Havent even watched it yeah but im so excited to see this return, shortly after the teenag mutant ninja turtle board games, i was really hoping to see this series make a return! after working a 9 hour shift only to get up in the morning for another 9 hours of work at 8am, this made my night. thanks and keep it up!

    June 10, 2011 at 11:15 pm

WOAA, Board Jame is back ;D!!!

  • June 10, 2011 at 11:17 pm

I do have to admit, I owned this as a child, wasn’t the game I wanted, it was that one game you did that was D&D based, but never less, I spent many hours of fun with this one game. I wish I knew what had happened to it though. I haven’t seen it in years.

  • June 10, 2011 at 11:18 pm

Ah, another fine installment of board James! I really love this series.

This game actually looks like it’d be very fun to try out. Lots of really imaginative aspects, particularly those monster cards. Though the mechanics do seem a little complicated. I wonder if it would be fun to play more than once or if it would get old fast?

Anyway great work as always James! πŸ™‚

  • June 10, 2011 at 11:20 pm

Yes, a new Board James! Awesome work!

  • June 10, 2011 at 11:21 pm

  • June 10, 2011 at 11:23 pm

LOL the Demon King looks like the knights who say NI

    Anyone else see that?

  • June 10, 2011 at 11:29 pm

I only play this a few times an my cousin’s house but it was lots of fun. A few years back I acquired it for myself as an adult.

  • MarcusOrlyus

    June 10, 2011 at 11:30 pm

Hahahaha, sweet! I remember I asked for this game to be reviewed in a past comment. That probably wasn’t the reason for this, but still, thanks a lot. πŸ˜€

  • June 10, 2011 at 11:36 pm

I used to have this game when I was little but it was way too complicated to play so I wanted to know how you play it. Board James explained it well but I still have questions.

  • June 10, 2011 at 11:37 pm

Why haven’t i heard of this game?!?!

  • June 10, 2011 at 11:40 pm

Yet again another great vid. Qapla sir!

  • Fei Wong

    June 10, 2011 at 11:43 pm

When you have to gice the meat to a dog-monster, now James, you remember Grumble-Grumble? πŸ˜€

  • June 10, 2011 at 11:44 pm

Now that is a kick ass board game, Board James. I sort of remember that game, but my memory is a little foggy. I think I’ll have to look up that board game’s commercial on You Tube, if there is one on You Tube that is. Thanks for sharing, James. I would love to see more of these and the Bullshit man. Of course I know you can only do so much at a time with AVGN being your primary role at the moment.

  • Cold Prophecy

    June 10, 2011 at 11:44 pm

I actually own this game, wow!

Another great video and a prime example of why so many of us love the return of Board James. πŸ™‚

Keep up the fantastic work and best of luck getting the AVGN movie done in a timely manner!

  • June 10, 2011 at 11:45 pm

Well here is the commercial. Surprised I found it so quickly.

    June 10, 2011 at 11:52 pm

@TwistedSpeech Damn you! You beat me to it! lol! Oh well. Interesting looking game. I found the video through This is a great site. You can find practically any board game you are looking for new or old. Check it out sometime James. It may help you to find one of those lost classics that you would love to relive and do a review on.

  • June 10, 2011 at 11:56 pm

@Hajeil Sounak: Sorry about that, lol!

  • June 10, 2011 at 11:58 pm

That actually sounds like a really awesome game. I’m definitely going to look for it.

  • June 11, 2011 at 12:07 am

Whoa, this game actually looks like a lot of fun.

  • nviso209

    June 11, 2011 at 12:20 am

I had clearly forgotten all about this game from the “old days” but after seeing the whirlpool it clearly sprung me back into the ad from the decade! AWESOME review of an AWESOME GAME! JAMES = GAMES!

Old school Apple’s difference was the Wizard of Woz… That company GIANT quasi techno-cult that it has become will never be anything without year after year of the same devices w/ minor updates… BTW Anyone want a $10 Iphone 3G? Long live the IIc baby!

Haha why is the mummy crawling out of a grave

  • johnmorisi

    June 11, 2011 at 12:52 am

This looks pretty great… but the rules seem a little too loose. Like instead of just going for the key, you could have the strategy of just killing everyone till it is just yourself, and then you basically win

  • Dolly Dagger

    June 11, 2011 at 12:56 am

Looks like a great game…but why are you reviewing it solo? I think the last Board James you did on your own was Fireball Island.

