Oh, nevermind, I see what you’re referring to now.

    August 16, 2011 at 5:47 pm

Usually I’d be one the of the first people to accuse James of “selling out” like so many other youtubers these days begging for money for new computers, cameras, etc.

But I wanna see this fucking movie, so I don’t consider this to be the case. I hope we as fans can all get behind James, donate what we can and get the ball rolling on what is sure to be an awesome flick.

  • August 16, 2011 at 5:48 pm

Awesome. You should have had Mike working the phones behind you, like on one of those old PBS pledge drives.

You got it. I’ll make a donation at some point in the next few days. It may not be for much but, hey, you’ve given me enough laughs over the years that I feel like I owe you one. Good luck.

I wonder what the new game review is gonna be???

  • TheProfessor

    August 16, 2011 at 5:55 pm

Have you considered giving credit to people who make large donations? I have seen in a lot of independent fundraising that a person who (for example) gives 200 bucks gets thier name in the credits, 500 bucks gets your name in the credits and an autographed dvd of the movie, etc.

I’ve seen it work before. Just an idea…

  • Nautrup

    August 16, 2011 at 5:55 pm

Have you considered throwing the AVGN Movie Project on http://www.kickstarter.com? Thinking that both the AVGN Movie and all the Fans could benefit from it…

  • NKW160

    August 16, 2011 at 5:57 pm

I personally feel like since James has kept the videos on this site free and has kept me entertained for countless hours it’s the least I could do to help out when I get paid. Thanks for the update man.

  • August 16, 2011 at 5:58 pm

i think i know what the next review is gonna be …if you been keeping up with james’s appearances you might know too

  • August 16, 2011 at 5:58 pm

u talked about going around the country and stuff for casting. how does that work exactly?

  • August 16, 2011 at 6:00 pm

You should definitely put it on http://www.kickstarter.com I’ve seen nothing but amazing support from fans on that site. Something about the way it’s set up makes you want to donate. XD

I can possibly donate upwards of $500, but I’d like to have some credit to me if that happens. Trust me, I love you James, and I want this movie up and going as much as everyone, but surely you can understand why I’d want credit.

  • August 16, 2011 at 6:13 pm

Also, totally looking forward to the Cinemassacre DVD. I’ll be buying that in a heartbeat!

    August 16, 2011 at 6:16 pm

ATTENTION PEOPLE OF CINEMASSACRE! Do not be a damn cheap skate! Donate a dollar! Support the movie NOW!

  • August 16, 2011 at 6:18 pm

Would be cool if you set this up as a Kickstarter project and have bonuses for people that donate. http://www.kickstarter.com/

  • August 16, 2011 at 6:18 pm

Hey James, here is an idea to help expand donations. Have an account set up for people text to to donate $1, $5, or $10 (depending on what the person can afford). If you set up a number to text AVGN 1, AVGN 5, or AVGN 10 you would get a lot more donations that way because not everyone has a credit card, such as me. I’d donate but I have no credit card to do so, but I do have a cell. I think you should think about that and put it to use. I really want to be a part of this film, and since I can’t offer you anything in talent other than writing I’d like to help you out financially. And just to correct you a slight, you have mentioned your PayPal donation button once or twice in your AVGN videos. And don’t think of it as begging. We love your work and we want to keep it going so we’re all willing to keep helping out wherever we can. : )

  • August 16, 2011 at 6:19 pm

Oh and one more thing, when is the 5th vol. of the AVGN episodes coming out?

  • elrubo138

    August 16, 2011 at 6:20 pm

About to send some money your way, James. 25 bucks isn’t much, but I hope it helps. I love everything you’ve done. You’re the fuckin’ man! Give my regards to Mike. He’s pretty bad ass too. Have a great one James and best of luck to you!

  • August 16, 2011 at 6:21 pm

    1) I wish I was currently employed, and 2) I wish I had money to donate… well, like you said, theoretically if everyone donated a dollar… okay, I’ll go donate $1.

  • August 16, 2011 at 6:23 pm

    Haha, Big Rigs.

  • August 16, 2011 at 6:23 pm

There’s no shame in asking for a little money James. I know how much films can cost.

I’m really surprised there’s no interest from the major film corps. Here is a chance to produce a very unique film that could bring in a lot of money for them. I think our film studios are a bit out of touch.

  • Maja

    August 16, 2011 at 6:23 pm

I recently stumbled across your AVGN videos on youtube an fell in love with them right away. They are so much fun for me to watch, even though I’m not a big videogameperson. That’s why you’ve just received another 10 bucks or to be more precise 7,14 € from Germany. So keep up the good work! Greetings form your fans in Germany!

