Inking an AVGN Title Card

Mike / February 9th, 2011

For anyone that’s interested in the creative process that goes into making an AVGN title card here’s a speed-up video of Mike inking the Star Wars drawing.

Whats the song that starts at 6:05, more specifically 6:20.

This is pretty cool, that looked like it took forever. Great work Mike.

inker? more like a tracer!… no seriously though, this is great. Good job Mike

  • February 9, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Sweet video. Mike is a very talented Artist. I wish I could draw like that.
I can’t only imagine how long it took for Mike to draw that, let alone ink it.

I always enjoy seeing this behind the scenes stuff.

  • Cory Power

    February 9, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Mike could totally get away with drawing like James and one other character and whip it up in like 10 minutes, but instead the guy goes above and beyond and draws every character he can possibly fit on the page. It’s unreal.

  • Fenrid

    February 9, 2011 at 8:52 pm

Great job Mike! How much time did it take?

  • February 9, 2011 at 8:54 pm

Wow is about all I can think to say. Just amazing.

    February 9, 2011 at 9:02 pm

As a fellow artist I had to see this the minute I layed eyes on the link. Awesome work man, I wonder if you colored it as well? I was bidding on this thing on ebay but the price skyrocketed. Good work as usual guys. Looking forward to the ET episode, shhhh don’t tell anyone.

    February 9, 2011 at 9:13 pm

    Mike Matei is God.

  • WillWill

    February 9, 2011 at 9:28 pm

Oh, fuck off — Mike Matei is NOT God!… He is, however, a talented artist.

  • WillWill

    February 9, 2011 at 9:39 pm

… on a side note, is there any way you guys (James & Mike) could make up prints of this title card before you auction it off? I get the feeling that it’s going to fetch a pretty penny — more than I can afford, but I would LOVE to get a large print of it.

    I dunno, just a thought…

SOOOOOO AWESOME!!!!! Mike, you are VERY talented! I loved watching this 😀

  • You Can Just Walk Over It

    February 9, 2011 at 10:12 pm

My only gripe with this is it didn’t get much appreciation in the actual AVGN episode. As with all title cards it was shown for 4-5 seconds at the beginning, but I honestly didn’t even notice the “99” until I saw this video. Since it’s so involved with so many characters it would have been ‘better’ if the episode slowly panned across each character or zoomed around a little more to fully give people an appreciation for the amount of work that goes in to these.

Similar to the Roger Rabbit or frankly most recent title cards, showing them for a couple seconds just doesn’t do justice for Mike’s work, but that’s what the auctions are for I suppose.

  • February 9, 2011 at 10:18 pm

Very nice work sir! Is that India Ink and a Windsor Newton brush? Very great brush skills! I ink with Microns and Faber/castells myself. Could never master the brush. You make it look so easy!

  • February 9, 2011 at 10:20 pm

Also does anyone know what the final art for this went for on ebay? I sure wish I knew it was up. I woulda paid top $ for this.

That’s crazy, it looks like there is not one miss stroke. You draw every line with such confidence it’s just insane…insanely awesome! I had no idea how much work these title cards actually take.

  • Mariusz69

    February 9, 2011 at 11:59 pm

This one wasn’t for sale in the last auction — the last action : “The Game Glitches” card went for $362.82 |||| “The AVGN Revisited” when for $238.37 || The various AVGN christmas sketches went for about $50 each. If they ever sell this Star Wars one is should fetch like at least $1k. It’s a cross between Hieronymus Bosch’s “Garden of Delights” and the Sistine Chapel. AWESOME WORK MF’er Mike!!!!!

  • adenton7

    February 10, 2011 at 1:19 am

Wow my jaw dropped seeing that. It is amazing that you have that much talent drawing. I do agree that in the star wars episode you should have zoomed in on the title card to show all the detailed characters. I also love how you put all the character’s names before you drew them in the video. I love it when you guys ad these makings of the title cards and AVGN videos. A lot of your fans find this very interesting like I do.Thank you for suprising me with this great video. Mike and James have fun with what you are doing or there is just no point of doing it. Cannot wait for your 100th episode. I hope it will be R.O.B. but I bet there is a lot of people that would like it to be that or E.T. I will be happy with whatever it is though. You always do a good job and put a lot of time and effort in your videos.

