  • March 3, 2011 at 12:17 am

Before I even watch it I just want to say how happy I am that its ROB and not ET. Of course if there’s an ET cameo I’ll feel dumb. Time to go watch it then…

Nice one nerd! Looking back over the years of shitty games, and finally battling out with the Robot himself. I guess this is technically a sequel to the NES Accesories episode then?

    March 3, 2011 at 12:37 am

This was amazing!! I’ve been watching AVGN for a few years now, and they’ve been making me laugh ever since. I had to register just to comment on this one. Hope you had as much fun making this as it was to watch!

  • March 3, 2011 at 12:39 am

oh shit, and by the way, I got the sense throughout this that it’s a bit of a premonition of what to expect from the AVGN movie…and if that’s the case, it definitely gets me hyped. I was a bit skeptical if this 10-20 minute show could translate into a full-length feature film, but after watching this episode I really feel psyched to see what kind of crazy shit you’ve got up your sleeve for the movie. This is kind of reminiscent of the Mr. Bucket video, and really shows that you’re on top of your shit in a cinematic sense lately.

  • Shadd

    March 3, 2011 at 12:43 am

Great episode. Truly captured the heart of the Nerd, and how bad games create variety. Shows how the Nerd, despite hating all the bad games, loves them at the same time.

We can’t live without shitty games.
    Hooray for shitty games!

    March 3, 2011 at 12:47 am

Oh, and as a fellow filmmaker, I have to say great job with the whole fight scene. Not just with the special effects (we all know that special effects don’t make a movie) but with the incredible sense of pacing that made the action scenes epic and intense, and the temporary “death” of the Nerd and the subsequent flashbacks felt unexpectedly emotional (definitely an awesome first for your NERD videos). Also the camera angles really emphasized what you were going for, especially that awesome long Zoom over the Nerd’s body. Let me know if you guys need any help with the Nerd movie: barring my schedule and other things I’d love to help in some way!

  • Johnthegamenerd

    March 3, 2011 at 12:48 am

    March 3, 2011 at 12:50 am

I have two YouTube bookmark folders. One for all the video creators I love (AVGN, Brentalfloss, NathanJBarnatt (Talking Classics), InecomCompany (Classic Game Room), ClanOfTheGrayWolf (Amazing, youtube..)), etc.

I also have another one that is JUST stuff that is updated often like InecomCompany where he makes at least a video a day.

I ACCIDENTALLY opened the one with AVGN. This month and last month I was REALLY caught off guard with new episodes. It used to be that I knew that .. around the first thursday or friday the new episode would be up but for some reason I keep thinking it’s we are half way through the current month, not at the beginning of a new one, so I only happen to check on chance.

But it’s a good thing. Otherwise, I used to freak out checking every day anticipating and waiting for the new episode. It’s much better to accidentally land on it and be all “YYYYYYEESTHHHH.”

But .. man, Episode 100. I’m afraid to read any channel comments because they tend to make me sad before I watch the episode these days. While there are a BUNCH of amazing shows these days (see above for just a few), that James certainly helped gain footage tremendously, for some reason.. Cinemassacre shows always hit me in a way that others don’t.

Anyway, Congrats on Episode 100 James! I honestly can’t believe this -> 2004-2011.. .. wow.

  • arklon

    March 3, 2011 at 12:54 am

I was actually a kid when this came out and I remember the robot very well. Every thing you said nailed it, its exactly like that unfortunatly but when I was a kid it still seemed awesome and new having a robot play games with you,. This has to be the most epic Nerd video yet, you have truley outdid yourself with this one. I am speechless.

  • samuraichikx

    March 3, 2011 at 12:55 am

This was friggen epic, awesome job, James. Keep doing what you do, your vids are one of the only things that keep me going through the month.

  • March 3, 2011 at 12:56 am

Fantastic episode, had me rolling! Great special fx! During the end battle I was waiting for someone to knock over a pagoda;P I’m psyched to see you guys finally went widescreen too. Really gave it that cinematic feel. Congrats on 100 episodes and here’s to many more!

  • Diknbeans

    March 3, 2011 at 12:57 am

Absolutely fantastic job James! You wen’t all out and really made a perfect 100th episode. I loved how it was never even addressed in actual words, just the epic scope of it made it so perfect.

  • March 3, 2011 at 12:57 am

He makes him a gyro sandwich. How funny.
    Congrats on episode 100.

  • Jigglysaint

    March 3, 2011 at 1:00 am

I was having lots of problems with Firefox and Flash today, so the only way I could watch the new Nerd is by downloading Opera. Firefox got Firefux’d and hopefully by tomorrow it will be Firefix’d.

  • tjsynkral2

    March 3, 2011 at 1:00 am

The pen totally hit Fester’s Quest, though, not Gyromite. Now that I’ve pointed this out, you will have to do a revisit of that one!

  • March 3, 2011 at 1:00 am

Wow… I must say James, that was the best episode you’ve ever done. Using ROB as a villain was genius, and the cheezy special effects and climactic plot pulled the idea off brilliantly. Is this the end of AVGN? You got real talent man, lets see some bigger projects!

    March 3, 2011 at 1:02 am

I have been waiting for Rob the robot since he peeked from behind you in the NES accessories review. This was an awesome episode. Thank you James for all the laughs over the years.

  • March 3, 2011 at 1:04 am

The most anticipating video, is a masterpiece.

The story is well written and it wasent predictable. The effects was incredable and the blood in your face made me laugh 🙂 it was silly looking. And since the first episode you have become somewhat of a “good b-actor”.

Thank you for all good laughs. And all i hope is that you continue and evolve. You are a true internet hero for all of us.

  • March 3, 2011 at 1:09 am

Since my comment on GameTrailers will probably never be seen, I’ll re-iterate here, but I’ll just write it better (and I’ll say more too…).

I’m very slightly disappointed here, since you went, like every other reviewer who reviewed R.O.B, with the “R.O.B is evil” angle, BUT I’m glad that you took a more serious approach with the idea, it wasn’t JUST for comedic effect. The few jokes that were thrown in were interesting (I never thought you’d go and actually make a gyro… I’m happy to see that you can still be funny in these videos without having to talk about animal shit), and I really like the message you’re trying to convey here… Very nice stuff.

One thing for sure, I’m happy you didn’t go for reviewing E.T… I’m not sure the episode could have been really interesting, since there’s really not that much to talk about with that game. What would be interesting however, rather than just talking about E.T in one episode, would be an episode dedicated to the video game crash of 1983, but concentrating on the various games and other elements that caused it…. Think about it 😛 More than enough to get “Angry Nerd” about in there.

Also, I do agree with you that Mario is the hero that saved the industry… but it would be very wrong to completely discredit R.O.B as having a part in saving it. He was, after all, the key that enabled to NES to be sold at retail, without him the NES wouldn’t have found its way to stores so fast and the gaming industry would have stayed dead in America for maybe a few more years. But I think you know that already, the whole Mario thing in the video was more for dramatic effect… I think.

Oh, and cool title card Mike, I love the idea.

  • Shinoda

    March 3, 2011 at 1:11 am

    Best episode yet! Great work!

Now for a question… Do you REALLY own that many copies of Gyromite and Stack-up? and if so, how much did they cost you?

  • Bick Benedict

    March 3, 2011 at 1:16 am

Entertaining episode, well put together. Sick title card. AVGN goes hard.

  • volt28

    March 3, 2011 at 1:17 am

Fucking Epic. So Awesome!! Thankyou James and Mike. I hope for many more AVGN to come. SO much better then half the shit on TV

  • Grimmjow Jeagerjaques

    March 3, 2011 at 1:17 am

Oh man, that was fucking incredible James. So epic. That shit with the gyro. Oh my God I had to pause the video to laugh for about five minutes on that shit man. Genius. Congratulations on AVGN 100 man, I love your work. The absolute awesomeness of this video makes the wait for #101 even harder.

  • Aculias

HOLY SHIT, THATS AWSOME!!! Man, i’d really be pissed if some robot came to my room and terminated every video game in the world
(except for those two) before my very own eyes.

  • March 3, 2011 at 1:19 am

Dude, Congratulations on the Episode 100, 😀 I’ve been following you since Day 1 :D.

Keep doing the next 100 episodes, as there are still hundreds of shitty games to review, Very Fun episode, tittlecard omg

  • jamm132

    March 3, 2011 at 1:27 am

Epic episode! It was just the perfect 100th video! I loved everything, the music composed by John Jennings Boyd and Lachlan Barclay was perfect, the editing of the video, the title card by motherfucker Mike as usually perfect, the NES music (Super Metroid and Blaster Master did it for me), the drama, everything was perfect. Congratulations for the 100th video. Hope to see more AVGN soon! Good job James.