I’m hoping to donate, real soon. So, until then, keep up the great work James and I know your movie will be awesome.

  • August 16, 2011 at 6:28 pm

You’re welcome big guy πŸ˜‰ and donate i shall. By the way James, I was wondering if it would ever be possible to see a dvd release of monster madness? I doubt it considering all the footage used, but damn would that be cool. or at least made available for download off cinemassacre? or if nothing else a playlist of monster madness 2010? damn i love october.

  • August 16, 2011 at 6:28 pm

Seriously though, kickstarter has the potential to create some serious buzz, which is invaluable if you’re going the indie route. Please consider it. I’ll certainly be donating whatever I can whenever I can afford to do so, but a kickstarter would legitimize the thing to outsiders and get more eyes on the project… Maybe even the gaming press at large! Who knows!

    Good luck duder,

  • Metaljoe1977

    August 16, 2011 at 6:28 pm

After reading some of the comments, I think you should look into the whole kickstarter thing and maybe even create a facebook group page for people to spread awareness.

  • August 16, 2011 at 6:32 pm

I will donate to your movie when you come through with that stool sample.

  • August 16, 2011 at 6:42 pm

Definitely donating, especially after the video. James’s humility & warmth shines through… sort of guy you could have a beer & Michelangelo Pizza with regardless of how rich/famous he was!

  • sirmidor

    August 16, 2011 at 6:44 pm

    i’m pretty sure it’s metroid.

it was the 25 anniversary of the game some days ago and the metroid franchise has a crazy history of getting great reviews, but not selling.

then the franchise was given to retro studios, who made 4 failed projects before getting the metroid franchise, but for some reason Nintendo believed in them and finally they gave us the brilliant metroid prime series, from which the first part was the 2nd best selling game on the gamecube.

the other parts didn’t sell as well because every time a new metroid prime came out, a new halo game also came out.

then of course metroid being given to team ninja for other M was strange, since you wouldn’t expect it.

i wouldn’t be surprised if it was about metroid.

  • thefro

    August 16, 2011 at 6:58 pm

Agree that you need to do a kickstarter.com fund drive for whatever $$$ amount you need to raise. Have some perks so that everyone who donates something gets access to a special page where they can get exclusive stuff from the movie. Everyone who donates say $X gets a DVD, $3x gets it signed by the cast, etc. You can have the folks hang out on set or get a premiere invite or get signed props, etc for different funding levels.

i fell in love with metroid when i got this game called metroid fuzion, then i was like ” holy shit i never knew a side scroller shooting game could be so fun”. then i later bought metroid prime 3, no disapoint. it was pure awsome. thats the only two i got. not much of a nintendo fan im a sony guy. got a wii though because of smash bros and since the wii is fun. i dont play 360 unless im at a friends house.

    August 16, 2011 at 9:44 pm

James, its best to get back to basics with the avgn videos, assuming that you still plan on making them. No fancy special effects. Just you and the recording along with the wit and humor that you bring to the videos. That’s what makes you the best. Its not the effects, its your AVGN persona that makes you fascinating. Going fancy means longer production time and more expenses. Think back to basics such as the Silver Surfer video. Keep up the good work and good luck in your endeavors. Take care.

http://www.indiegogo.com/ is a great resource for raising money for indie projects.

I’m not sure how often you spend time reading through the comments, and you might already know, but my friends and other projects i’ve been involved with have extensively used it for fundraising independent projects. Take a look if you don’t know about it!

You’ve given us so much great entertainment over the years and, to your point, never asked for anything. How could we refuse?

I have one simple ask. Sometimes it’s hard to find out where you will be appearing in person. I need my fucking powerglove signed by the nerd damnit! I’ve missed you 3 times already. It would be handy if you posted this to your RSS feed.

  • August 16, 2011 at 11:22 pm

I didn’t look at all the comments, but did you consider using kickstarter.com for fundraising? Might be able to offer, movie credit, DVDs or other merch as premiums.

  • August 16, 2011 at 11:27 pm

Donated $20. I’ve gotten a lot of entertainment from Cinemassacre.com.

  • Jarnor23

    August 17, 2011 at 12:10 am

Everyone see if you can send $5 (that’s all I could swing right now). If everyone sent $5 (skip a latte or two) he could fund the movie.

  • WestBuiltAMountain

    August 17, 2011 at 12:12 am

Donated – but might I suggest you guys start a forum for a few things?