    February 10, 2011 at 1:33 am

    Hello James and Mike,

I’ve been watching these videos with a great deal of enjoyment since it’s inception. I was very happy to see some “behind the scenes” type material like this, especially relating to one of my new favorite nerd videos, #99. Long story short, i was so impressed with the skill and tireless effort Mike put in to this title card that I had to create an account to pass on my respect. Truly amazing work, both of you. Thank you for bringing joy to so many of us.

That was awesome, guys! Mike, you’re a heck a shot with a pen! How many hours did you put into that title card? I have to say, you’ve inspired me to give inking a shot (I always drew, never inked, except trancing, if that counts). I think this video is making AVGN fans what talent you pocess. And guys, keep throwing up these behind-the-scene videos every now and then, I think they’re just as fun to watch as a actual Nerd episode. It’s just really cool how a project really comes together. Thanks!

  • mcnerven

    February 10, 2011 at 2:35 am

Awesome video, such a great title card ! I have tons of admiration for artistry and as someone who’s talent consists of stick figure porn at best, I feel like what humans will feel like when aliens with superior technology eventually make first contact.

Keep up the great work guys! Best day of the month is the first Wednesday =).

This is spectacular work and it was very interesting to see the process. I was glad to see this posted as I’ve always liked the title cards. How long did it take you start to finish?

I think these pieces add a great deal to the avgn shows – keep up the great work!

  • February 10, 2011 at 8:44 am

Man that is awesome, very nice piece you did here dude. My grandmother started me inking my art in high school, I really miss that. I did Mcfarlanes wolvie/hulk clash IH#340 and spilled the damn ink JUST as I was finishing, I’ll never forget that. Look closely at wolvies left claw.

Keep it up man, my 10 year old boys started really looking forward to the title cards lately and it’s even gotten one of them picking up his pencils again which I’m happy to see.

  • Crowbar

    February 10, 2011 at 8:45 am

I have to admit, the first title cards were pretty shitty. But you’ve improved greatly, this looks awesome.

  • Hadamar

    February 10, 2011 at 8:45 am

    Whats that music?

  • February 10, 2011 at 8:46 am

Nice work. As an artist/inker myself, I know how much work this is(and I’m glad to have online shows like the AVGN playing in the background).

Impressed how you use a brush, I have never mastered that myself(still using good old pen and ink).

  • February 10, 2011 at 8:50 am

Hah, found a WIP-picture I took during inking the image on the Fan Art-section:

Want to figure out how to do these kinds of speed-up videos sometimes, they are so inspirational to watch.

    February 10, 2011 at 9:41 am

    Hey Mike great work!!
How long did it take in real?

  • encey

    February 10, 2011 at 9:49 am

Fuckin awesome. You should show the coloring process next!

  • Cheznar

    February 10, 2011 at 11:30 am

now I’m curious how does this all start? before the inking I mean does he take time out ahead of schedule to illustrate the main idea of the drawing before its brought in for inking? like the actual outline that he follows while inking…cause inking took forever it would have to take some time to sketch out the actual artwork into existence….I’m intrigued good video thanks guys can’t wait to see whats next….

  • Bloodhavoc

    February 10, 2011 at 11:33 am

  • Mr. Simon

    February 10, 2011 at 12:48 pm

I remember I paused the star wars video at the title card for a long time to see all the details in it. I really like these behind the scenes videos

  • Schloss Ritter

    February 10, 2011 at 12:48 pm

I’m surprised Mike has enough patience to do this after seeing how ADD he acts in most videos. Then again, the keyword is probably “acts”

    Nice work, dude.

  • AFX

    February 10, 2011 at 12:50 pm

I would like to see a “Draw with MotherFucker Mike” series. real talk.