  • March 3, 2011 at 1:31 am

  • RichterBelmont

    March 3, 2011 at 1:31 am

Way to exceed the high expectations we all had for number 100. Impressive on all fronts! I love your episodes where you feature a villain. ROB is up there with the Glitch Gremlin and Bugs!

  • You Can Just Walk Over It

    March 3, 2011 at 1:32 am

Cutting up two NES controllers to use at once was genius. I remember some tetris modes where one player would move left and right and the other would flip the blocks.

The music at the end while embracing the NES games and the last glance at the Castlevania box… wow, was extremely moving. Even the long shot of AVGN lying down seemingly ‘dead’ before the black and white flashbacks… all moods/scenarios I’d LOVE to see in the AVGN movie.

Even though the entire situation may be comedic it’s still engaging to just go with it and see AVGN almost die and then summon the strength to fight back and win for his love (?) of playing terrible games. I was pulled in like any good movie would keep me interested until the end.

    Here’s to 100 more episodes!

    March 3, 2011 at 1:32 am

    great episode dude!

  • March 3, 2011 at 1:33 am

That was the epic of epicnisity of epicness Ive ever seen it tis truly the best AVGN every of all time.. Ever!!

    March 3, 2011 at 1:40 am

Several years ago, i went to a game store in Omaha and they had a ROB converted into one of those take a penny leave a penny trays. I thought it was pretty funny.

  • Dr. Bigs Kimble

    March 3, 2011 at 1:41 am

Fuckin’ brilliant. Keep it up James, you mother fuckers never disappoint. By the way, whoever was in charge of making it look like R.O.B. beat the shit out of you and broke your nose did an amazing job. The blood on your face and the bruises look very realistic. Also, good job with the game controllers, Ed Wood would be proud.

  • angelspawn77

    March 3, 2011 at 1:44 am

absolutely awesome episode! Haven’t seen one with this level of special effects in a long time. I thought this was the end of the nerd for a bit there. That was intentional wasn’t it?

  • AbareKiller

  • sonny

    March 3, 2011 at 1:47 am

rob the robot is a peace of crap but it is also an expensive collectors item and vary rare. So it’s shit plated in gold.

Awesome episode guys! Funny and exciting with great special effects!

  • Jacob

    March 3, 2011 at 1:51 am

I think, that was the greatest battle featuring anything Nintendo I’ve seen in my whole entire life! I really thought The Nerd was going to die. Can’t wait for the next episode. And, I noticed something was different in the video, can anyone help me out to what it was?

  • goki

    March 3, 2011 at 1:51 am

The climax almost made me tear up, damn!! This is one of the best AVGN videos. The anger was spot on, and the comedy was definitely there. I hope you guys don’t mind checking out my celebration video; thanks!!

    March 3, 2011 at 1:52 am

    March 3, 2011 at 2:16 am

Fucking amazing! I’ve been watching since late 2008, when I stumbled upon your Friday the 13th review while looking up something for the remake. Just gotta say you’re the best damn thing on the net. Congratulations on the 100th episode!!! Absolutely awesome in every way, James! Can’t wait for the next one!

    Amazing episode! You guys rock!

  • xSpadex

    March 3, 2011 at 2:20 am

@Jacob – I think what’s different about the video is the production of it. From the lighting to the color correction, etc. Then again he could be using a new camera it looks more crisp and HDish.

and James by far one of the best pieces you have done. I always loved Legend of the Blue Hole and Mr. Bucket. I hoped if you did a ROB video it would end up like those videos as in a horror type story and low and behold here it is.

Fantastic work! My hat is off to you!

  • Rob64

    March 3, 2011 at 2:22 am

‘grats on the 100th vid. So what’s gonna come for the 10 year mark?

  • March 3, 2011 at 2:33 am

    ROB ^^
    i had one at home.
This one will be great 😀

  • mcnerven

    March 3, 2011 at 2:34 am

lol I did not see that coming. It was sooner or later that the NERD fought something Godzilla style!

Also glad to see you didn’t do E.T. It’s been discussed to death, there’s not much to say content wise and everyone’s expectations are probably unreasonable at this point.

Also, I would love to see a NeoGeo or Turbo Graphix 16 recap similar to your Jaguar and CD-I videos or MegaMan marathon similar to the Castlevania games. These action episodes are fun, but I find myself watching the historically oriented ones repeatedly, like the Zelda Timeline and most recent Star Wars episode. Also, I never got a chance to place NeoGeo (like many kids) due to its outrageous price and only remember Keith Courage and Bonk from the TG16, so it’d be fun to see what those systems were all about.

Thanks and keep up the great work James and Mike!

  • March 3, 2011 at 2:38 am

AWesome! Congrats on 100 episodes. Here’s to 100 more! Cheers, T

  • March 3, 2011 at 2:38 am

HOLY CRAP! Just… just… WOW! I have no words! That was…. awesome! Quite possibly one of, if not the best AVGN’s yet! How did you do those special effects with ROB and the controllers? Man… maybe I don’t want to know how!

The reviews of the games themselves were hilarious. Especially since you went to the trouble to actually set up ROB and so we actually get to see how he works with the games! I have to say, it’s pretty cool, but I don’t know if it’s really worth all the trouble and money. Not to mention… your home made Gyromite controller was just funny and great at the same time!

I’m blown away! This 100th episode was great in the comedy, review, effects… everything department! As a long time fan who has watched you since the Nintendo Nerd days, and appreciates your other work as well, I have to say you did not disappoint here! GREAT JOB, MR. ROLFE!

I just loved this episode, but I do have to questions.
1.Did you purposely put this up during Carnivale?
    2. Who is “Mrs.” during the credits?

Excellent 100th episode. Loved Rob’s cool robotic voice.

I was So happy to see the finally see The Nintendo Battle Gear make an epic comeback. Especially loved how you wore the U-Force as a lower region armor.

    March 3, 2011 at 4:04 am

Ah i was close on guessing the ROB saving North America from video game crisis… although james implies mario did…

Hmmm it is due to ROB that retailers are willing to allow NES to be placed in their shop as NES with ROB at that time was not marketed as a video game but instead as an electronic toy.

ROB is the Trojan house with Mario hiding inside!

    March 3, 2011 at 4:05 am

Good work, James! Thank you for 100 episodes of pure fun!!! Up tu the next 100 😉

  • Zentu

    March 3, 2011 at 4:05 am

Zentu is pleased! I kinda knew from the NES accessorys vid that that FCR (Refrence the japenese RoB) ((What dose FCR sound like as a word in itself?)) would somehow make an aphearence later on. 100 Episodes…WOW Iam not even up there with my show yet. ANYWAY I think you should take a break, You know you deserve it!

    – You know, Youve done alot of nintendo games and I think we can stand to see some more Sega Master System games. Alex Kidd, although the First game was HARD, it was addictive and fun.

-Looking for more NES Suggestions? hmm lets see
    – Excite Bike….Yea I know its a great game, just wish the Save Feature worked.
-Legacy Of the Wizard – OMG talk about a game that just THROWS you in there, To this day I never beat it…it would of really helped to know what Iam supose to do, if anything the game is TOO cryptic…Oh and the Password system as long as it is, I believe dident work…or maybe it was my copy idk.
-Gauntlet – Yea I know its one of those games where you use your imagineation, but F*** After 30 minutes your board to tears. Makes me wounder if theres any beating it.
-Marble Madness – Yea again, another classic, still some of the moves you have to make are just hard and rediclous, and yet its addictive, its a time trap.
    – The adventures of Dizzy. Another game in which Throws you in there, idk the instruction book might give you an idea on what to do, but I was one of those that Rented the game once upon a time so I don’t know what I was doing. Oh and did I mention the main character and his friends are Eggs? and What?! you can only hold 3 items at a time? what nonsense is that?
    – Super Mario Brothers 2?! Yea another classic, and yet in terms of the classics this one when it first arived, just dident feel right. Not what we were use to at all as far as game machanics in the first Mario. – At least the Super Nintendo and GBA versions of this game were sucessfull. – Origonal….not so much. – You DID do a review on Zelda 2 so…idk only fair I guess.
-Gouls and Ghosts….I hear this game is hard as S**t. I never played it but maybe thats a good thing…..Oh wait, I was unlucky enough to play SUPER Ghouls and Ghosts on the SNES.

  • Besentanz

    March 3, 2011 at 4:13 am

The monologue at the beginning was stupid and the gyros joke was lame, but the rest was absolutely epic and everything we expect from the AVGN.

  • marvelis

    March 3, 2011 at 4:17 am

The only thing missing was you shouting “Ass! Fuck!” when shooting out the batteries. Otherwise an awesome episode. I’m usually more of a fan of simple reviews and have not always liked some acted out stories as much, but this one was superb.