1.) So you can keep us up to date easily.

2.) So us AVGN fans have a place to talk about the videos/happenings.

3.) So we don’t have to use a comment section that gets bogged down and is related only to a video.

Hell. I’ll donate again if you need money to get one together.

  • August 17, 2011 at 12:18 am

EPIC! I love your stuff James, I’ll gladly donate as soon as my next paycheck comes. Which should be this Friday, certainly deserve it since you’ve given out so much stuff for free! Keep up the wonderful work, I look forward to Monster Madness! I love Monster Madness!

I can understand it feels weird to ask πŸ˜› looking forward to the movie!

James, not only have I bought DVD’s 1-4 of the AVGN series, and not only am I ready to buy the fifth series as soon as you decide to release that, but as soon as I get paid this Friday I intend to donate directly to your movie!

    Best of Luck!

  • ZhannTk

    August 17, 2011 at 12:50 am

Monster Maddness 2011! That’s worth a donation in itself. In fact is awesome to see you still doing so much despite the amount of work you have to put in, into the movie.

Also don’t fill weird asking for money, that’s basically what everyone who is on http://www.kickstarter.com/ does!

  • JKaudio

    August 17, 2011 at 12:54 am

I just made a donation for the movie in memory of my good friend Josh. He and I used to bond over AVGN episodes. I’ve never left a message (or even registered on here) before, so gotta throw in the obligatory, “Love it! Keep it going!” NES Nightmare on Elm Street is still my favorite episode.

  • August 17, 2011 at 1:35 am

You should really look into KickStarter. SMBC theater used it and got a TON more money then they were expecting. It also uses Amazon instead of PayPal.

I don’t post on here a lot and I didn’t sign up until I think a year ago but I’ve been a huge fan since 2006 when you were still pretty underground. I gave 30 bucks, and honestly, for all of the entertainment you have given for absolutely free it’s a drop in the bucket and I wish I could give you more. Money is tight because of college, but hopefully by the time the Volume 1-4 Pack is released I can pick that up.

Good luck with your movie, and I am absolutely thrilled to hear you plan Monster Madness 2011.

  • August 17, 2011 at 2:00 am

Hey james I doubt everyone will give a dollar (I think maybe 1-3% which has it works with in app purchases on iphone games). Maybe you should have some sort of thing to encourage people to give. For example if they give 100+ or 50 or 10 etc.

  • August 17, 2011 at 2:11 am

Hey really had to leave a comment after seeing that. Just wanted to say i’m going to make a donation as soon as i can, im getting all my friends over here on our deployment into all the videos you’ve been making because i’ve been a huge fan for a while. keep up the phenominal work and thank you.

  • AnKun

    August 17, 2011 at 2:13 am

Oh James, I’d GLADLY donate $20 to you, but I don’t use PayPal because people who manage PayPal apparently think that we, here in Russia, are living like some wild papua tribe, except in winter, in wooden houses, surrounded with bears, vodka, and without internet, and that such dumb apes like we are won’t need PayPal. So we cannot create accounts.

  • Grampa

    August 17, 2011 at 2:14 am

Hey James, not sure how many of these comments you read through with your busy schedule. But first off I’d like to thank you for all your hard work and dedication you’ve put into the site and the videos. I’m a huge fan and I watch nerd episodes every night, over and over again. I’ve been wanting to contact you with a request, and figured this would be a great time to do so. Like I said I watch your videos every night, and was wondering if you could incorporate a video player that plays a random nerd episode one after another, like what you had for the Monster Madness last year. In return I’ve donated to the cause, and I’m also a graphic artist with degree from Fullsail University, and would like nothing more than to help in some way for the film. Well if you read this, thanks for your time and keep up the good work!

  • August 17, 2011 at 2:19 am

Donated $20. (I probably owe you more.)

Thank you for asking. I would not have donated otherwise. Sometimes I forget that I am not paying for the premium content you share with us. (Yes, I know I pay by watching commercials and buying the DVD’s.)

    Make the movie.

Hi James. am a huge fan…

i sew everyone of the avgn videos and most of the other stuff multiple times. i think you have a real telnet and i wish you the best of luck with the movie and the site. i gave what i could for your movie but i recommend you try the Kickstarter site, I’ve heard of a lot of indie projects that got off the ground thanks to that site.

    Keep up the awesome work!