  • June 11, 2011 at 12:56 am

    Good episode James =)

  • Karate Kid Icarus

    June 11, 2011 at 1:02 am

  • June 11, 2011 at 3:08 am

I wonder how much this game sells for on eBay just jumped? πŸ˜‰

Seriously, that looks freakin’ awesome. I don’t know who designed that game, but I hope he got an award.

  • CaptainStorm

    June 11, 2011 at 3:15 am

Have you noticed that every Board James game so far has some kind of
special device, like a plastic ball or spinner (or eeh…VHS tape)? Many even make use of the third dimension in some way. Well, none of the games I grew up with was like that, I wonder if it’s something typical for American games in general or just a reflection of the ones that James choose to review?

  • Kenlaboss

    June 11, 2011 at 3:43 am

james dont over work yourself good video man

  • LisVender

    June 11, 2011 at 3:47 am

I love that Board James usually showcases a game with a fantasy setting, or a “world” that really lights up the imagination.

  • Senter

    June 11, 2011 at 4:51 am

OH MY GOD! That’s my childhood game! I still have it! It’s one of the few games I took with me when I went to live on my own. We translated the game to: “De schat en de sleutel” The treasure and the key.
But Key to kingdom sounds better. I loved the game so much. Of course I won often and my family didn’t want to play it anymore.

The box is covered in tape, trying to get it together. I miss 3 or 4 characters, a few bosses, the bridge pieces and yeah that’s about it. It’s show this game.

  • June 11, 2011 at 4:51 am

My friend had this game. We played it once and fucking loved it. Next time we were over we went to play it again but couldn’t find it. Turned out his mum had given it away because she thought no one played with it. Sooooo devastated.

  • lauri

    June 11, 2011 at 4:53 am

i actually owned it as a kid. i didnt even play it with the real rules we just fucked around till we got bored lol. now i cant find it anywhere so must have sold it on a fleemarket or something. it still was a cool game tho.

  • Aristotelles

    June 11, 2011 at 4:55 am

Another wonderful episode from James..too bad Mike wasn’t here playing with James!

  • Senter

    June 11, 2011 at 5:06 am

Oh and I played it last year with my canadian girlfriend. So with every trial I had to look it up in the manual (all the trials was in the same book written in dutch). So I had to translate what she had to do. Now she calls it the ‘lag game’ because if you don’t have every trial summed up in your head, you’ll have to wait until you’ve looked it up. I never imagined you would review that board game. My family and I played that game even more often than Monopoly. But then again my dad didn’t like monopoly that much.

  • Xen11

    June 11, 2011 at 5:23 am

    Fucking awesome!

I have a strange vague remembrance of this board. Especially those whirlpools. I’m thinking maybe my best friend/next door neighbor had it ( he had every fucking toy that existed) and we fucked around with it, not following the rules.
I would have loved to play it properly, but it turns out that I am surrounded by retards.

Senter, I wish I had a canadian girlfriend, but I’m stuck in the south, where the girls are stupid as fuck.

  • Anton Sergei Dela Merced

JAMES! MIKE! ANYONE! What is with this annoying Nexus S phone advert that is sh.ting all over about 60% of your website? Makes it really hard to actually see what I came here to see cos most of the site content is now behind the actual advert! Also can you start posting your vids to YouTube again and linking them in each post so iPad users can actually view your content on none flash devices!

This looks like one of those games Matt and Aaron from Blame Society would play while drinking their obscure beers.

  • Mureena

    June 11, 2011 at 7:42 am

Heh, I had a Finnish version of this game and it seriously was something unique. You had to have at least 4 players to get best out of it and one game could last 2 hours, but man, It’s just damn fun game and a big source of good memories to me.

    Also, WHERE’S MIKE?

  • Joemarvelly

    June 11, 2011 at 7:42 am

The Nexus adverts are blocking the left and right hand sides of the screen! I can’t watch the video like this! It’s like this on all the videos on Cinemassacre at the minute!!