  • FuzZyKnightmare

    March 3, 2011 at 4:20 am

This was pretty fucking awesome. Couldn’t stop laughing at the ridiculousness of it all. Great Job with the editing btw. People need to stop being so picky, it’s entertainment.

100th AVGN Epidsode, I give it 5 out of 5 Hellraiser boxes

P.S. Board James idea: 1992 The Omega Virus, such a fun game.. but that darth vader look-a-like robot pissed me off to no end.

Read someone had commented you should have yelled “Fire Fire Fire” with the Konomi LaserScope that would have been hilarious! One of the funniest moments of AVGN history..

Anyway this episode was one of your funniest but I thought it was maybe a little high paced but great nevertheless. Keep up the good work! ^^

Truly damn good! I could tell that there was a lot of effort put into this one. I thought it was excellent for your 100th episode, and I was wondering for a long time you ever were gonna talk about this NES robot, pretty excessive thing for handling 2 buttons. I’m guessing it was expensive as hell back in the days.

  • GoldRoger

I remember back when I was about 4 or 5, seeing the commercial for ROB and wanting it so badly. I asked for Nintendo and ROB for Christmas that year. Thinking I would be able to play video games with a robot friend was so amazing. Christmas finally came and guess what I got………..a Sega Master System……sonnofabi(*^&! Anyhow morale of this stupid story is ROB is what got me into gaming.

Thanks James and Crew for 100 stellar episodes, your time, dedication, and hard work. YOU ROCK!

  • ReiKo

    March 3, 2011 at 7:08 am

    Ending was so strong. Grats.

  • March 3, 2011 at 7:25 am

Absolutely hilarious, especially the part with the gyros. Well done!

I was hoping you would offer a little more of your thoughts on the whole concept/execution of ROB. I always thought it was an interesting idea that just didn’t pan out (which is the case for a lot of the games you review). Perhaps a short follow up video or blog entry is in order?

  • VGRetro

    March 3, 2011 at 7:37 am

I love this one. It was simply spectacular!

I’ve seen all your reviews to date, but this one had it where it counts. The first few ROB sequences were funny, but when everything starts to happen, I got really excited. There is no word in the English Dictionary to describe how I feel about this episode. This was not just effort put into these videos: it was heart and soul. Everything we know and love about the Nerd was here. And the ending had such a triumphant feel to it, and with no dialogue whatsoever, it feels all the more stronger.

Congratulations, James. My 21st birthday is tomorrow, so for an early birthday gift, this was something truly special. Thank you so much.

You, Mike, Kyle and your wife deserve to celebrate after this one!

The highlight of this episode for me was the stop-motion animation, even though there was very little. I thought it looked great, I’d love to see you do more stop-motion in the future, James.

  • March 3, 2011 at 8:10 am

That was fucking awesome, James! Such a great early birthday gift for me. Yeah, I know it’s not made just for me, but I still thank you for it. One question though, is that really all Rob had was two games? He really couldn’t play with other games like Super Mario Bros. or Contra or even Castlevania? I find that a bit odd. I am surprised he wasn’t compatible with that Piano game he’s in. Rob was a piece of shit. Looks like he only work some of the time. Thanks for being around for 100 episodes. I hope you’re around for another hundred or so.

    March 3, 2011 at 10:19 am

Makes almost no sense to post a comment when there’s already 200 of them, but I just wanted to say to the Nerd that this was a great episode.

My mother was right in not letting me get the deluxe Nintendo model with ROB.

  • MrCredibility

    March 3, 2011 at 10:37 am

One of the best episodes ever!!! Definitely a culmination of all the work you’ve done on the series over the years. Some of the shots and effects were amazing considering it’s basically a one man show.

Congratulations on 100 episodes, can’t wait to see what the nerd has in store for us this year!

  • Mandrik

    March 3, 2011 at 10:37 am

I had to register just to say that was AMAZING! The expectation bar was high for the 100th episode. I know a lot of people were probably thinking ET on Atari, but you went with ROB. Glad you did because you did a KICK ASS job! Here’s to 100 more episodes!

  • March 3, 2011 at 10:39 am

Nice one. I love this one because it is in style whit your earlier videos. Great job
    Greetzzz DjGerard

  • March 3, 2011 at 10:41 am

Now that I finally watch the whole episode, here’s some tips on how to watch it well!

    1. Make sure you clean some unwanted crap off your computer!

    2. It would be wise to use any AD blocker when necessary!

    3. Don’t watch it in full screen mode because for some reason the video keeps freezing when you’re using it. Might be because of the flash player or too many people watching!

  • jamesf

    March 3, 2011 at 10:43 am

I agree with a lot of the others who’ve said that this is one of your best episodes. It was an original way to give a sort of AVGN “retrospective” and to show that the Nerd won’t give up playing these horrible games.

Congratulations on reaching 100 episodes! Looking forward to the next 100.

  • Vixx

    March 3, 2011 at 10:54 am

    March 3, 2011 at 11:08 am

    Thanks for 100 episodes James!

I had this piece of shit robot when I got the NES on it’s original UK release. I never had the “joy” of playing Stack Up but Gyromite wasn’t a terrible game as it reminded me a bit of Donkey Kong Jnr (albeit a shitty version) but the Rob-ot just seemed so redundant. I was expecting so much more as an eleven year old lad. So much effort and so many batteries and the weird screen flashing thing used to give me a headache after a couple of minutes. Anyway this video made me laugh brought back memories and slammed something that rightly deserved it so thanks.

  • xdeathknightx

    March 3, 2011 at 11:20 am

Awesome, I was laughing like hell when you made a Gyros roll 😀 And the end fight was awesome as well 🙂

  • March 3, 2011 at 11:35 am

HAHAHAHAHAHA GYROS!!! So fucking funny! “I tried! Do you want me to go to fucking Greece!”

A+ James, I laughed my ass off, and now I have now ass.

    I luuve it! here’s to another 100!

  • March 3, 2011 at 11:44 am

i just register to say congratulions!
    GREAT WORK!!!!!!

this is one of my favourites episodes, i really laugh in many parts…
and it has all that a 100 episode requires:
A really crappy invention to critic.
A dramatic twist that puts in risk the continuity of the shitty games in the whole world.
And a final confrontation showing the nerd using all the mighty power of the epic shitty accesories that he has.

    just AWESOME!

  • Mxnes

    March 3, 2011 at 11:45 am

I’m glad you didn’t give up, the Nerd will go on reviewing shitty games !
btw this 100th episode was fucking great !

  • heartofiron

    March 3, 2011 at 11:57 am

WOW that was awesome!! Easily one of the best nerd videos ever made!
The special effects were pretty amazing!
It was cool to the nerd near death a nearly defeated only to rise again and gear up to finish off ROB.
It was a nice retrospective of older AVGNs too.

  • March 3, 2011 at 12:18 pm

  • March 3, 2011 at 12:32 pm

That was SO EPIC! I was afraid for a moment you’d actually let the Nerd die and that’d be the end of the series. So I practically cheered when he got up and kicked some robot ass!!

    March 3, 2011 at 1:00 pm

This was fantastic! I love the great blood effect. I had to replay that so many times. Easily one of the best. Thanks for this!

On a side note, I think you should have gotten Brad Jones to voice R.O.B.

  • angel85

    March 3, 2011 at 1:04 pm

Poor ROB, he may have been misguided, but all he wanted to do was revive the then dying medium of video games, but Nintendo cruelly abandoned him once their console became a household name. I wonder if they could make a “ROB 2.0” or something for the wii using modern day processors, which are way faster than what the original used back in 1985.

  • waltsoph3

    March 3, 2011 at 1:10 pm

Hey James a big congratulations on your 100th video! You guys did an amazing job on this one!

Again congratulations to you guys on your videos and I can’t wait to see what you plan to review next. Keep up the great work! 🙂

  • Enraged Elliott

    March 3, 2011 at 2:02 pm

The ending reminded me of a Power Ranger’s episode.

When ROB said “I need Gyros”, I thought “construct additional pylons” and the twist with the gyro sandwich was funny.

Truly, this one was a great episode. Easily one I can watch again and again and laugh at.

James this episode is truly a masterpiece. I LOVE the blood and stop motion effects!! I think this episode is my new favorite, beating the long running champion, Halloween! I am looking forward to more AVGN, movie reviews, monster madness 2011, and your next biography video (Cinemassacre 400 is guess) P.S. at the end when you were on the floor after rob left, i thought that the nerd was dead, and there would be no more new episodes, and i thought this would hapened because u were really busy, but he got up and i was so happy!!! LONG LIVE THE NERD!!