  • ru40342

    August 17, 2011 at 3:29 am

Dude, here’s a better idea (imo)

Instead of asking for donations, how bout set up a trust fund under the name of cinemassacre. Whoever deposit money into the trust fund will be a member or investor of the trust fund (sorta like mutual fund). Larger the deposit, larger the share they get.

After the movie’s done, if it can generate profit, it will redistribute back to investor or retained for future project(s).

    Just my opinion lol.

  • August 17, 2011 at 11:28 am

I agree with HKK Kickstarter is a great way to get funding and will also get you to more fans to help out then just your site James. The Minecraft Documentary got completely funded from Kickstarter and they were asking for like $150,000 and got $210,000. So James I think Kickstarter would be a great way to fund this movie if your having financial issues with trying to make this movie. Best of luck.

    August 17, 2011 at 12:01 pm

I know, you’re right. He’s already begging for money. It’s sad. The movie will never get made; I’m already sure of that. Just give up James.

  • August 17, 2011 at 12:07 pm

People who think this is “begging” are idiots. ALL independent movies have to struggle to secure finances. ALL of them. James fans are the equivalent of investors on an indi film. This is nothing unusual.

Unless you think all directors pay for all of their movies out of pocket? In which case you are HUGELY mistaken.

  • Athanas

    August 17, 2011 at 12:10 pm

  • Bick Benedict

    August 17, 2011 at 12:11 pm

I sounded rough, but I was being realistic. I just think James should focus on his other work, not on this huge project that costs too much money to make. I think he should give up on the project and focus on other stuff that he doesn’t have to ask money for. He’s doing like six things at once; where is he going to find the time to make a movie–let alone finance it.

Ashamed to be a “silent fan”, first comment ever.

Thank you for all the efforts and all the videos, I can’t remember how many dozens of times I’ve watched pretty much every single one of them (and no matter how bad my day was, I always ended up laughing my ass off).

I sent you a little token of encouragement from Switzerland and Italy alike πŸ˜‰

I hope I can get my first paycheck in time for a more consistent donation before it’s closing time πŸ™‚

Just a little suggestion from a big fan: just some time ago, smbc did something similar, but they used http://www.kickstarter.com/ as a fund raising platform; I know you want to keep it as indie as possible, but I think this would actually be way more practical, while still keeping it very indie πŸ™‚ (you could even give thank-you gifts at the biggest donors).

Hope that my little contribution helps. COWA-FUCKIN-BONGA!!! πŸ˜€

    Greetings from Barcelona, Spain!

First comment, first donation, glad to see there’s fans all over the planet.

Having discovered the AVGN back in ’05 and having enjoyed the episodes through my college years can only be adjetified as priceless. So giving in some money for the movie is something I can feel very proud of, besides being glad as fuck!

    Hoping it all works out!

Just made you a small donation James. Wish I could do more – I’m pretty broke but like you said, it a lot of people give a little…

By the way…I also have some sealed games laying around that I’d be willing to donate. Maybe if you put these in an eBay auction to raise money specifically for your movie, I bet they’d bring it some decent cash. Anyway if you ever end up accepting donations like that, please let us know.

Best of luck and thank you for all your hard work and dedication to vintage and modern gaming. πŸ™‚

Over the years, this website and all of your videos have really grown on me. I love the feeling of checking out the site to find a new video waiting to be watched. Your dedication and hard work for the fans does not go unnoticed, and there is no question in my mind that you deserve a donation.

Good luck with production, and enjoy making that dream of having a full length film to call your own come true.

  • August 18, 2011 at 1:24 am

This is my first donation ever, isnΒ΄t much but I hope that you can use it. I just felt that I want to help a little with the AVGN movie, I wanted to know that I did something to help it make it real.

I looh forward for the next AVGN episode like it was a Christmas present, and I also look for Monster Madness and actually anything you do. So this is a way to say thank you

    August 18, 2011 at 1:43 am

Hey man, I really wish I could donate now, but my birthday’s tomorrow, and I can’t get money. :C But hey, if I can get some money for my birthday, I may be able to lend a few bucks. C; But anyways, I would be more honored than anything else to be in your movie, and I loved classic gaming long before I even first saw you; but I’m only a soon-to-be 15 year old, and I live in Texas, which is pretty far from Pennsylvania. Besides, there are probably better actors out there anyways. 😐

But anywways, best of luck with the movie, and I hope it’s the blockbuster of 2012 (or whenever its gonna be released :|)!

For all the ones saying that James is begging for money: How can you be so selfish? James has been giving us free entertainment for years. Now he is asking for donations to make a movie for us, and you are talking crap about him, saying that he is begging for money and that the movie is going to suck? You should all be ashamed of yourselves and not watch James’s videos anymore.