  • June 11, 2011 at 8:22 am

I would want to try this game, but you single-handedly caused this game to shoot up in price on Ebay. A few days ago one sold for $3, the only one listed now is over $50.

  • June 11, 2011 at 8:26 am

When you opened that board… I spilled my drink and knocked the bowl of chips over.

  • Chris-R.

    June 11, 2011 at 10:43 am

Fuck yeah! I love the Board James series, it’s so nutty. I lolled at the camera shot of everyone’s pieces “comin’ to getcha.”
    Viele Dank, James!

PS – Will we ever see the return of Bad Luck Bootsey?

Looks like a fucking Awesome Board Game.

  • BrockLobster

    June 11, 2011 at 11:55 am

James, you son-of-a-bitch! I had this game as a kid, and no fucking kids would ever play it with me! Once I pulled the board from the box, the size of the board actually intimidated them, keeping them from wanting to play a game that takes so long to play. Ass-holes! Thanks for bringing back the memories of this incredibly special board-game, though. You definitely had good taste to have owned this master-piece.

  • Lionhearte

    June 11, 2011 at 12:19 pm

Oh hell yes! I saw this stashed away in one of your earlier videos James and was waiting for you to do a review on it.

I got this game at a weedy-weedy as a kid nearly a decade ago, but it had a few missing pieces. I think a character or two is gone and there were only 3 pieces to the bridge, and no dice either, if I recall, but all the cards and the instruction manual was in it.

No one wanted to play, but I still entertained myself with my 10 yr old imagination! I still have it. Actually, it’s in my closet, to my right. I’m looking at it right now! I think I’ll pull it out and have a quick drive down memory lane πŸ™‚

  • ClassicGamer

  • Detroit Dawg

    June 11, 2011 at 12:38 pm

Looks like a fun game, but the review seems a bit lacking. I wish it was longer, why not invite Mike and a couple others over to play it, if not for the sake of the review at least. I think if this review was 5 or 6 minutes longer, it would be better, but was cool for what it was. Can’t wait til’ the next Board James video.

    June 11, 2011 at 9:34 pm

This game looks sick! Interesting game mechanics. As much as I love to see these old school fantasy themed reviews, it makes me miss AD&D. AD&D ruled the galaxy.

  • Calavera

    June 11, 2011 at 11:47 pm

Nice review, although I don’t think there would be many people who would want to sit down and play it (your friends included James) lol you know its true

  • JJTwinDragon

    June 12, 2011 at 2:15 am

James you seriously need to sort out the adverts you’ve got on your site. This current advert for the Nexus phone is eating into the screen so that I can’t see the whole of this message box whilst I’m typing! I’m also unable to see all peoples’ comments and whatever other messages you post up that I’m curious to read. The advert is probably around 2 inches wide and is both sides of the screen, also there doesn’t appear to be anyway to close it down. Please can you sort this out, it’s not cool!

  • MrSoreto

    June 12, 2011 at 3:11 am

This game was called “de schat en de sleutel” in Dutch!

  • honkytonk

    June 12, 2011 at 3:22 am

I love dutch soreto, sounds like drunken german ; ) So it was called “The treasure and the sleutel” well I don’t have a clue what sleutel could mean.
    Sounds dirty : )

Looks like a great game and I think it’s the first game I didn’t know before from all the boardjames games.

  • ShizoMoses

    June 12, 2011 at 4:59 am

@honkytonk: I’m guessing that “sleutel” is the Dutch equivalent of the German word “SchlΓΌssel”, so it would be key, which would make sense in my opinion, seeing that the game’s original title is “Key to the Kingdom”.^^

And I must say, I somehow gotta get my hands on this game. It looks damn awesome.

That’s to Board James. Always digging up the classics.

  • June 12, 2011 at 8:08 am

Wow! Never thought I’d see this one here. πŸ˜€ Out of all the board games reviewed here, I own Mousetrap, Dragon Strike and Key to the Kingdom. Key to the kingdom was a very dear game to me when I was a kid due to it being chock full of adventure and semi-scary stuff like skeletons, monsters and demons etc. I always wished I could’ve played as the Demon King ’cause he looked so badass (what with being like 8 feet tall and the embodiment of darkness). πŸ˜€ I also loved how the board expanded via the whirlpools. Here in Finland, the box art looked different though, so I didn’t recognise the game from the title card before watching the review. Also, in Finnish it was called “Pimeyden Valtakunta”, which means “Kingdom/Realm of Darkness”.