  • gattz

    March 3, 2011 at 3:56 pm

    Oh my fuckin’ god..
I actually called it. I called it. Go check the TMNT post, for those of you curious about this. Click “Older entries” twice, and close to the bottom, I said how, depending on his mental process, it’d be ROB.

    That was 2 days ago.

I fucking called it. I’m not trying to show off, but just amazed. I hate it when others say, “Oh, I’m fucking Jesus for calling it” though I think I’m making myself sound like it now.

  • nicalapegus

    March 3, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Why does everyone keep asking him to make an ET review? It is a bad game sure, but that’s like asking someone to review The Dark Knight… It’s been done, and you know what to expect. I for one love it when James picks games like Little Red Hood, or The Wizard of Oz that I never knew existed… It’s like he’s opening my eyes to a whole wide world of shitty games.

  • CrimsonFireCF

    March 3, 2011 at 4:11 pm

  • Cimmerian_Dragon

    March 3, 2011 at 4:15 pm

I have to admit, I never expected it to reach such a surreal climax. Very amusing.

I did wonder if the controllers were going to go all “Evil Dead vines” on him…

  • 96ross96

    March 3, 2011 at 4:23 pm

Wow how can you follow up to this

  • Cheznar

    March 3, 2011 at 4:27 pm

That was cool as hell thanks again Nerd! I thought it was the shit how he was kinda like “Yeah well these games may be pieces of horse shit but I’ll go ta bat for’em every time fucker!” lol I hear the cry keep the games alive its up to us to preserve them…Cheznar says only you can prevent NES extinction…

    Greetings from fucking Greece!
    The gyro part was brilliant!
The moment it was mentioned you went into the kitchen to make it,
acting as a true Greek would and for this I commend you with the medal of tzatziki and a short glass of tsipuro 😉

  • hate those fucking shitty games

It was a very funny episode, you do some awesome effects!

  • March 3, 2011 at 4:33 pm

Speaking as an asshole who used to play “Gyromite” with his feet, I’ve got to say that the Gyromite Controller was laugh out loud brilliant!

Fantastic episode James, loved all the music as well as all the effects. I was expecting to see Super Mecha Death Christ near the end, but it was nice to see you take care of business on your own this time. Keep up the great work, and congrats on 100 great episodes!

  • Makeda

  • K-dub

    March 3, 2011 at 5:07 pm

This may be the first AVGN i didn’t like. Now i know i’ll get forum trashed for that, but hear me out. Frankly, i don’t like the ones with the “epic” storylines that only have about half of the video for review. Now I like guest characters like Bugs, and the Joker, heck even Kyle Justin, but i think there’s a limit to how over the top it can get. Don’t get me wrong, you did a great job with the effects and costume, but ROB taking over all games kinda pushed it out of focus. All I’m saying is that I like your game reviews to the point, and funny; not “epic”. So here’s me holding out for the real 100th episode, next time. Oh, and your compilation vids are my favorites!

  • RustyCoffinNail

    March 3, 2011 at 5:25 pm

That was awesome!!! I still have my R.O.B. the robot still new in the NES entertainment system box. I used to play Gyromite with two controllers. I used my feet as the second player lol. Great 100th episode!!!

  • Rizzilla

    March 3, 2011 at 5:39 pm

congratulations on reaching this milestone .. and what a way to reach it! absolutely amazing episode.. very touching.. 🙂 keep it coming James.. dont ever stop!

  • lowanon

    March 3, 2011 at 5:39 pm

Thanks for an amazing episode, James! In 1988 me and my sister would play Gyromite without the robot, co-op mode. It was actually a pretty fun game — we never used the robot, I think it broke very early on. I never knew about Stack-Up (Robot Block) very cool to see that. Can’t wait for the TMNT videos, the last bunch were ridiculous.

  • March 3, 2011 at 5:45 pm

    Great episode James!!!

@Pingum: I hate vandalism in wikis! That’s just stupid! I’ll make a reference to the AVGN myself on the page.

@ Pinguim AVGN was already immortalized on Wikipedia w his own entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avgn

Awesome and funny episode! Congratulations, and keep going! 😉

  • March 3, 2011 at 5:54 pm

I’ve been waiting for this show down for a long time.
I got my Rob the robot set for Christmas one year.
none of my other frieds got the delux edition… but I did… I didn’t have the heart to tell them how bad Rob the Robot sucked ass. But Icouldn’t help think of the other games I could have gotten instead that year had my parents just got me the NES w/gun set.
I’m Glad you kicked Rob’s ass. It’s been a long time coming for that piece of shit.

  • March 3, 2011 at 6:32 pm

  • March 3, 2011 at 6:56 pm

Loved this episode James. The highlight for me is when you imitate the robot’s movements. God that was so funny. ( :
I loved the analogy of ROB who was technically brought in to help the NES come along and actually helped the rebirth of videogames back then.
I loved how you wrapped up things with your older videos and also managed to have a “giant monsters” part at the end which is for sure a nod to your love of the monster movies like Godzilla.
    Great work man! ^_^

Been a long-time fan but finally decided to register to commemorate the 100th episode! As usual quality stuff and James continues to remind us of the horrors of shitty games! Congrats on 100!

To mark the occasion, I am going back and watching all 100 videos.

  • spearhead360

    March 3, 2011 at 7:41 pm

The reason why James didn’t do E.T. is because
he’s probably saving it for his movie

  • Brightstar

    March 3, 2011 at 8:25 pm

Honestly I’m a little disappointed in the battle…it was too short. Not to mention it would have been a great time to call on his allies at Channel Awesome, or Super MECHA Death Christ again. Before that it seemed like he was going to kill off the nerd. One has to remember that James originally created the nerd as a side project to his life long passion of film making. I went into this episode fully expecting the end because he has freely admitted that doing this has taken him away from making films and when he started doing only 1 episode a month last year I think it seemed to me that he wanted to wind things down.

Kudos to James though, if he’s going to stick to it, I’m ready to back him up on his decision and wish him the best in all his future endeavors at Cinemassacre.

One of the best avgn episodes i have seen. At least in my top 3! Way to go james you really out did yourself on this vid. I loved the part when your hug your shitty games. *priceless*

( I have been huge AVGN fan since 2006, and after watching 100 episodes of James as the Nerd, he’s inspired me to make my own show, reviewing shitty Wii games! So if you have the time check out my vid on youtube where i review probably the worst Wii game of all time Party Pigs Farmyard Games! )

  • phantom

    March 3, 2011 at 9:20 pm

That was well worth the wait, and was deserving of the 100th episode.
i got kinda sad when i thought rob killed you, because i thought that this might be the last nerd episode, after all thees years of viewing cinemassacre it would suck to c the nerd go.
rob was a dick, demanding gyros and such fuck that robot.

Epic episode, James! Keep it up! Very deserving of the 100th episode.

  • March 3, 2011 at 9:41 pm

I love the use of chiptunes in this. Perfect choices. And I like the Terminatoresque allegory, which was also explored in an episode of Star Trek (original series), of a machine’s concept of “perfection” being the humyn equivalent of mediocrity/sameness. Something I’ve noticed about machines that become self-aware is that they’ll either become more humyn-like, in which case they’ll be comfortable with “imperfection” (Johnny Five, B.O.B., WALL-E, etc.) or they’ll despise humyn imperfections and become genocidal megalomaniacs (Skynet, the B.R.A.I.N., the Borg, etc.). Either that, or politicians will give them conflicting commands and they’ll develop a sort of onset paranoid schizophrenia (HAL 9000).

Figures R.O.B. would choose the path of order. Ironic that The Nerd also stands for order. But that’s ergonomic order. Different concept.

  • March 3, 2011 at 9:55 pm

That title card is FUCKING EPIC!

  • March 3, 2011 at 10:07 pm

I love this episode. It has everything in it. It was funny, it had a great look back on all the old AVGN episodes, and the visual quality was amazing. When it comes to the actual video quality, it was the best. Content quality, there’s been better episodes but this one was still amazing.

  • rodrigomontemayor

    March 3, 2011 at 10:13 pm

While I have the chance thought may I make 2 game suggestions.

The Immortal – Electronic Arts 1991 NES

    Platoon – Sunsoft 1988 NES

    think about it.

  • March 3, 2011 at 10:19 pm

Funny how pretty much all the AVGN copycats have beat you to the punch on this one, so there really wasn’t much reason to have a “history lesson”.

Funny vid. I loved the “gyro” joke. Makes me hungry too!