How does one go about getting a part in the movie? I live in Bethlehem PA and you’re located in New Jersey, so I could probably get a day or two off from work to do something. I’m trying to get into voice acting, so I have to take an acting course in the spring, but I’ve done some crappy videos with my friends, so I can act on camera. Maybe I can play some nerdy douchebag who’s obsessed with Superman 64 or something.

Hey James. I’ve been a big fan ever since the double vision episodes, since that is when I first heard of you. I would give you a nice donation if the renaissance festival weren’t in town because I usually buy things there. But afterwards, I can definitely give you a donation. Also, despite me not being an actor, I would love to be involved in the movie even if just a background character, but just an idea incase you were looking for some background people. I live in Pennsylvania near the monroeville mall, so it wouldn’t be that long of a drive for me if you are shooting in PA or NJ. Good luck mate. πŸ˜‰

    August 18, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Sent you 10 $ to help out. I love your AVGN videos. My buddy and I used to a rent game every weekend and try to finish it. Nintendo games as a rule – we would try out games that have wicked covers, awesome gfx on the back good write ups in Nintendo Power magazine and once in a while we would get a gem, but mostly end up with stinkers. So many times dying cheap deaths to a broken game but struggling forward all nignt to finish it (cause that game reantal money came from one of our parents for doing chores and we werent gonna waste it), we actually finished and played many of the games you have reviewed. Really hilarious how you pick out specific things like Festers wave gun missing enemies and the TMNT turtles game and the underwater bits being impossible and respawning enemies in coutless games or the birds in Ninja Gaiden lol that spawn as you try to jump ! Wish you the best of luck with the movie.

Now that we’re getting all emotional here, I think it’s safe to say that your videos have always cheered me up and really made a difference in my life. I always look forward to your new stuff, and quite frankly I adore you. You’re my hero, James! Never quit doing what you’re doing :3 I’ll always be with you 100% (as with thousands of other adoring fans, I suppose) and if you’re ever looking for a teenage actress in your film and drop by my location, I’m your gal ;D

    August 19, 2011 at 5:47 am

Don’t feed the trolls, guys. CW is either playing you like a fiddle, or is too ignorant to accept any counter-arguments anyway. Just ignore him. Same goes for Bick Benedict, if he wants to leave because James won’t do things to suit his narrow tastes then we should all welcome his loss. Good riddance to selfish cunts.

$10 donated, and there will probably be more seeing as how so many have been donating upwards of $20 and I can easily afford to match or improve on that.

I have boughten two of your DVD’s James. As you can see all those videos for free in the Internet that was my donation to you.
I don’t have a PayPal, but I would donate you if it was possible to use SMS system. Like you send an SMS and that’s it. I know I have to spend more money and you don’t get every dollar that I donate, but still.
I don’t trust credit cards, so yeah, but I am your big fan and I think you are one of the most talented creatures ever existed and will ever exist in the whole Universe. I am not kidding.

So “The Room (2003)” gets a budget of 6.000.000$ but the AVGN Movie doesnΒ΄t? What kind of sick twisted world is this…

  • August 19, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Did you ever think about doing a kickstarter campaign for this? Offering different levels of incentive for different donation amounts? I think you could get some pretty heavy interest. Take a look at what some others do and look into doing that. Ive seen some movies happen through there and basically they’d do something like “donate $50, get a DVD copy of the movie signed by this this and this along with this” or “donate $5000 and get a walk on roll”…..really simple shit, but people get into it.

Obviously the intent of the incentive is to get larger donations, pay for whatever it is you’re offering, and end up with a nice chunk towards the project. Seriously worth checking out for what you are doing James. I’d DEFINITELY throw $50 in to end up with a signed copy of the movie on DVD as soon as its ready and I know I’m not the only one

Plus you know that shit is only going to cost you $5 bucks to make (like Truckapiller…..$59.95, you know that only cost $10 bucks to make?)

  • MireMare

    August 19, 2011 at 1:20 pm

God damn, James Rolfe is awesome. First of all, he takes time out to thank people for donating (which, for some reason, is kind of rare), but he’s also really, really keeping his fans in the loop about the movie. That’s impressive. Take $10, sir. Were I not about to embark on university studies, it’d be a little more.