  • February 10, 2011 at 12:53 pm

@Schloss Funny you mention that, James notes in the McKids ep. that he has/had A.D.D as a child. I have a kid with it too, hell I probably have it. I prefer to call it ‘charm’. 🙂

I’m sure it’s a ton of work but they wouldn’t keep doing it if they didn’t enjoy it. I have to admit though, I’d pay money to hear the conversation they had when James asked Mike if it would be alright if he shat on his face (first bugs ep).

  • Nightmare19

    February 10, 2011 at 12:56 pm

Just watching this video kicked my ass! I can only imagine how long this took because this speed drawing video was nearly 10 minutes long! It must of taken Mother fucker Mike a long time!

None the less amazing stuff and keep up the great work!

    February 10, 2011 at 1:21 pm

Wow, that’s just unbelievable… Thanks a bunch for doing this, you guys. I hope you put that on a Nerd DVD as a feature some time. It’s just too awesome to be an online exclusive!

  • February 10, 2011 at 3:29 pm

You guys should start selling these title cards as posters! I would definetly buy one!

  • GryeDor

    February 10, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Nice, fun to watch Mike! Is there any reason you don’t use a tablet? Not being an artist, I’m not sure how it would alter the look or the process, but I know of a lot of people that swear by them. Anyway, just wondering.

  • pro_thizz

    February 10, 2011 at 5:49 pm

for all the people that think they have no skills to draw, I used to think like you, until i actually developed and honed my skills to draw like that. All it takes is patients and practice and good imagination and i think most of us have that. Also just want to say watching this video made me appreciate the title cards even more. It does boggle the mind when you think about all the different cards he has made.

    February 10, 2011 at 8:37 pm

WOW!!!!!! If I hadn’t seen it I probably would not have believed it. It’s nice to know that I you guys all actualy have talent, because I admire what you do, and it would suck if you guys were just some of those people that get lucky and popular throught the internet and don’t really deserve the fame or really any of the attention they recieve. Thanx for the post and keep up the good work guys.

  • TheShadowRealm

    February 10, 2011 at 8:39 pm

    February 10, 2011 at 9:39 pm

Holy blit! And I thought your episodes took effort. Hell no! All praise goes to Mike!
So much work, draw it in pencil, then redraw it, just for a picture that is shown for only at the most 3 seconds.
I think Mike could make a very good cover designer, or a good cartoon animator. 🙂

  • Mishobu

    February 10, 2011 at 10:29 pm

Mike i have a doubt, in the middle of the video you take another bottle cap for the ink, my doubt is, why take another bottle cap? and do you use the same fine brush all the inking? i dont know anything about drawing and im curious.
    Thanks in advance

    February 10, 2011 at 11:10 pm

Thanks for posting this! When I first saw that Star Wars review I was really impressed with the title card & still think it’s the best one Mike has ever done so to see him inking it was amazing!

Being greedy, but I wish I could see you colour it too! Or a video of one in time lapse from scratch. Again, amazing job Mike. You’re an awesome artist.

  • MaaZeus

    February 11, 2011 at 5:35 pm

I am stunned! I never realised how much work a “mere titlecard” takes. I envy you Mike. By nature I am a good drawer, even as a kid when other kids were drawing stick figures with hundred sawblade fingers I could draw rather complex characters, but only figures and I never could color or shade them even if my life depended on it. I know that drawing the rough template takes time, and now seeing you coloring and shading it… I am at the loss of words how much effort it really takes.

Perhaps I should grab my pen again and start drawing again. And whip myself to learn coloring and shading properly, though it has been +10 years since I drew anything…

    February 11, 2011 at 8:11 pm

WOW! Mike this is awesome. I like seeing this kind of video. I knew Mike was a good artist, but I never realized just how much work went into this sort of thing, it’s really eye opening.

James, sometime this year, or as a DVD video, could we get a video of mikes normal routine during the filming of an AVGN ep? Like all of his chores and how he prepares for them. I’ve always assumed you jointly write the scripts, and I know mike is a huge part of the background work, and I admire him, but it’s also easy to forget just how much he does and how big of a part of the show he is.

