more cheesy and out of character from the first two.

This fits in a way for the brand new anthology series, but again, it shouldn’t have had numarical continuity, as it feels like the troll series instead of something good. The only connection are the androids’ characteristics. They, in a way, replace Myers and act similar to Myers.

Still, they never had to give up or make another Michael Myers film at all. It was the third that led them to crave more.

Okay, wait a sec. Maybe I need to go back and watch this installment again, but I distinctly remember this film ending with Jaime getting kidnapped from the old Myers house. She was used and bait and it failed. I forget the exact details, but I remember Michael somehow got past the trap, took the niece and Loomis ran into the room to find it empty, realizing then that Michael had taken his niece. What I don’t remember was the police station ending.
Am I missing something? Was there another cut of this movie? The version I saw was a VHS rented from a store. Everything else I remember seems to be correct (the falling down the shaft, the dynamite, the hermit, the sister being killed, the barn, and the baiting at the Myers house), so how is this last detail different? It can’t be that I’m remembering the beginning of #6, after Jaime is already abducted, since I’ve never actually watched any version of H6, having heard how bad it was. The last one I saw before H20, Resurrection and the Rob Zombie remakes was H5.
Seriously, am I going crazy here remembering an ending that didn’t happen?

James, you read my mind. I have always thought that the opening credits for this movie were amazing. It sets the perfect Hallwoeen tone and I always found it creepy. I also always liked the reverend in the truck with Loomis. I loved how Loomis listened to him as he felt a connection with him. This is also one of the only times in the series that Loomis actually had some fun; he smiles when the reverend starts singing “Shall We Gather at the River”. It’s always good to see Loomis smile because of all the hell he goes through.

You know, they should just sterilize this family. Michael keeps coming back and so many people have to die, while the ones he is trying to off end up surviving. Or better yet, just sacrifice everyone remaining in the blood line. Think of all the lives that could have been saved if they had just tossed Laurie to Michael in part 2.

Horrible flick, all the sequels are bad from this point on though.
All horror series suffer from bad sequels, but I feel the Halloween and Nightmare series are the worst of the big hitters.

for me, the classic and official trilogy is 1, 2 and 4. i love these ones, but i think all the others are awful. they should have just stopped the series after this one.

Love the Halloween series and these reviews, but I think you’re being a little unfair bashing people who don’t like Halloween III. I think if it had been released just as “Season of the Witch” and this one had been H3, people would like it way better but as is, it’s just unwelcome and shocking to anyone who expected more Michael Myers. Like, what if you went and saw a Friday the 13th movie and it was about vampires? You’d be pissed off.

I’m not too big on the “Halloween” films, but this entry gets my vote for being the best sequel. It’s well-made, and even the acting is solid. It’s the most entertaining out of all the sequels.

Yeah, if anything after being in a coma for 10 years, he should be scrawny with atrophied muscles.

Guess they didn’t want to make him a zombie and resemble the then more popular Jason.

Jamie Lloyd? Jamie Lee reference much?

Stop after 4? Nope, gotta milk the franchise into suck.

Ha! I like the Meyers sequals and remake sequals. I don’t disagree that 3 is highly underrated, and that it would be great to see a Halloween themed anthology. I wish they would do both.

i just realized, with the joke “does he shoot people with a knife?”, James should have followed up with a clip from a MST3K special from 1998 where they riffed clips from the latest hollywood films, and did a scene from Halloween H2O:

    “My brother killed my sister”
    “How’d he do that?”
“With a really big, sharp kitchen knife.”
    CROW: He shot her!

Does anyone know the full name of that version of the Halloween theme that plays during the opening? It’s so amazing, I want to hear the full version.

I personally think this is the best Halloween out of the ones I’ve seen. 1 and 2 were a little too slow for slashers imo and 3 was garbage (no, not because Michael wasn’t in it). 3 had a stupid story, it was boring, the scene where the guy is tied up with the skull mask is laughable and the climax sucks. I also don’t get why the one woman got shot with a laser, while whoever’s wearing the mask doesn’t get shot.