    August 20, 2011 at 9:27 pm

Good luck on the film. It’ll be interesting to learn what camera choice you guys decide to go with. While the Canon 5d Mark II is cost effective, the look of its images are distinctly Canon – which isn’t necessarily bad, but whenever I see a film shot on a Canon, I immediately think “Oh, a Canon,” so thoughts of the camera’s inexpensiveness creeps into your mind and you start thinking “amateur.” The RED camera can produce an image that rivals film and if you rent, will still be very cost-effective.

Nope, never donated to anything so completely non-essential, but had to drop a very modest couple of dollars this time. Appreciate the videos, and even if a movie never comes to fruition, I like the idea of AVGN, and the videos are great late-night internet garbage- easily worth a few bucks.

  • snowdomo

    August 21, 2011 at 6:38 am

Why are you even here saying this, Calavera… to help us see reason ? Well, if that helps, I’m 100% satisfied with donating a few bucks to one of the man that truly deserves it. It’s not only for the movie, but for everything he’s done. From all the interviews I’ve seen, the way he talks, his taste in movies, etc… James is someone I can really relate to and I’m absolutely sure that this is all to make a better movie in the end, not to satisfy the needs of a greedy bastard. Now for your last statement, Calavera, you should be the one feeling foolish, no offense.

    August 21, 2011 at 1:25 pm

    @Bick Benedict

You DO realize that James Rolfe isn’t just some geek who started doing internet videos, right? He’s a filmmaker who actually went to a pretty good Art/Film school. The AVGN thing started as a joke that he made ONLY for his friends to see, they talked him into making another one and posting it online, it got a lot of hits, so he started doing more of them. He never intended to do this for years, as he has said himself many times.

Did you not catch the part in the video where he said that while he’s still doing the preliminary stuff, you know, casting, financing, scouting locations, getting equipment, etc., he’s also doing some AVGN episodes to last the rest of the year. The key phrase being WHILE HE HAS TIME to do it. And as far as Monster Madness goes, he’s been working on that since the spring. It’s probably pretty much finished by this point. But, the key thing to pay attention to in all of that, is that what he said originally stands: once he actually starts filming the AVGN movie, he WON’T have time to be making a bunch of webisodes. He’ll be pretty much putting all of his time, money, and focus into that.

What I don’t get, is that you say you’re “just being realistic”, that James should just stick to the little videos for the internet that we can all get for free (but cost him time and money), and NOT try to make a film? You do realize that he’s been making films since he was a kid right? And that that is what he’s wanted to do his whole life: make movies. Perhaps you’re under the impression that he’s just some nerd who makes internet videos, but he’s a legit filmmaker, who’s trying to make his first major FEATURE film. And you’re trashing his efforts to try and do that?

There will come a time when we won’t be getting anymore AVGN videos, or likely anything else of the sort, because he will be far too busy making movies full-time, and I hope that day comes. But why would anyone who professes to be a “fan”, come on his website and put him down for asking his fans to donate towards the filmmaking costs? If you can’t, or won’t, donate, then just don’t. But to trash talk him, as if you’re someone to talk, when he actually creates things and does something productive with his life……is simply absurd.

Sorry to rant. But posts like yours are ridiculous. As a writer and aspiring filmmaker myself, I say, more power to James Rolfe and his crew. They seem like great people, and I honestly hope that he eventually becomes a well known filmmaker. He deserves it, because he earnestly loves film. And you gotta respect that.

  • August 21, 2011 at 2:32 pm

$5 sent, now don’t spend it all on drugs πŸ˜›

Here is a suggestion for future funding: for a modest fee ($5/year?) make your videos available in a podcast-friendly rss-feed, in a mobile compatible format. I would love to have my mobile podcast player pick up your new creations as you post them. This is what The Escapist does for their membership option, and for me it has been well worth the money.

  • 1stjambon

    August 21, 2011 at 10:20 pm

Yup typical response from a selfish person that’s ungrateful for everything.

    1. How many hours of entertainment have you got from the site?
    2. How much money are you forking over for cable every month?
    3. You seriously don’t think all the entertainment you’ve gotten from this site is worth even a measly $5 when you’re probably spending 10X that on your cable bill a month when 30% of every TV show is just commercials?

You obviously have no clue just how much time and money the guy spends making these videos. It’s practically a full time job doing the videos and maintaining the website alone. Not to mention the production costs for the videos are pretty high too with having to buy recording media and equipment.

This idea that he’s making a killing from the videos is far from the truth, he’s probably getting an average income that any other full time job would provide. And this movie is going to require a LOT more to develop when you factor in paying actors, recording media, makeup, costumes, venue rental fees and all the hundreds of other little fees and expenses associated with making a movie that could potentially come up depending what the script is like.