  • February 11, 2011 at 9:46 pm

Mother F’er Mike is the Mother F’in Man! Awesome work, that was 10 minutes sped up…. can’t imagine how long it took total from start to finish….

  • HouseMD

    February 12, 2011 at 6:34 am

    … oh my god.
You go through all that? Ok, Star Wars card had a lot of characters and stuff on it which required a lot of detail than the average title card, even so, to do a process which I regard as painful so many times and still achieve perfection in each one (I haven’t noticed anything imperfect about them). Motherfucker Mike, you deserve… I donno… fucking every award in history for going through that shit of your own free will.

It’s always somehow very interesting to see things moves in either fast or slow motion. This is no exception, as I too have wondered how much hand work goes into these works.

    And… Jesus…

  • February 12, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Wow!!! Mike is so talented artist, i often miss the hard work that is put in the title cards, but not anymore, i’ll apreciate much more all the details that make AVGN perfect man, thanks for the eyes opener

  • February 12, 2011 at 7:34 pm

Shit dude, that’s absolutely amazing. You put so much work into it. I don’t expect an answer, but I’m guessing its scanned and colored by computer after.. and at the very end when you put the stars.. was it white out or something to remove ink?

very, very impressive. Nice to see real talent!

  • Mr. Vermin

    February 15, 2011 at 1:18 am

Ah, sorry, I just read through older comments and saw Mike’s reply to someone, so I understand about the coloring now.

I bet there’s a lot of people out there who would buy such a thing at an auction, if one would be so inclined to pursue that kind of thing… it would be especially useful for building up funds for new games to review. I wonder if you guys have ever tried it… I mean, to make up for all the time spend putting all that ink onto paper and only being able to show it for a few seconds in the finished video.

Good job! I always enjoy watching an artist’s process. 😛

    February 18, 2011 at 2:22 pm

During the “Revisited” episode I thought: Wow It would be interesting to see how he draws those cards.

And my wish gets granted. Although when I finally saw this video posted I thought that I would never watch the whole 9 minutes of it. I get easily bored ; )

But I watched the whole video and enjoyed it. Just fascinating to see the process and the concentration that is needed.

Why don’t you get some of these title cards printed on some like, high quality poster paper, and sell them on the site? I understand if you prefer to keep all the originals for sentimental reasons, but, you could make a lot of money and frankly, I think every Nerd fan would love to hang up a big poster like this =D

  • Darthbrooks

    February 20, 2011 at 10:38 pm

I’m glad you posted a video showing the making of the title cards so everyone can see just how much work goes into making them! Mike, thank you for making these cards, as they’re very appreciated.

Keep up the good work both of you!

  • February 21, 2011 at 7:06 pm

Dude! This is fucking amazing! Mad props, I can only imagine the amount of skill – and patience- required to do something like this. Fantastic work. The show is great, the title card work is phenomenal, even the different versions of the AVGN theme were spectacular. Loved every second of this.

    Awesome job, Motherfucker Mike!
I had no idea you actually inked them by hand! I usually ink all my stuff with a pen and then I clean up and put all the rest of the polish in photoshop.
Do you color the card in photoshop too?
Not only was the inking incredibly epic but drawing all those characters too must have been intense. How long did it take you overall?

  • February 28, 2011 at 5:36 pm

What kind of pen and ink does Mike use?

    March 1, 2011 at 5:46 am

Mike Matei just really outdid himself with this one, it’s absolutely fantastic. I’ve always liked the title cards, but this one really just blew me away. The inclusion of this video was a great idea. I wish I could purchase this in some sort of poster form.

    Holy shiiiittttt

so…. what happens if you make a mistake mid-way?

  • March 3, 2011 at 11:16 pm

The final colored version looks great, but the black and white freshly inked version is absolutely sparkling with excellence! Not to sound corny but it’s true. I might have to try Mike’s hatch shading technique. It’s hatched but not crosshatched. It has that finely detailed 19th century newspaper illustration look (which is awesome).

I wonder if Mike is a Jhonen Vasquez fan.