    March 4, 2011 at 1:44 am

Man this brings back so many memories. kinda reminded me of Pat the NES Punk, only because he’s always talking to R.O.B. Whenever I played Gyromite I always used my feet to control the red/blue pillar things. Keep up the good work James, and hope you won’t mind the competition when I start recording my own reviews lol. Although I’m never gonna touch any game you’ve reviewed, not trying to be another AVGN, gatta find my own niche, helps that I’ve been gaming since I was 1 though, got the picture to prove it too :D. Was thinking Chakan : The Forever Man for Genesis/Game Gear as my first review, not a bad game but probably the most fucked up ending in Video Game History. Either that or the X-Band, no one really talks about that, my cousin had one back in the day, and playing people online on the SNES (and Genesis) blew my mind, and IMO was the precursor to today’s console gaming community.

  • March 4, 2011 at 1:50 am

    March 4, 2011 at 2:48 am

i love these videos the fucked up thing is i could felt slightly upset toward the end because i thought it was the end of the avgn as the backflash went on i thought “no more videos” as a single tear fell

  • March 4, 2011 at 2:58 am

I love james and everything that he does. He is incredibly awesome. But one not so unsung hero as well is the great Mike Matei and his incredible work. I wonder if people notice but this is also Mikes 100th as well. His great work to represent James work. My hat goes down to Jame Rolfe and Mike Matei.

Hey James congratulation to your 100 episode. Great Job!!! Didn’t know about ROB, what were they thinking? ;-). One of your best episodes!!! Now would be the perfect time, to stop making episodes. Don’t understand me wrong, but some of your last episodes wasn’t that good. Now you reached the 100! Good time to stop it! Make the movie and let it be. I mean I LOVE your videos. Looking daily for a new Episode. But I’m afraid that you can’T hold your really high level of entertainment. All the best, greets from Vienna!

    March 4, 2011 at 3:39 am

stupid adds from gametrailers because of them I cant watch the video >8( anyways as far as i can see it (only pictures) it is oke. Well done James!

  • hansolo23

    March 4, 2011 at 3:44 am

Hey SCREE I have two words for you **** ***

Why would he stop making videos. Would He stop if he knows that there are hundreds maybe thousands of watchers that STILL love AVGN. Dont stop at the such a point like after 100 episodes. That just means you will not give up.

So I think we will atleast see episode 150 or 200

  • Jukjuk

    March 4, 2011 at 3:46 am

This was your best video ever, James, you truly blew me away! Even thou i expected your 100th episode to be totally different (some sort of recap/recollection-episode or a totally different classic game-review), i was surprised and enjoyed every second!

Looking forward to your full lenght feature film and MORE BOARD JAMES!!

    March 4, 2011 at 6:16 am

    Awesomely amazing episodes, gentlemen!

Ah yes, Gyromite. It was able to consume a lot of my time back in the days of the 80s! So sad that R.O.B. wasn’t helpful, and that he used so many batteries to operate.

  • greenobeeno

    March 4, 2011 at 7:13 am

  • March 4, 2011 at 1:25 pm

Bravo James! Great episode. It truly was a perfect video for your 100th episode. I loved the speech in the beginning, and how you recapped some of the games, and all the hardware that has shown up in your videos.

It has been a fun ride so far! I hope that you are still around for a 100 more episodes.!!!!!

  • mamopo360

    March 4, 2011 at 1:26 pm

you redeemed yourself on this one and you are back on top of your game. i loved this silent reference to e.t. and the r.o.b. i hope the “no more shitty games” reference means you’re on to the good games with a negative perspective. i am looking forward to episode 101. Godspeed avgn! your hard work is underappreciated and enviable at the same time

  • callmeRaskolnikov

    March 4, 2011 at 1:27 pm

wow james this turned out to be fucking fantastic! great job! this is now one of my favorite episodes for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, you used the music from Blaster Master(which I love) and the music from Gyromite fit perfectly in the review.

Making the Gyro… hilarious, mimicking the rob movements… hilarious. Sawing those controllers to make the Gyromite controller…hilarious.

Everything came together so well in this review it was like a combination of a game review and a console review. Congrats on 100!

  • callmeRaskolnikov

    March 4, 2011 at 1:31 pm

whoops that was metroid music wasnt it. doh!

  • March 4, 2011 at 1:51 pm

Congrats on the 100th episode. I caught up in early February, watching three to five episodes at a time sometimes. Love the monologues, you really do commit to memorizing all the material. And some of the film techniques are really smart. It’s amazing to see how far you’ve come from just the original reviews to now. I love how the skit in this one turns the series on its head a little, showing that you do, in fact, have a great love for all these shitty games. Great job! I hope you never stop making these!

  • stebbinsd

    March 4, 2011 at 1:55 pm

This looks like a job for Supernerd!

  • March 4, 2011 at 2:26 pm

There’s so many great things you can say about this episode. It had a great story arc. It was funny, Sad, and exciting. The moral that the Nerd fought for at that end…fought for the “shitty” games will help anyone put video games (especially retro games) into perspective.

Although I have loved all of your episodes, I have to say that this script was by far your best. The opening, and closing speeches you did were perfect. Great work James! Your hard work really shows.

  • March 4, 2011 at 2:27 pm

Haha!! What a day brightener! 😀 To see the Nerd in full on Battle mode is truly a fucking thing! Haha! James! When I saw you put that head gear on I knew all bets were off! 😀

Congrats on 100 hilarious eps! Hats off! 🙂

  • March 4, 2011 at 2:33 pm

….truly a fucking funny thing is what I meant to say! The expression of pure grimace and disgust is fucking legend! 😀

  • MrMonsterHunter

    March 4, 2011 at 2:33 pm

I’m surprised you didn’t mention that the first Gyromite cartridges were so rushed, that they just stuck the Famicon card into a converter and shelled it with NES casing, which means if you pop one open and it’s the right generation, you have a free Famicon-to-NES card converter. Just a fun nerdy fact I thought you might squeeze in there, but ep.100 was fantastic regardless!

  • March 4, 2011 at 2:53 pm

Really really great ! One epic episode thank you very much James.
Thanks to you I’ve learned about ROB 🙂

  • Mariwa

    March 4, 2011 at 3:06 pm

  • calibur_3d

    March 4, 2011 at 3:15 pm

Probably one of my favorites, just an amazing episode. I was having a pretty shitty day and this was the first thing to make me laugh so again, much thanks. You guys keep cranking them out and I’ll keep returning to share in the wacky adventures of The Angry Video Game Nerd. Also, I can’t wait for the new Board James.

  • March 4, 2011 at 3:43 pm

Hey, all of a sudden you came to my mind and i wondered if the new avgn came out. i had a fight with my wife and i feel terrible nowadays so i nearly prayed that the new one was out. Came to here and BAM! it’s out.

You made me very happy again James, I thank you for this 😉

Now i’ll grab my beer and spend the best time of this week…

  • BeeFh

    March 4, 2011 at 3:50 pm

It’s good to see an AVGN episode rather than a simple review.
We can all relate too. Old games of our past may be shit, but they hold a special place in our heart.

  • March 4, 2011 at 3:55 pm

    OH GOD.
    That was fucking beautiful.
    Oh god.
    I can’t.

I hope you never, EVER stop doing this.
If you do, it’ll be like when Steve left Blues Clues.
    We’ll all be empty. D:

  • TomM

    March 4, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Great episode. You had me worried this would be the last episode. that episode was pretty epic though. By the way, thanks for doing an episode about ROB; I never realized what it was for.

  • avgnfuckfan

    March 4, 2011 at 4:16 pm

overall, a good addition to the avgn series and one with a lot of heart to it. you hate all of those shitty games, and yet you care too much about them to give up on them. good job, james.

  • March 4, 2011 at 4:20 pm

Woohoo! 100th episode! I been watching you since, like, the 6th 😀

glad it’s uploaded… now time to watch it! Been waitin for this!!!

I love your stuff James. always excited when a new video gets put up and thanks for the past 99 episodes of entertainment.

  • March 4, 2011 at 4:35 pm

It is pretty funny how ROB the Robot looks a lot like the huge death machine from the beginning flashback of Terminator 2. That thing really beat the shit out of you.

By the way the effects you do for each video just keeping getting better. I don’t know if you simply just reversed the film to show those controllers tying you up but it looked great, as did the controllers floating up.

  • March 4, 2011 at 4:46 pm

All right, that was some pure epic awesomeness haha.

Funny thing is, ROB pretty much has justifiable motives behind his mission… in a world with ROB, there will be no COD!!!

    Great video 😛

  • March 4, 2011 at 5:07 pm

James, this episode was absolutely revolutionary. It’s at the same heights with Super Mario Bros 3, or even tops that.