Yes people are donating hope it will go towards the movie, but so what if it doesn’t? It’s a donation that’s made to show you’re grateful for all the free entertainment we’ve gotten over the years.

    August 22, 2011 at 3:07 am

I am proud to say you have $20 from me. I don’t get these haters and I’m not going to try. I will say though you SHOULDN’T feel bad about posting a video about donations. Money makes the world go ’round. Period. You’ve given the public free entertainment, are committed to your goals and your word with continued support and content and that means a lot. Especially on a low budget. I don’t think people realize a movie that has decent value to it such as props, far away locations, wardrobes, outside help, equipment and other expenses costs thousands to even a small time indy crew. That the costs add up per feature length time, A-movie to indy. This is a great pursuit, it takes balls to make it and with your track record (over 200 movies), you’ll pull it off in spades man. I’ll kick down another $20 when I can. Wish I could do more.

Thanks for all your hard work! Ignore the haters and kick some ASS!!!

Usually I don’t like people asking for donations on the internet because they try to justified themselves and they seem to lie and that pisses me off. You never did that, and I think that you never asked for donations before (in 6years !) and that is really cool !

Today you’re asking for donations but there is a good reason for that : the production of your movie. That’s normal to ask money to produce a movie so you don’t have to feel as if you were begging on the streets !

  • metadragon142

    August 22, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Of course i will donate money to you AVGN! Don’t feel like you are a beggar on the streets. You have a justified reason to ask. Everyone on this site wants you to make an amazing movie. We all want you to do the best job that you can. And if donating a few dollars helps, then i gladly will donate to you. You have very loyal fans, that want to see you succeed. So do your best, don’t rush it. Take your time with this project. And have fun with it.

That’s what fans are for. πŸ™‚

  • jivebob

    August 22, 2011 at 6:53 pm

Hope the movie goes well, looking forward to it. For those who say this site is “free”…my assumption is that is about half true. You see, there is this thing called advertising which I see regularly on here. Visitors to the site help bring in advertising revenue. Thus telling people to go away because they offer some criticism that is not directed at you yet you decide to take personally makes no sense when discussing the success of this site or any other future projects. I find it funny so many people go to the offensive to such a large degree when someone offers a bit of criticism…or even make a request (most often more AVGN.) As cool as it would be, I do not forsee James coming to your house and giving you a high five for trying to defend his honor. I am sure he is used to the yays and nays by now and takes it all in stride (though this is all just a guess.) Praise and feedback are pretty common, I see both as a good thing, but arguing is pointless…unless I am arguing at which point it makes perfect sense.

Have you considered using Kickstarter to get your movie funded? I just donated $100 and lent a friend $100 for Saturday Morning Breakfast Ceral’s kickstar for their upcoming series, they wanted $15,000 and ended up with $77,000 with almost 2,500 people donating.

With your popularity it should be an easy thing for people to get to, find, and donations are as easy as putting in your information or just logging into Amazon.com and paying through your account there.

I’ve bought all your DVDs over the years, a little short on cash now after buying things to try to start my own website and show reviewing video ,board, and card games but I’ll likely send at least $100 or $200 when I can. I’ve bought all the DVDs and donated to a lot of different people TGWTG, Spoony, SMBC, The Gamers, Tomorrows Nobodies, about time I sent you something.

  • August 26, 2011 at 1:22 am

You don’t have to feel bad about it James. As you have stated, people has contributed even without this video showing up. You have a fan base that loves your work (and I include myself in it) and really wishes to help you chase and fullfill your dreams. I still remember the video you made about the Dragon in your dreams and I’ll repeat what I said there here.

James, you have all the creativity, wits and intelligence to do whatever you want. You have done something that thousands of people wouldn’t even imagine. Be proud of it man. And remember: It doesn’t matter if your movie is indy style of a full fledged company production, I’ll still be proud to see your stuff, via internet or in the cinema.

Keep up the good work and avante!

    Greetings from Mexico.

If you’re in the market to get an HVX, you can get a used one for around 2K with four 16 gig P2 cards. Usually from church/missionary groups who are converting to the Red. Audiotechnica makes a cheap boom mic kit, and you can get lighting pretty cheap too. The most overpriced thing I can think of is a figrig, which don’t get me wrong are completely awesome, but 500 bucks for an over glorified wheel that you mount your camera to is fucking ridiculous. Good luck dude.