I’d love to see a review on the Biker Mice from Mars game called “Biker Mice from Mars: Take Back the City” which was also very dear to me (it might actually be crap but I just loved the cartoon so much that it didn’t matter :D)

My ultimate favourite, though, was “Ghost Castle”.
It was head-explodingly awesome with a glow-in-the-dark skull that you dropped into a coffin that made all kinds of crazy stuff happen on the board (kinda like Mousetrap). I’d definitely recommend that you take a look at that.

Thanks for the review James & Mike!

  • June 12, 2011 at 8:11 am

Btw, here’s the alternate Finnish box art for Key to the Kingdom:

  • TheDon

    June 12, 2011 at 8:34 am

Hahah wow, never thought I would hear dutch lanquage here xD. I’m Dutch myself, and yes “sleutel” is indeed “key” in dutch. But it’s not drunk german! haha. Loved this episode. I acually played this game alot with my dad, back in the day.

Wow, never even heard of that one. Thanks James and company’

Yeah, never heard of this one. We didn’t seem to have a great collection of fantasy board games here in Ireland when I was a kid :/

This looks like a hell of a lot of fun.

I had this as a child and loved it. The German version surprisingly has a totally unrelated title and is known as “Tarralans Traumland” which translates to “Taralan’s Dreamland”.
Highly recommend it – it is as much fun as it looks like.

Lol. Wow. I totally called this review the Monday prior to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles board game review. I left a comment stating that I had noticed he had Key to the Kingdom in his board game collection & kind of summerized it.

Well, I doubt my comment was a deciding factor lol, but nevertheless this game is one of the most original & fun games to play. I play this with friends all the time.

I would also like to mention I have been working for the past few months converting this board game into an RPG using RPG Maker software for PC. I’ve stayed clear from RPG cliches & tried to adapt the game as best as I could. I think anyone that has played the board game would throughly enough playing & even if you had not played the board game, it would be very entertaining.

It plays & feels just like the game, using probability to determine almost everything & using (or losing) your equipment to cross hazards & monsters. The game is so non-linear you could basically go to any of the dungeons within any order & have 1/6 chance of getting the Key from the first dungeon you go to.

It has a lot of backstory & exploring is what I’m really pushing towards. You gain no exp. from battling, no gold from monsters & in fact their are no random battles all together. There are a lot of side quests & diversions to keep you away from your main task & each of the 5 treasures (exluding the Cobra Card) will help you in some way.

I have heard all good things from everyone whom has played it, but it is still far from completion. I really can’t do my game justice in a comment box review ha, but if anyone would like to play my beta version (basically just the regular map & no flip side yet) contact me via Yahoo Mail ThatTrekBoy & I will gladly send you a playable copy πŸ™‚

Very cool looking board game. Never played it before but even as I saw James expanding the game when you hit the whirlpool I was thinking, “That it so Awesome!!!” and wanted to play it right then and there.

I hope the Uncanny X-Men game is on Board James radar. That was a game you pretty much just bought for the figures. I think I played more with those than the actual board game.

Great review as always. I gotta say James, I’ve been checking out these games on ebay the day after you make a new Board James review, and they all have tons of bids on them. I would wager that your followers are going on there and bidding big. For any insiders to Cinemassacre who know what video you’ll be putting out next, you might want to buy copies of this game ahead of time and make some extra cash hahaha. It’s like insider trading for nerds!

  • June 14, 2011 at 7:32 am

The game sounds really interesting, I have to say. The way you make these videos, it makes people really want to play them. You could probably make a killing in advertising if you ever wanted to!

Nice to see Board James back again. Thanks.

  • June 14, 2011 at 9:15 am

Although before his time, my absolute favorite board game was ‘Dark Tower’. Released around 1980 or 81, this board game featured an actual electronic Tower that actually kept track of each player’s progress as they ventured forth and collected treasures, equipment, and warriors to eventually make an assault on the Tower itself. Playing with three other players was an epic fun time. I later claimed my own copy of the game for a hefty $150 as it is now very rare to find in good complete condition. I did some research on this, and it seems MB had to pull the game shortly after release due to being sued over stealing the game concept from a private author.