  • Sigurd

    March 4, 2011 at 6:26 pm

I can’t believe the affection i have for all these shitty games… I thought for a second that this would be the last episode, and it made me realise that FUUUCK NO, what a shame it would be if you stopped.
I’ve waited for new episodes since i was in grade 9, man. What’s that… 14-15 years old? Man, and now i’m soon 19.. this is really a big part of my life.
I got all your shirts and DVDs. You are a great guy and what you do is so real and from the heart. I’ll always keep in tune with what you’re doing. Good stuff.
Oh, and by the way… totally off topic whatsoever: We’re doing Grease in my town, it’s a rather big thing, gonna be great. Anyways, I’m looking for a 50’s PD horror movie. I’t would be preferable with some of those scientist/girl/hero type scenes. Anyone got any suggestions?

    March 4, 2011 at 7:32 pm

This was essentially a classic AVGN episode to say the least. It was at the last few seconds that I shed a tear of joy when I saw Simon’s Quest lying on the floor. It was at that moment that I stated that even when I’m old and gray, I will always remember AVGN as an important part of my childhood memories. LONG LIVE THE INFAMOUS NERD AND ALL OF HIS MEMORY MAKING QUALITIES.

  • Cruiserfan

    March 4, 2011 at 7:33 pm

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Keep it up and fuck the haters. You’re the man.

  • March 4, 2011 at 7:51 pm

I remembered that your newest episode was out this week. After my car’s breakline burst, I needed that, also, the week of my birthday too. I will be turning 32 this Sunday, and I think (even though not intentional) this was one of the greatest gifts of all time. The 100th episode of AVGN with the one thing that I wanted to see since 2 years ago, when I discovered your videos.

  • March 4, 2011 at 8:05 pm

Rob the robot is kind of neat. I want my own robot. Well done video (as allways). I salute you!

Absolutely outstanding. Having only been aware of your work for a little over a year now, I must say that you seem to only be getting better as time goes on. I’ve watched all of your videos, including everything from Board James to your movie reviews, and it seems that I will never cease to be impressed. Not only are you an inspiration to budding film makers everywhere, but also a great entertainer for classic video game collectors such as myself. Keep up the good work, because I hope to continue enjoying your videos for years to come!

    Hi James.

I have been a fan for over three years. In all that time I never registered – until now. I just felt that after all of the wonderful videos you’ve created and the immense enjoyment they’ve given me I just wanted to give my hearty thanks!

I’m sure like a lot of folks, I first found your videos on youtube. I was hooked from the word go. From the Karate Kid through Ghostbusters, your battles with the Nostalgia Critic and right up until the present day I always look forward to seeing your latest videos and know I will come away with a big grin on my face.

Thanks so much James! Your 100th episode was truly epic and I hope you continue with many more. Bring on the movie my friend.

  • Wagner8808

    March 4, 2011 at 11:17 pm

I have watched all of of your videos, and I have to say that this is the best one yet. It brought tears to my eyes when you went through flashbacks of all of the terrible games, but, somehow you still had a connection with them, and couldn’t let R.O.B. take over, so you battled him. It was epic, man! Within 8-10 years I really think you will be somewhere big in the motion picture industry! Keep up the GREAT work, and good luck with the movie.

  • Xaviervonrottie

    March 4, 2011 at 11:36 pm

5 Fucking stars guys! This one was perfect! The bit with copying the movements if Rob had me rolling! I still remember many long hours of frustration back in the 80’s with Mother Fucker Rob! Let’s hear it for us older bastards. As I hit the scene back in 1978! lol

Can’t wait to the next one and hope as always to see much much more in the years to come!

Thank you James and Mike for always making me laugh.

I must say James that gyro looked pretty damn tasty.

  • March 5, 2011 at 12:55 am

I’ve been a loyal fan for years now….damm near since the beginning when I first saw your Simon’s Quest video on Ebaumsworld.com, sometime back in 2005. I’ve told you once before, that your videos got me through a really rough patch in my life. Now, having celebrated your 100th revuew, all I gotta say is thank you. Really…..thank you for everything.

The video was excellent, and like all of the others, I’m always instantly transported back to my childhood…. watching them and remembering when things were easier for all of us.

Here’s a toast to another 100 vids, brah! Again…..thank you for everything you have done. I’m not lying when I say you’ve saved my life.

  • March 5, 2011 at 3:03 am

Please make another video this month. I was hoping for something epic like episode 99! Historic based video’s are what you do best. Don’t get me wrong some comedic relief is great, once in a while.

Hella-Cool video James. After being a fan since ’07 i finally registered. Love all your videos bro. My brothers and i have your videos practically memorized. Keep ’em coming. The only thing that would have made this video better is if Mike came in as the cowardly lion and shit ROB through the roof.

I have a life long facination with this robot, I watch clips of it on You Tube and google, I read reviews of its games (well 2 of them) I have seen the comercials and remember how it was used to sell the NES and make it stand out from the rest.

But sadly I have to say, it was BOOOOOOOM!

and unfortunately you cannot play with rob unless you own one ;-(

Congrats James on your 100th! I’ve been a fan since Episode 1! Keep up the great work. I prefer when your vids are more about the games and the history and less with the Hollywood-esque type stuff. But you’ve got to have fun yourself sometimes!

Well done. That was super sweet. Fun to watch. I was one of those who bought the full set as well with ROB. What a piece of shit. But if he only existed to be a reference for this movie…I am happy I share the experience. Thanks for the movie. Love your work.

im glad he did this one and not E.T. Im sure he will do it in a few episodes

  • March 6, 2011 at 9:40 pm

well that was severely disappointing… It seemed like you had literally no time to make what could have been the best episode ever. There’s not a very good fight scene, you didn’t explain exactly what gaming device you were using, (as in, like, every other video) and it just overall kinda…sucked. I love you AVGN, but this is seriously fucking awful. You really should have waited and put more work into this episode, instead of just trying to please the fans with an on-time release. Keep up the hard work though, I’m always a fan!

  • March 7, 2011 at 1:29 am

Hi James! I have been meaning to join your site for some time now and finally have. I have been watching your videos for many years and love all of your work. I just had to have my first comment be for this video as it was amazing! You consistently create truly quality videos that have more to them than most see at first glance. It must be hard to cater for all people and fans, as there are so many different tastes out there. I honestly have liked everything you have done. Sure there are standout episodes or films that become favorites, but all of your work is great. There is something nostalgic and moving about your videos that just captures a feeling most never achieve. I think this is seen best in your Cinemassacre 200 and The Dragon In My Dreams videos. But I definitely felt that same warmth in this 100th episode. There are other episodes that show this as well, but I’m already writing a novel of a comment, haha. I know there are other quite talented and funny people making shows on the Internet, but I think you have a true love of film and sense of telling a story that is uniquely yours. This is what makes you so good at what you love to do. Thank you for all the great videos. I wish you all the best in all you create, and hope you get to realize your dream of feature film making. Have a great day mate.

    March 7, 2011 at 4:51 am

I like how the nerd is sprawled out on the floor like the crucified Jesus. I think AVGN wants the public to idolize him like a God among mortal men. The AVGN dies then three days later he rises from the ashes to rectify the evil done by ROB. ROB created an unholy situation for the new AVGN jesus to take us to the promised land!. Naw, just kidding you fucking rock hard AVGN/james! keep the train going at full speed you have Tiger Blood in you like Charlie Sheen.

I give you 4.5 of 5 dying AVGN (Just because I’m a little snob).
But seriously, I considered the option you want to quit AVGN serie with this episode becuase I know sometimes authors became tired of their characters.
In m opinion, if you can surprise and trick me after 100 episode, you’re good.

Ever since your NES Accessories episode, with ROB at the end, you saying “I think you know what’s next,” I was dying to see this. That, and it being #100 makes this your best video to date. I fucking came when I saw this on your webpage.

  • Michael28

    March 7, 2011 at 9:42 pm

As someone who has been watching your videos for a long time, I think you need to drop the nerd character or take him in a new direction.
I’m not trying to be an a-hole, but it’s been a long time since I’ve even giggled at a joke in an AVGN episode.
I can see that you tried your best in this ROB episode, but all the jokes fell flat. I’m sorry, but the gyro joke was painfully unfunny.
Your latest videos are so scripted and feel really mechanical. You seem to be forcing jokes and the whole cussing gimmick has become predictable and boring.
You’ve done so many fighting scenes similar to the one in this episode and they’ve just become dull.
I think you need to move on to a new project. Make a feature-length movie or try a new web series. You’re very talented, but you’re not exercising your best abilities in these average AVGN episodes.
AVGN has had its run. Try something new. You’ve made 100 episodes, that’s a great accomplishment. But how much longer can you stretch out this limited character?
You can see that AVGN is stressful on you to make all the deadlines, so why not just end it on a good note and move on? Just my opinion. Like I said, you’re very talented, but I think you need to try something new.