  • Calavera

    August 26, 2011 at 6:29 pm

You own a Nintendo World Championship cartridge and you are asking for donations? That is fucked up man. More power to you I guess for scamming these idiots out of their money.Still you own a NWC and you are asking for donations. Fucked up man, that is fucked up.

  • Calavera

    August 26, 2011 at 6:30 pm

Some guy who is unemployed and broke donated you 10 dollars, ten dollars he could have used for something. You have a $10,000+ game cart, seriously that is fucked up James. i really don’t know what to say, I just can’t believe you are scamming these ppl. Fucked up!

  • August 26, 2011 at 6:59 pm

You’ve given us a lot of entertainment James, tons of laughs, we are happy to help with what we can

  • diegowar

    August 26, 2011 at 7:06 pm

Calavera why are you even here ? You’ve already made your point and people have already answered you 10 000 times.

It’s not only that you imply that because he’s making a movie he shouldn’t have the right to buy anything else… But actually, the thing is that he could be a millionaire, if he needed my help, I’d still give it to him in any way I can including in money because this guy deserves it more than pretty much any other artist I know of.

Please don’t waste anymore of your time Calavera, wasting time is really f*cked up.

When I can I’ll donate because I wanna see this movie that bad. I’ve been a fan of yours for five years so I think I can give back a little.

  • August 27, 2011 at 5:31 am

Hey James maybe you could get rolling rock to be a sponsor of your movie.

  • tonedeafmusician

    August 27, 2011 at 12:20 pm

The chances are that James didn’t pay $10,000+ dollars for a game. Strikes me that he is neither that rich nor that stupid. It was most likely a donation or, though unlikely, he received it like he said he did in the video. Besides which you are completely missing the point of filmmaking. When you are releasing a film the point is to get the money from elsewhere rather than spending out of your own pocket. Sort of a company payout if you will. Every filmmaker in the industry gets producers and investors to pay for the pre, post and production of a film. My second point is that this man is asking you to pay a little bit of money for him to make a film. Now think of all of the videos of his that you have viewed for free. He’s not demanding that you send him any money, it is not a scam as you will see a result and ultimately the price is yours to pick. Hell in today’s market $20 is less than you’ll pay to go and see the latest shitty Michael Bay release. So lighten up on the guy will you? He is here to entertain people and entertain he has. I, for one, am a high school student with very little money but I am willing to give some money to the cause because I believe in supporting those who have earned my support.

  • August 27, 2011 at 1:47 pm

Hey James, I donated $100 I hope it helps a little.
Love your videos, and they give exceptional game design insight!

Hey everyone, I made a AVGN custom made sculpture / figurine to help raise funds on ebay. 100% of the auction ending price will go directly to Cinemassacre.com so if you want a cool decoration for your game room or AVGN dungen, bid now. The money goes to website and hopefully to help bring us, the fans, an awesome AVGN movie. Thank you!

I have full 100% support for indie. I don’t have faith in these money-hungry super corporations who destroy all of our favourite franchises when they buy the rights. The future of quality entertainment is in Indie developers.

But Indie doesn’t necessarily mean low budget. You have given me so much entertainment throughout the years, I think it’s about time I pay my debts. As an indie developer myself, I thank you James.

@hate2pay After over 100 episodes of AVGN, you need a commercial to give James the support he needs? I wish I could donate a quarter to you so you can buy yourself some decency. I wonder if you will say the same when your customers will “hate to pay” for your products in the future when you get into the business world.

  • August 29, 2011 at 4:41 pm

  • Sammit

    August 31, 2011 at 11:37 am

    You got my donation!

I also just think it’s funny how the very next Nerd episode after this was a video of The Nerd destroying a $11,000 game.

  • Santa Horse

    September 1, 2011 at 9:58 am

TheCount – good question, he mentioned a while ago that he used to work as a voice actor for corporate presentations so maybe he still has enough in the bank that he can indeed support himself through internet revenue.

    September 2, 2011 at 8:09 am

I’ve already told you twice but since you don’t have the ability to understand, I’m gonna tell it once more :

For what he’s already done, he deserves way more than what he’s received already. He could not make one more single video from now on and I wouldn’t regret rewarding him with my donation.

And hopefully, when the movie comes out, you won’t come ever again to talk about this.

  • September 2, 2011 at 2:50 pm

  • BeauThompson

    September 16, 2011 at 11:51 pm

I have to agree. Kickstart.com helped a friend of mine’s production company get $3,000 so he could start production of his first short film. I don’t know how much it works for more expensive productions, but I would definitely think it could be something to consider.

Either way, keep up the great work! Hope everything works out!