James, if you’re by chance reading this, I highly recommend getting your hands on a working and complete set of Dark Tower. If you liked Key to the Kingdom, you’ll get a real kick out of Dark Tower. As a kid in the early ’80s, I was blown away by it, and it still impresses to this date.

  • June 14, 2011 at 9:20 am

BTW, here’s a link to a web site dedicated to the Dark Tower game and its rather controversial past:

  • CubaN

    June 14, 2011 at 10:00 am

This game. Is so. AWESOME: I have to say though, that me and my friends in fact got bored to this game and modified it. We ditched the demon king, and every time you passed his square, you would have to pick up a “minion card” and fight against whatever popped up. Kinda like dungeon monsters, but on the field. Made the game hell lotta tougher. And oh yeah, we made them cards ourselves. There’s stuff like “The man with thousand eyes”, your basic flying skull, and “the demon general” who could only be killed with the sword with the eye on it.

and oh yeah, fuck that voodoo-bitch.

  • June 14, 2011 at 11:13 am

Kepp making these James, because if I ever become a mother, I’m going to hunt these games down for my kids.

  • June 17, 2011 at 1:50 pm

You know I picture myself in my thirties and forties, assuming I’m more financially secured in a career of sorts, getting people together to play this shit. It’s great when your a kid because no one has anything better to do. Today it’s near impossible getting a group together in order to play a board game. Everyone either is buys, get bored to quick, or are sore losers.

I have the finnish version of it. The people who lived here before left it. The finnish versions name is Pimeyden Valtakunta and translates to “The Kingdom of Darkness”. Dunno why they couldn’t at least try to keep it more original. Anyway I gotta play it with someone. The day I found it in my room here I was like, THIS MUST BE FATE!!

I want to play this! It’s so rare I get to sit down and play a board game with people, these days. What with all the MMORPGS etc. But whenever I do get to play a board game, I realize how underrated it is. If the game is good, it can be just as entertaining (if not more) than playing an online game, separately. It’s just more authentic, I guess.

I had this game! matter of fact, it’s still rotting and collecting dust on my wardrobe. and even weirder, I’m german! it must’ve been popular back in the day.

the funny thing is, I never played it, I was too young to care how to play so I just mixed all the pieces/cards up into my own game. the board’s design is awesome though..

incredible that after all this time, you happen to be the person who finally enlightens me on how this shit works! too bad I can’t play it anymore πŸ™‚

It looks awsome! I wish i could play it.

  • TheUnbeholden

    November 11, 2011 at 3:56 pm

yeah this is pretty lame. Its like a really weak version of Hero Quest, Dungeon and Dragons Miniatures or Blood Bowl which are alot more complex (hero quest has those tiles that are used for dungeons so allow you to explore many different terrain, uncover different monsters/traps, items, weapons, spells… it was randomized or a dungeon master could come up with his own selected stuff and you could customize your character, so in other words was like a board game version of War Hammer).
Blood Bowl had a board game where you had cards to represent the models in your team and you basically played a team sport where teams can fight as well as play foot bowl (a bowl that has spikes on it LOL). It had a comprehensive rules and was basically a parody off War Hammer.
Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures is a newer board game (so I suppose a little unfair to compare it to this one) that has large collection of models that are plastic and come already painted so no need to screw around with that. It basically uses a point system to determine how many models you can choose to be part of your army. Its simple to play yet can be varied and have complex strategies.

I’m so happy!! ^^ On James’ recommendation, I decided to try to acquire this game.. so I won this board game off of eBay for just around 20 dollars, and another 20 dollars to ship it from the UK to me in Sweden, I just got it today… and it is in MINT condition!! πŸ˜€ 100% complete. everything is there and the game itself is not worn at all. Its the british version, but its basically the same as the american version, only its published by Waddington’s instead of Golden, so it has a different cover-art, but that’s about it. I’m so excited and looking forward to play this with my friends. πŸ˜€ Thanks to you, James, this is everything I have ever wanted in a good adventure board game since I was a kid. ^^

I just got this for $1 at a garage sale! Everything but the Demon King. Which I can replace with a Lego or something. Woo!