    March 7, 2011 at 10:45 pm

The NES accessories episode was the first new AVGN I saw back in May 2008. About 3 years and 53 AVGN videos later ROB finally made his appearance! Nice work for the big 100, keep it up James!

  • MisterE

    March 8, 2011 at 9:37 am

congrats on 100! while i do agree with some people that the newer episodes may not have quite the level of freshness or hilarity that the older ones had, this one proved that you can still make funny avgn videos. for example the gyromite controller idea, and the line ‘it plays gyromite’ – had me laughing. the scene at the end where you grab the stack of game boxes made the cliched fight scene worth it.

so, while this wouldn’t be in my top 5 avgn videos, the problem is that there are so many great ones in the past. it’s still a nice addition to the history of avgn.

obviously you still have many rabid fans who want avgn to continue, but ultimately you have to do what YOU want to do, and some of us understand that, and know that you have talent, and wherever you choose to use that ability will still produce something worth watching.

    good job!

Well it’s an epic moment for AVGN fans as after a three year wait, we finally get the long awaited R.O.B review. But was it worth the wait? Since 2008, the show has moved away from the profanities and scatological humour and become more narrative driven. Although the shows low-brow humour is what drew me into it, I respect James for wanting to move on. And although this episode didn’t reach the gross out extremes of defecating on Bugs Bunny’s face (I don’t even think Troma could top that), it made up for it by giving the show a grandiosity that a review this long in the making deserved with effects and writing that still put AVGN ahead of the game. Well done James, one of your best episodes.

1: when avgn fights rob….kinda made me think of godzilla.. im sure if avgn where in godzilla, evrybody would have the game and here the roar ”FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCKKKKK!!!!!!” coming out of the title screen =D.

    2. It would of been funny when james said ”this is my hero” it would of been funny if he would of said with a 300 accent ”THIS, IS, NINTENDOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!” XD

Anyway nice job james hell epic! =J

Thank you so much Mr. Rolfe. Your show is truly magical and better than most anything on television. I have followed the AVGN since i was in the 8th grade in 2006 and your show has become a huge inspiration in much of the stuff i do in the art field. Kudos on the 100th episode it was a much inspired and epic way to celebrate 5(ish) years of AVGN. Here’s to a hopeful hundred more!

This was awesome, this is definitely one of my favorite episodes ever. I’ve been hoping for a long time that you would get around to reviewing ROB, and it’s definitely epic enough to be the 100th episode. The gyro sandwich had me laughing so hard I had to back up and re-watch it. The Gyromite controller was hilarious too, totally unexpected. The ending was kinda like those giant monster/robot movies from back in the day, and it was cool how everything returned to normal at the end just like when you beat a long RPG. Great stuff man, I hope you never stop making these videos.

Laughed through this entire episode, one of the my favorites, killer ending.

Very good episode. The killing off of the nerd tease made me very sad for a moment, thankfully the nerd lives on. There was a game that I would love to see for episode 101 but I can’t totally recall what it is. It’s like I’m on mars sometimes when I try to think of it. hey dude, you should review solstice for the nes. it is hard as hell. I can’t even get past the first few rooms, and the demo seems to do better than i do, and it pisses me off. the controls are a fuckload of shit and hard to get used to, and there’s a bunch of blocks that dissappear! oh, and there’s deathtraps at every turn, and you don’t even get a weapon! you will be haunted by this game until you finally beat it (good luck) or just get so annoyed that you’ll want to destroy it. it has a good storyline, though. please tell me you have it and that you’ll review it. please reply.

TMNT is going to be James next big project, he has watched every cartoon and putting toghether something special I am sure, well you can watch them all here totally free, lots of other users here have already checked it out, so why not watch one, the site is legit, totally free (few adverts, oh well even cinemassacre has them!) and there is no BOOM! involved.

  • March 13, 2011 at 12:15 pm

First of all epic episode James. Cant wait to see what you have in store for us next month with Ep 101

    @ adamadam63 & bscreen78
If you watch back over James’ older AVGN videos he states he will not do a direct PS1 game review. While he has included PSX games in reviews such as his Castlevania series, he said he simply doesn’t have the time and he is going with the games and consoles he grew up with.

While is would be cool to see James’ AVGN character tear the PSX a new one, I love his other work as well and devoting too much time to AVGN would ruin his other projects….. such as his AVGN movie!

  • March 13, 2011 at 2:40 pm

Sorry but in my opinion the episode wasn’t really as epic as everybody says. I thinkg you exaggerate the whole acting part. I would recommend doing the episodes like in the early days where the only acting going on was showing the cartridges. Of course it’s a different story with these strange devices, but you know what I mean. They are bad indeed, but you don’t always have to make a whole story out of them. Rather keep it short and concise.

    Greetings from Germany

Dear James, FUCK AVGN. While I enjoy AVGN a lot (and i do mean ALOT) I want you to know that you shouldn’t let it take over everything else! When you talk about it you make it seem like it’s work making an episode and not all that fun. If you want to make a new Jersey Odyssey or Cinemaphobia 2 go ahead! As a guy who dreams of making a big screen movie one day, I want you to know that you should ACT on your dream and make the movies YOU want to make not the ones your forced to do. On the other hand, if you like the way things are then just ignore me 😉

    March 14, 2011 at 5:19 am

What a fucking awesome episode. That was geek epic. I loved it.

I agree with what I saw a couple of others say: The last few reviews have gotten kind of narrative rather than Nerdy. You’re free to review how you want, James, and we love your videos no matter what. But I did notice that with games such as Daydreamin’ Davey for example, more time was spent explaining what was happening onscreen without really breaking out the Nerd antics. I don’t need to see beer and rabbit shit all the time or anything (as funny as that stuff is); I just thought that for the last few months the reviews had started to become a little more straightforward and “tolerant”.

This was a true return to form. You reviewed the game and made clear why it was bad, swore a lot, and let us see some of your own adventures which always make for a classic episode. The fact that you more or less destroyed Nintendo’s little trojan horse while still thanking them for what they did for the industry- not to mention the fact that you accept the shitty games- made this really fun and interesting. Of course it’s cool to see a return of the superhero too.

Congratulations on your 100th episode James. Thanks as always for giving us so much entertainment. Even if I did say “Oh noes, Dragon Warrior III! That’s my favorite RPG for the NES!” 😛

    Please keep ’em coming.

It’s not a masterpiece by know means. I don’t get why people are saying it’s bad. I thought it was great for what it was. It’s like what James said on the Terminator 3 movie, it’s no masterpiece but if you take it for what it was worth, it’s entertaining as shit. It was entertaining as hell and I thought it was good. Good job nerd.

I registered just so I could leave a comment on this video.

I am not coming down on the acting, as I think it is great. But I think this is a perfect example of acting taking too much focus away from the video game review. The actual history of R.O.B. and why he existed took up less than half a minute, and that was when R.O.B. was acting as a savior of the video game world. During the oversaturation of the market, major retail stores regarded video games as a “fad” that had passed, and were no longer interested in carrying video games. It was only by Nintendo accompanying their system with devices such as R.O.B. that retailers said “okay, this isn’t just an Atari, this is a TOY.”

There was no discussion of why R.O.B. came into existence, no discussion of how R.O.B. was packed with the deluxe Nintendo system, and no discussion of how R.O.B. did after Nintendo’s success (except for the allusion that there were only two games made… which took up 5 minutes). I love throwing in kinematics, special effects, and acting really angry, but please don’t forget the meat as well.

All that said, thank you for the many years of entertainment you have given us. World wouldn’t be the same without ya!

    “Stack up!!” hahah!

( I have been huge AVGN fan since 2006, and after watching 100 episodes of James as the Nerd, he’s inspired me to make my own show, reviewing shitty Wii games! So if you have the time, check out my vid on youtube where i review probably the worst Wii game of all time Party Pigs Farmyard Games! )

  • March 19, 2011 at 3:03 am

I just re-watched this episode, and I still can’t get over how great the script was in this. It had a truly awesome story arc. It put into perspective on why the classics still live on in greatness after 20+ years.
Your speeches in the beginning and end were perfect. Your hard work really showed James. Bravo buddy.

I have loved all your videos, but I’m pretty sure this is my favorite. I have enjoyed your show for 5 years now, and let’s hope we all can enjoy them for years to come!

I have to say this was a GREAT 100th Episode. I’ve always wondered what you would do for a 100th episode. Though it was predictable that the “Nerd” would have a showdown of blood and gore BUT it was just awesome James. 5 thumbs up! GREAT WORK! Can’t wait for March’s episode.

I have been a fan ever since a friend of mine showed me castlevania 2 simons quest in like 2004/2005 and from that moment on i have been waiting impatiantly for new episodes to come out. now several years later the 100th episode has come…. and it is amasing. The story is good and simple, the jokes are super funny and a great selection of music. The simons quest ending music at the end was perfectly fitting and the special effects was pretty cool. thank you James for all the years of high class entertainment. I will countinue to wait impatiantly for more epesodes for as long as the show countinue.

  • March 23, 2011 at 2:15 pm

  • March 28, 2011 at 6:08 am

James, It would be awesome if you did a video about horrible fighting games. There are several that would fit the bill. One that you should take a look at it Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls (SNES) if you haven’t already. A story driven fighting game that had the Name Double Dragon, but wasn’t produced by technos. Although the game isn’t the worst ever, it pisses off double dragon fans.

  • April 2, 2011 at 3:54 am

i hope sincerely that this (and themovie) does not mean the end of the nerd/m-fing mike.

i think the glitch gremlin should have made an appearance, i bet you he’s why rob sucks!

but seriously, my brother had rob, but he never let me near him, so i had no idea how much he sucked. for some reason, i thought he did other stuff on his own, like a normal toy. doesn’t he say anything? or is my memory messed up and i’m thinking of some kind of 80’s robot that’s similarly shaped. i swear, i member something like this bringing my brother a drink, but maybe i imagined it.

was it actually expensive when it was first released? i remember it being a reaally big deal, he got it for…christmas? i don’t think it was like a furby where everyone wanted one but it was hard to get, but i think it cost a lot of money. if i knew, i prolaly owuld ask for my money back, what a ripoff.

This was a good episode. For the first time EVER with the nerd series, I saw things begin to go down hill a bit. The Star Wars episode was just bad. Good review of the games, but so many misses as far as jokes. I was beginning to think the nerd series was going to go down hill, but you came back with this awesome 100th episode. Great Job James! And a short shout out to Mother Fucker Mike, who I see have been conversing with the fans. You’re the man Mike. You and James are 2 of my idols as a film maker, Next to Stallone.

Absolutely amazing video james, I dont knwo how oyu do it and how long oyu spend on it. I play all of these games on VIzzed on he NES emaulator adn I watched TMNT here, have you ever visited this site its fantastic? http://www.vizzed.com/vizzedboard/retrotoons/index.php?show=13&ref=65348

anyway I wanted to say that I am sorry if people think this is spam, I really dont want to go to the trouble of telling people where they can play old retro games tottally and legally for free as they dont sell them anymore and you don’t own them or download them put play them online.

Anyway ROB was my favorite robot, my cousin had one it cost a fortune and we got bored within one week of owning him and he stayed in the cupboard until my aunt gave it to a jumble, can you beleive that, ROB being given to a jumble, he dererved to be in a musuem!

What is the ending theme called, and who made it? I checked the people in the credits but couldent find that one.

    • Kevin Bass

      January 31, 2012 at 4:32 am

@Arjisaj The end theme is a remix of the ending of Castlevania II: SImon’s Quest , just after Simon redefeats Dracula and lays him to rest. It’s symbolic and I feel well placed, given that the Nerd has just defeated ROB and ‘Broke his Curse’ so to say, wonderful touch, I love this episode.

    January 22, 2012 at 12:00 pm

I was one of the kids ‘lucky’ enough to have this, and well, I honestly remember playing gyromite maybe 3 times, realizing how much ass it sucked, then just ended up playing with it like a regular toy.

I remember I had WAY more fun playing with the gyros than than gyromite. I never got stack up, but it looks like it blows too.

  • SamusTheHedgehog

    February 9, 2012 at 2:09 pm

I think it was pretty good, the only thing i would have done different is that during the recollection, i would have flipped it in reverse and said something like “but wait, no other games besides Gyromite and Stack Up? that means no Sonic The Hedgehog, No Super Mario Bros, No Metroid, and No Legend of Zelda. I wont F***ing have it!!!” just do something to realize that not all games are bad and some are worth defending.

    • March 27, 2012 at 4:05 am

@SamusTheHedgehog I think the point of him mentioning only the bad ones is when going back to the beginning of the video, when he’s ashamed of his shitty collection, he realizes that he’d rather have them over having practically none at all. Hence the term “You never know what you have until it’s gone”

    Seeing AVGN having the crap beat out of him is funny, but talking about it all ending could bring a tear to anybody’s eye. When Rolfe dies, I’m seriously going to be there at the grave, trying to throw mushrooms into the casket. > _>;

    • February 16, 2012 at 10:46 pm

@AlphaZero Lets bury some shitty games with him to!

    • March 27, 2012 at 4:01 am

  • AronLarssonShaghoie

    February 15, 2012 at 5:07 pm

The ending has got a deep philosophical meaning as well as it’s succesfully playing on your emotions. The effects and shooting is incredible and with the videogame crash of 1983 it even has some history and useful information to share. AVGNs R.O.B impression almost made me shit myself in laughter. The entertainment value of this video is humongous. This video deserves a fucking Oscar. And I’m dead fucking serious.

    Dead, fucking, serious.

    • March 27, 2012 at 3:58 am

@AronLarssonShaghoie James’s ROB impression, Kyle bopping to the beat of battletoads, and of course, good ol’ shit pickle. Behold the trinity of AVGN gags that will never fail to make you PYSL. All Hail The Nerd!

  • February 16, 2012 at 1:10 pm

Idea for an alternate ending, he defeats rob, all the games go back to normal, he looks at a cart of ET and says “Fuck, I should have let it happen.”

    • February 16, 2012 at 10:45 pm

@AlphaZero that would have been the best

    • March 27, 2012 at 3:54 am

@AlphaZero that would be epic. I still really like how he did it though bc it closes in on Simon’s Quest, which was his first ever review in 06. As if to say “and this is where it all started… thanks for 100 episodes!” i kind of see things in a psychological POV so this ending really appealed to me 🙂

This may have been said before but the reason to why the game title changes it’s name to Robot Gyro is because the game pcb board is attached to an adaptor that allows the game to be played on NES systems. So in other words you can open up the Gyromite, take out the adaptor and use it to play Famicom games.

I noticed something, James. In the first version of the video you used music from Super Metroid in the beginning. Now it’s a variation on the AVGN theme. When did this happen? And why?

    • February 18, 2013 at 1:34 pm

Hey I noticed that too. Was always wondering. I still watch the old episode, which I downloaded back then. I like the metroid music and stuff.

    November 20, 2012 at 2:42 pm

Hey James I have a question. During the video I noticed something kinda odd, namely at 15:24. Are your glasses through your ear? Just didn’t know if you had a ear piercing and shoved your glasses through there? Anyway I notice little things like that and just thought I’d ask.

This is the worst game review I have ever seen in my life. All of that fighting with R.O.B. was too violent for my heart. The only thing I liked about this was the title card, for being the last. Great job Mike! 🙂

      May 8, 2014 at 12:12 pm

Too violent? All the cursing and shitting is okay with you? But But the violence is too much?

    • Sammy Schitz

      May 9, 2014 at 5:49 pm

Did you even see those games? They’re the only two games that work with ROB and neither of them warrant much explanation. If this were just a review, it’d be like 5 minutes long. And are you new to AVGN? AVGN is a comedy, not necessarily a straight up game reviewing series.

  • May 25, 2013 at 1:32 am

Pretty fucking cool for 1985. It helped put NES on the map at the trade shows. Nes might not have made it without him.

  • September 7, 2013 at 8:45 pm

hmm, I wonder how rob would react if used with other games that use flashes like duck hunt. maybe he’d flip out! XD

  • October 13, 2013 at 8:11 pm

Robotic Operating Buddy? More like Robotic Piece of Fucking Dog Shit!

  • November 13, 2013 at 2:11 am

This episode seems deeper than it would necessarily need to be. It seems humanist, or at least it seems to evoke the struggle between humanism and anti-humanism by representing humanism as the nerd versus anti-humanism as the robot. Or maybe it’s just entertaining. Whatever.

      May 8, 2014 at 12:10 pm

I think it’s deep in the sense that the nerd realizes he rather have a world filled with good and really shitty games, than a world without games at all. Also those shitty games are a part of his life whether he likes it or not.

  • November 26, 2013 at 12:15 am

    26 November 2007

Kasparov is good at protecting his king, but will he be able to protect his ass when in prison?
MOSCOW, Russia — Former world champion Gary Kasparov was sentenced to 5 days in jail on Sunday after defeating Russian president Vladimir Putin in a contentious chess match earlier this weekend. Formally, Kasparov was charged with “defrauding a government official,” as it was determined that he couldn’t have won the game in just 11 moves without cheating.

  • June 19, 2016 at 8:25 pm
